    October 2024 Bakery Box!
    Bill D.

Night Moves Bakery was in Biddeford and we were crushed when they closed, but then overjoyed when they reopened in South Portland. Their location is right as you come over the bridge from Portland, do it's really convenient. It's a great little space. They do these subscription boxes, which we decided to try this month. See the pic below for what's in this box. Their bread is amazing! So tasty and fresh! They use sustainably grown grains from local farmers. The anadama grains are from a Somali Bantu Community Farm! The staff is always super kind and helpful. Definitely make it a stop when in the Portland area!

I went to Night Moves not long after they opened in South Portland to pickup some bread and pastries. I tried the country loaf and some shortbread that I believe was lemon rosemary flavored. Both were delicious. The bread is sourdough so you have to be into that but it was delicious on its own with simply butter and it also made excellent bread for BLTs. The shortbread was delightfully short and flavored lightly. Almost perfect. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of those products :( What I DO have pics of, however, are their pizza and cookies!! The cookies are a menu mainstay and have a reputation for being some of the best in the area. I think I have to agree. They are just thick enough to be indulgent without being overpowering. They aren't super sweet and the little sprinkling of salt on top is an excellent finish. The pizza is NOT a regular menu item but maybe it will be going forward because they do a heck of a job. The product was lights-out good. The sauce is incredible. I would love to know their recipe for the sauce. It was nice and tangy with a bit of sweetness. So good. The dough is naturally leavened so you have to be a fan of that. The pizza had a bit of char on the crust, which I love. Really great all around. Unfortunately, with it being their second ever pizza night, there were some hiccups. I had ordered for pickup at 6pm and I figured that it would be busy and I may have to wait. I did not, however, expect to have to wait until 6:35pm to have the pizzas in my hand. I absolutely do NOT blame the employees working there because they were doing a great job of trying to coordinate things and get the orders out. I think the issue lies with the ordering system. Clearly there were too many people who ordered pickup for the 6-7pm window so if that could have been addressed somehow when people were making their orders, it definitely would have made it easier for the employees to manage. But really I can't stress enough that the two employees working the front room and the pizza person who I couldn't see were doing a great job with the situation they were in. Parking is a bit tight. If you can walk down there, I would recommend it. I will be back!!

Excellent quality, super delicious. I tried the sourdough granola, and "everyday" boule and a yummy zucchini coffee bread.

Though I love her food, I can' t have it every day, so the sauces are like taking this restaurant home with me. Flor makes the best mole, (pronounced mow-lay) anywhere in Maine. It's a word which comes from the Aztec word Mulli. The most famous Moles come from Puebla and Oaxaca. They take days to make and have many ingredients. The Mole Poblano is said to have originated in a nunnery where anxious nuns wanted to prepare something special for a visit by the bishop and each nun contributed an ingredient. Most nunneries had at least 20 nuns, so the list of ingredients is long! It is safe to say that there are usually herbs and spices, peanuts, bitter chocolate, and various chilis. But each cook has her own special version and it's a closely guarded family secret. Flor and her family are from Puebla and her recipe for mole Poblano has been handed down from mother to daughter for generations. It is a rich complicated sauce with many flavors that change as they cross your tongue. The turkey or chicken are almost inconsequential. When I first tasted it, I swore I could almost taste the earthenware it was first stirred into. Flor is very careful to make sure the chili doesn't overwhelm the sauce and leaves room to taste all her ingredients, the herbs, the spices, the nuts and yes, a little sweetness. This sauce is so good I would eat it even if it was poured over an old shoe! But seriously, it is wonderful over chicken enchiladas or just plain turkey.

After having some of the bread prior to our meals at a few restaurants, we found out the bread is locally sourced at a sister business right around the corner from where ate the night before. There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find!

There is a silver lining though, they will still be operating their Forest Ave pickup location and you'll still find their pastries at many other local establishments. To ensure we did not miss out on anything we arrived right at opening. A line already formed but once we located parking we jumped in. Despite the small space the three workers had such a great system going for keeping the line moving! Despite the line of everyone getting their Belleville fix they had everything in stock and about 9 different pastry options. Since it was our first visit we wanted to get a variety of pastries to try a few. Seeing so much positive talk about their croissants we needed a classic version of that, a Pain au Chocolat, Morning Bun, and lastly a Palmier (they describe it as a caramelized puff pastry cookie). Drink wise my wife got an iced lavender latte and I got an iced chai latte. Drinks were good and all the pastries were phenomenal. My wife has found a new favorite pastry with the palmier. Sad to have this great bakery shutting its doors but I will be seeking out their baked goods at the other location!

The cardamom bun was delicious - it was light, slightly sweet, the cardamom flavor was not overpowering and the brioche was perfectly moist. If you enjoy that flavor profile, don't hesitate to grab one of these! Coffee was also great - simply a drip coffee but they are using a medium-dark roast from tandem coffee roasters that will be a general crowd pleaser. Just be aware they don't have all of the pastry options every day, I went looking for a kouign amann but the cardamom bun I had didn't disappoint, so next time I'm here I'll have to catch 'em.
