We were staying in Cabo during a tropical storm and decided to return to Nicksan after our last trip here sometime ago. I have to say it is delightful environment inside and the food was amazing as always, some of the best sushi. Not California gringo sushi which a bunch of non- fresh deep fried fish. The fish was extremely fresh. Some of the freshest I've had and I would say the flavors were more authentic and traditional. I have no I idea why this place would be rated four stars. Unfortunately I came here at a time when I couldn't eat raw seafood. So I had to get their other food, which was not what I really wanted. My husband said the sushi was "great" (and he's a chef, so a bit of a pro). Unfortunately, my chicken teriyaki was only 1/2 good. They used half white meat and half dark meat. The white meat was so dry I couldn't even eat it. The dark meat was great. I encourage the chef to switch to all dark meat and that will make a wonderful dish. The decor was elegant and beautiful. The hostess was extremely attentive and welcoming. The service: they tried. There was a lot of staff but they didn't always get the timing right. Amazing and well worth a visit. I dined as part of a group of 30 and was amazed at the exceptional food but most impressed by the quick, professional and unobtrusive service. Regularly I would notice that my water was refilled quietly and unobtrusively and completed plates were quietly removed and replaced with the next course - the staff allowed me to stay engaged in my conversations without interruption - the focus was on serving me, not questions and conversations with the server, and when I did have a question, the staff was at my side to quietly and professionally answer my question. I came to Nick San in San Lucas and had a wonderful experience, however this Nick San location in San Jose truly lacks. The taste was mediocre , the service delayed, and it was honestly just okay. If I would've known it wasn't going to be the same as the one in San Lucas I would've just stayed in my hotel room and had amazing sushi from "El Nido" inside Viceroy where I'm staying. I've been to several sushi restaurants including high-end ones like NOBU, and the quality has never been as good as it was here. You really taste the freshness of the fish, the presentation is amazing and you leave wanting more! Service was great, lots of attentive waiters. The gyoza was amazing with shrimp and fish, very unique and the soft shell crab was delicious as well. The salmon skin handroll was OK, only 2 pieces of salmon in it, I liked the avocado touch but wish they had more salmon skin in the roll. We also ordered few sushi and decided to go with local fish and it was just OK. I guess the rice was a bit different than what we are used to in California, it tasted the same but the texture was different, it seemed rounder and harder. Pretty place with very gracious hostess welcome. Cocktail, a blackberry marghertia, was fine. Hot tea menu was nice. Miso soup was lukewarm. Main dishes did not come out concurrently, so eating was staggered and awkward. Seabass teriyaki seemed promising, though very late to the table, but was bizarre. Totally smothered in a clawing teriyake sauce which overwhelmed the dish and one could not even discern it was fish at all. Pasta side was not inviting, didn't try it, seemed incongruous to a Japanese entreee. Young, well meaning waiter was no where to be found. Ordered bottled water, but the bottle was never put on our table and we only had 2.5 glasses so that was a mystery. read more

Portions here were very large. We ate everything above between my husband and I and we were very very full. The lobster dish could easily be shared between 2 people. Sushi was not all that for what they are charging and the service was very lacking after sitting for 20 minutes I had to call someone over to finally take our drink order and then had to call someone back to take our food order. One of our worst restaurant experiences in Cabo. The sushi is so thick with rice you have to deconstruct it before even attempting to eat it. Plus they use imitation crab. The spicy fish dish was not spicy at all, and tasted frozen. Service was mediocre and ambiance non existent. My wife had chicken teriyaki and said it tasted worse than frozen alternatives. Additionally the entrees were supposed to be accompanied by rice (more) and came with cold noodles and cold green veggies. They called a taxi that never arrived when we left. I called a new one which showed up in 5 minutes. I will assume the taxi service failed but it didn't feel like that was the case. Maybe the main restaurant in Los Cabos is better...one can only hope. read more

Nick San at The Palmilla Shops started off very strong. Food was excellent. Loved the gyoza stuffed with seafood. And the sashimi serranito. And the dynamite scallops. But the service was way off. We got a Lime Maguro roll even though we had not ordered it - we had just asked the waiter to describe it. They didn't even put in our friends' special eel roll order. Forgot their Tekka Don. Then they ghosted us. We literally were walking out the front door towards our Uber when they ran out with our check. I'll try it one more time to see if it was just an off night. read more
