Check in process was easy, just follow the email instructions, all very clear. Bring sunscreen, a hat or sunglasses. You can bring your bags and snacks. There is plenty of space under the benches for your belongings. Lots of options for seating all around the boat, both inside and out. Also 2 restrooms available. As well as a Galley with snacks and souvenirs! I didn't realize, but they also sell photo packages of the wildlife from the trip. So you can focus on documenting your group and the good time, They'll capture the animals! :) This crew was Captain Vanessa, Naturalist Ruth, Deck crew Colleen and Sara, and Galley Oscar. They were all so helpful and accommodating. I cannot tell you how warm and inviting they all were. You could definitely tell they loved their jobs. For me...So, despite Dramamine and sea sickness bands I got really nauseous; and I think my 3 year old did too but couldn't verbalize, because she passed out about 1.5 hours into the trip-so I was just kind of sitting towards the back holding my toddler mid trip. Which is about the time when the whales appeared! (Up to that point we saw different birds, pods of dolphins and sea lions.) So these whales on our trip were on the starboard side when they appeared, but I was on the port side, kinda stuck sitting with my sleeping toddler. At one point Colleen came and asked if she could help me move to see the whales, but that was easier said than done, especially not feeling well. I let her know she was sweet but we were okay. Well as the boat tracked the whales, I guess Colleen and Sara both mentioned to the captain that we were kind of stuck in the back on the Port side and the captain ended up turning the boat towards the whales so I could see them. It was the sweetest thing and I felt so seen as a mama. :) I didn't know how a whale watching trip could go above and beyond, but they did! We did a 12:30pm tour on a Monday and there seemed to be a good crowd, but they were not at full capacity, which meant moving around was an option for those that wanted to. One of the crew members took pictures on a DSLR and sold them to us if we couldn't get good enough pics ourselves. You can buy early access to the ship to pick out a good spot, or you can buy a VIP ticket to have access to your own section of the boat right up front. The things I didn't enjoy - which, honestly, I'm not sure how the crew would handle any differently than they did. Some of the people on the boat were super rude. Lots of coughing in close quarters without covering their mouths; one group of people was so hellbent on getting the perfect pictures that they all stood in front of each section of people at least once, running side to side instead of giving everyone turns. The captain did ask that everyone take turns, but the behavior stayed the same all ride. A couple of people actually stood in front of other people who remained seated, completely blocking their views. The bad: You were supposed to get there early to check in and line up, but there is nothing to do in the area, and no seating, so prepare to stand in a line for an hour if you get there right when they say to. The photo package was really expensive for what you got. 3 hours is a long time to be on a boat not learning about things - lots of lulls in programming.

Our group got to see gray whales (including a mom and calf!) and playful dolphins, and Captain Caitlyn shared so much interesting information along the way. She struck the perfect balance between education and letting us soak in the magic of the moment. What meant the most to me personally was how comfortable she made everyone feel. My mom is usually very nervous on boats, but Captain Caitlyn's calm, confident presence completely put her at ease -- and she ended up loving the trip! It was also so empowering and fun to be on a power boat run by an all-women crew. The whole experience felt safe, exciting, and unforgettable. There's also a bow pulpit walkway (with a strong railing) that extends off the front of the boat over the water if you need an adrenaline rush like we did. The view from here is incredible. An invitingly beautiful lounge area with a snack bar is a good space for those who get chilled or need to come out of the sun. The bathrooms, or "heads," were spotless! The captain was skilled and careful, and the naturalist, Melissa, was easy to listen to and informative. The crew was pleasant and helpful. A++ Our amazing day included lengthy up-close encounters with two very large pods of dolphins. Scores of short-beaked mamas and calves surfed in the wake of the bow, while others frolicked in the open water around us. It was quite a show. The dolphins were so close we could see the patterns on their skin and hear them click-talk to each other. A bit later, an even larger pod, this time long beaked dolphins, were engaged in feeding behaviors that were fascinating to observe. We even saw a dolphin stampede-- a rare occurrence. Though none of the big whales came out to play, we were definitely satisfied with our day. It was spectacular! And since the boat comes out of San Diego Bay, the trip also provides a closer-up look at various military sites on the bay side of Pt Loma and the many sea lions lounging on the buoys and barges! I'm def planning a trip for later in the fall. As for you, just do it! You'll be glad you did.

