We had the most incredible private 6-person sunset whale watching tour with Captain Caitlyn! From start to finish, she was knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely passionate about marine life. You could tell she truly loves what she does, and it made the entire experience even more special. Our group got to see gray whales (including a mom and calf!) and playful dolphins, and Captain Caitlyn shared so much interesting information along the way. She struck the perfect balance between education and letting us soak in the magic of the moment. What meant the most to me personally was how comfortable she made everyone feel. My mom is usually very nervous on boats, but Captain Caitlyn's calm, confident presence completely put her at ease -- and she ended up loving the trip! It was also so empowering and fun to be on a power boat run by an all-women crew. The whole experience felt safe, exciting, and unforgettable. Disappointing and unsafe experience--Zero consideration for passenger well-being We traveled all the way from Ohio to California specifically for this extended blue whale tour. While we are experienced boaters and understand that wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed (we didn't see any blue whales, which we know happens), we were absolutely shocked by the conditions and the captain's lack of judgment. The water was incredibly choppy, and we were given no warning about how violently the boat would be thrown around at high speeds. It was so rough that I felt unsafe letting go of the handrails for a single second. Within 30 minutes, one of the six passengers began vomiting and continued to do so for the entire 7.5-hour trip. A few hours later, a second passenger became violently ill as well. What ruined the trip for us was the complete lack of empathy or leadership from the captain. Despite two passengers being visibly incapacitated and miserable, she never offered to head back early or mitigate the situation. Spending nearly 8 hours in terrifying conditions on a boat filled with illness was miserable. I cannot recommend this tour and wish we had been warned. Informed consent would have helped us...and taking us on the water with those conditions felt terribly irresponsible. read more

If you're going whale watching in San Diego, I truly believe Gone Whale Watching is the best choice. We went whale watching twice this month, and both times we were lucky enough to see Fin whales with them. Captain Dom and Erika are incredibly knowledgeable. They explained so much about whales, dolphins, and their environment in a way that was easy to understand and fascinating. They use drone to search whales which I really like. The atmosphere on the boat was very warm and welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable throughout the trip. Highly, highly recommended! We will be back soon! read more

Well.... my bestie and I came down for a girls only trip. This has been the highlight of the week! We booked the 6 person only trip as we wanted a more intimate trip for my friends 1st time whale watching... and it was just that!!!! So chill, so fun, SOOOOO BEAUTIFUL OF A MORNING! We were fortunate enough to see 3 Humpbacks and I'll say hundreds of common long beaked dolphins!!!! They swam alongside of us, played, sprayed us and entertained us! We went in early November which is humpback whale season and were lucky enough to see 9 whales, 7 of them traveling together! In two instances they got too close to the boat on accident (they try to stay a good distance away to not disturb them but doesn't stop the whales from swimming right next to the boat!) but it was amazing to see. There were also literally THOUSANDS of dolphins we got to see swimming all around the boat. The driver and guide were knowledgeable and helpful (Tai and Jess). They recommended coming back in June/July for blue whale season! Overall well worth the $! read more

We had the best experience with Gone Whale Watching last weekend! I'm still in disbelief about how many dolphins and whales we saw on our tour. We saw more wildlife on this trip than we did in Hawaii on a similar type of tour. Our guides were great at pursuing sightings, explaining what they were doing, what we were seeing, and what to look for. This was my 5 year-old's first time on a boat and she had a blast! I was on the fence about bringing her out for a 2-hour tour, but I'm so glad we went. I have been on a number of trips with Captain Dom and the rest of his crew over the past 4 years or so and they are definitely my favorite whale watching trips. I have been out with several of their boats with varying captains and crew members, but always had a great time and enjoyed their knowledge and passion for these gentle giants. As a photographer, I really appreciate the smaller boats that really get you in the right spot for the optimal experience and the crew is always trying to ensure that everyone on board gets everything they can out of each trip. You never know what you will see of course, but I've had amazing experiences seeing blue whales, fin whales, breaching humpbacks, orcas, and much more. Update : They have refunded me as originally said and offered to explain to me in a call about the error that occurred, and also offered additional compensation. I was not interested in dealing with the company any more, but am glad they have the decency to make things right. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This company has shady business practices and tries to trick money out of you by lying. After my partner and I went on a trip with them and unfortunately saw nothing, the captain told us that everyone would be given another trip for free. He repeated multiple times that we should book another trip, then respond to the confirmation email to get it fully refunded. I should have known better than to trust this, as they proceeded to ignore the email and only responded after multiple phone calls across multiple days. They then told us that they would not be honoring what the captain had said and can only offer a partial refund. I'm shocked that a seemingly reputable business would pull this type of bait and switch to trick you into paying them again. Do not support this company. There are plenty of whale watching companies that do not lie and trick you. I understand that it is not within their control what we run into on a trip, and would not have expected any kind of compensation, but telling us to rebook for a full refund then not honoring it is rather scummy. read more

