Flew in from Toronto and Nick's did not disappoint. Hands down the best steak in Calgary. Started with Mussels, do not SKIP these, the sauce and garlic bread combo is everything. Then made the mistake of ordering Calgary Cut solo. That thing feeds two. NO complaints though, in a world where restaurants are shrinking portions, Nick's is doing the opposite. Steak was cooked to perfection. But here's the hidden dish that many talked about - the Sausage Rigatoni, I swapped the sausage with Chicken pieces and honestly it was a good combo. We were in Galgary for a night and wanted somewhere close to our Hotel! We hit the jackpot with Nick's!! We were greeted by a friendly host, seated & the waitress was there within minutes. She was excellent! Loved the decor and atmosphere as well. The food was delicious. The chicken dish was so good, tender and flavorful. The portion was more than enough for me. The pizza was also very good. My husband is kind of a pizza "snob" and it got his approval 100% (I can say that as I'm a coffee snob) I've given this restaurant a 5 out of 5 cause it is a well deserved. We have been to a couple restaurants lately and the level of food has dropped significantly! It seems to me that this restaurant cares about their customers and putting out high quality foods. After years of hearing about this place we have a chance to try it. We wanted to try a little of everything. We had the calamari. $18. It was very light crispy thin calarmari rings with bit of tomato, onion and lemon. Dusted green onions. pretty tasty. we also had the Lunch steak 6 oz on garlic slice bread with salad. fresh but unremarkable and then the pizzas Diavolo. overly sweet and very spicy. flavors unbalanced. and the Kardiakafti.. lacked beef and also unbalanced flavors. I brought it to my teen and she hated the pizzas and ahe loves spice. Both of these pizzas won YYC pizza week so i can only conclude someone in kitchen doesn't know how to make. They did not taste good. great service. I would not go out of my way to return though. The pizzaa were supposed to be the highlight of the meal but just really sucked. They can't cook a steak. The NY Strip was 1/2" thick and was cooked well done TWICE After asking for Med Rare. The steak was such a bad cut both times full of gristle, thinly cut and wasn't a striploin. It was a chewy sirloin. The steak tasted of really dirty grill and was inedible. The seasoning wasn't good either The pasta was undercooked and stuck together in a ball which required a knife to cut it into bites The pizza is over cheesed meh. Nothing to get excited about. For 2 kids and 2 adults with no desert and tip it came to $192. Save you're money and spend it at the Keg as they are quality and consistent for that price range I wouldn't roll the dice on this place. Try somewhere else. Great food, amazing ambiance, classic family restaurant. This place should be a Calgary landmark. An applicable 90's quote, "I'll be back" Stopped in here based on its proximity to our hotel and will definitely be going back. Nick's is a throwback for any 80's child. As soon as we walked up to the restaurant I knew it was going to be amazing. It was like the place came out of a time capsule. The red vinyl benches in the booth took me back. My wife said she knew what the menu's art would look like before she even opened it and I knew exactly what she meant. It was nostalgia. Our server and the wait staff were all friendly. It was a quiet Wednesday night, so we had a very attentive waiter that made sure everything was just right. I'm sure if it were busier we still would have had a great detail of attention paid to us. Portions here are on the larger scale. Make sure you ask before you order too much! We had a small lunch for 5 the next day based off of our leftovers. Any place that is a steak and pizza restaurant has to have good pizza and the kids loved theirs. The pizza bread was cheesy and fantastic, with more than a paper thin crust. The meat sauce to dip it in was thick and tasty, seasoned perfectly. And portion size was on the larger size. The pizza was a nice thick slice with ample toppings. No skimping here. The house salad was tasty, if not a little over dressed. I'm a little different here given recent weight loss goals, but if I had to find fault it would be that the salad dressing was a little much. Tasty for sure, but a little too much of it. But don't get me wrong, I still finished the salad! My wife shared a full rack of ribs with our daughter and the meat was top quality. A little saucier than I would normally like, but tasty. They tossed more fries than they ate, but not because of taste. Even the fries were fantastic; nice and thick, looking like homemade. The Creole Chicken was tender, nicely seasoned and spicy as advertised in all the right ways. The baked potato came still wrapped in the foil and you can have as much topping as you like with your server at the table side offering them traditional garnishes. Nick's tries to support local, using beers from the area while offering popular national brands too. Their desserts are in house or come from the area pie shop, which is a nice touch. The bill came in lower than my expectations and that's probably the portion size muddling