When you're from out of town and your loved one is going through health issues, having to find an affordable/safe place to stay can be overwhelming. Pros - Price. - Clean, no frills room. - Mini fridge and microwave in room. - Close to Stanford hospital (10 minutes depending on time of day). - I felt very safe here, especially with the guard stand in the parking lot. - No additional charge for parking, like nearby hotels. Cons - Parking. - WiFi is hard to connect to and spotty. - Noise/sounds carry. Bring a white noise machine if you're a light sleeper. - There's no longer a continental breakfast (I assume that's a post-COVID thing). read more

Unfortunately, I came to know of Stanford House when my Daughter was transferred to Stanford Hospital. I am so thankful for the rate they charged, as other Hotels near were almost double. This place was all I needed! Food can be delivered in, or there are many options within a short drive. The room is small, but I was only in it short periods of time, and it was very clean. The Staff are all on top of their game, and friendly, including cleaning crew! A perk were the Deer I got to enjoy, out my Window. read more

This hotel is so random. It's located next to the SLAC, so there is actually secured gate access 24/7. Random people can't just go to this hotel; you have to be affiliated with Stanford (or SLAC) to get past the gate. I only happened to know about this hotel because my friend was housed there for a Stanford conference. The rooms are EXTREMELY tiny. They reminded me of Japan hotel rooms. The room only has enough space for a queen size bed, a desk, and that's pretty much it. Definitely not a place to invite guests over. The bathroom is also, not surprisingly, really small. The lobby is tiny but everything seems clean. This place seems like an okay place for your hotel stay. But like I mentioned, you have to be affiliated with Stanford in some way in order to even get a spot here. read more

I'm torn on the Stanford Guest House. Now, don't get me wrong, this is a great place to stay, if you've got business on the Stanford Campus, especially at the SLAC lab. But if you tend to prefer quick access to nightlife or... well... anything besides wildlife, this may not be the spot for you. Especially if you've taken advantage of the bay area transit systems, like BART and CalTrain, and don't have your own car. The Margerite does have a bus line that stops at SLAC, but it stops running in the evening. And the Guest House does have its own van that will pick you up and drop you off, but also only until early in the evening. Otherwise, you gotta call a cab. It's about $15 into Palo Alto. The rooms are small, but clean. Beds are twins, and every window looked out on something nice (so far). Cell reception is negligible, though. In both rooms I had to find that one little corner where I got two bars worth of reception, or had to head outside the front. They serve a complimentary breakfast in the morning: hard boiled eggs, cereal, fruit, bagels and muffins, and juice. Coffee is free all day, and was tasty. Otherwise you head up to the SLAC cafeteria, a quick 2 minute walk up the hill. Beware, they close at 3 (not 3:30 as their sign says), and otherwise, your only other food choices within walking distance are the Sharon Hill shopping center, down the hill about .7 miles, or the really nice, luxury hotel on top of the hill, about .3 of a mile away. The folks that work here are AWESOME. Seriously, each person has been friendly and helpful. The folks behind the front desk hit the automatic door when they see you coming, and all the staff are just great, gracious people. The desk in the room is a bit cramped, but there is an open plug under the desk, as well as a plug at the base of the lamp on the desk. The TV was pretty big, and I had a bit of difficulty getting it to spin enough so I could watch stand up comedy while I worked. There's a very small workout room, with a couple cardio machines, as well as a TV room upstairs, a washer/dryer, vending machines, and a nice patio downstairs you can sit at and drink coffee and read a paper. The best part of it? The price. Seriously competitive, I've stayed at places I was afraid to touch the sheets for these prices, and the Stanford Guest House is clean, comfortable, and safe (you have to pass through a DOE checkpoint to get into it). The internet is wireless and free, another huge plus over my alternate hotel, the Sheraton. All in all a great place to stay if you've got your own transportation, or don't plan on venturing far from the SLAC lab. read more

I've booked two large groups at Stanford Guest House. Both times we were treated great, from the arrangements (and numerous changes) to guest services to billing (thanks, Trisha!). Has a small workout room (may cost extra to use). WiFi throughout. (Not secure; use a VPN.) And the price can't be beat. I gave three stars rather than four only because SGH isn't open to the public -- you or your group must have a Stanford connection; there is no food there or very nearby (a Safeway and a couple of restaurants about 0.8 mi away), other than a basic Continental breakfast (included) and vending machines that aren't well stocked; and the rooms are pretty tiny (beds take up almost all the space). But if you're looking for a nice, inexpensive stay, and you have Stanford credentials, SGH is great. Note: Guests and visitors need to be on the guest list at the security gate to gain admittance. SUPER friendly and accommodating staff work here! They make you feel welcome and they will hook you up with a shuttle when you need it (thankfully!!!) This place is CLEAN and comfy and offers some nice amenities, like a washer and dryer for anyone on an extended stay...or anyone who likes to spill stuff on their clothes. They also had a nice breakfast area in the morning with this really cool machine that will hook you up with Peet's coffee just the way you like it. The coffee was EXCELLENT! I have to say I was surprised. The only drawback is that it is hard to find and you have to go through a security booth before entering. If you have someone pick you up it might be easier to just meet them at the gate. read more

