I took my Expedition for Lean Fuel (PO171). Neil found many tubes for the vacuum were dissolved and cracked due to my car being 26+ years old. Ignore all the fake family and friend reviews. This guy is the LEAST trust worthy mechanic in Southern California and maybe the United States. I took my truck in to remove some part. He told me the part wasn't there. I know it was BECAUSE I PUT IT THERE. I was being nice sure thanks for looking. All the sudden something was wrong with the radiator. This idiot didn't realize my truck was under bumper to bumper warranty. The dealership fixed his scam free of charge. Neil's automotive broke / replaced a good part with a bad one. This guy wakes up in the morning thinking he's smart, but can't pass 7th grade algebra that's why he's a mechanic. Stay far far far far away from this shop. It's hard to find a good mechanic. Highly recommend Niels. He fixed my bumper after I absent mindedly went in Drive instead of Reverse in the Vons parking lot and seriously f*cked the front end of my car on one of their little islands. I took it in on a Thursday evening, he had the necessary parts ordered and I picked up on Friday late afternoon. Very, very reasonable prices and fast service and great communication. I need to start this review with a few words about the COMPETITOR (Chris Auto whatever) across the parking lot from Niel. I brought my car there initially with warning lights on the dashboard, knowing that a diagnostic would only take 5 minutes. The proprietor was rude, sarcastic, and immediately tried to tell me the lights indicated a failing hybrid battery. I had already researched the problem online and knew there could be several reasons for these lights. The electronic diagnostic tool that all of these places use only takes 5 minutes to reveal the issue, and I asked if he would mind just doing this quick test so I knew what I was dealing with. His response? "Sure, I'll just call up all these customers and tell them their appointments are trash and move you to the front!" [[HIGHLIGHT]]I left this a$$hole snickering, and drove literally across the parking lot to where Niel also had a full garage of customers. The difference was, he understood common courtesy and had no problem immediately plugging in the tool and letting me know, "it's the inverter pump."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not a big deal repair. He tried to gaslight me on quote and pricing. Here's the facts... I needed brake service six months ago to fix a squeal that was driving me crazy. Neil quoted $600 to replace pads and rotors - we had a detailed conversation about it. Dealer quoted $850. I took my car to Neil and he said the pads were fine and suggested that we just machine the rotors instead for $280 - I have the receipt. Now six months later, my brakes are squealing again and I just wanted to replace pads and rotors. So, I tried to go back to Neil and asked if he could honor the original $600 quote for the new work. He said it would be over $900 now. When I was surprised by the increase, he said I was wrong about the original quote and claimed that I just misunderstood. Um, again, we had a very detailed conversation about it that I remember very clearly. So, I called Midas.... guess what? They quoted $600 for pads and rotors just like Neil's original quote. Where do you think I took my car? (hint, not Neil) I'm giving Neil 1 star here NOT because he increased his price by 150% (people can charge whatever they want, although that might mean I don't buy). The problem is the gaslighting about the original quote. That is exactly the kind of thing that a bad repair shop does - increase the price AND THEN gaslight you about it. BTW, the guy at Midas was like an encyclopedia on brakes. He new exactly what was causing the squeal and offered me a quick education on everything related to my brakes... common specs, pad materials, history of various products, etc. In the end, we opted to just swap out my pads (even though they were still technically fine) with some higher-quality pads and then machine the rotors again (because there was still plenty of life in them, which he explained using concrete facts - numbers). I spent significantly less than the quoted $600... again. Fingers crossed that the brake squeal is fixed this time. read more

He looked at the car and was able to tell me exactly whats wrong with it, which was the water pump. They guys did a great job finding and installing the parts necessary (not easy to find parts for these cars ). I went to Niels about three weeks ago to have my new truck inspected. I showed up the first day after calling and scheduling an appointment but somewhere along the line there must have been a mix up. He told me to come back tomorrow instead to have it checked out. The next day his mechanics gave a brief lookover on it and told me it needed a drag link and new steering linkage. I had been planning on selling the truck beforehand and I listed it for sale with the reassurance of his diagnosis. I posted the truck for sale at a generous price because it needed a little work and couple weeks later a buyer came to test drive it. He was happy with the truck and willing to fix it up but he wanted to have a mechanic inspect it for himself. He suggested to take it to "a mechanic down the road," which was none other than Niel's automotive! We drove back to the shop to have it inspected so the buyer could have the same confidence in the truck as I had but when we arrived Niel just took a look at me and laughed. He said he didn't want to inspect a truck he had already taken a look at. After an uncomfortable 30-45 minute wait he reluctantly put the truck back on the rack for the buyer's sake. This time when his mechanics were through looking at my truck he claimed my truck had frame damage, it needed a whole new front end, and the brakes were about to go out. He made me out to be a liar and gave my buyer the impression that my clean title truck had been in an unreported accident! I was utterly humiliated and on the verge of tears. The buyer however, was a soldier in the Navy and believed what I said about having been to Niel's before and said he'd buy my truck whether or not the frame was damaged. We drove down to a body shop that specializes in frame correction and once they took a quick look around they said my truck is fine! I didn't know what to think anymore! I just let the buyer pick a price and take the truck. I had been wanting to get a dirtbike for weeks and I didn't care anymore. The next day I got a text from the buyer saying the suspension is actually fine and it just needed a little front end work with the drag link and some bushings. My experience at Niel's was utterly humiliating and I'm out a couple thousand dollars that I could have had if I hadn't taken my truck to here. read more