it. Bang for your buck, this place is better than the Canadian national chain sit down pizza joint that families flock to, and that I grew up eating in. The beef dip was dry, the ribeye steak was unseasoned and lacked flavor and thin and small for a $60.00 steak. The garlic prawn appetizer consisted of 5 small shrimps and bland garlic watery cream sauce. Very disappointing. Service was good which was the only good thing about this $160.00 meal for two. Pizza is not to my taste. Crust is flat and lacks flavour. Only seasoning on Primavera that I can taste is Garlic Salt. Meatball Pizza does not live up to description. Hometown fave Nick's Steakhouse (est 1979) is the perfect family-style restaurant for any occasion. Always great service (thanks Tandy!) and high quality meats. Try their lamb chops, absolutely huge serving size and the best in flavour. I definitely want to try their steak and lobster combo but not for the $90 price tag when there's better in competition for that at other steakhouses. My oldest son treated my husband & I to dinner at Nicks Steak House on the weekend . We haven't been here for several years. It was a Sunday and lots of people were enjoying dinner out . I ordered the lamb dinner , husband had a steak sandwich and our son had the steak and lobster . We had appetizer of calamari which was tender & excellent. And an order of garlic shrimp in a delicious sauce . They brought extra bread to soak up the tasty sauce . Our meals were generous and we were so stuffed , there was no room for dessert . I love this place. I am never disappointed when I visit Nick's, the food is always hot and made to perfection from scratch. Staff is always friendly and provide amazing service and are always friendly. We had a classic burger on this visit which was amazing and a homemade patty. Caesar salad didn't disappoint either. Okay... I've been here many times but never have I been so disappointed. First, our server was extremely slow in the beginning. Took over 15 min to get our tea and beer and put in our order. I ordered the veal and hubby ordered the steak. We shared the meatball appetizer. Nothing to write home about regarding the meatballs except they were not anything to write home about, lol. Ok. Then, the veal. It looked like a deep-fried breaded pre-frozen veal patty, and that was the texture and taste. Covered in gelatinous hollandaise sauce (for some reason?? - never seen that before!), with mashed potatoes covered in lumpy gravy, accompanied by 1/4 of a beet which was more than al dente and soggy, wilty red peppers. I know it's not that expensive (about $30), but soooo disappointing. I could have gone to McDonald's if I wanted a frozen, breaded main dish. And then to charge over 1/3 of that for a glass of wine?? Don't think so! Will NOT be going back. It has really deteriorated. A slight bump over Denny's who has better food, by the way. Pick up your socks, youngsters, and do better! read more

"Oh! When You Are in Calgary, You Absolutely Positively Have to Go To Nicks" Ok, I been there, done that, and I can tell you that you do NOT absolutely positively have to go to Nicks. It's a steakhouse with Italian options. The steaks are no different than the steaks you can get at any of the top 50% of steakhouses anywhere you go. Not tough. Not tremendously tasty but good enough. And the steaks come at steakhouse prices (Ow Ow Ow Ow Ow.) Being no fool and facing paying that amount of money I got my top sirloin au poivre. This way if the meat was run of the mill, the sauce had a chance of saving it. Well, I tried the meat naked. The meat was nothing special. The peppercorn sauce was very good. So I had a decent meal. Baked potatoes are served in foil. This is what the people want. I can't blame Nick for serving the potatoes the customer wants. But baking a potato in foil gives you a steamed poorly textured potato that needs a lot of butter or sour cream to save it. Baking a potato naked rather than steaming it in foil gives you a flavorful well textured potato. Vegetables were quite nice. Salad? Zzzzzzzz. The red meat hater at the table got the salmon with french fries on the side. She gave this plate a solid thumbs up. The other dishes on the menu may be pretty good. And I am pretty fussy about steak houses. (You can buy good steaks at a good butcher or grocery store and make a better steak at home than you get in restaurants. Supposedly prime steaks are not always so prime.) Craig Claiborne once said, if someone gave him a good steak, he would prefer to grind it up and use flavor ingredients to make an amazing meatloaf. Imagine a super duper long dinner table that could easily fit 40 people. That's the table Nick's uses to put a mountain of food on. Mini steaks (must order from your server), veal pasta, eggs benny, French toast, pancakes, salads, vegetables, made to order omelettes, hash browns, sausages, bacon, beans, potato salad, rolls, cold cut meats, and trays and trays of tasty desserts. I've driven past this place so many times and have never given it a second thought, but upon recommendation from a friend's dad, we figured we'd check it out. Even though it was quite busy, they managed to still seat us without reservations. My initial thought when I sat