A really unassuming but excellent bagel spot. The staff is friendly and the bagels are my ideal type --soft and fluffy in the middle with a chewy exterior that's not too hard. The flavor is excellent as well, I tried a variety of bagels and really enjoyed them. Nick's is a great addition to the northwest part of CT!

I don't know if the owner or decision maker here has ever been in a bagel shop…read more You cannot order a single bagel with cream cheese. You can only order in quantities of 3, 6, or 12. So if you are just stopping in on your way to work it should be a pass. The bagels are also super expensive and incredibly soft, does not appear to have much crust. And I would know because I have 3 bagels all to myself to critique . Super disappointed.

ORIGIN: Popup Bagels was founded by Adam Goldberg during the…read moreheight of the pandemic, when Goldberg explored bread baking. Initially sharing with friends and family, the Connecticut resident started selling via popups and pickups in New York and Connecticut. You would think New York already had a good source of bagels, but after its first stand-alone location opened in 2021, momentum developed and other storefronts were initiated in New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. LOCATION: This Popup Bagels is located in a shopping plaza in suburban Newtown, Connecticut. CONCEPT: Compared to other bagel shops, Popup Bagels a limited number of bagel flavors (plain, salt, everything, poppy, sesame) and tubs of weekly-changing flavors of butter and cream cheese (such as martini cream cheese and lemon butter) in addition to those regularly available (such as scallion cream cheese). Sandwiches are not prepared for customers -- they are encouraged to "grip, rip, and dip" bagels into their chosen Schmear. ATMOSPHERE: The interior is crisply designed with a modern feel. SERVICE: From an investment perspective, the concept is brilliantly efficient. Limited hours (7-noon Wednesday and Thursday, 7-1 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), limited choices, no sandwich/beverage prep, and online ordering encouraged, make the service efficient from both effort and material perspective. FOOD: Compared to other bagel shops the bagels are attractively packaged with open totes, inviting the aroma of the bagels to greet the customer. The exterior is covered by the topping, rather than sprinkled. The bagel is crisp and chewy on the exterior, but fluffy in the interior. In addition, tubs of smoked fish-based spreads are available. TIPS: The chain is expanding into Southern California. On Thursdays Schmear flavors change. The flavors are announced on Popup Bagels website. Although pre-orders are welcomed to ensure your pick, the online system does demand a minimum of a dozen are purchased. Ordering in person allows a three bagel minimum. The company recommends running water over the bagels, and placing in a preheated 350 degree oven for six minutes to crisp the exterior. Note the shop closes at noon on weekdays, 1 o'clock on weekends.

And unlike their incredibly high-priced restaurant across the street, al Tavolo, you might actually afford to eat here. The owners have done an admirable creating an environment that's comfortable and low-key without sacrificing their commitment to quality. After all, the phrase "a mano" translates to "by hand," reflecting how the vast majority of items here are made from scratch on site. I come here often for their coffee, which I love for its balance and low acidity compared to Starbucks, etc. But the real star of the show here are the pastries, such as a layered s'more bar the size of a small brick; a variety of gourmet doughnuts (my favorite is the lemon-filled); and "cruffins," a combination of croissant and muffin with a delicious cream filling. My usual go-to are their bagels: slightly crispy on the outside, pillowy on the inside. There's also a full sandwich and salad menu with breakfast and lunch options including salads, sandwiches, a quiche of the day, and other specials. Their breakfast egg sandwiches -- seemingly modeled on the now-famous one at Sagaponack General Store in the Hamptons -- are especially popular. While $13 for a basic egg sandwich is a bit ridiculous even for a gourmet one, you'll have little complaint once you have a taste. While you're perusing the menu and pastries, don't forget to check out the well-stocked selection of farm-fresh cheeses and other Arethusa Farm products. And, if you've got room aftewards, don't forget to stop at the Arethusa Farm Dairy Store for some ice cream -- it's also across the street, next to Arethusa al Tavolo. (Disclaimer: I grew up in the area, though I don't know any former or current employees of Arethusa.)

They're always fresh and very good size. It looks like any typical donut shop that you've been to. Nothing really stands out except that really intense smell of FRESHNESS. So good in the air. Three service is also always great. They're so kind and genuine here. Always great hospitality and very nice people serving you. They have some deal that they sell you the donuts at a discounted rate after like 5 or 6 o'clock . Something like that. I was so surprised that they offer this. I still remember the first time here when they told me about that and I took advantage of it and bought more than I originally planned on getting. I think it's a great concept I've never encountered elsewhere and think more donut places should adopt their truly great concept. Makes sense instead of throwing donuts away at the end of the day. Almost forgot to mention their coffee. It's so good for just a donut shop. It has such rich full body taste. Such a great place to frequent. Love you people here :-)

They bake everything in house, with specials on some days (e.g. Sweet Bun Sunday). The selection is vast, especially considering that everything is scratch made in-house. Aromas are enticing! We picked up an orange cranberry dream bar, studded with plenty of white chocolate chips, coconut, and dried cranberries, topped with orange cream cheese frosting and more dried cranberries. It was *enormous* and easily served as dessert for four. Also in our order: a streusel topped blueberry cake, as moist as could be and filled with fresh blueberries. It was also generously proportioned, large enough for at least two. We didn't try any salads, breakfast platters, or sandwiches on this visit, but they looked fantastic, based on what I saw on other customers' plates. I found that the super friendly owners are of Lebanese descent when I asked about the Lebanese baklava at checkout -- and evidently, they sometimes have Lebanese meat pies on offer! I cannot wait to come back to try every Lebanese food item they have, since my family is passionately fond of the cuisine (and really, everything else, too). I had no idea such riches could be found in Torrington! You can't throw a rock without hitting an Italian-American in this town -- not that I would ever throw a rock at an Italian-American :) -- but this is the first I've heard of a Lebanese-American contingent in these parts. I'm so glad Yelp led me here!

My family and I couldn't have been happier with our visit. The only downside was the limited amount of indoor seating available, but that's not a complaint--rather, just something to know if you're planning of stopping in for a bagel. If the weather is cold, the outdoor seating isn't likely an option. I highly recommend Hudson Bagels! If I ever make it back to Hudson, I'll visit this shop again! :-)

One thing I noticed about these bagels is that there's a lot of seasoning on them. All the bagels in the display seemed heavily seasoned--whether it was everything, garlic, onion, or whatever, they were covered in it. The bagel itself wasn't bad. I've had worse down in the city, so I was pleasantly surprised. Not as much chew as I'd like, but still tasty.
