I'm the biggest procrastinator! I really wanted to wear these shoes last summer, but I couldn't find a repair shop in time before my vacation. This time I promised myself that I would do it ahead of my vacation, but again I procrastinated until the last minute. I found this repair shop and decided to call on Friday and see if my shoes were repairable in the time I needed. I'm assuming I spoke to Nick, and he said he can have the shoes to me by the following Friday (a week later) I needed them before Thursday as my trip was then. He said he can get them to me anytime after 2pm on Tuesday. I rushed over on Friday to drop my shoes off. Something to note, you have to pay before the repair which quite frankly I wasn't a fan of but I had no other option. I headed over on Wednesday and my shoes looked brand new! These shoes are so comfy and I would quite frankly cry if I had to toss them. The heel got stuck in the road on my trip and I was able to yank the heel out without ruining the job Nick had done! The reason that you might have to wait for the repair to be done (someone had a rude review) is that this shop is THAT. POPULAR. AND EXCELLENT. I brought my boots that were absolutely shredded by our puppy and had gotten replacement pull tabs from the manufacturer. The repair was well worth the wait because it is done with expertise and attention. I'd much rather wait a bit than have a repair that was done hastily and was not quality work. Decent work quality, but slow and a little expensive. Will keep them on my list while looking for others.

I brought my Thursday Boots to Nick's to have the soles replaced. I was advised that I only needed new heels since the rest of the soles were fine. I indicated that I wanted the new heels to be exactly the same height as the ones the boots came with and was assured they'll be restored back to 'factory height'. I went ahead with the service and was told it would take three weeks. I came in to pick them up recently and my boots are nowhere near factory height. The thickness of the new heels is a quarter inch shorter/thinner than what the boots originally came with, and they're also made of a considerably harder rubber. The new heels are basically the same height/thickness as the old worn-out heels. During this time, I had another pair of boots that needed the same work and had the work done by a different shop as comparison (so I know which to choose for subsequent repair work). That shop took only one week and was $15 cheaper, and the heels that were installed are IDENTICAL to the ones on the original Thursday Boots. I have three pairs of Thursday Boots in different colors and styles, but all have the exact same sole. One of the boots is only a month old so I have a reference point with which to compare the repair work. I didn't want to complain to the person when I picked them up because 1) I don't think anything would be done about it, and 2) I can't afford to wait another three weeks. And whatever could be done, should've been done initially. I feel as though whoever did the work, used whatever heel they had laying around the shop. I don't mind so much that it took three weeks or that it was more than what other nearby shops charged. Had the heels been the height/thickness and softness of the originals, this repair experience would've been very positive. I have rarely needed a cobbler in the past (or more likely...my mom took shoes to the cobbler for me? Am I ready to admit that I'm an adult now??) so when the sole of my new sneakers came off after a few uses it was time to finally step it up. For $20, the sole of my shoe was put back in place perfectly. I have no other experience to compare it to, but I found it a reasonable price to make my useless sneakers useful again. I brought in a pair of waterproof, high-top, leather Timberland boots whose soles had disintigrated. And Alan restored them to better-than-new condition, with a more-rugged Vibram sole, a soft midsole for comfort, and he treated the leather to ensure waterproofness. He told me the boots might be more waterproof than they originally were. And after testing them in last week's snow and slush, I can attest: these boots are made for walkin' - and for keeping my feet dry, even stepping through 4 inches of watery slush. I have been coming here for over 15 years (and my mom has been coming even longer). Alan has never let me down, I get all my heel caps replaced here. He has fixed, cleaned, reconditioned some of my high end designer purses that I would have otherwise had to throw away. He does an amazing job with repairs, resole, and cleaning. Everything from my favorite Jimmy Choo suede heels to my coveted Frye brown boots, you can trust him with your finest most expensive pieces because he is a shoe expert. He even recommend a stain repelling spray that helps weatherproof all my suede shoes. Even though this means I come visit him less often Alan always looks out for me. His prices are great considering the level of craftsmanship. And