This doctor does second opinion medical reviews for Government. He lied to me and said he believed I could only work very light duty or not at all. He then turns around and writes totally different report. They call these doctors second opinion but these doctors work for medical referrals business that get most of their business from Government. It would be interesting to see how many cases that he exams and gives report in favor of patient. Congress needs to investigate these referral companies and the doctors they contract. read more

The office staff is RUDE especially Quran. They don't return calls or emails. Would not recommend this office to anyone. BEWARE!!!

Avoid this office. The staff are unbelievably disorganized and unpleasant. I dealt with them for 2 months to try to get an extremely common procedure. The scheduling process took 6 weeks, my numerous phone calls were NEVER returned (despite leaving voicemails and messages with staff members), and incorrect and incomplete information was provided to me, leaving me to have multiple issues with insurance and scheduling. When my surgery was finally scheduled, it was canceled without informing me 2 days prior to the procedure. Anything wrong that the staff could have done, they did. I ended up seeing another nearby surgeon and had my surgery scheduled and performed within 4 days of my first call to them for an appointment. read more

Dr. Nicola is currently treating me for left knee pain out of the DISC center in Marina del Rey. He has assumed the practice of the late, great L.A. Clippers orthopedic surgeon, Anthony F. Daly Jr., from whom I was fortunate enough to receive a flawless left shoulder repair four years ago. After two appointments, Dr. Nicola has impressed me with his prompt service and minimal wait time. He also appears to take an aggressive course in treating problems such as mine; it would have taken me three appointments with my rheumatologist, due to office foulups, just to review X rays of that knee before I decided to visit DISC. Which brings up the subject of office administrators. Dr. Daly's right-hand woman, Lee Beran, has joined Dr. Nicola and she is the most capable and professional aide I have ever encountered in a doctor's office. With her on your side, the office visit is a breeze. Another star to come when I don't need a pinch runner any longer. read more

Roland C. has got it right. This is hands down the worst doctor's office I have ever encountered. Impossible to get a return phone call, and they make no apologies for not calling you back when you complain. They also ignore voice mails. The waiting room is always packed, with high-volume reality shows on the TV to make you feel all zen before your appointment. I saw Dr. Nicola for knee surgery. He seemed competent, has great credentials, but I always felt rushed. After the surgery,I had an allergic reaction to the pain medication and it took the office 4 days to return my call for an alternative prescription. I made do with Advil. Nice! I returned to the office post-surgery and told Dr. Nicola I was still experiencing quite a bit of pain, and was concerned. I was basically pooh-poohed, cleared to go back to work and all regular activities, and sent on my way. Luckily for me, my wonderful physical therapist believed me, thought something was not right since the pain was so bad I was limping and couldn't sleep at night, and insisted I get a second opinion, no matter what Dr. Nicola thought.. Guess what? The new doctor found 2 tears in the same knee that was "fixed." I have no idea if a tear was missed, not repaired properly, or tore in PT, but one thing I can tell you, is that I will NOT be going back to this office for the second surgery. I would have called them to let them know, but I doubt anyone would care. read more

