Wow!! Sometimes you just got lucky. Was rolling thru town and stopped at the first Mexican restaurant and was super glad we stopped. The service was very good, but the food was exceptional. It wasn't the traditional "TexMex" wholesale food reserved. It was much more authentic tasting and novel. Was so glad we stopped here and would recommend you visit as well. The ambiance was good, the food was tasty but the service was atrocious. We went on a Tuesday night around 6pm. We were a larger group of 6 and the restaurant was not full. They were either understaffed, untrained or short staffed in the kitchen. They took forever to take our beverage orders then they could NOT refill them because they ran out of the beverage so they offered a different one. We placed our food orders and had to change 2 orders because they were out of chile rellenos (how do you run out of a primary entree in a Mexican restaurant). When they brought out our plates, 2 of the 5 plates were incorrect and had to be redone and 1 of the 6 orders was missing, yes they only brought out 5 orders because they completely missed one. They took forever to serve us. The server, Alex, was very polite and apologetic but whoever was working in the kitchen was making a lot of mistakes. The whole meal took about 2 hours from the moment we arrived to the moment we walked out, as previously stated the food server, Alex, was very kind and the food was tasty but as a whole the experience was bad, I will NOT return or recommend this establishment to anyone. I'll give them 2 stars because the food they got right was tasty and the servers were nice about everything. read more

We are from San Diego so hard to impress when it comes to Mexican food. This food is GOOD. I honestly think it's the best tortilla soup I've ever had and I eat tortilla soup everywhere I go. The nachos were interesting and amazingly tasty with big pieces of chicken, homemade tortilla chips and just the right amount of topping. These are not big American type nachos. This family owned Mexican Cuisine restaurant is such a gem. The food is just consistently good and creative. So flavorful and serves up in an appealing presentation. We got to try the Barillla Tacos this time and they came out on a wooden platter with customizable toppings and the Barilla dipping sauce. Creative presentation, fun to eat, and delicious! The horchata was creamy and cold! They had other aguas frescas flavors available too. My husband loved the Steak Carne Tampiquena especially since they have the option of topping it with an egg-which he always chooses to have over easy. The chips were fresh and warm when served pre-meal. I love this little restaurant and look forward to visiting it each time we get over near Athens. The staff are friendly and kept the beverages topped off and the chips/salsa refilled! We have never had a wait to be seated. The cooks take pride in the food they serve here and it shows. Ate here tonight for the first (but not the last!) time. Evelyn was my server and she did an excellent job recommending my entrée (enchiladas de Don Pepe?). For an appetizer I had the Jalapeños Loco's and they were so spicy (and amazing). The food was all very flavorful and everything was cooked as it should be. I appreciated the quick service and frequent refills of my drink. This is not a fancy place but the food is delicious! It is BYOB which is nice. Staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Chips are served warm and the homemade salsa is Delicious. Corn tortillas are hand made and hot! We had the carne tampiqueno and the pollo Dona Maria. The steak was tender and very flavorful. The chicken was tender and really good, as well as all the sides. This is my first time to El Arroyo. The servers were very nice and friendly and the ambiance was pretty good. Mercedes took great care of us! The music was quiet but was good for visiting each other. The booths were large so provided ample space for us all. We tried the yellow and the white cheese dip. The white queso was good but the yellow dip was AWESOME! Just give me a spoon please. I tried the Cocktel de Camaron aka shrimp cocktail. It was small for the price. The flavor was good but the shrimp were a little too mealy and the crackers stale. The enchiladas were smaller than every Mexican food restaurant I've ever been to. The street taco was very slippery on the outside but the taste was great. Portions of rice and beans were also pretty small. Overall I would probably not make a special trip to come back here but if I was already nearby, I'd come for more tacos. read more

Their white cheese queso was also excellent. Have been there a couple of times now and love their chili rellenos with a great ranchero sauce.