his consultation and honesty has been very appreciated. He won't take on a job if he knows it won't be completed well to my satisfaction (other cobblers would take on the job knowing it won't be up to standards and then would try and charge you for a subpar service). Prices are pretty comparable to the cobblers in Downtown DC (where I live) but the quality of service makes it worth the drive to the suburbs, you definitely get more than you pay for here. Stumbled across this shop in the Wintergreen mall and thought I'd give it a try, to shorten a belt. Like to support local businesses, but the results were rather mediocre. The attention to detail was lacking, or belts are not his thing. He should have taken a photo of the belt/buckle then try to replicate the original work. Instead the channel for the prong was cut too long and off center and the loop for the buckle was sewn too far back, causing the buckle to be very loose. The wait was over two weeks long with disappointing results, more like a 2-star. But being nice since I didn't state that I wanted it exactly like the original, though think this should be understood. read more

I am so, so happy I found this place. Everyone who knows me knows I am a shoe lover - I have many pairs and I want to keep them looking good for years. Look elsewhere for workmanship and maybe use this shop to buy soles for shoes in the future. Had to bring back for rework because he took the liberty to make changes to my shoes without talking to me first. There was damage to my shoes in several places and to the leather thats was not there when I brought them in earlier. He attempted to punch eyelets in the shoes where the was no eyelet and I didn't find out until I got home. Keep in mind these are my favorite designer shoes I cannot buy any more if i wanted to because these are handmade limited edition. He had a good disposition after I talked to him about the changes he made so that is a plus. The rework was okay but not what I expected based on the reviews posted but i am happy to just have my shoes back . He doesn't have the it factor for me when it comes to his craft. Also I believe there is an honesty issues I feel because he never told me about these changes or the damage to the leather and sole areas. Recommendation: There is another shop in Hungerford drive near Giant food that does better work but is more expensive. These shoes I've had for about a year and thoroughly scuffed them up rolling back and forth in my office chair and hitting my shoes against chair/table/floor. Worth every penny, without doubt. I have a pair of Frye boots - my mom's from the 70s, actually - that have naturally been though many a shine and repair. Most places give them back to me resoled and cleaned up, a decent job, and we're on our way. I could barely believe my eyes when I got them back this last time, though. Out of ancient leather, "Nick" had coaxed a deep, lustrous shine. He made these boots look like the thousand-dollar kind that make you weak in the knees when you see them in stores you can't (well, I can't) afford. People stopped me. Shoeshine guys in Union Station wanted to know where I'd gotten them done. I wish that I could turn everything I own into gold like this for sixty dollars. I would take a brand new pair of boots here just to have them work their magic. The whole sole is replaced, looking brand new itself. I don't know a lot about soles, but from the thickness and way it's stitched, I doubt it will need to be replaced for a very long time. The best part? In between dropping them off and picking them up, I had to sell my car and didn't know how I'd get out to Rockville. Nick's boxed them up and sent them to me free of charge. Being a petite person with size 4 feet (and an affinity for shoes), every time I move to a new city, the key services/people I HAVE to find are a great tailor and shoe cobbler. Nick's Shoe Repair did not disappoint. I've been going here for two years now and the 30minute drive to to the shop is well worth it. His prices are reasonable and he makes many of my 5-10+ year old shoes look almost new. Because I have a hard time finding professional quality shoes in my size, I want to make sure that I can keep them looking wonderful as long as I possibly can. The price was affordable, which I really appreciate, because after comparing all the prices around town, Nick offers competitive pricing and his workmanship is good. Since when was quality service "cheap"? I paid upfront for a modest discount on repairs of five sets of shoes on the faith that yelper reviews were legit. From a simple hight heel retouch, to frye boot sole replacements, to precious re -soling of a delicate sandal and heel replacement on one-of-a-kind heels, Nicks workmanship AND materials are of old world cobbler craftsmanship. I did have to wait 8 days as he had orders backed up but The results made it worth it. As long as I have to repair shoes in the MoCo area I will patronize and recommend Nicks. read more
