The hotel is clean and the decor appropriate. The pre check in is good but no real person on site to assist anything,! BEWARE. They want you to take photos of your ID and your face s video in order to check in. I was on the phone with their customer service. After half hour I finally get into the lobby. Finally someone showed up it took another half hour. I had to be on their phone to take video. This person doesn't speak English, another lady who I thought might be the owner, she used foreign language to instruct that person the whole time. After traveling the whole day, this would have been a nice place to keep staying at. It's clean & small which makes it feel cozy. My daughter and I travel every 3 weeks or so for an allergy program about 5 min away from the place. So it's really a convenient, great price to stay at. However!!! I ran into the manager, complimenting her about the place, was friendly. I asked if we could stay an extra 2 hours since check out is at 11 and my daughter's appt was at 1:45pm. She said she would hold our stuff and keep it safe if we would like, that way we didn't have to leave our bags in the car. My bag has no lock since it's a hand carry bag & she seemed trustworthy and friendly. She said when I'm ready to text her at her direct line. When we came back after my appt, to pick up the bag, she responded right away and handed me my bag. When I got to the airport and packed a few more things, I found a random key inside my luggage. I've had my luggage the whole time with me, it's new and I've never the key in my life! So I asked her the next morning if it was her key. And as you can see through our messages, she says yes but after I tell her I found it in my bag, she claims it's not her key and thought it was. As a manager, not recognizing your key seems a bit odd. She says she has the main key. Told her it's a copy of a key. Anyways, long story short, I would not leaving any belongings!! Someone can be going through it while you're gone!! Do not leave your stuff!! ***UPDATE: when upper management investigated the incident, she claimed it's the same key she gave the plumber leading to confusion. Umm.. that's a unique key. I'm staying at the Kasa Niche Hotel here in Redwood City for work, and I have nothing but positive things to say so far. I didn't choose my hotel, my company did, but I am super pleased with it! It's a virtual front desk check in, so everything is done from your phone before you get there. I wasn't sure how it would work, but it ended up being super easy! Right before check in time I was sent a code for the front door and a code for my room. I had no trouble getting in, the common area was modern, clean and well lit. It reminded me of a nice apartment complex-- each room had a touch screen key pad to type in your code. I found my room easily and my code worked. There is no elevator, so if you're in a second story room it is stairs only (no luggage carts). My room was modern, well lit, clean and stocked with some waters. I was seriously so impressed with how nice everything was. The room is small with a king bed and small desk, but it's perfect for a work trip. It had a fridge, a large tv, and was stocked with an alarm clock/sound machine/iron in the drawers. The bathroom was clean, modern and had a cool light up mirror. There is a staff member who is usually around cleaning/tidying who is super friendly, she asked if I needed any help getting in and made sure I got into my room when I was fumbling my room code one day. It was very quiet at night and I didn't hear anyone in nearby rooms. Overall extremely impressed and I'd definitely stay here again if ever in the area! read more

Extremely sketchy do not book here! I recently had the misfortune of finding the Kasa Niche through my credit card. From what I saw online it looked like a great deal for a new hotel in a convenient location. I needed a last minute place to stay for work and it seemed like a perfect fit. Everything fell apart when I arrived there. Right off the bat, no parking, your only option is a pay by the hour lot or metered street parking. Once I get inside it's a run down, dingy, smelly motel that just got a fresh coat of paint. This is where things really start to fall apart. No one works here. Not exaggerating, there are no staff. Where you would expect the front desk to be are instead some posters instructing you to "check in online". The website is confusing and very clunky. They want you to do a full scan of your face which I am not at all comfortable with, then submit all of your credit card information through a website. I do all of this in a hurry despite my hesitation because I'm worried about getting to work on time. Then I run into another issue. They changed my dates. Somehow my stay has been pushed back to January 2024. The only option I can find is to call a 1800 number. They refuse to help at all and tell me all I can do is book another stay on the website. They won't fix the problem or help in any way. The website won't let me book for that day so I'm unable to get a room at all. I ended up having to find a room at a completely different hotel and run there, barely making it to work in time. After all this I try to talk to my credit card company about what happened. I simply want to be refunded for the stay that I wasn't able to use. The customer service rep is horrified at the story and attempts to get a refund on my behalf. She eventually comes back to the call and tells me that in 20 years she's never encountered a place like this and they're refusing to refund me despite it being the hotels error and them having months before the newly scheduled dates. All I'm left with is warning you. This place is beyond sketchy, don't let the cheap rates and doctored photos fool you. Steer clear and don't get screwed like I did. read more