They even have a whale watching guarantee on their website that says if you don't see a whale then the next trip is free which is really neat. I arrived at 7pm for a 9pm departure. I was greeted by the crew and captain. There were only 14 of us slated to go on the 1.5 trip after the big bluefin at the outer banks. After boarding the vessel, the crew helped stow gear, informed everyone to sign the manifest, choose a bunk, and then get the tackle ready for the next day's adventure. The brief seminar concluded and everyone proceeded to articulate his own tackle according to the crew's recommendations. The line and hook sizes were determined with the actual bait in mind. Fish the bait size, not the hook size seemed to be an echoing theme throughout the trip. A good night's sleep was had by all as we arrived at the Cortez boat in flat calm and even greasy seas. Even though we were one of the last boats to arrive at the grounds, the captain quickly put us on jumping and active 20-80lb bluefin tuna. The crew chummed the area and soon the first angler yelled, "Fresh one," as the glint off of his gold Trinidad began to sing the song that all fishermen love to hear. A steady pick started to happen after the first fish was hooked. Most anglers were getting bit on the heavier line, but the fish seemed to be eerily shy of my 40 pound test line. Nary a bite happened that first drift. Bluefin are usually pickier than a 5 year old around broccoli. This day was no exception. I asked the crew for a bit of advice and they said to keep working and plugging away. Frustration started to set in as rent rod gear fishermen were being pushed to their limits as I continued to do the tuna shuffle around the boat without much luck. Then I decided to do take a chance. I dropped my line size from 40lb to 25lb test and the results were immediate. I hooked up my first fish after a 10 minute soak of a sardine, but after 15 minutes of battle, I pulled the hook and Charlie the Tuna swam back to the depths. The crew encouraged me to keep fishing. I asked a fellow passenger what time it was and he said that it was only 8:45 in the morning and we had all day to fish. By the time I pulled the hook on my second hook up, 25 fish had been landed with most being in the 60-75 pound range. I knew my time would come if I just kept working and stayed positive. My Torium 16 would soon find out if it was up to the challenge. Line started to pick up speed coming off the reel as I took a legitimate swing at a big bluefin. The hook held and the battle began. For the next hour, a crew member stayed pretty close to me as I gingerly worked the tug of war game with the big fish. The crew member continued to give little pieces of warranted advice on how to land the beast. After an hour into the fight, I started to get a bit tired. The crew member said that the battle was coming to its conclusion but more fish are lost at the rail than at any other time because fishermen get excited when they see the prize near the surface and start to get a little "horsey" with their movements. Slow and steady worked during majority of the battle, so I continued the same steady movements as the fish began to rise. The beautiful colors of the bluefin shone brightly in the mid-morning sun as the fish laid on its side and was appropriately double gaffed by two the crew members. The encouragement during the battle didn't go unappreciated. The rest of the day went pretty much the same with some personal bests and some heartbreak at the rail. Everyone eventually landed at least one fish as the entire boat went home with limits as well as a memories that will get us all through another week of work. On another note, the toughness award goes out to the captain of the Diawa as he toughed out a rough incident with the bait tank chair. After a quick visit to the galley for medicine and a bandage, he was back on deck with his crew. It was a stellar day which was only made better by the excellent service of the members of the Diawa Pacific.

Received a cap from H&M landing a couple of months ago and because we live up in north county was…read morenot able to return the cap as it was non adjustable and was too small. Went down there yesterday and spoke to a guy who said we cannot swap the cap with an adjustable one because it would confuse the inventory listings . Even though the cap was brand new and still had the sticker on. I then asked to speak to a supervisor, I rotated to the counter behind me and spoke to a woman about the situation. She went online to find my "information ", it's a brand new cap with H&M written on the front, wasn't looking for cash just wanted a larger size. She wasn't able to properly assist me and I asked for the manager, she said he wasn't here but to come back later. Well guess what I did come back over an hour later and the mystery manager was not back, guess he must've had a giant lunch. Anyway after speaking to two people one who supposedly was a supervisor and came back over an hour later decided it was not worth it to waste any additional time. Better customer support is drastically needed by H&M landing. Recommend you check out Oceanside fishing companies before using this company.

They had a wide variety of options--from salads to entrées and appetizers and everything was well done. Plus, there were unlimited desserts, including fruits, cakes, and more. They even greeted us with champagne, which was a nice touch. There was also a DJ onboard, which made the vibe even more fun.