Gone Whale Watching provides multiple trips for the consumer. They offer a typical whale watching trip, about 2.5 hours, a local trip that takes you close to the action without going too far out to shore, and then they offer several extended day trips, ones that can go up to 8 hours in length. As an avid whale enthusiast, I took both. Here are my stories. Day 1 Before showing up, Gone Whale Watching does an amazing job communicating with me about how to dress, where to be, as well as what time to be there. This is so they do not have any issues with people upon arrival and minimize the questions so we can get right out to sea. They told us to get there by 7:45 am, as we set out at 8 am. You are also advised to dress warm as it gets cold out at sea (I know this all too well, again, this is not my first rodeo). Upon arrival, the check-in process is quick, a waiver is signed, and then they divide the group up into two or three groups depending on how many people signed up. Being only one person in my party, it was easy to send me with anybody, but they put me on the first group out, with Captain Michael. Do not expect fancy boats here. These are no cruise ships that offer snacks, no upper decks to take in a few. These are basically six seater speed boats with an extremely limited restroom facility (it is basically a port o potty with no #2 facilities, so eat and drink light before boarding - they tell you this too!). Once the safety speech is given, you board, and are quickly taken out to see, this one about 8-10 miles offshore. It is not long in coming that we see some wildlife! We see about 200 common dolphin, and they are jumpy and all over the place. It is so majestic that the tour could end right there and it would be awesome. However, we have bigger fish (mammals) to see, so they continue on and so do we. Not long after, maybe 15-20 minutes, we see our first spouting, two spouting in fact. Considering it is July, that means that it is blue whale season. Blue whales are the largest mammals that ever lived, and boy are they everything they say they are. These animals are ENORMOUS, melon to tail, and watching them dive and surface is just something to cherish. What is that? Shortly after arriving to the location we were expected to arrive at, we see a humpback whale throw itself out of the water for a full body breach! I know a humpback, this was a humpback, and others in my party saw it too! Unfortunately, and despite Captain Michael's best efforts, we never saw it again, not even surface. However, we saw a cow and calf blue whale combo and that was amazing to watch as these things in their natural state. Just as we were enjoying ourselves though, it was time to go back. No worries though, I will be back here tomorrow to enjoy more action. Or so I thought. Day 2 This time an email comes out beforehand to get here by 6:45 am, so I am up real early to be here as this one really can go offshore. Excited by the previous days events, I was really hoping today would be an amazing day. Again, we are separated in three parties, all led by Captain Dom. On my boat I was helmed by Captain Kyle and his First Mate Taylor. We are whisked out to sea and it is not long before we see our first wildlife sighting, a Mola mola, or a sunfish. Once it passes, we continue on. However, unlike yesterday's events, when the seas were calm, the seas got increasingly rough, and rough they got. Unfortunately for me, I tend to get seasick (I wear sea bands) when the boat rocks, in addition to the high swells, which reached as high as NINE feet. I was advised to move to the back of the boat and lay down, and as I do that, my adventure is only beginning. I started retching and feeling it the whole way, to the point where I started to feel miserable. The seas get worse. I get worse. We travel further south, even hitting Mexican waters briefly. Instead of the weather getting better, things only get worse. The skies get grayer, and I feel more sick. Eventually, yes, I will say it, *it* happened. Not what you want to happen on an all day tour, but it did, and I was so weak and disoriented that I almost missed most of the action, except I did get to see more blue whales and another Mola mola. We supposedly saw some dolphins as well, but I will put supposed because they were far out and nobody else in my party really saw them. Basically, for an eight hour journey, I was miserable for six of them, unable to really take it all in. -- This was a bit of a complicated review. Overall, I really enjoyed using these folks for whale watching services. Both crews were enthusiastic and did a great job making everybody feel welcome and comfortable. As much as seeing the wildlife is their aim, they are also in the service business. They want customers to return and to recommend them to others. However, know yourself before you pick the trip you want to take. That way you will enjoy it more, and be sick less. read more

