Yes, it is open 24h but that is, in my opinion, one of the only positives of this place. I am giving the two stars to them because (1) as I mentioned, it is open 24h and around here this is extremely rare unless we are talking about walmart, and (2) the waitresses are always the best, regardless of the time of the day, and (3) I am very nice. The food however, did not leave a good impression on me at all. Though I understand this may be a treat to some people's taste, I really don't like food that is extra greasy. This is South Bend's golden treasure. The food is so good you'll order an extra meal to take home (done it). The service is so friendly you'll develop a crush (done it. or maybe that was because I associated her with the food). I recommend ordering the House Croissant. I come from a day and age where I could cavalierly order it as "Sex on a platter, please," but your mileage may vary. That's really the only thing you ever need to order from here, it's that good. Get it with ham AND bacon. Make sure you ask for hot sauce. Oh, and COFFEE. The Kona coffee they serve here is SOOOOOOOO smooth and full-bodied. I usually avoid coffee in the US because it's often bitter and just a little bit keeps me up a long while. But at Nick's, I couldn't resist. For appetizers, I liked to go with the mushrooms. Sometimes they come out too greasy, but they're still multiple times better than you'd get at IHOP or Denny's. They usually run out of soup right before 0200, so get there by 0100 if you want to be sure to grab a cup of soup. This place will have a line out the door right after the local bars close. I was such a frequent (and well-tipping) patron that even when the line was out the door, the kind folks would seat me right away. During quiet hours, I had "my" table that they would usually keep open for me in case I dropped in. I also really highly recommend this place as a 24 hour or late night study spot. It's close to campus, but still off campus and away from the pressure of everyone else studying, they have the aforementioned magically delicious Kona coffee, and as long as you order food and are on good terms with the waitstaff, they will let you stay a long while. I've never been kicked out, and I've stayed over 6 hours. Please do note, however, that the restaurant was slow, and I did place several food orders, not just (free) coffee refills. I had one of the worst experiences in my life at this dinner I came for a meal with some friends and I got the most rude service of my life the sever was rude and so was the manger. I ordered a hot chocolate and I asked for it to be heated up so it would be hot and the sever said would you like me to like it on your head. And when I asked for to go boxes the sever throwed my plate of food down on the table and when I was leaving cussed me out like I was the problem (I would not recommend eattting here for anyone)!!!! read more

As far as diner food is concerned Nick's is the best! I've tried places in Indy and Chicago and still have yet to find a place as good as Nick's. They are open 24/7 and serve breakfast all day. The menu is massive and the food is good a cheap. My favorite meal is the Greek chicken. It comes with kalamata olives, feta, and four pieces of chicken on a bed of rice. Oh and it's served with soup or salad and dessert (I go for the rice pudding). All that for under $10...just can't beat it. So if you are looking for good diner food any time of day, go to Nick's. read more

This is a diner and they serve diner food. All food is comfort that way they are open 24hours a day. No matter the time day or night the food is always good. But keep in mind it is comfort diner food, nothing healthy on the menu. You have to try the pancakes, gyros, chicken fried steak and the omelets. You won't be disappointed. So, me and my friend trying to enter the restaurant. We stood by the front register to be seated. The waitress was on her phone for a good 10 minutes, and she didn't even look at us! Not even once! She was kinda rude. Didn't say hi or anything. She just took us to the table and threw the menus on the table and left. Later that night, she brought me the check and didn't even ask if I want it split. She even try to teach me how to sign a receipt. Do I look dumb to not know how to sing and leave a tip on a receipt? Came here more for the google reviews than the mediocre yelp reviews. While it wasn't bad, it was just average food. We were by a large group of younger college kids so it was kind of loud. I got the Greek platter. Others got the kids cheeseburger, an order of pancakes, and a chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich with a cup of soup. Our server was busy so she got a few things messed up with the order but nothing she didn't correct. She brought the wrong soup and when we told her she went and got it right away. Later she told us that she didn't charge us for the extra soup. I thought it was gracious of her which we didn't order it. I will say the the cream of broccoli was really good and the lemon rice was also good. They state their soups are homemade. The sandwich was to come with honey mustard which she had to go get it. It was kind of hard to eat as there was a lot stacked up. The Greek platter was ok. I wouldn't order it again. It was $9.99 and came with a salad, pities, rice, and a Greek cucumber feta salad of sorts. That was my favorite part of the dish. Their desserts look like they're bought and brought it. I'm not sure how long they're in the case. The pancakes were fluffy and the kids burger was large. I think it's a regular burger. It's not a chain and a local place so I like supporting places like this. read more

More comfort food in a less than aesthetically pleasing venue. Prices are OK, portions are good but the place is bigger than it looks from the outside and can get really busy resulting in sometimes slow service. All in all, not a bad place for a meal. read more

What a joy. My wife & I are in South Bend, IN, home of the fighting Irish while my RV is in the shop. We stumbled on this place quite by accident & what a pleasant surprise. The manager, Jenny, is very friendly & accommodating. We were promptly seated and water was delivered almost before we were settled. The menu was generous in their offerings and very reasonable in their pricing. Our waitress was excellent & rated a top tip of 23%. Our meal was served exactly as ordered & perfect. Nicks patio is open 24 hours which is delightful because I work nights. I love their skillets. I get one with corned beef hash, eggs, green pepper, onions, home fries, and cheese! So so so good. So I got to Nick's Patio and my guest and I were seated right away. We were told that we had to pay up front and that it was a policy for the late nights. We ordered our food and I paid the young man and he neglected to bring me back my change but I paid it no mind and enjoyed my meal in my company. I ordered coffee as my drink and was less than thrilled because it tasted like it was watered down, I asked if they can make some fresh coffee and they did so without hesitation however this new batch was as watered down as the previous cup. I asked about my change from my order and our server said he would speak to the manager, we finished our meal and boxed up the leftovers and waited patiently to find out about the change. After waiting for 20 minutes for the manager to figure out where my $2.03 went I decided that they could keep what would amount to a 10% tip not the usual 15. On my way out I noticed a couple of guest preparing to pay after they finished their meals and asked if they were told that they had to prepay like we were and they said no. Well that was not consistent with what I was told when we were seated by the same server. First off, know that this is a mom-and-pop type diner, not a dressy sort of venue, and set your expectations accordingly. You won't receive gourmet food here, but you should receive good service, decent food, generous portions, a great variety, and affordable prices. Whenever we have someone visiting who has been traveling for hours on end, this is usually where we bring them. There is something for every palate, and even the fussiest eaters can find something to enjoy here. It is a very casual venue, so shorts and a t-shirt are perfectly acceptable. An excellent place to grab breakfast and lunch food. It's typical diner grub, nothing gourmet but it serves its purpose. The pancakes are excellent, sausage great, bacon isn't my favorite but it's good. Can get busy on weekend mornings but they move people in and out. The hosts/hostesses and waitstaff are all typically endearing South Bend townies. I give them a TON of credit for putting up with extraordinarly drunk college students in the early hours of the morning. Well, this place is kind of a dump/dive. Our waitress was competent but ... distracted or something. Probably saw 2 old ladies coming in after church,( yes, church on Sat. nite, -Mom wanted me to visit hers) and thought the tip wouldn't be worth the effort. I like to tip well for good service - but service was fair at best. But the food! We both had the stuffed chicken breast. It was delicious! Grilled chicken breast stuffed with broccoli and cheese. The broccoli was bright green, tasted fresh with the tips charred on the grill...it was really good. The meal included soup (or salad) and dessert. It was a good, tasty meal at a good price.
