My car was parked in their parking area and another car hit my car and they have denied any responsibility. After they said they would take care of it. They have a new owner that has taken over Star and California tire. They are denying anything that happened before the sell. I will never go back and since California tire is associated with them I'd never go to them either. Schlocky management and nothing is ever their fault. Don't go there. read more

I have been a customer at this shop since the 1990's but am now moving on. Walt and his service managers were always knowledgeable and competent but now this business has a whole new vibe. There have been a lot of changes now with a lot of turn over and expansion, branching out and no longer Japanese car exclusive. Now that Walt has stepped back from being there, I have had two less than satisfactory experiences and am very disappointed that this business is not what it used to be. read more

I've used this shop since 2018. Quality has severely deteriorated as owner stepped back. They use low quality aftermarket parts and at least one not very skilled mechanic. Last visit resulted in 4 comebacks without correction. I do not recommend any longer. read more

I went here to do a pre-purchase check on a car I was considering buying. WOW!! Walt and his team checked the car in its entirety for about 30 minutes and found everything that was wrong with it and could possibly be wrong with it, gave us fair pricing, and even told us his recommendation on buying it (all for only $90, instead of wasting $4200 on repairs after buying a car for $6000). They also checked the value of the car and took that into consideration, which was amazing because I was able to hear professional opinions on a car I was considering purchasing. With in ten minutes of my car being at automotive they fully diagnosed my problem and gave me a great deal on it as well they fixed it with in an hour and car runs great now !! After 2.5 hours of exploratory surgery, they called to say they could not find the cause of the ticking sound that the car was brought in for, which was discussed prior. This is not acceptable and they failed to justify their absurd $125/hr. labor charge. They also said that they estimated their labor would likely skyrocket to $900+ with no assurance they'd actually succeed in finding the problem. Five star reviews on this place are plentiful; if you just need basic maintenance. But in this case, they fleeced us and lined their pockets with our money. Star Automotive is a great place! We are lucky to have them in Newbury Park. I thought I would never again be able to use the words "honest mechanics" but now I can! They are very professional and thorough. I had taken my car to the dealer, had to leave it all day for minor service, and was overcharged for a lot of things that weren't needed. My repair at Star Automotive was done promptly. They evaluated my car but only did what was needed. STAR doesn't know the difference between a tire and a windshield wiper. Was told my 02 tundra had a blown gasket with a 2400 price tag because it wouldn't pass smog the first time. Turns out my truck could pass smog fine and had nothing wrong. Luckily I took it to get a second opinion before I shelled out for unnecessary repairs. Watch for scams! read more

