When I lived in and near West Columbia I would get to the Nick's from time to time, they were open late and served decent food at a decent price. I pass by the one in North Charleston all the time and finally dropped in. The price was... OK. The food was fairly terrible. Walked in, took a few minutes for someone to come out from the back to help me. Not great but not the end of the world. Ordered a gyro special and wings. The food came out fast, but one look and you knew nothing was freshly made. The gyro meat was lukewarm at best and the pita was cool. Most places slice the meat and throw it on the grill to heat it up and sear it a bit, not here. It was just this blah cool meat. Lots of it which was nice! But it wasn't very tasty at all. Barely any veggies on there either. The fries were just awful. I had two and threw them out they just had no flavor and no texture. It came ice cold & was not the same as what was advertised on the app. There's one piece of each meat & the meat loooks disgusting! They say the bread is locally delivered from a bakery but it's clearly not..... Unless they mean the bakery department at Walmart. This is the worst / sloppiest sandwich i have ever seen in my life. The inside was disgusting! Flies everywhere. The casing around the windows inside had dead bugs all over them. The carpet was sticky and the tables were dirty. I was craving a philly and another place nearby was closed so I decided to give Nicks a try. Like others, I had heard plenty of good things and the reviews are pretty solid. I ordered to philly's to go and an order of mozz sticks. They have a few chairs up by the front to wait while they put your order together so I had a seat. My order came up fairly quick and I was on my way. First off, they forgot to add marinara for the mozz sticks which makes them practically useless. I begrudgingly threw some together with tomato paste and spices. I was excited about the subs and could tell right off the bat they were a pretty good size. They weren't bad but they weren't great either. I've had plenty better and I don't mean in Philly, I mean within ten miles of this place. The didn't even mix the cheese in with the meat, they just rested some orange american on top and let it melt. If you work nearby and need a quick bite this place will do the job but if you're craving a top notch cheesesteak I could look to someone who specializes in them. read more

Everything I have had from Nick's has been decent to amazing. The gizzards are the most tender you'll find anywhere but your Grandma's house, and the livers are also spot-on, crunchy on the outside, creamy, not gritty on the inside. I saw everyone raving about the fried shrimp and now I know why. They are huge, perfectly cleaned - not butterflied to death, coated in a deliciously seasoned light batter and cooked to a perfect crisp. They are the dish to beat here. The gyro is decent, not the best but the best around. The burgers are serviceable and generously portioned and the toppings are always fresh. The fried items steal the show, but the other options keep things interesting. The place has been spotlessly clean every time I've been and the staff friendly and attentive. When I saw the number of people waiting in the drive-thru, I knew that I had to try out Nick's. I went inside so I could take my time to choose what I wanted to order. The employees were so nice and welcoming, and had big smiles on their faces from my first encounter. I was very impressed with the good customer service that I received. With their help, I ordered the Philly steak, the chicken Philly, and the chicken Philly. The Philly could have easily fed two people. The Phillies were huge! No need for fries with a sandwich like that! The gyro was full of flavor, and very satisfying. I took the sandwiches home to share with my parents, and they loved them too! Based on the first trip, I would have given 3 stars. I ordered the large gyro salad. Massive and delicious! Had to deduct stars because of old looking cucumber slices and brown lettuce. Still earned 3 because it was so good! Hit up Nick's again yesterday and ordered the lemon pepper wings and a small gyro salad. Everything was SO GOOD!!! Lemon pepper wings were divine and I look forward to trying other flavors. Small gyro salad was super substantial (even without a side of pita bread like the large came with) AND no brown lettuce. Second experience bumped them to 4 stars. Plus they have a drive-thru, and you know I love my drive-thrus! I walked in with extremely high expectations. 1. Because of the high Yelp rating. 2. My friend bragged about how great their philly sandwich was the other day. And 3. They have Gyro & Philly in the title of the restaurant! With my new office so close I knew it wouldn't be long before I checked Nick's out and so one afternoon I found my way there for lunch. I already knew I was getting a Gyro or Philly since I'd heard great thing about both of them. Since I was taking it back to my office to eat at my desk, I opted for the Philly combo with fries and a drink. When I got back to my office and opened the box the sandwich was huge so I was excited about the amount of leftovers I was going to have. Then I tried a bite of the meat. No flavor at all. It was also chopped up into little tiny pieces and not appealing to look at. Then I looked at the cheese that was barely melted. I tried a bite of just the meat and cheese together and I think it was either provolone or Swiss or a combo of the two. Not good. When you order a Philly it should have a great melty ooey gooey cheese that adds moisture like American or a whiz would. This cheese did not do that. The bread was fresh and toasted for a second but IMO could have been buttered and left on the grill top a little longer. So I added a little extra mayo for moisture, salt and pepper to the steak and ate half of it for lunch. The other half came home and a couple night later I doctored it up with seasoning, better cheese and a buttery toasty bun. As for the fries, they did have some seasoning on them but I'm just not a huge fan of thick fries like theirs. I only ended up eating the smaller ones in the batch that actually get crispy. While I was there waiting for my order a guy from Gerald's tire came in with a list for lunches for half the shop. He said they get Nick's 2 or 3 times a week and that he loves all their fried food and the other guys also love the cheeseburger. When I told him I got the philly, he said if I wanted a good philly to go to a specialty philly shop a few miles down Rivers so I'll be sure to do that soon. As for Nick's, I'll go back and try a Gyro since that is also listed in their name!! And maybe a cheeseburger one day. Then hopefully I'll be able to up my stars. read more