The radiology guy, Dave, who I have seen several times is a total pro. Also, Quran could not have been more helpful in setting up my visit and taking care of me when I was there. DR. NICOLA IS EXCELLENT! I wanted to say this upfront to make sure that the doc gets his due. Now that that's out of the way I can begin with the explanation of the 2 stars. The office sucks donkey bullocks. 1) Firstly, there is no parking validation, which (in Beverly Hills) is equivalent to someone stealing your lunch money. 2) The office is packed with obviously unhappy and frustrated people waiting for their turn. We tried to check in but were blocked by a patient who was complaining that she did not receive a reminder call for her appointment and missed it by accident (she came a day later than she was supposed to). Unfortunately, the lady was getting no sympathy from the staff and no options to address the situation (like seeing if another doc can see her, reschedule the appt, do a virtual call, etc). The place feels like a coin laundromat, a space reserved for single lost socks and faceless machines that spin and spin while going nowhere until they break down . The staff for check in and check out could be replaced by a washer and dryer. The rest of the occupants are the socks. 3) I guess this is true of all doctors and dentists and anyone else in the medical profession but the appointment time is never correct. You get there and then wait 30 mins to actually begin your appointment. Depending on how you feel about Jerry Springer and his show, the wait can fly by or make you feel like you're a political prisoner who has been jailed for being literate. 4) The lab tech (I will call him "Igor: since no one there introduced themselves or wore a name tag except the good Doc) is just plain rude. He kicked me out of the room when I just wanted to make sure my wife was comfortable and didn't have any language barrier issues since she's a non-native speaker. 5) We filled out several forms asking the same questions about the injury and then some guy in the lab coat comes in and interrogates us about the same thing we just wrote 3 times on the forms next to him. Again he doesn't introduce himself or say what his role is (I named him "Friday"). After Friday left with his version of the papers (I think the medical industry and the paper industry are in cahoots), Dr. Nicola came in, greeted us with smiles and a handshake, introduced himself, and started the exam. He gave her a thorough exam looked over the x-rays, answered our questions and told us that there was nothing serious and that she just needed to take it easy and do some pain management and conditioning. I felt he was very professional, amiable, was the kind of doc who cares about his patient and knew exactly what he was talking about. He exudes confidence, knowledge and a genuine feeling that all care providers should. After the exam, he bid us farewell, and we left back to the horrors of the waiting room where they had misplaced our paperwork. I just paid the copay and fled. I don't know if he owns the place or if it's a collective like the Borg or the other doctors own it and the staff are indentured or whatever. I just think Dr. Nicola was awesome and it's a shame the office environment is modeled after Kafka novels. I think I would go back there if only because we started with him and we like him. But I can't say for sure, the place was really depressing and annoying, kinda like the DMV or maybe a DMZ. read more

My experience with Dr. Nicola's office and staff was not the best unfortunately. He came highly recommended by my legal counsel for an occupational injury and the first few initial visits were productive. However when it came to the office making any referrals for additional treatment, they didn't seem to know which ones were within their network and compatible with my insurance, which then caused a bit of a frenzy between the Dr. office staff and my legal counsel and insurance provider. The whole misunderstanding took the Dr.'s staff several weeks sort out and make a proper selection. Getting to that point was a long drawn out production where a lot of calling back and forth, making sure the Dr.'s office staff was communicating as needed and on one accord with the necessary parties. ((Headache)) (Side Bar: Dr. Nicola's office screens calls, which caused several of my calls and inquiries to go unanswered or returned. I found that when I blocked my number when calling, my call would be answered right away). The office also creates fees and takes money for services not provided. Highly unprofessional, and very crooked. Some staff members there were also particularly unpleasant and distasteful. One I recall having been extremely rude, and easily frustrated...the other just outright neck rolling, finger snapping ghetto. I use this extreme because the Dr.'s staff made a threat to contact my insurance provider and tell them I no longer wished to remain with their office once I expressed my unhappiness with the offices lack of follow through. Isn't that my decision to make first?? Overall this Dr.'s office comes with a bit too much Hollywood ego with regard to patient care, and Mobster like qualities with regard to the billing aspect for my taste. Horrid staff, impersonal treatment and no follow through. I also wondered if having photos of oneself posing next to sports figures and professional athletes might guarantee or even improve my own quality of treatment in any way. Turns out it did not, but I suppose when you're "big time", you'll want all of your patients to know. This was my experience and I've chosen to have my health care needs met elsewhere. Dr. Nicola is the best Orthopedist I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! He is extremely knowledgable, experienced, and so friendly! Dr. Nicola and his staff make you feel welcomed and secure! ACL replacements are really difficult to recover from but I was able to continue to play soccer and keep up with my work out regime without any pain. His recommendations were tailored specifically based on my injury and lifestyle and having a doctor that takes that much time and consideration when treating you is something you don't find often! Dr. Nicola was highly recommended to me, I even drove from the Valley to get there (aprox. 1 hour each way w/o traffic). After each visit I found myself asking "why do I continue to come back here" as apposed to "wow that was an amazing experience." To add some color to this picture I'll briefly explain my experience. Dr. Nicola is the best out there, until you meet him and realize he has little to no time to listen and work with you. His staff is very aggressive and they don't like to be asked questions or challenged, so be prepared for that. I had a AC grade 2 separation in my left shoulder and Dr. Nicola would come in for about 5 minutes tops and look at your injury ask you how you're feeling and go on his marry way. To be honest, I would have no problem with that, except for the fact that when he tells you his diagnosis in person it doesn't mean the notes on his reports will reflect that. You see he waits a few weeks to have his staff document his patients notes and as a result they will often be vague and require tons of follow up if you're working with insurance or disability. I even found myself acting as an intermediary during my injury between Dr. Nicola's staff and the EDD. Normally I'd say you get what you pay for, but he's "one of the top" so expect to pay top dollar. read more