We had a terrible experience with the customer service at this hotel chain. Full disclosure, we booked a non-refundable room. We had planned on driving to the hotel (6 hour drive), but because of heavy snowfall and rain in Southern California, all the roads were closed and there was a travel advisory letting people know that the driving conditions were very dangerous and only essential travel was allowed. I looked at flights, but they were prohibitively expensive. I let the hotel know that we weren't going to be able to drive up and asked for a refund or a credit for a future stay. They would not budge off of their "non-refundable" policy. I contacted the booking company and my credit card company for help. Neither could convince the hotel to make an exception because of the extreme conditions and danger to us if we had tried to make the drive. The hotel kept ALL of our money for the 3 night stay! And, I just heard that those roads have collapsed because of the heavy snow and rain and are closed again for repairs which may take several months. If you're on a budget, nothing beats this place. It has a couple of hostel like rooms with shared bathrooms, and some private rooms. I stayed in one of their private rooms for two nights/three days, and had a pleasant stay in all. The location is pretty awesome, right on Main street in Downtown Redwood City. So, you're spoiled with restaurant choices, coffee shops, etc. But, that also means that parking can be tricky. The hotel does not have its own parking lot, so you have to rely on street parking. There is a big public parking lot right behind the hotel, but it tends to be full most of the time, except after 7pm/ 8pm. If you do happen to find a spot, parking is pretty cheap - $1 per hour from 10am - 6 pm. Thankfully, I was out for a good part of the day and did not have too much of a problem with parking. The hotel itself is nice, clean, and inviting inside. Fast checkin and checkout, free starbucks coffee, hot chocolate and tazo tea in the lobby - pretty neat. All these pros help you overlook some of the problems with the room itself. You get a tiny tiny room, I believe it's only about 150 square feet. Actually, you'll be surprised at how much they've managed to fit into a 150 sq. feet apartment - a twin bed, working desk and chair, full length mirrors,a mini fridge and microwave. The private bathroom is proportionally much big compared to the room, and pretty nice except for low water pressure. The room is clearly dated, a little damp, and has almost no natural light entering it at any point of the day. The bed is the worst part of the stay. It will give you a backache, and was full of scratches. The room also needs a coat of fresh paint. But probably, I should not complain given the price and the other pros. Torturously noisy. Why this two story hotel which has street noise on two sides of it - did not think to install sound proof windows is beyond my comprehension. Especially on weeknights as its a commercial area with early morning trash and construction. Not to mention the blinds that block very little light. I am ok with the self check in and AI chat that pretends to be service. But I am not ok with not being able to make simple request - like which side of the hotel you want to be on, even after multiple stays. Or getting offers like a late check out that are really just a solicitation for more $$. I also feel unsafe when sketchy folks come home noisy and late and there is zero security. What good are rules if there is no way to enforce them? Then the pricing is all over the map. I just checked it on a Tuesday and it was $411 - a better hotel three blocks away was $159. A four star luxery hotels 2 miles starts at $200. I guess this is that type of "dynamic pricing" that says if they only have one room left they are gonna try to put the screws to you. I stay here about once a month or less - on weekends which are cheaper but would stay much more often if it was not for all the above issues. Was a LITTLE apprehensive with the thought of having to leave my room to shower and use the restroom. But I do this at home. There were 3 people that "made my day(s)". Do not know any of their names. 1. Gentleman that turned out to be the manager. Very friendly and helpful. Gave a quick tour before I even checked in. 2. Lady working graveyard shift when I was there, Tuesday and Wednesday night. Also very friendly and helpful. Always had a smile on her face. Great attitude. But did not live around there. Will expand on that later. 3. Morning shift gentleman. Also friendly. And he recommended Alana's. Very good choice. About not living around there, she couldn't really recommend any place, which I was very glad she didn't. Recommendation: have a book, if you don't already, that recommends place to eat at, places to go, things to do, etc. Made up from employees and customers. Just a thought. read more

