I found this hotel just doing a google search. Cottage Hotel is really a hidden gem tucked away in the area of Menlo Park and Could easily be passed by without notice. You would have to drive, into what is a very beautiful property delicately decorated. It has a feel of a romantic, quaint intimate feeling, yet catered also to the corporate clientele. The location parking and everything Is very convenient and the experience of check in was very friendly. The agent greeted us and gave me a cottage cheese and a yogurt to my son, seeing we arrived in the late evening close to 9:00pm. The rooms are modern and very clean, and the decoration has a kind of minimalistic feel to it, but very classy. The bathrooms are Unique with white and red shades. The breakfast was probably the highlight of our stay having a full on breakfast buffet, eggs, bacon, muffins, scones, and a full-on coffee machine, and the seating was very nice, but small. Rooms don't run cheap but I do feel it's worth every penny for the experience. They also forgot to mention have like this mini backyard in the room, super cute and private. read more

This quaint hotel is a hidden gem and easily missed if you don't pay attention. We were fortunate to have been gifted a night stay here and it was very comfortable and enjoyable. Our room overlooked the pool which we did not use because we were too comfortable in our room. The room had 2 TV's - one in the living area and another in the bedroom. The only con was the cable reception/connection was fuzzy for the channel we were watching - so it was not a good connection. The bathroom had every toiletry you could possibly want from make up removal, shower cap, two different types of soap, etc. I've been to fancier hotels that hardly had anything. They get 5* for stocking the bathroom with many amenities. There was coffee, water and tea in the room as well as in the office/reception area. There was also a little dish of assorted candies (snack size kit kat, almond joy, etc.) for those with a sweet tooth. Free parking which is always nice. Complimentary breakfast from 6:30 - 9:30 had many choices: guava juice, orange juice, milk, packaged cold cereal, oatmeal with various toppings, yogurt, fruit cup, hard boiled eggs, bananas, apples, small pastries, assorted breads you can toast, folded omelette, egg bite and sweet potatoes. What more could you want? There's something for everyone! You can easily drive downtown to shop with lots of restaurant options. Room rate will vary depending on the date. This is a cute little boutique hotel. Stayed here during a little Silicon Valley staycation. Hotel is located close driving distance to Stanford, Stanford Shopping Center, downtown Palo Alto, and about 20-30 min drive to Filoli Garden. I booked thru the Chase portal and was able to use points to pay for part of the bill. PROS: clean, comfortable, recently renovated and beautifully appointed and modern spaces. Staff was friendly and helpful. Free breakfast (nothing fancy, felt like sausage, eggs, etc were cooked from frozen, but it's free!) Free water, coffee, tea in the main office. We had a little private backs yard! Though other rooms balcony's and patio space overlook the pool so it's not that private. More affordable compared to nearby hotels. CONS: My only issue is upon arrival there were leaves and debris inside the room close to the door. I noticed there's a gap between the door and the floor where I assume they came in. I think they should fix this. CONCLUSION: an overall lovely stay, would go back, would recommend! read more