down was how it looked like a lodge with the large bricked fireplace, almost floor to ceiling windows and the overstuffed leather lounging chairs. Figuring I'd go with what they're known for, I got the ribeye steak (served with Caesar salad, baked potato and garlic toast) and my gf went with a Hawaiian pizza. I don't know why I always think I can eat my entire steak, because after gorging on salad and the potato (which had REAL bacon on it), I made it *maybe* a 1/3 of the way into my steak before admitting defeat. By no means was I complaining though, I couldn't wait to have the juicy and tender steak for lunch the next day (ok, 2nd dinner, who are we kidding here? The service is great with a welcomed absence of any self-entitled servers that think they are above their jobs (common here in Calgary)- Nick himself can be found bumbling around making sure everyone is happy. The ambiance is a beautiful part of this restaurant. It appears some reviewers seem to think if the place isn't replete with modern finishings, granite bars, top 40 music playlists or servers in tight dresses then its ugly and run-down but really, one should really appreciate the charm of this place with all the awesome old school fixings and decor giving you that comfortable and at-home vibe . The place is clean and well maintained while keeping the vintage nature of it alive and well. This is an awesome place to go before Stampeders games, or afterwards as their have a great bar/lounge. Nicks also has a nice outdoor patio both in the front and back. Although Nicks seems to attract an older demographic, its really for everyone and a superior alternative to the trendy/glitzy places found elsewhere that cant compare in food and service. A co-worker had Recommended Nick's to me. So about a week before the flood, I found myself in Calgary and decided to check out Nicks. The restaurant itself is large inside. We chose to be seated in the bar section so we could watch the hockey game. No problems there. We both ordered pizza. I had the "Nick" special - ordering the smallest of the three sizes (10 inches). When it arrived it had about 6 full sized slices. The crust was decent - much better than chain pizza crust. There were a lot of tasty toppings, and I was full on about 4 slices. My pedometer said I was at 12,000 steps for the day with about another 3,000 to get back to the hotel so I downed the next two slices. We also ordered ice cream for dessert. Its not on the menu as an option but our waitress was more than willing to make it available. Overall, I would definitely repeat my next time in Calgary. read more

Nick's has an old steakhouse feel, with dark row tables and warm, yellow lighting that permeates the whole establishment, giving it an authentic 70s look. The prices are reasonable and the steak is actually quite good. The pizza looked appetizing, but was far more bland than its appearance suggested. The waitress we had seemed a little tired that day and it wasn't exactly busy, but she was at least attentive. Which sometimes is all you can ask for. The bar side of the restaurant seemed to be a little more happening than the dining area with the hockey game on a bunch of screens. That part was packed with people. It's location (across the street from McMahon Stadium) makes it a great place to watch the football game or stop in after for a drink. I would definitely go back to Nick's. read more

Went for dinner with my wife and son. Hadn't been there in ages and now I remember why. The service: Our server was nice enough, but forgot to bring out my son's beverage, forgot my wife's beverage (a separate order from my son's, which we ordered upon arrival), put a bowl of baked pasta straight from the oven in front of a two-year-old, never checked back on us after our entrees arrived and then dropped off the bill and was never seen from again. One of the managers had to come process our payment after we sat at our table for 10 more minutes surrounded by dirty dishes. The food: The food was decent. The steaks were a good cut and cooked to order. The sides were skimpy and left a lot to be desired. A foil wrapped baked potato, a 1 inch slice of corn on the cob and veggies that had been steamed to death. To quote my wife, "reminiscent of what you would get in a small town diner". The value: it's not that Nick's is bad, its just that for $150 for two adults and a kid there are much better options. If you want comparable quality, there are a lot more reasonably priced options... If you are happy to pay that price, you can get much better food elsewhere. read more

Honestly for the prices I am not impressed. Went here for dinner with a group of us (5 to be exact) and the food was sub par. To start we ordered calamari, pizza bread, and bruschetta. The calamari was overly battered and lots of it was just pieces of batter with no actual calamari. The bruschetta was very odd, it didn't seem like fresh tomatoes, and it was nothing like traditional bruschetta, none of us liked it. The pizza bread was good but it was pizza crust and dip. I ordered prime rib as it was prime rib Sunday, and when it arrived there was no jus at all? I mean come on... isn't that like a customary part of prime rib? Ive ordered prime rib many a time, at keg, smugglers, and charcut to name a few and they all serve that. Also I requested medium rare and what arrived was completely well done, so I needed the jus. The potato mash was overly buttery, the vegetables were soggy with zero seasoning and the yorkshire pudding was over done but the only yummy thing on my plate. For dessert I got the cheesecake and that was tasty, but that really was the only thing I enjoyed. This place is completely overpriced for the quality- go to smugglers or charcut if you want some delicious food that is priced about the same. read more