As far as Palo Alto goes, this must be about the most basic place there is. But also the cheapest. I was at a conference at Stanford and it worked out wonderfully, and I would not hesitate to stay there again if I were at something affiliated with Stanford (a "normal" person can't just stay there. You need to be doing something at Stanford). I arrived pretty early, around 11:00am, but they got me right in. My room was very small, which I expected...but it was actually slightly smaller than I expected. But it had all of the basics (TV with cable, desk/chair, decent-sized bathroom), and was clean. The bed was pretty comfortable. WiFi had multiple networks available - I first used the Stanford Visitor network which was ok. I later switched to Eduroam, which was faster and great (but you need to work for a university that has Eduroam itself, I belive). During my first day, I took a run up to campus to explore, which is maybe 1.5 miles each way up Sand Hill Road. The sidewalk is unacceptably torn up for the first 1/2 mile or so, but gets better after that. Later that night, I took the shuttle to/from downtown Palo Alto (drops you at Caltrain Station), and that worked well for exploring a bit. During my conference, I used a combination of conference-arranged buses and the SLAC Marguerite bus, and both worked well. The only fault I saw was with the staff. They were pretty split between awesome and mediocre. One would be the friendliest, most welcoming person in the world (especially Consuela!), and the next would seem miserable and exude it. read more

The Stanford Guest House is excellent at fulfilling its purpose - housing that is conveniently located and more affordable than other lodging in the area, for people who are affiliated with Stanford in some way. As others have mentioned, the rooms are small - but I wouldn't say uncomfortably so. I rented a room by myself and found it more cozy than claustrophobic, but that's a totally subjective call. The room was clean and quiet, the TV worked fine, and there's air conditioning if it gets hot. The fan can function as a white noise machine in a pinch, if you find that helpful to sleep. A continental breakfast is provided at the SLAC building across the street, which was fine, the usual standard fare (cereal, fruit, pastries, coffee, etc). That building is actually really nice and has nice views to enjoy while eating. As mentioned above, the Stanford Guest House is located adjacent to the SLAC, which is run in coordination with the US Department of Energy. Therefore, there is a security checkpoint near the entrance that you need to pass before even approaching the Stanford Guest House. In case you're wondering, if you call an Uber or other ride share option, they will be able to both pick you up and drop you off from the hotel without incident. The staff is helpful and polite, and a free shuttle is available to take you to and from the medical center. Lastly, this place was so much more affordable than other nearby lodging options - definitely worth checking out on that basis alone. Summary: - Great value. - Clean rooms. It was quiet when I stayed there. - Free shuttle to and from the medical center. - Continental breakfast is adequate, gets the job done. - Booking a ride share works just fine, despite the security checkpoint. - Book early because it fills up fast! read more

This is actually a pretty nice hotel. It's located on the grounds of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and the rooms are decently furnished, with a TV, clean sheets, and a nice shower. The staff is welcoming, with a nice area to wait for pick-up. It's not very busy either, so there's plenty of parking if you're picking up someone here. The rooms are very small, location is very isolated if you don't have a car and individuals at desk, I believe are in training as they don't have the skill level in customer service you see at other hotels. I stayed at the Stanford Guest House a little while ago. It is okay for what you get. Convenient place for anyone needing to do any business at Stanford. One thing to note is that the rooms are VERY SMALL!! I felt a bit claustrophobic in my 10x10 room. You can pay a bit more and get a bigger room with two beds. I had an appointment at Stanford yesterday morning, and stumbled upon the Stanford Guest House (SGH) while searching for somewhere to stay for the night prior to. I am SO glad I stayed here! My experience here - clean room, very friendly staff, quiet, felt safe, and the bed (the primary reason for the 5 stars) - OMG, talk about comfortable! I typically have difficulty sleeping in hotels, but I had no problem at all at this place. I went right to sleep, and slept very well! Probably the most comfortable bed I have slept in at any hotel in a long time. SGH provides complementary breakfast (fruit, cereal, hard-boiled eggs, juice) and coffee. They also have a shuttle for transportation to and from your appointment(s), as well as to places around the area. The Marguerite shuttles will take you to places that the SGH shuttle does not go, and you can get a schedule at the front desk. There is also Wi-Fi at no charge, and a Safeway store nearby that is open 24 hours. Clean, convenient, safe. I would definitely stay here again, and I recommend staying here. read more