From my warm informative greeting from Lilly the hostess I immediately knew I was in good hands. She was so accommodating and gracious! My room was perfect. So clean and fresh that one doesn't always get at a large corporate hotel. I enjoyed the morning birds singing from my balcony and the peacefulness of the room. I had little to no awareness of outside guest noise. I'm not a breakfast person but am sure it would be as lovely as the rest of the facility. I enjoyed free parking very close to my room! Warning: Long Review The property is tucked in what seems like an oak grove with a bungalow cottage feel. From the first day over a year ago meeting the staff and doing a walk through for our daughter's and now son-in-laws wedding the experience was positive. As with large events there are many details and conversations all of which were positive. Staff made us feel confident that our stay which included many family and friends traveling from as far as India and back east in the states would be a good one. They did not dissapoint. Lilly at the front desk was always pleasant, making conversations with everyone about their stay, the big event, their travels, she was just GREAT! She was extremely efficient as well. Maria had many exceptional breakfasts made for us, I heard so many compliments from our family and friends. No cold cereal here! I will try to upload pics. With abundant fare that you can tell is from quality ingredients, you could choose to serve yourself from silver chaffing dishes on stoneware with gold flatware, glassware for juices, stoneware mugs for tea and coffee (24 hrs.), or choose a "to-go" cup if you are on the run. Higher quality food and the coffee machine that was the talk of our group throughout our stay with 17 selections from Plain Americana to Expresso, Latte's and so much in between. The offerings of additions to add to you cozy drink are yummy too. The cleanliness of the grounds and the aesthetics with benches, tables and adirondack chairs spattered around as well as a beautiful fire feature makes for a zen for 1 person or couples stay or as in our case a group stay that almost booked every room. We would be able to congregate with smaller groups throughout the day to larger groups around the fire. Such a contrast from a traditional hotel filled with hallways, slamming doors, elevators not seeing anyone or able to have impromtu visits over breakfast or coffee. THE WEDDING WAS THE MAIN EVENT AND WAS AMAZING, where people that did not know each other before got to make freindships and then there were those that got to revisit and catch up. The Cottages was an extention of that. Generational and Geographical. The rooms are very clean and the beds very comfortable. Each room has there own patio. Sitting on our private patio, drinking coffee in the quiet morning watching a gaggle of geese fly overhead and black and grey squirrels play in the oak trees, surreal. The bathroom, the designer who may be the owner did a wondeful job. I would have to think there was a good deal of R & D here. Being somewhat of a DIYer's mate, I see details that reveal the efforts made for style and functionality. The rain showerhead with the optional wand as well as the thoughtful bar for leg shaving. The motion dim night light was great for night visits. How many times at hotels do your toiletries fall off slanted small shelves in the shower? Not here. They have a good size shelf with sides or you can you use their plentiful, wall mounted spa like products. They have little touches of amenities throughout. Oh and the blow dryer, ( I ended up using because I left mine at my daughters) was amazing. LOL, I ordered one right then and there! THE COTTAGES WERE THE BEST! read more

This place was a very nice stay.... It's a quaint property with top quality amenities. The room was very clean and nicely decorated with taste, which I appreciate so much. The breakfast was more than a continental - with omelettes, waffles, French toast, fresh fruit cup, hot oatmeal with a lot of fixings... we were happily full. One of the most affordable, quant places one could stay while visiting Stanford and the surrounding area. The staff are very friendly and the hot breakfast has plenty of options. I'd rather pay to stay here than pay an additional $150+ to stay at the Sheraton closer to Stanford campus and still hear the Caltrain zoom by. They have a handy magnetic do not disturb sign so you don't have to worry about a door hang one flying off if it gets windy. Overall clean and mostly quiet place to stay. Super walkable to downtown Menlo Park and the Caltrain station. read more

What an amazing experience. Even in the rain, this place was a wonderful place to spend a honeymoon evening. I love that this hotel was conveniently located off the main road of El Camino Real which is helpful for people who may not have a GPS or who get lost real easily. we checked in and the service was friendly, and knowledgeable. We appreciated the gift that we received from management and just how wonderful everything was from beginning to end. The rooms were comfortable, warm, and met our every need. Checking in and checking out was simple and to add to all of that was the peace and quiet of the area. This hotel is amazing! My mom and I only stayed one night but the whole time we kept saying "wow, I love it here" and we wish we had more time to spend there. The owners are wonderful and you can tell how much care and thought they put into the rooms. The decor is fabulous everywhere you looked, beds are soft and comfortable, it's just a clean beautiful space. The breakfast here was amazing also! I stayed in the largest room which has a living room, mini kitchen and king bed. It was like staying in someone's pool house. So comfortable, loved it! It would have been nice to have a stool at the little island in the kitchen for Zoom calls because there is no desk. And, the housekeeping needs better training -- they did not replace my coffee pods or soap after the first night, and the second night they left dirty wine glasses in the kitchen sink and didn't replace the paper coffee cups. Real mugs in the rooms would have been nice. The breakfast is the best I've ever seen in a hotel though (with a Jura coffee maker) so next time I won't use the Keurig anyway. I'm sure they will work out the housekeeping kinks and overall this place is a 10/10. read more

This is a great place to stay. Clean, great breakfast, friendly staff. The property is very cute and updated. Very close to Stanford hospital. I absolutely recommend and would stay there again. There was only one downfall is that there is no elevator to the second floor. If you cannot do stairs, you should request a first floor room. read more