I was in excruciating pain when I tore my ACL, thinking that I would never be able to run again, when my colleague referred me. I am really selective when it comes to doctors but I'm so glad I listened. Not only did Dr. Nicola have amazing bedside manner and sensitivity - he listened and knew exactly what happened right away. Dr. Nicola is a miracle worker!! I have had terrible knee pain since I started cycling and running long distances and finally decided to go to a specialist to have it taken care of. Dr. Nicola was able to diagnose me and was able to put me in a brace ASAP and I am now able to go about my activities and continue to workout. I went to Dr. Nicola because he came highly recommended from a couple of friends and my physical therapist. I was able to make an appointment within the week, the staff was very friendly, and they accept my insurance! I am not sure what these other people are talking about. I LOVED Dr. Nicola AND his staff. I was seen in the Marina Del Ray office. The girls were awesome and funny and made me feel at ease. The Dr. spent much time discussing my lifestyle, the injury, what the future held etc. I never felt rushed and always felt that he and his girls cared about me and my pain. I'll keep it short and to the point. In my opinion this organization was totally unprofessional, inconsiderate, and virtually incompetent. The left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. It became a tragedy of errors on their part, and I suffered the consequences. It was a terrible experience, and this being a medical facility, I felt compelled to write my first negative review. I can only hope that in doing so this helps someone else who's facing an important medical decision. I realize I'm not getting into specifics, I don't want to waste any more of my time coping with this ordeal and details can be subjective anyway. One's experience is unique however, and this brief summary is my closure on this most unfortunate experience. HORRIBLE OFFICE STAFF!!!!!!!! First I'd like to make clear that I never had the opportunity to see Dr. Nicola, because the office staff was so horrible I never even had the chance to get an appointment. All the bad reviews here are 100% accurate when it comes to the office staff!!!! After reading the reviews I thought I'd give the office staff the benefit of the doubt because the doctor seems to be a good one. However when I called to make an appointment for my fiancé I was told that I needed to fax in or email his medical card first with contact information and they would contact me back. I did, and followed up immediately to ensure they received it. They did and said they would call me back. After an hour I followed up again and was told once more that they were checking his benefits and would contact me back. After 2 and a half hours passed I called back again and the response I received was "didn't you just call about that?" I responded "yes an hour and a half ago and am still waiting for a response." The woman treated me like I was an inconvenience and told me they were checking and they would call me as soon as they had verified his coverage. Four hours later and still no call back!!!!!!! I ended up finding The Joint and Spine Institute in Beverly Hills, whom has wonderful friendly staff who was able to tell me within 5 minutes that my fiancé's medical coverage was accepted and booked an appointment immediately. I don't understand why Dr. Nicola's office staff can't book an appointment efficiently, has no sense of urgency, courtesy or customer service. I feel sorry for his patients who have to deal with this level of inconsideration and unprofessionalism. You are in the medical field and are supposed to HELP people not make their situations more stressful!!! I can't thank Dr. Nicola enough!! As a lifelong basketball player, I was devastated when I tore my ACL playing with some friends last summer. I was referred to Dr. Nicola by a friend who previously had a very successful ACL reconstruction surgery done by him. With a possible torn muscle in my rotator cuff I was referred by my physician (simply because of location) to see Dr. Nicola. I have been attempting to make an appt with this man for the past 4 days. It seems it would be easier and more welcoming to secure a time w/ Obama at the White House. I have left 3 messages just to make an appt. No one calls me back. Finally I called again today and actually got a human on the phone (I think she was human) Her name was Jennifer. Jennifer would not allow me to schedule an appt without a copy of my Dr's referral in her hand (although it was in MY hand) My Dr's office faxed over a copy...and although they had receipt that it went thru multiple times, Jennifer still claimed she didn't have it. My Dr's asst pleaded with Jennifer, "PLEASE let this woman just make an appt, she is in tremendous pain & we are vouching for her!!" (we had a conference call so I heard the entire exchange) Jennifer could not have been more apathetic, rude & uncooperative...she just kept repeating "sorry its Drs policy"... I'm done. its time for me to get a different referral. I'm sure if I were on the Clippers I'd have no problem getting in to see the Doc :( read more