Very reasonably priced clean, modest accommodation with free WiFi and continental BF. There are shuttles to take you to most places on campus. The staff are very polite and helpful. Only negative is that it shares an approach road with a Linear Accelerator and thus there is a security guard to go through every time you come back. They check your name against a list of reservations before letting you in. Thus I am not sure if they would let a Uber car through if you wanted to be picked up. read more

The purpose of this place is to offer a convenient lodging for visiting academics, and it does that in spades! They offer free shuttle service around the area. The rooms are pretty small, but the beds are very comfortable. There is no coffee maker in the room, but a Peet's coffee machine is available 24/7 in the kitchenette area downstairs. (It was way better coffee than I expected from a machine.) The folks who work here are super nice and helpful. The breakfast is decent: hot oatmeal, YUMMY freshly baked pastries, boiled eggs, coffee, juice, and fresh fruit. The fitness center is mostly cardio machines (no weights) and offers a lovely view at sunrise. The biggest complaint I have about this place would be the bathroom. It has a corner stall shower, which doesn't offer a lot of room to turn around, and one tiny shelf on which you can rest toiletries. The sink, however, does have enough counter space for vanity purposes: make-up, toiletry bag, etc. It's in the bathroom that you're reminded you're staying at a institution I cannot imagine why anyone would stay anywhere else if they have business at Stanford in general, and SLAC in particular. read more

It's really designed for people on an extended stay: refrigerators and microwaves in the kitchen area; 24 hour coffee; extensive Continental (plus oatmeal) breakfast every morning. The rooms are sparse and cell-like but clean. Nicely furnished lounges on each floor. Fitness center is as Spartan as the rooms, but it has a great view. Unless you have a car, you're limited to either the SLAC or Stanford shuttle buses, which only run locally. The guest house offers transportation to and from the hospital. 4 stars for the pleasant and helpful staff. read more

I would definitely stay here again! I stayed here the night before an interview on the Stanford Campus. It is a very basic hotel but it was very clean and the staff members were professional. They have a shuttle that will take you to and from the Stanford Campus and basically anywhere else close by. We took it to go to the nearest shopping/restaurant area too. It was pretty convenient, although they do have certain pick up times to take you back to the hotel. The continental breakfast was also delicious! Definitely enjoyed my short stay here. read more

It's quite close to campus and has good security, as their is a gate you have to pass through with an ID/guest house sign. However, the staff needs a major change. I was here in june so this may be a bit out dated, but the staff at the front desk never once greeted the guests, and were not approachable at all. We had property stolen and ruffled through while we were gone but none of the staff were willing to file a report or apologize. Their response was that no one on their team would be capable of such an act. Even before we realized some things were stolen/looked through, we had an issue with the staff. Parking is very limited right out front but right across the street we found ample parking. read more

While not a fancy hotel the Stanford Guest House has everything we needed for a great stay. The staff was friendly, the rooms clean, and we always enjoyed breakfast. (Oh also the free mints at the front desk.) They have laundry facilities which is nice to have, an exercise room, and a lounge area with a television. I don't think you could find a better place for the price. So thank you Stanford Guest House for making our five years visiting Stanford while our son was in graduate school enjoyable and providing us a home away from home. Great place to stay if you are around the S campus. Just a short drive fro. Campus. Very safe as there is agateguard. Fair breakfast just pastry, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, etc. There is a Starbucks about 50 feet from the front door and in the hotel parking lot. We plan to stay here on future campus visits. Probably we'll forget about researching other lodging. read more

I love the Stanford Guest House. We've stayed there every July since 2008. It is very clean, the front desk staff is wonderful at all times. While it is true that you can't walk to any nightlife, that's ok for our purposes. We can drive to the main drag which is about 8 minutes away. The continental breakfast is great and is very nice. The prices go up every year at this hotel but I guess that is the same everywhere. Still it is relatively inexpensive. read more

We had to switch rooms after the first night and we needed them to move our stuff for us, but every desk clerk seemed completely confused about what room we were switching to and when. Too expensive!! Very small bedrooms. Thin walls. This place is great if you don't want to sleep. Early morning the house keeping ladies make sure to wake everyone up by talking loud and screaming in the corridors. If you manage to keep sleeping, the reception will make sure to wake you up by ringing your phone with no reason. Confused front desk and not particularly nice.