Worst hotel I've stayed in for a decade! I arrived at 11:30 PM to check in (advised them ahead of time) and asked for a quiet room. This hotel apparently has "shared" bathrooms for some of their rooms and I was put directly across the hall from two communal bathrooms which sounded like they had the pressurized flushing mechanisms on the toilets (extremely loud). I would note that the rooms were soundproofed poorly and my door had a 2 inch gap under it which let in light and noise from the hallway. The bathroom doors also seemed to automatically slam shut when closed. I could hear everyone walking up and down the corridor all night long. In short, it was a very interrupted night. Several times an hour, the bathrooms seemed to be in use and I was awakened each time. At about 2 AM, someone puked his guts out and I could hear every detail. I think I was awakened at least 10 times throughout the night. Regarding the room itself, the overhead light didn't work from the wall switch. I looked for a bedside light to turn on - too bad, no bedside lights at all. I stumbled carefully across a dark room until I got to the bathroom which, thankfully, had a light. The room was stuffy so I turned on the fan which wobbled and hummed noisily. I was pleased to see in the AM that they did supply shampoo and soap in the bathroom. I would note there was no breakfast, no coffee machine in the room. I think they had coffee downstairs. I checked out in the AM instead of staying several more days. The front desk clerk told me that I should have told them about the room during the night and they would have given me a different room. If it had been 9 PM, I would have switched rooms. But at 2 in the morning, the thought of getting dressed, packing up everything, and moving to a different room further down the same hallway didn't seem very enticing. I asked to speak to the manager about the room and perhaps getting an adjustment on the bill. The manager wasn't in but "would call me that afternoon". He never called. The next AM, I left another message and was told he would call me. He didn't call that day either. Finally, I called a third morning and the manager finally got back to me only to tell me he couldn't do anything about the bill without calling the "owner". Late in the day, he called back and was very happy to report the owner would like to give me $20 off my $160 bill. I told him to keep his $20 and said I would rather write an honest review of the hotel. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. read more

What a shady place. While it's in a nice location with nearby shops, restaurants and bars, it can get pretty dangerous to walk around in the area at night. We booked a room for three nights online via hotwire for a wedding down in the South Bay. The doors are actually locked after 9pm so if you check in after that time, you get locked out if the manager isn't in the area. There's a musty smell in the small hallway, somewhat similar to the smell you encounter when you enter a bikram yoga studio. The room is pretty small but nice with a microwave, desk, free wifi and a fridge. For the price you pay, it's definitely not a bad place to stay. However... When we came back in the afternoon after our second day, our hotel cards were deactivated and we were unable to enter into the hallway. We called on the manager and apparently, we were only registered for 2 nights instead of three. The manager wouldn't let us in unless we paid for an extra night, so we conceded. When we finally entered into our room (which by the way, was not even made) we showed him our confirmation papers stating that it really was for three nights and asked for our refund. The manager refused and told us to call hotwire for the mix up. So we decided to call hotwire and the representative was friendly enough to try and settle the dispute. Even when the representative contacted the hotel manager, he STILL did not offer a refund for the extra night that we paid. Luckily, hotwire was the one who offered us the refund but the hotel still managed to get away with that extra $80. So. If you happen to book with an online agency with this hotel, be sure to confirm the amount of days that you stay at this place or else they'll swindle your money out of you. Also, I'm pretty sure there were also bedbugs because I got a couple of bug bites upon waking up after one night. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! read more