You've seen Captain Dom's viral videos of marine life all over social media. We both love the ocean as well as seeing marine life in their element so we contacted Gone Whale Watching as we wanted a change of scenery and were in need of a dose of vitamin sea. Now when you go on a whale watching tour, it's a gamble because you never know what you'll come across. We went all in, booked our date, and on the day before our tour, Captain Dom called to confirm that our tour date was a GO (YESSSS!!!!) We swung by Marukai to grab food supplies for our day, and also scouted out the location(Gone Whale Watching is located near SeaWorld and were staying out in Chula Vista) so we could get an idea of the time and distance it would take since we were just visiting. The security guard there even told us to snag street parking early to avoid parking fees. When our day arrived, we got there half an hour before launch time, popped a Dramamine, and said a prayer asking God to first keep us safe on the water, and also to let it be his will to allow us have time with some of his creations in the ocean, used the restroom, boarded our 6-person boat then we launched at about 6:45 am. This was a scheduled 8-hour experience up and around the coast towards Catalina Island, and within the first hour, we saw Flying Fish gliding over the water and First Mate Kyle spotted a 29-foot Minke Whale that was very playful (which is rare) and very interactive with us, zig-zaging the boat, doing belly rolls, and pretty much showing off in our presence. Even Captain Dom and Kyle declared that this was the most awesome Minke Whale experience! The whale ended up hanging out with us for a good hour before we decided to continue up the coast. Tell me that wasn't God's presence... Further up the coast, we spotted a playful mega pod of Dolphins where Captain Dom even suggested we LEAN FORWARD OFF THE FRONT of the boat as they swam just below us! One of them even raced us keeping up with the boat at top speed as we left them in search for other whales. Another rare appearance came from a few Brutus Whales with a playful baby who amazingly breached out of the water! Tell me that wasn't God's presence... We also saw a school of Bluefin Tuna in the distance feasting on a school of anchovies and ran into two more pods of playful dolphins on our way back before conditions started getting choppy and finally returning at about 2:20pm ending with another surprise guest as a huge sea lion hitched a ride on the back of the boat next to Mrs. Q and I for a bit! Other companies out on the water were not so lucky, no sightings in the Newport/Dana Point area as we heard over the radio, and one company spotted a pod of dolphins, and another company had only seen a school of Yellowtail and no marine mammal sightings. Both Dom and Kyle made it that much more fun answering any and all questions we had and their experience and expertise in these waters, and of marine life species made this such an awesome day. Other companies were also out on the water and everyone is on the lookout for each other for any type of sightings, and I must say we were the very fortunate ones that day. So fortunate, that we later found out back at the dock that Captain Dom was about 80% close to canceling our tour date! I'm telling you, GOD IS GOOD... Humpback Whale season is just around the corner, so if you're looking into going: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO... Tour dates may be canceled due to weather conditions Dress in layers, cover up(hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, mask at all times) Stay hydrated, and pack food supplies...you'll be out on the water all day Dramamine just in case for sea sickness Besides Captain Dom and Kyle, 4 people are allowed on each tour (2 seated up front, 2 behind Captain Dom and Kyle) if you're more prone to get seasick, grab the seats IN THE BACK Park on the street to avoid parking fees Don't be LATE! I took a bioluminescence tour at night and the rest of my family also took the whale watching tour. This is THE company to use. They were so friendly and knowledgeable. Captain Michael and Anna took us out for the bioluminescence which is algae in the water that lights up when disturbed. It was a really fun and relaxing tour. The water was completely glass- no waves at all. It was a perfect night and we cruised all around the harbor and then stopped at times to stir up the bioluminescence with some poles and brushes that would make the algae glow when thrust into the water. Captain Michael was able to take us to specific areas where the bioluminescence was really prevalent and they both answered all our questions and seemed to be having just as much fun as we were. Their boats hold at most 6 passengers so they are able to go to pinpointed locations very quickly as opposed to other whale watching boats that are big and slow. I highly recommend them and only wish I had also gone on the whale watching tour also! read more