I'm honestly surprised at some of the low reviews. As far as fast food in this area goes, I would give them 5 stars. Every time I've been here, very late at night, service has always been noticeably quicker than any other fast food restaurant, but the food is still always fresh, and the quality/ingredients are less questionable than let's say McDonald's. They also give you a very good amount of food for the money. The menu also has a very wide variety of things to choose from. A lot of food...no seriously it was a lot a lot (RIP to the fries that will stay in the fridge until hubby deems they've aged long enough to be dumped) 4. Friendly and patient staff while we stared droolingly at the menu for 10 mins overwhelmed with choices 5. Drive thru, so feel free to go in your best onesie 6. They have livers! If you're into that kind of thing 7. Reasonable price range. You should be able to eat pretty well with $7-$12. Cons: 1. Scallops weren't great, pretty tasteless considering they were the "main event". Pretty good size though. 2. Sweet tea was on the cusp of being old. You know that weird taste? It was almost that weird taste. 3. Slaw was warm after being in the same container as the freshly fried food. Meh. 4. Hushpuppies were not the business whatsoever. 5. Combos DO NOT come with drink. Went here for lunch because I was hankering for a gyro. This is supposed to be one of the best in Charleston... maybe it was a bad day, but the gyro was meh... the meat was good, and it was made "ok," but still felt like it had something to be desired. Great for a quick go to, or the Gyro Salad.. but for that authentic taste, I still feel like Charleston Bakery is the best I've gotten so far. Visited Charleston last weekend for a brief and much needed getaway. Stayed with my friend who lives there and she recommended this place when we decided we wanted something good, but quick. I got the gyro and 5 wings combo. I got extra sauce on my gyro and it was so good. This was actually my first gyro and I loved it. It is really big and they give you so much meat. It is a meal in itself. I could only eat one wing and had to save the rest for later. The wings I did not love or hate. I think that's my fault though for trying the "buffalo teriyaki". It already sounds like a weird combination right? Well I was feeling adventurous so I tried it. It's a no for me. I could tell had I gotten a normal flavor the wings would have been great. They are a great size too. I also had a side of onions rings and those were great! I'd definitely recommend this Charleston spot if you want more than fast food, but also don't feel like getting dressed up to go sit down in a restaurant (whenever we're able to do that safely again). I want to say the Nick's on Rivers has never disappointed us. The Philly's have always been hot and perfectly seasoned, w/ the cheese melted and our fries have been hot and had just the right amount of salt on them. I love their cheeseburgers and you can't beat their combo prices though a combo is a waste for me as I only drink water. The only thing I've gotten from Nick's that was a disappointment was their chocolate cake it was very dry. As I see in all the reviews that got cake they were all dry apparently who their buying Cakes from doesn't know how to make cakes or how they're teaching their employees to make cakes has no idea how long or how much liquid you put into a cake. read more

A variety of foods, price is just right, and they're open super late. One of the only places I know of to get decent gizzards, and their fries are perfect. Their chicken wings are great, but their hot sauce isn't perfect. Haven't tried the other flavors. Philly cheesesteak is HUGE and delicious, it can easily feed two people. Once you get past the neon lights and the GIANT menu, some of the most delicious food awaits you! We were a little apprehensive since normally a lot of different food means a restaurant is trying to make up for something. We've been here twice now and the second time was just as great as the first! If you like gyros you can't go wrong with this one. It's piled high with meat and the sauce is delicious. I live in Hanahan and my husband works in the area, so I saw this place almost immediately after it opened; pop the word "gyro" on the sign and you've got me already. The restaurant itself is bland. Not unclean, but nothing spectacular either. I'm not here to lick the floors or be wowed by the ambiance or anything (I'm a poor college grad, after all) so that didn't really bother me. I ordered the gyro; I knew that was what I'd order before I even came. A gyro itself is $6.50, which is actually pretty reasonable. It doesn't come with lettuce, which is awesome, since I always ask for gyros without. The gyro wasn't fantastic by any means, but I'd definitely buy it again. My husband ordered the crab cake. I thought it was pretty disgusting, but he seemed to enjoy it. Not worth the $3.50 we paid. We'll go back again, though the prices are a little high (barring the gyro) for what we'd usually expect. They're open until something like 2am, too, which is a plus for all your midnight gyro cravings in North Charleston. If they added delivery that'd gain them some points in my book. read more

I was disappointed with the flavor. The philly cheese steak was decent. But I was a little confused as to what kind of meat they were even using, which in itself is bad.