I was looking for a mechanic to take my Subaru to due to our T.O. dealer closed/moved/downsized. I went to Star based on another Yelp review. I was not disappointed. They treat all of their customers with courtesy and fairness. Prices are more than fair and they are thorough in checking out my cars. I now take both my 210,000 mile Honda and my 65,000 Subaru to them. Although they say Toyota and Lexus, they know Hondas and Subies as well. BEWARE OF SCAMS AND OVERCHARGING.....AND BAIT AND SWITCH POLICIES BY THE OWNER, WALTER MOORHEAD. I have five older vehicles..... having so many repairs to do.....I can't afford to overpay or be taken advantage of by any repair place when it comes time to fix something like a BLINKING AIRBAG LIGHT on a Japanese engineered car. Similar to transmission repairs when some repair shops sock it to you to buy a COMPLETELY NEW TRANSMISSION...when all you need is a selenoid or torque converter....WITH AIRBAGS THERE ARE QUITE A FEW EXPENSIVE PARTS.....like sensors...and many other parts that can go wrong causing the red airbag light to show up on your dash. It's not easy to know WHICH OF THE MANY AIRBAG PARTS NEEDS REPLACING...and those parts are list price...... VERY EXPENSIVE...in the realm of $700 for each part and even higher. On line you can find the same original equipment new parts for 30% to 50% less...THERE IS A HUGE MARKUP ON OEM TOYOTA AIRBAG PARTS. MANY REPAIR SHOPS HAVE A SIGN UP IN THE OFFICE: "CUSTOMERS PARTS NOT PERMITTED". THIS STAR SHOP IS ONE OF THOSE...."CUSTOMERS PARTS NOT PERMITTED". When you see the above notice...you can KNOW FOR SURE...THAT THE OWNER OF THE SHOP WANTS TO MAKE A BIG PROFIT BY SELLING YOU A PART THAT YOU COULD BUY YOURSELF ON AMAZON OR EBAY FOR PERHAPS HALF PRICE...AND YOU THEN PAY THE SHOP ONLY FOR THE LABOR TO INSTALL THE PART...thus saving YOU TONS OF CASH! But with the shops who don't allow you to buy your own parts at reasonable prices........THEY MAKE BIG PROFIT ON THE PARTS YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BUY FROM THE SHOP AT FULL LIST PRICE. I guess if you have ONE car to repair...it may or may not matter much to you if you are overcharged........but for me.....with FIVE CARS..... I can't afford to give BIG PARTS PROFITS to repair shop owners! My belief is that the shop owners should make their profit from the hefty LABOR CHARGE...now about $125 per hour....and then if the customer wants..... let the customer buy the parts at the least expensive web site. So I go into this Star Auto Repair Shop to ask for a "diagnosis of a flashing red airbag light on my dash." "Sure, we can diagnose and fix that...our diagnosis fee is $65".... and you can see on a blackboard: "Diagnosis $65".....and on my paperwork there is the notation "Diagnosis $65". So that's a good deal so I agree...and leave the car with Walter Moorehead who is the owner. The next day I got a phone call from Walter...."this diagnosis is taking over 2 hours so I am charging you for two hours labor at $250" Walter informs me. I don't want to argue and wast my $65 and time...so I don't argue..."Oh" is all I can say thinking that I'll argue when I pick up the car. So today I picked up the car...and the receipt still has $65 on it...and he says..."The bill is $250." or thereabouts. Well, it occurs to me that I have been made a victim of "bait and switch"...where the price is LOW TO GET YOU INTO THE SHOP TRANSACTION...BUT THEN AFTER AGREEING....THE SELLER RAISES THE PRICE ON YOU WITH SOME EXCUSE LIKE...."The diagnosis took over two hours"... wouldn't the owner of the shop KNOW how long the diagnosis would take and that's why he AGREED to $65 for the diagnosis...........and/or he might be reasonable enough to stick to the $65 agreed upon originally.....? But no...now I am "into Walter" for $250....is that fair? Be "fair" to Walter?....but perhaps you don't want or can't afford to have your bill "raised"...unless you're a wealthy person which I am not! So we're at the shop Walter and I...I'm there to pick up the keys and to pay the $65....so WALTER DEMANDS TO BE PAID FOR THE LABOR THAT HE SAYS WAS 2 HOURS...when the diagnosis could be done in about a half an hour probably. So I look at the PRINTED PAPER WITH $65 ON IT...and tell Walter I don't think $250 is fair....WALTER BECOME EXTREMELY IRATE...HIS FACE TURNS RED...HE ORDERS ME OUT OF THE SHOP CALLING ME A "CRIMINAL" OR SOME SUCH INSULT. WALTER THEN COMES UP TO ME , I STEP OUTSIDE THE OFFICE...HE FOLLOWS ME AND PUTS HIS HANDS AROUND MY NECK SAYING...."I AM STRONGER THAN YOU AND I KNOW JUDO SO DON'T TRY TO FIGHT BACK"...or words to that effect. FINALLY I BREAK LOOSE FROM HIS CHOKE HOLD AND RUN AWAY. Part of the above was seen by MATT of the California Tire Company across the mall. The above really occured along with the "bait and switch" and the high labor charges that he will also charge you....so if you go into this shop my suggestion is MAKE IT CLEAR THAT YOU DON'T WANT BAIT AND SWITCH AND YOU WANT FAIR PRICES FOR PARTS...NOT SOME INFLATED PRICE when you could buy the same part online for half the price. UP TO YOU....GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE....NO PROBLEM. I DON'T HATE WALTER AS I'M SURE HE HATES ME....SO MAYBE GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE??? UP TO YOU...:o) PS: I just got my airbag light turned off by Rod at AIRBAG TECH in Sylmar for $195 plus the airbag sensor I bought on line for HALF PRICE. You can find him on Yelp. read more

The most difficult thing about buying my new Mini Cooper, was knowing that Ray at Star would not be there to help me out when it came time for repairs. I had a 2001 Toyota Camry that has been serviced by Star Automotive for the past 7 years. They are professional, do thorough, expert work, are reasonably priced and, most importantly, their honesty is beyond reproach. Finding a reliable auto service shop is always so challenging. Once you've gone to Star, you can stop looking. Just wish they would branch out and service different types of cars! read more

This place used to be great to take your car to... When Ray was the one handling the office he was always upfront and honest. That sadly is a thing of the past. Ray is no longer there and the person who now handles the office either has a lack of honesty and integrity or his mechanics lie about the work that really needs to be done on a car. A while back when I took my vehicle in to him for a check engine light he told me that I had a Blown Head Gasket. It did not make sense to me... There did not appear to be anything wrong with my car, no loss of power, it still ran like a champ, just the check engine light. He swore up and down that some times it happens like that and they had performed the chemical test and indeed there was water in the block... And it was going to be $3400.00 to fix it. Inside it just didn't feel right so I took it to another mechanic that I used to use before they became too busy. Because at that point you best be getting a second opinion especially when the car is still running great. After the other mechanic did the chemical tests and diagnostics they found that there was NOT water in the block and my car simply needed a valve adjustment. Now I understand human error and misdiagnosing... But when you tell me that you did a chemical test and that test shows there is water in the block and the other mechanic tells me they did the same test and there is no water in the block, something isn't right in the land. I would just advise to get a 2nd opinion if you are told that the service you need doesn't make sense and if it costs a lot. read more
