Jason and I hung out there on a rainy Saturday afternoon and it was perfect! We were there to kill time between a wedding at the nearby Newtown Meeting House (very cute btw) and the reception at the Ethan Allen Hotel. A local we ran into recommended this place; she's a nanny in Newtown and gets lunch there once a week. Considering it was located in an affluent town, the prices on the sandwiches were very reasonable. Many of the sandwiches were priced $4.95 and below with Boar's Head Deli meat. Since we wanted to save room for wedding food, J. had a coffee while I had a French Vanilla cappuccino to perk up. Even though it was self-served, it was cheap and tasty. I loved the little picnic benches inside. The ambience was very relaxing as we were the only ones in the shop. I saw many little baked goods and some elegant jewelry made by people in Newtown. Awesome deli in downtown Newtown. The classic "Flagpole" sandwich was great & they had a delicious side of "bacon pasta salad." There are a lot of choices & the prices are very reasonable. Having driven through Newtown all day, I can also add that Newtown is a very underrated town that you never really hear about. It would make sense that such a great place is here. Eh, ya know... to me it's just a deli that sells extra crap... They have Boar's Head cold cuts, and the sandwich prices are extremely reasonable, including the $1.25 bacon egg & cheese special before 11AM. But that's pretty much the entire story. Coffee station, candy, a very small selection of local tchotchkes and jewelry, and that's about it. I know, the very concept of the general store is all but an anachronism - the days of discount washboards and saltpeter are long behind us. But many such places that remain have something truly special. You can't do better than this if you want a hot sandwich (for about $5, which is a good deal around here). While the flagpole is famous, I love hot roast beef and will usually go for "the Borough" or "the Sandy Hook" (I think that's what it's called). I usually get a cold mocha Frappuccino with it since they don't have milkshakes. The place has lots of options in terms of drinks, chips and candy. All sandwiches come wrapped up in foil and paper so don't bother to order for here or to go. Best deal in town for lunch. Take the meal out for a picnic on Holcomb Hill on a sunny, breezy day and you'll be in heaven. read more

Don't go here if you expect your order to be correct. I had to dust off my old account to write my first review ever... The first, call in order for a Egg & Cheese turned into a Bacon, Egg & Cheese. When confronted on pickup the correction order turned into Ham, Egg & Cheese? After that we vowed to only order in person. Giving this place a second chance, I ordered a burger for lunch making sure they understood the order & checked the order ticket taped to the sandwich when leaving. Nice little store and deli with quite a few options. They sell a breakfast sandwich for $1.49 which is awesome. Self-serve coffee bar (including iced coffee) with plenty of fru-fru add-ins if that's your thing as well as milk and half&half. Places to sit inside and out. Everyone's friendly. read more

Come here for the fantastic sandwiches in the back, and then grab yourself one of the few tables in the front to chow down (or if it's a nice day, sit on the tables or benches outside). Great place to grab lunch. Food was cheap; portion was large; wait was minimal, and choices were aplenty. I had a "Flagpole" which I was told is one of the most popular items on the menu. My memory may be a bit faulty, but I believe it had bacon, chicken, and avocado. It came simply wrapped in white paper and was large and very filling. I loved the inside of the store, clean, old-fashioned, with high ceiling, and rustic benches near the windows. I would choose to come here for lunch over fast-food places in a heart beat. read more

The General Store is iconic in Newtown. Growing up, it was never that big of a business. They used to be known for their ice cream (which, oddly enough, they don't even sell anymore... There's a freezer in the back with ice cream sandwiches/bars, but they don't have the soft-serve anymore.) But somewhere along the way, they decided to start making breakfast sandwiches, and the nature of the place changed. The General Store is now a central hub of Newtown (that has expanded to include other delis that share the same menu, albeit with different names for the sandwiches; Misty Vale deli in Sandy Hook by the high school and Pete's Sake Deli in Bethel on Stony Hill). This is a fantastic place to stop in for a quick sandwich. Their prices won't break the bank (you can get a sandwich and drink for under $7.00) and it's a relaxing atmosphere, especially on a warm day. There are two benches set up outside, so you can eat in view of the Flagpole and Edmond Town Hall. It seems like everyone I know gets the Flagpole (chicken patty, ranch, bacon, and cheese), but I'd recommend straying to other options on the menu, if you're at all adventurous. The Hawleyville is my personal favorite (formally known as the "Gellert Smile", back when Dr. Gellert was still practicing in Newtown; turkey, swiss, roasted peppers, thousand island dressing on rye). If you're stopping in for breakfast, either get a hashbrown on your sandwich or go for a specialty sandwich (the Lava Pit is delicious if you're a fan of spicy foods, though it'll do a job on your insides after). The other thing that reviewers don't seem to mention is the the General Store has things other than the deli inside. Now, this includes candy, gum, chips, and coffee, but I'm referring to the gifts that you can buy in there. There are products from local residents who create things like mugs, hand-painted bowls, homemade soaps, baked goods, and various other household decorations (mostly "country" in nature). read more

