I went to Nickel City for a kid's birthday party. I've heard of this place but this is the first time I've ever been. When you walk in you walk right into the arcade area they have a decent amount of games and in the middle they have the old-school video games like mortal combat, mario, etc. It's called nickel city because back in the day it use to only cost a nickel to play. The arcade games are played with a card you can reload and tickets are put on the card. Fun if you have kids and looking for something to do. The rooms for the parties are new and spacious. The worker working the bday party I attended was very efficient and helpful and kept things moving along with setup and bringing out the food.

Took my kids to check out the newly remodeled nickel city. Immediately when we got through the doors we were impressed on how much they expanded the space. There is a cafeteria now where you can buy food and sit and eat. They got more arcade games. We walked up to a kiosk and bought a rechargeable card. I liked the fact that the kids didn't have to worry about lugging all their tickets around and it all the tickets just goes on the card. Who wants to wait in line to feed tickets to a machine, not me. The kids were able to get some fun prizes to take home after cashing out their tickets. The kids had a blast and we will definitely be back.

Great for parties, and a fun throwback for those who like retro arcades. Many are broken or not working correctly, and there aren't any pinball machines. Still... a really fun time! Great remodel recently (2024)

    Fun for the whole family!

This place is a blast from my past. It's been here since well, before I was in high school and that's going back twenty some odd years. Goes to show you, it doesn't have to be fancy to be fun. If you're looking for bells and whistles, move along. However; if you're looking for some good family fun that's affordable and memory making, head on over. Check first for a groupon, it's a great deal. You get tokens and pizza. Seriously, the best way to kill a few hours and not feel like you had to take out a second mortgage to provide ample entertainment.

I have been coming here for years. Stopped by each time we went to Chicago from St Louis. They recently updated and it looks nice but no longer has the same feel. You can't take 20 bucks and be entertained for an hour any longer. They use card and points system and basically this has become a mini Dave and Busters.

If I could give zero stars I would. Rude staff and half the machines didn't even work.

It was fun and entertaining! But the place was dirty and nickels got stuck in the games a lot. Plus a lot of machines were out of order.

Northbrook's closest version of Enchanted castle. A very good value. Literally a nickel gets you very far at this arcade/kids playground.

My bridal shower was hosted just this past weekend in Studio B. It is an absolutely stunning space. Many of my guests walked in and could not stop remarking how great the place was. It is also conveniently located right next to the Highwood Metra, so my guests who came from Chicago without a car could easily come. The space is super flexible regarding vendors and decorating. Carrie, who was our main contact, was communicative and responsive! We found Loft 329 after needing to change the venue last minute from my original one. From day one of reaching out, Carrie was quick to respond, she managed to fit my mother in for a quick tour and booking was super easy. She even went out of her way to try to help us find a rental for some tables and chairs. Definitely do not pass this space up if you're looking for an affordable, flexible and gorgeous event space!

We attribute that to the fact that Wendy, HPCH's Executive Director, is such a gem of a person, so easy to work with, very communicative, doesn't nickel and dime you, allows for flexibility, is accountable, and makes you feel at ease every step of the way. It's very clear that the operation at HPCH is smooth and positive because you feel it as a client. The cafe is tiny and there is always a long wait. I almost walked away when they told me it would be a 40 minute wait but another lady in line leaned towards me and whispered "trust me, it's worth it." I was honestly surprised at how delicious and unique all the dishes were. I've never seen "brothy beans and pancetta with country bread" on any menu before. I don't really eat beans and wouldn't dare order something like that at any other restaurant. But I sure am glad I ordered it here. It was perfect like everything else we tried.

Whether you're looking to visit the farm animals, the cafe or the market there's something to see for everyone. We visited the cafe for lunch on a Friday afternoon and it was rather hard to get a table. We were fortunate enough that someone had gotten up shortly after we got there because you need to sit to scan the QR code to order. It was all a bit chaotic because someone ordered at our table and moved to a different table and so their food kept coming to us but then there was a delay on our food because of that? Not sure what happened but eventually we're got our food. We got the burger and a grilled cheese for our little. I also ordered a side hashbrowns which were so good! The burger gave us an option of pink or no pink. It had onion jam and cheese on it I did wish we had the option to add lettuce, pickles and tomatoes because that would've certainly added the crunch it needed. The fries felt like they were the bottom of a batch because they were a so tiny and mushy but overall okay I also got the aqua Fresca which tasted rather watered down but was iced and great for a hot day. They had a station for water and all the condiments but we weren't sure if it was a serve yourself or someone brought it to us because there was no clear direction so we just didn't get it because there was always a line of someone running coffee drinks there. Afterwards we went to the animals, our son had a blast seeing the ducks, chickens and goats roam around. The market was super fun to visit and it was so great to see them selling and offering products from other local farms on the area as well. Overall a beautiful place, with something for everyone and we had a great time!