WOW ! What an amazing and exciting experience going out with Gone Whale Watching! Captain Ty and Shannon were incredible! They really made for a special trip. They were very knowledgeable and provided us with a lot of information about the marine life we saw and the underwater canyon below. It was really educational. The boat itself, is cozy with some room to move about and I think is an ideal boat for photographers attempting to capture shots of the wildlife. We got up close with some dolphins riding the bow, which made for cool videos on our phones! We also found some humpback whales and it was exhilarating! We were so close and low that made for some magical shots. I really enjoyed my afternoon out with Gone Whale watching, Captain Ty's expertise was much appreciated and I also felt safe with them on this smaller vessel. It was comfortable and super cool! I had a good experience on Gone Whale Watching. I signed up for the 2.5 hour trip. We unfortunately did not see any whales but saw thousands of dolphins. They were super close to the boat - it was awesome to experience! Because we didn't get to see any whales they offered us 50% off to rebook another day which I will definitely take them up on. We were on the boat Hanna Hou. It was a smooth fast ride and every seat seemed to have a great view. They aren't kidding when they say to dress warm and wear layers. The temp drops significantly once you're cruising out there. This is the best way to go whale watching. First, they limit the tour to 6 people. That's so they can go out on small but comfortable boat and get out farther than with your larger groups. Then, they are all about the experience of seeing and respecting marine life. We saw gray whales, a large pod of dolphins and then a small mola mola which is the largest bone/sun fish - the Captain with his eagle eye spotted it and then we hung out with the mola mola for 10 minutes or so. Captain Tom and volunteer Shannon along with us kept us informed, answered our questions and are just neat people. We picked up two Mylar balloons out of the ocean to take care of the marine life. I found out about this company because the owner used to work for a different whale watch company in town doing drone work. He branched out and started his own business. I think Dominic is super talented and would love to have him as a tour guide. On this day, I knew he wouldn't be there because he is in Hawaii and honestly I'm not even sure if he operates any of the tours. Regardless, I opted to go with his company because I wanted to support him. I see on social media how he has great success locating whales and other marine life. And yes, I know, nothing is guaranteed with ocean creatures. On this particular tour, I really felt like our guide wasn't that great at what he does. We saw no whales and a few very small pods of dolphins. Literally, I felt like he wasn't sure what to do so we just kind of aimlessly cruised around for a couple of hours and came back. Also, I could not hear half of what he said. Not a total loss though as I love the ocean and boat rides. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. For a third of the price I could've taken the same cruise company I did last time and had the same experience. read more

Captain was Ty. We signed up for a whale watch that was on a small boat - 6 people it said. We show up and it's a large boat with about 25-30 people. We questioned it and the assistant said that it was a good thing...can't say it was a good thing for us. The speaker is poor and no one could hear the captain talking. Maybe that wasn't a big loss because he barely attempted to interact with the group at all. We signed up for the 2.5 hour tour and saw zero whales. Even more unfortunate is that the captain did not communicate with us that we were headed back, what we were looking for, etc. When we got back to the no wake zone, the captain made sure we could all hear him asking for a tip. He then said, although it's not common for the company to do this, we could contact the company for a 50% off voucher for our next purchase with the company. Not sure it would be worth it given the experience but for us it's especially disappointing as we were leaving San Diego the next day. We spent over $500 for 4 of us to have a disappointing experience with minimal interaction from the captain and no whales. The whole boat was extremely underwhelmed. What appeared to make the company special (small boat, personalized experience) did not happen for us. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend it. read more

I have done a few whale watching tours before but definitely sticking with Gone Whale Watching from now on. All the trips I've done in the past have been with large group boats (30-40 people) and that's where Gone Whale Watching shines. The small nimble boat (we were 6 total) was able to cover a lot of ground which meant we were able to make it from La Jolla to the tip of Point Loma. Right off the bat we saw Gray Whales and, after a tip from a fellow boater, were able to zip over to an area that had spotted a Blue Whale! What an amazing trip! I love (LOVE) whales and have been whale watching numerous times - boats of various sizes, different countries, different whales - and this was one of the best experiences I have had, hands down. We were fortunate with great weather, but ultimately the crew is what made the difference. We only did the 2.5 hour tour which I knew meant the chances of us finding a humpback weren't quite as high as on the 5-hour tour so I had set my expectations. I was blown away. They spotted a humpback and were able to track and swim alongside it as it moved. I had never experienced that before, but with the small boat size and the ability of the crew to anticipate and track the whale's movements it was incredible. I've been out with multiple Whale Watching companies in San Diego through the past few years and the only one I've returned to is Gone Whale Watching! Dom and his team are super knowledgeable, and always provide the best experience. Whether it's dolphins, whales, seals, mola mola, sharks, bioluminescence, etc. I don't think I've ever had a trip with them where we didn't see something fun.
