Why not?! Imagine walking up to it or perhaps riding your horse up to it. Now, it remains and shall forever remain, right in the middle of the road! Unfortunately, there have been some accidents but the majority of Newtown citizens understood its historic significance. The majority fought to preserve it and won! It was initially erected in 1876 as part of the the centennial celebration. The original 70 ft pole was brought to Main Street by oxen. Life is good when you learn about, understand and respect history.

It is well preserved and a focal point for many gatherings and interesting functions. Tonight I had the pleasure of enjoying a performance by the Hamden Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble of more than 60 volunteer musicians in the Greater New Haven area. This ensemble is in it's 56th year. The concert was impressive and right in my backyard. I'm looking forward to their next performance on April 29, 2018 at 3:00.

The first is a large sculpted bronze panel with five marching soldiers and sailors carrying flags. The other prominent feature is a fierce looking bronze eagle with its wings raised in flight. That eagle is pretty fierce looking! Dedicated in 2006, the memorial has a three-panel granite base with a bronze plaque on each panel. The side plaques list about 500 names of Wallingford residents that fought in the Great War. Some of the names are marked by an asterisk, and we know what that means, don't we? The center panel is the real show-stopper here. There is a large inscription that reads: Dedicated in Honor and In Memory of Those Men And Women from Wallingford Who Served in the World War. 1917 - 1918 Above the inscription is that stunning sculpted panel of the five marching servicemen. And above that panel is the fierce looking eagle. It's a very impressive, original, and gorgeous monument.

The Society puts on 8 to 10 programs throughout the year and invites the community in for them and to view the collections. The speakers that they get for the programs are fantastic! I have attended talks on bees, the Naugatuck River dams, all the wars, on Yale Bowl, on old trails and roadways in the area, and all sorts of other topics. Situated on the corner of Pleasant Street and Route 6 in Woodbury, CT, this little park is often…read moreforgotten by the residents, except at Christmas, when the town's tree is decorated and lit. It's not included in the list of the town's recreational facilities, nor is it one of the popular sites for family picnicking. One of the reasons is the lack of parking, which makes this a great place to walk to from anywhere in town, instead of taking the car. There's a number of benches, some provided by the town, others, built and dedicated by the local Lions in memory of deceased members. The bandstand (NEVER call it a gazebo!) was also built by the Lions in 1986, and is dedicated to the memory of local composer Leroy Anderson. It's popular with local residents as a dog walk area, or as a place to sit and quietly reflect. There are several large trees, and an open space that's great for that quick Frisbee toss. It's also the place with the most advertising signs because of its location along Route 6, and the traffic light that requires cars to stop in front of them. I'm all for green space in any town. I wish this little park would get more use.

The gazebo and benches make a nice pit stop when walking along the sidewalk of route six. Like many other town greens, there is not much to do and it is not big enough for town wide events, but nice little areas to bring your family for some fresh air on nights and weekends.

I'm a big fan of the "Our Woven Community" program. It supports refugee women with opportunities to make and sell beautiful handbags, scarves and other items. I recently bought two tote bags as gifts for friends. The bags were lovely, unique, and each one included a biography of the woman who created it. My friends loved them! Our Woven Community doesn't have an official shop space in the Burroughs building, so I called ahead and when I got there the receptionist showed me bins full of items for sale. They also sell the products online and at craft fairs, farmers markets, etc. Half the proceeds go to the women directly, and the other half pays for supplies, equipment, and entrepreneurial skills training.