My family has been going to Nicks for over 20 years and always enjoyed the food, especially the steak and pizza. Our last couple visits have been somewhat disappointing in terms of the service and some of our food choices but I didn't hold it against them as I just wrote them off as a "bad nights". Last night however I am wondering if there has been a change in chef or management as we had a terrible dinner and left thinking we may not return again. First of all, they have raised the prices dramatically, I specifically noticed that the steak sandwich I normally get is now a whopping $33.00!! Seeing this price increase I decided to try the beef dip instead as a more affordable option. I expected to get the usual bun piled with sliced beef and au jus to dip however what I got instead was a bun covered in at least 2" of cheese which covered a small mix of cubed beef and onions in a sweet bbq sauce. When I asked the waiter what this was as it was clearly not a beef dip he told me it was a "Philly Cheese" which I definitely did not order. He tried to tell me that I had ordered it but I know I didn't however I decided to keep it as the rest of my table was already eating and I didn't want to sit while they ate and then eat while they sat. Needless to say I barely ate, (although the fries were really good) The other meals were equally disappointing as well, my sons rice was plain and bland to which the waiter offered him baked potato toppings as an add on to it I don't think I want to know what sour cream would taste like on rice! My dads liver and onions was over drenched in gravy, and so on, not one meal was completely satisfying to our party of 8. We were also virtually ignored in terms of drink refills. This is a bit of a weighted average review. Let me explain. Over the 10 years I've lived in Calgary, I've been here twice. Once for dinner, which really didn't blow me away. In fact, it really disappointed me as my party of 6 or so all found the steaks and such to be pretty sub-standard to say the least. As this was a time before I was a Yelper, let alone a Yelp Elite, I really didn't say or write much more than... "meh, had better". This experience would be a 2 star at best. But recently, I tried out the Sunday Brunch for the first time. Now here's something to actually write about. It wasn't a huge buffet brunch, but there was a decent selection of salads, hot foods, breads, desserts and such. No seafood to speak of, but then it's not necessarily a hard and fast rule in buffet brunches that there had to be. You see, on top of the usual choose your own omelette station (which is then delivered to your table...nice touch) and that the beverages were part of the price (thank heavens, I HATE paying an extra $3 for coffee at a buffet brunch), there was the surprise of having an all you can eat all you can eat top sirloin steak offer thrown in with the whole thing. Needless to say, 2x 3oz. medium rare steaks later, I was IN. The food overall was average to above average depending on the item, but then people rarely go to a buffet expecting 4-star cuisine. But as an experience and value overall (very family friendly too), this was a winner. I wouldn't mind going back again and again over the next few years, though I was pretty damn full after that Sunday Brunch. Soooo... I would give that experience about a 3.5 to 3.75. Add the 2 together and divide, you get more or less a 2.75 rating, which would round up to 3. Sooo.. Thanks Sunday Brunch for redeeming Nick's in my eyes! read more

Before you eat here you have to know that this restaurant has been around for 37 YEARS! That is amazing for any restaurant. Restaurants come and go, but this one has stood the test of time...and you"ll definitely notice that the decor, although clean and super comfortable, is understatedly retro. I liked the vibe here. There's a fair sized restaurant area and a large lounge with a cozy brick fireplace. It's usually packed Friday and Saturday nights. The owner's son played with the Calgary Stampeders once upon a time, so there's lots of Stampeder memorabilia. It wouldn't be completely unrealistic to see some football players digging into some steaks while you're eating. My friends and I had pizza, Greek salad and Caesar salad. The Greek Salad was delicious and had some bonus creaminess to it. The Caesar (large) was nice and garlicky and came with a generous side of garlic toast. We had the Ambrosia pizza (think spinach, artichoke hearts feta) and the Athenian pizza (think feta and olives). Both had toppings that blended together in the most amazing way! I would order both again. Service was great - attentive, polite and friendly.