Recently started coming to this area for work and fell in love with this hidden gem. Great place to stop in for a quick breakfast or lunch sandwich. The prices are very reasonable compared to other lunch and breakfast places in the area. Where can you get a bacon egg & cheese for 1.50 anymore ? This place gets really crowded on weekend mornings and during lunch times during the week. Seating is also limited so your best bet is to grab a sandwich and go. Parking is atrocious also. Prices are cheap. Where can you get a sandwich today for $4.75-$5.00 ? Not where i lived. More like $7 and up. Of course it blows subway away. Not a Deli like in the City or long Island but where around here is their one?( $20 in NYC for a Pastrami!) Great place to pick up Sandwich or Sub. I love the deli in the back! Has so many great sandwiches named after spots in Newtown! I usually craft my own turkey sandwich- turkey, lettuce, tomato, onions, hot peppers, pepper jack, and spicy mustard! Hot, hot, hot! But the sandwitch is packed with meat and the amenities and is a joy to eat! If you're craving a turkey sandwich fine right that's it, and it is done best at the Newtown General Store. The breakfast sandwiches are a great deal, but I'm not a big fan of the bacon egg and cheese sandwiches. I went here today as it came highly recommended from a coworker. I was not disappointed! It took me a moment to figure out the layout, but the gentleman at the desk where you order was so friendly, and filled me in. I ordered the Neapolitan sandwich, was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had- not an exaggeration. The building itself is a classy country-esque vibe, which also filters some need little trinkets and goods for the home. I bought a BEAUTIFUL necklace (made by white tulip). For the second time in two weeks I ordered a hot "specialty" sandwich from this place only to throw it in the garbage. The meat was warmed on the grill in a disgusting heap of grease/drippings and they threw it on the bread and served it up. The amount of filth on this sandwich was so bad that it leaked through the sandwich wrapper and the cardboard sandwich carrier. It is now all over my car seat and desk. The sandwich is in the garbage again. The people at this place are complacent robots who obviously have no regard for customer service. read more

The general store always packs a big meaty sandwich. The meat is sometimes too salty which is why it only gets 4 stars. Also, the pasta and potato salads look like they've been left out all week which is why I've never tried them. read more

This deli is the best. No where else will you find a fantastic tasting lunch sandwhich for only 5$. The customer service is great, with fast service and nice people. The whole set up of the place is quite genius. You are always inclined to get chips after you order, a drink while you wait, and sometimes a sweet snack while you pay because they're only 99 cents. And for all the times I have been to the general store they have never messed up my order. There was one time they gave me double egg and double bacon when I didn't ask, but I was happy about that. read more

I come to this deli weekly because it really is the best! The prices are super cheap but the food is of great quality. If you come in before 11am they have breakfast sandwiches (bacon, sausage, or ham egg and cheese) for $1.75 which is the cheapest breakfast sandwich around and it tastes great. The lunch sandwiches are around $5-$6 and they always leave you filled. I always get a turkey or chicken salad (really tasty) sandwich and put whatever toppings I want on it. I've been coming here since I was a kid. Love the food and the feel and the prices are great too. I can't agree with the few people who said the food is unhealthy because one can easily customize an order. Chicken cutlet can be grilled chicken, bacon can be light, or entirely eliminated and they can adapt most sandwiches to salad form. All in all I think its a great spot, and they are closed on Sundays which I believe is a great managerial decision for one's employees. read more

The General Store is, hands down, my favorite place in town to go for lunch. I get the Newtowns Best, nothing like it. Always great. BUT they have almost nothing healthy, my wife hates it. The wraps are all drenched in a cream dressing (or so I hear) and they have very few health foods. To the guy that owns this place: you need a light menu, your wraps don't cut it. Things like hummus, olives, tofu. Things that women eat. I watched 5 women order the other day and they all got bacon egg and cheeses, it was 2pm. I imagine because somehow that's the healthiest thing on the menu. I love your food and I want to eat it every chance I get, but if my wife's in the car, I can't stop. The earload isn't worth it.