The first thing I thought when I entered my room was "This would be a good room if I wanted to slam some heroin and pass out in a puddle of my own vomit". First of all, the room I was given did not have a bathroom. There are shared bathrooms in the hallway. I have never heard of such a thing, but then again, I've never stayed in an eastern European hostel either. I imagine the conditions are similar. I was initially booked to stay here for 2 weeks on business. I was out after the first night. The walls are thin, the storage is horrible, the beds are murphy beds, and the room smelled of piss and air freshener. In hindsight I should have left immediately and booked a room at motel 6. I am not going to dispute this place is a good deal, at $40 a night how can you go wrong. But all this gushing about the place by the other reviewers a bit over the top or things have gone downhill very fast. I stayed for four days. Lucky for me I was busy all day long and only came in to sleep and I can sleep through earthquakes. WARNING: Light sleepers beware. First, the place is a little beat up and while the rooms are clean the common areas are kind of filthy. Trash cans in the hallways fill up fast and seem to linger Why, because it is so inexpensive a lot of people live there semi-permanent. So it has the look and feel of a shelter. People loiter around the hallways and outside to smoke. It seems some single mothers and alcoholics live there and the place smells of dirty diapers. Children are up late crying into the night, TV sets blaring loudly all hours and the smell of alcohol is very prevalent. My first night the Internet did not work so they moved me to the front of the hotel to use their wireless connection which was slow as molasses. However, I did finally patch into this rooms network connection and got a circuit, but it too was rather slow. Perhaps the entire hotel shares a single DSL circuit, so you get a very narrow slice of bandwidth at best. Busy business people who check email and have a lot of Internet work to do every day will be inconvenienced. My room was just above building's designated smoking area on the sidewalk. So most of the time I was privy to semi-inebriated folks smoking and talking loudly from 4AM to Midnight with a continuous stream of smoke coming in through the windows, open or closed. I don't know why they even bother to keep the rooms non-smoking. The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything in the surrounding rooms. It was very loud all the time. Beyond towels, bedding and a few toiletries there is absolutely nothing else. I mean not even plastic cup or a pen to write with (and the front desk did not have one either). I even had to get a chair from the hallway because my room did not have one. The vending machine was half empty the entire week, there was no coffee in the morning that I saw. The manager was never there it seemed. The lobby area reminded me of the scene in the movie Beetlejuice where in the darkness strange odd people hung out on the couch waiting for their number to be called. The only reason this place can be called a hotel and not an apartment is because technically everyone must check out after 28 days. They pay a small storage fee to keep the stuff in the room and the check right back in again. The entire place is kind of like an SRO. Parking is an issue too, most of the time you must park in the back of the place in a City Parking area that is full in the evenings and daytimes. Because of all the clubs, theaters and restaurants it is a very busy area. All that said, it is relatively clean. The location is right in the heart of old town Redwood City with many clubs and restaurants nearby. So that is one positive. But the negatives far outweigh the positives to consider this place a serious destination for a business traveler on a budget. I will not come back here. Even at $40 a night. read more

I did not know that this hotel wanted to charge my card for $150 security deposit on top of $70 rate. I only had $100 available on my card when I booked the room. Which left me an available balance of $30 when I got there. I arrived there at 11pm on a Sunday night. Can you imagine if I showed up alone and no where to stay for the night? Thank God my girlfriend was with me. We were able to charge the $150 deposit on her card. I asked the attendant if there were any 24hr places to eat nearby and he did not know. I have stayed here numerous times (5+) and I can honestly say this is one of my favorite places to stay, for the: - Affordability ($40-$50something depending on what room you want) - Cleanliness (& I don't just mean 'tidy'. they wash their blankets and bathrooms) - Vintage charm - Silence! Seriously it's really quiet here. The staff here is incredibly friendly. You get in's & out privileges 24/7 because they give you your own key-card. Meaning you don't have to worry about being greeted at the door by management wearing socks, a robe & bed-hair! La Vic's is right across the street and open real late. The price for how well maintained this place is - well, amazing. I've stayed at many hotels when I used to travel with my ex, and very few places were both inexpensive and clean. This is one of those places, where you wake up in the morning and shower because you enjoy it, & not feel like you have to furiously scrub your body. It's close to everything downtown, with Cal-train only 2 minutes away (opposite side of the block). The rooms are small, but for me this only adds to the charm of the whole experience. Most of the low ratings here are because of inaccurate expectations. This is one of those places where you get exactly what you pay for. In this case, you pay for a bed. I stayed here for a few days while waiting for my apartment lease to begin. This was a cheap, conveniently located spot. I chose a room with a shared bathroom; you can get a private bathroom for a little extra money. The room was pretty no-frills: tidy, but not spotless. Sink, small fridge, beaten-up old microwave. Clean sheets and mirrors, but some stains on the carpet and walls. No evidence of bedbugs. The bathrooms were in OK shape, but you're going to want to bring your flip flops. Wi-Fi's a little spotty, but usable. No complaints about the service. I showed up a couple of hours before my scheduled check-in time; they stored my bag in a secure room and recommended a cafe nearby to get some food and coffee while I waited. read more