I have lived in this area for years, but didn't discover this hidden gem in until yesterday when we decided to move. Everything at this hotel is perfect -- the room and all the amenities, the quiet and tree covered courtyard, the simple but nicely prepared breakfast, and the friendly staff. There is thoughtful attention to details that chain hotels at the same price range can't match. It reminds me of beautiful boutique hotels in Asia. The only reason that a 5 star isn't given for this review is because a bit of uncomfortable encounter with the front desk person at the end of our stay. Loved our stay! Worth the money! Our spot was right next to the office, which was nice cause it's open 24hrs and they have snacks, fruit, coffee, hot water, and lemon/lime water for free. The employees were very pleasant on the phone and in person. Also, outside our room we had the vending machine for sodas to buy, and the ice machine. The only thing was that the ac was kinda loud and cause we were near the office and stairs, for the upstairs room, and near the parking lot, i could hear some noises, wasnt bad though. As for our room, amazing! Loved it! It was like a little apartment. Nice and clean! Had everything we needed and i loved that right outside our room we had a beautiful patio and a gate that opened to the pool area. The area is filled with trees so it truely feels like a vaca stay. We had a microwave, fridge, keurig for coffee, and a nice assortment of everything u need for your coffee. They also supplied 2 bottles of water. I first stayed there to have back surgery at Stanford Hospital. They were very accommodating; everyone had smiles, the grounds were kept spotless, and they immediately moved us when our room shower overflowed. I then came six weeks later for my six week follow up, And the owner looked at me straight and said hi Tom. There's no better service to a person and have their name remembered a month and a half later, and anytime I go back to the Bay Area peninsula I'll be staying at The Cottages. read more

The Red Cottage Inn isn't a hotel that will perhaps wow you versus its more modern competition. However, at the same time, everything it advertises is on point. Let's first talk about location in case you're Uber/Lyft-ing here. Red Cottage Inn is behind the business complex out front (past the nail salon). Second, service was okay. I was a little confused at first because the front desk wasn't manned but someone was definitely there. This area is also where the free breakfast is serviced which I thought was interesting. Next, let's talk about the room itself. For under $200, the room was fairly comfy although I had to mess with the air a lot to make it comfy. The bed also was okay - a King size bed with one of those laptop/eating mats that was unique. There was a TV, a nice working bathroom, two free water bottles, a fridge and other basic amenities. I also thought it was kind of nice/interesting that my room directly led out to a small patio area that was next to the pool. Granted, when I was there, I didn't see any guest use the pool but thought it might be nice for pool users and also a little strange for those that may not use the pool. Do note that the hotel does require you to drive/walk/Uber/Lyft to other areas as it isn't exactly close to anything. Be prepared to walk about 15-20 minutes to get to the Downtown area. The lobby does hold your luggage behind the front desk as a heads-up. The only other big tip I would have as with most hotels is to try and directly get your reservation through Red Cottage Inn rather than a third party. I used a third party site and couldn't get a refund which was on me and not docked against Red Cottage. So again, I feel a little bit at odds here because the hotel wasn't exactly 'wow' worthy but for being in the area for whatever the reason, they will give you what is advertised at a relatively comfy and okay price. read more

Terrible customer service with shady policies. Booked a room that I tried to cancel within 24 hours (approximately one month prior to my arrival). They refused to allow me to cancel. I ended up having to dispute the charge with my credit card company that eventually ruled in my favor--although only after much back and forth. Completely unreasonable company. The Red Cottage Inn is a quaint little place in a quiet neighborhood. Amenities are nice. Rooms seemingly newly remodeled. Clean, modern, and quiet. However, try to avoid room 207 as the night lighting outside the front window shines with the light of a million suns... If only I had a can of black spray paint to paint the window as black as my soul after a night of glaring suns and no sleep. Doesn't seem to be a problem with most of the rooms though. read more

