Since 1950's The strawberry cake donut was my favorite by far. Excellent flavor, great texture, and worth going out of your way for. The blueberry cake was excellent too, and the sugar-raised met my admittedly particular donut standards. My only critique? These donuts are huge. Almost unnecessarily huge. I'd actually prefer them a little smaller, which is not something I normally say about donuts. But despite their size, they're surprisingly light and airy. I walked away not feeling overly full, but somehow still thinking, "I could eat one more." That feels like the correct outcome. We found this while driving to see the Portland Head Light and wanted to stop in and see what they had to get for later on in the day. I purchased several flavors of donut holes and they were all delicious. By far the best ones we had while in town. I purchased the chocolate coconut, powdered chocolate, strawberry and cinnamon sugar flavors. My favorite was the coconut but they were all stellar and fresh with a great moist texture. Staff were sweet and helpful and happy to answer questions and take care of me. They had a range of cookies, brownies, and other baked goods that all looked delicious as well as some coffee and tea. read more

The best donuts in the area by far! Stopped in without planning to just because I happened to be passing by, the selection was still great for it being a Saturday afternoon. Staff was so kind and brought a treat out for my dog while I waited for my sister to order some donuts for us. The shop was perfect and the donuts were INCREDIBLE. So moist and flavorful. I can't wait to come back some other time without my dog so that I can check out all of the offerings and try many more things! I tried 5-6 different donut flavors all of which were great. The Boston creme, is hefty to the point if I try to hold it in one hand with your fingers in the middle, it will droop on the sides. What an achievement. An array of donut flavors that makes it difficult to choose what you'd like (in a positive way). Pro tip for parents with little ones: the frosted sprinkled donuts on are the top of the glass counter. Whether you choose to notify your child of the location of said donut is your prerogative. Of note: would be great if one day they could put a flavor sign next to the correlating donut. Service is friendly and quick. Coffee is pour your own with rotating flavors, usually local selections. Don't miss the day-old pastry items (can vouch that the cinnamon rolls hold up) at half price and the display of local provisions on the center table. Cute, local spot. They also have a senior day plus they have a mark down rack every day which is nice . Once you go here you will never stop . I think my family has tried everything they make and it was all fantastic. What a find! Nice old-school style bakery. Reasonable prices. Lots of good stuff to choose from - cookies (duh!); brownies; fruit squares; cinnamon buns; eclairs.....but the star of the show? Their DONUTS! OMG! So tasty and waaaay superior to the overly-hyped holy donuts IMO. The glazed donut, my fav, is large, supple and totally covered in a yummy glaze. On a day trip to Portland, one of our main goals was donut acquisition. We've heard tell that Portland has many good donut shops, but we could only try one. We settled on The Cookie Jar, as sadly there are only so many donuts one can eat in a single road trip. We were not disappointed. The people were super friendly in helping us navigate the massive piles of donuts on the shelves. We settled on chocolate glazed and chocolate coconut. I couldn't quite bring myself to try the molasses donut, as it was not a sure thing. The lady behind the counter recommended a donut hole version so we could try it. Sold. The chocolate and coco-choco were excellent donuts. - Dense, with the exact right amount of glaze. - Sweet, but not too sweet. - The size and weight of your friggin head Check, check, and check. They were far better than the average donut, and really reminded us of donuts from when we were kids. The molasses donut hole on the other hand was above and beyond. I absolutely loved it. If I had not just consumed my body weight in donut, I would have gone back in just to get another. Not to be missed. If you're in the market for donuts or other baked sweets, this is a great place just outside of town. It's easy to get in and out of, with on site parking which is a huge bonus compared to some of the others. Several times I went later in the afternoon on busy summer days, and when I found what I like to pick up there was sold out, they've run out back and brought out a fresh batch. Chocolate Frosted Glazed yeast donut topped again with chocolate icing. The chocolate icing on this one tasted really off--different than the frosting on the Boston Cream. What a hidden gem. I read on Reddit about this place that compared donuts from Holy Donut, Tony's, and somewhere else I can't remember. There was a comment that was "you're all wrong, it's Cookie Jar" and a bunch of locals comically replied "shut up! don't let the tourists find out and make the place slammed and impossible to order from!" As a tourist who did try Holy Donut, then stumbled upon Cookie Jar during my drive to Cape Elizabeth, oh my god. Cookie Jar has THE BEST donuts I've ever had in my entire life. The boston creme donut was amazing, but the donut that was lifechanging is the blueberry! Also fun that this place also shares a name with a place in my favorite Hallmark Christmas movie. The glaze donuts were so thick with the perfect amount of melt in your mouth sweetness. The sugar cookies held the perfect softness, the chocolate chip cookies were absolutely perfect.