This isn't that bad of a place. I ended up here because I was in between homes and they promised a DSL connection. They delivered. The room was tight but it had a Murphy style bed that folded up into the wall for more daytime space. They also supplied a mini frig, microwave and had decent muffins, cereal, coffee, tea and such in the a.m. front room for free. The bathrooms were in the hallway but private after you closed & locked the door. The size of the place and lack of windows sort of made it feel like being on some kind of space station but I never was hassled by anyone. There was a small market, bar and a few restaurants down the street. Amazingly I did NOT encounter any bed bug issue and I stayed here for almost a month. It's maybe 6-blocks MAX to Caltrain. If anyone was up all night smoking crack or crank they sure WERE QUIET about it. I saw plenty of that in North Beach & the Tendernob so I am not a dumb ass about this shit. Everyone on trip advisor whines unless they are in an expensive Marriott even if they actually stayed at a Motel 6 or here. They all think they deserve the Marriott or Westin or something worth more then 39 stinkin' bucks a night. No problems. Found a room to rent back in SF. read more

Yes the room isn't the biggest but it really doesn't bother me because I'm not expecting much for $100 a night in San Francisco. I also had seen a review saying there were bed bugs, well I've been here two nights and I'm bite free.I'm using the hotel's wi-fi as I type this, I have to say it's really fast Internet which surprised me.One big draw back is the entire first floor is sharing a hallway bathroom and shower. Luckily theres a cleaning crew that comes every morning that keeps the bathrooms clean. The continental breakfast consists of juice and coffee, that's it..... luckily there's a lot of places to eat breakfast in the area. The cal-train (a high speed train) is a mile from the hotel which will take you all the way to downtown San Francisco in 40 minutes for $5. The last thing I want to bring up which annoyed me but I didn't let it ruin my trip is the rude front desk. I met three different front desk clerks and only one was tolerable. My friend stayed here when he was in Redwood City, the few time I went inside and into his room made me sick to my stomach. The halls have an awful oder while the rooms look really grimy. Also a bunch of junkies loiter in the front so I miss took the place for a rehab center. Its a wretched excuse of a hotel that thinks their business is failing because non-guests are parking in their lot. So they will harass you if you park for even a minute in the front. I learned this the hard way since I parked in the front for a minute and the jerks called the cops. Now I have to pay $40 ticket. This is a good place to stay and a good deal. I stayed a while back (Oct 2010) and had such a good experience that I promised to write a review, just haven't had the chance to until now. It's in a nice location with good shopping, grocery store and food/bars nearby. It's across the street from savers thrift store which was a huge added bonus for me! I originally booked here after failing to find any reasonable sublets on Craigslist and ended up being happy enough that I stayed the whole summer. The price is pretty good and the manager upgraded me to a room with a bathroom at no cost, and was very accommodating to keep me in the room at that price for several months. The rooms are clean and not much different from a normal hotel room apart from the small size. The walls are fairly thin so you can hear the other guests from time to time, so maybe not great for a really light sleeper. The surrounding area is really nice, with many cheap and good restaurants within easy walking distance as well as a movie theater. The Caltrain is less than a 5 minute walk away. The only thing I felt was a negative was the character of some of the other guests. As a large male I never felt unsafe, but it wasn't quite the same feeling of security one would get in a normal hotel. Overall I do recommend this place for a short or long-term stay as long as the negatives i pointed out aren't deal-breakers. read more

I like this place. The room is comfy, the accommodations are nice, the provided toiletries smelled great, and the tv was super nice with a great channel selection. Plus free tea, coffee and hot chocolate in the lobby ad infinitum? I was really happy, considering it was only 130 a night in an expensive area. If you spring for the room with the private bathroom, the bathroom is hella nice, too. Staff was nice, too. They even gave me a little discount my first night because I came in super distressed after having a horrible, horrible day. A little kindness and consideration goes a long way. The front desk guy even helped me carry my heavy bags all the way back. Great place! read more