I can't speak for other rooms in this establishment but we stayed in ROOM 126 and were very disappointed. I will speak to the single, biggest concern -the shower. When we turned on the spigot the pipes in the wall rattled so hard and loud it was like a locomotive coming through the wall. Not only was it difficult to take a shower at this level of noise- right next to your ear- but the low water pressure was about half of normal and so it took longer to complete the task. This was not only an issue for us, but I can't imagine how the room next to us would fair if someone in 126 were to take a late night or very early morning shower. I phoned the girl at the front desk. She was familiar with the issue and gave me the pat response: I am so sorry for your inconvenience. I will have them look at it again, but it is a problem with "high" water pressure. And that was it. Since this was probably a low-level employee I decided to deal with it at check out. Next morning the man at the desk asked me if we enjoyed our stay. I replied in as polite a tone I could manage- Do you really want to know? He didn't say a word and kept on completing the check out. Why ask if you all you want to hear is, yes? Following his silence I told him Room 126 never should have been made available. Nor was this fair to people who would stay in the next room. His coworker's response was my complaint last eve was the first they had heard of this and they put it on their list and would take care of it. No reduction in the room charge, nor an apology. The shower was a problem, yet the way this was handled was worse. Next visit, for $169, we will drive a little farther and stay at the Sofitel. read more

I stayed here recently on my trip into the bay area. After reading reviews, I decided to stay here as oppose to the Westin in Palo Alto. I wanted the more intimate feeling of an inn. I have to say, I did miss the luxury component of the Westin but I do like the charm of this small inn. The only complaint I have about this place is that the pictures and website can be a little misleading since the actual place needs a lot of updating. In addition, the inn is located next to an empty lot making it appear quite sketchy when you think about it. All the rooms are not the same. On my first night there, the room I stayed in was ok. Unfortunately, my ac broke down on a very hot day and they couldn't fix it. They tried their best to fix it to no avail. Since it is an inn, it takes time for the repair/maintenance person to come check it out. This can be a bit stressful. Fortunately, they didn't take long to upgrade me to a better room with more updates since they had no other room available. Despite all of this, customer service was excellent. The girl helping me was super patient and friendly. They were so nice to comp my first night of stay along with a bottle of wine. The comp was great but the bottle of wine was a nice gesture. So I appreciate them going above and beyond in terms of service. As others have said, I enjoyed having a fridge/microwave in my room for leftovers and snacks. I also enjoyed the decent breakfast available each morning consisting of bagels, croissants, toast, hard boiled eggs, danishes, cereal, yogurt, and fruits. I also enjoyed the occasional cookies I was able to grab one of the afternoons. All in all, this place has a charm to it and if you prefer an inn, this place would be the place to stay. read more

We have stayed here a couple of times, as we are in the area often for medical needs at Stanford, It is conveniently located close enough to Stamford to avoid traffic, although not walking distance. No restaurants next door or walking distance, but plenty driveable. Both times stayed in the suite, rooms are clean spacious and nicely decorated. Suite has a nice sitting area, great bathroom. Only major complaint is mattress is worn and uncomfortable for two. This is unfortunate, as sleeping is most important when choosing accommodations. This is sad, because everything else about this establishment is great! Hope they change the mattress in the one bedroom suite, and we will be back, until then will be staying elsewhere. read more

In an area with lots of overpriced hotels, this one's a great value and their welcoming staff make you feel like you are staying in a family's guest house. Great location right off of El Camino Real in Menlo Park with ample parking. Shady garden-like atmosphere, which we loved as lots of flowers and trees were in bloom. We had a private garden patio in addition to the shared outdoor areas to enjoy. Fresh cookies and tea were available in the afternooon and the continental breakfast the next morning was varied and satisfying. Rooms appear to have been remodeled within the last few years and were quite spacious. We had a room with 2 beds, coffeemaker and a spacious fridge/freezer. We were surprised how quiet the place was, we didn't intend to sleep in but we did because it was so peaceful there. the train didn't bother us at all. Seems like a lot of business travelers choose this hotel as it was fairly busy when we arrived on a weekday, but fairly quiet over the weekend. Super speedy wireless was much appreciated as i had to get some work done while i was there... Menlo Park is easily driveable and if you don't mind a 10-15 minute walk you can hoof it over there. Stanford/Palo Alto just beyond that. Our other fun discovery was a lovely Holbrook Palmer Park ,a little north of the hotel on El Camino Real (walkling distance on same side as hotel) which we discovered is a 22 acre city of Atherton public park. Would be the perfect place for a walk, tennis or running with some historic buildings to enjoy along the way.
