How does one spend over $100 at a bakery - come to Standard and you'll find out! And it was absolutely worth the wait in the rain on a Sunday morning. After having some of the bread prior to our meals at a few restaurants, we found out the bread is locally sourced at a sister business right around the corner from where ate the night before. There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find! read more

This is a cool bakery located downtown Portland. They have a pretty large parking lot, it was busy but I found a spot. It's free for the first 30 minutes. The inside the bakery is super tiny for customers, more of a grab and go. It did look like they had some kind of seating upstairs, but I didn't see how you access that ... I was only there for a couple of minutes. Maybe that's for a different time of the day. Everything there was freshly made and looked delicious. I ended up grabbing a loaf of sourdough and a pistachio tart. I also grabbed a cup of coffee to go. Everything tasted great. At this point, they're our go-to for rolls at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their customer service is fantastic; it always has been, even during the chaos of holiday pick-up... which they've now streamlined and it seems to be working really well! Instead of going inside the store, there's a handful of people waiting outside for you near the door to the right of the entrance. Show up at your designated time, have your name/order number ready, and within minutes you'll be on your way! Shout-out to their updated website which a) now lists ingredients in their breads which helps us non-egg, non-dairy folks and b) allows you to place your holiday order directly online. We recently got a half dozen of our favorite Cranberry Walnut Rolls ("soft and chewy, slow-fermented, studded with walnuts and tart cranberries") which are sold individually for $2.55. If you've never tried these, you're missing out! Stopped by Standard bakery for some goodies on my way home from Portland. They never disappoint. The wild rice porridge loaf is really good. Hearty, wholesome, crusty outside, soft inside. I also had a cheese, egg, ham Danish that was fantastic. I also tried a chocolate chip cookie that was phenomenal. And a scone with blueberries that was fantastic. Service was kind. A Maine local friend highly recommended Standard Baking to us. He said their sourdough is out of this world and also reminded us to skip the scones (they are rather dry). Honestly, I truly think this bakery is truly living up to its hype!! The line was very long on a weekend morning, but it moved fast. We only waited 20 minutes in line. The Maine Miche Bread, a whole wheat sourdough, was my favorite of this haul. Crunchy crust, soft and tangy interior. Only $8.50 for a big loaf. 10/10. Blueberry Lemon Tart blew our mind. It was SO DELICIOUS that we almost went back to wait in line again. We should've tried more tarts and fruit pastries. The croissant texture was perfect, and so as the pain au chocolate. Standard Baking was one of the most recommended bakeries, so we had to see what the hype was all about. Reviews suggested there would be a line, but don't let it by a deterrent. There was a line, and it did not move as fast as expected. There were so many bakery items to chose from, so we ordered a variety. Some items were ham and cheese croissants, granola bar, chocolate chip cookies, brownie, and morning buns. We were not disappointed by any of items, except the ham and cheese croissant had mustard , which we did not expect, but it was notated on the sign . The brownie and cookies were excellent, so fresh. The croissants were flaky and buttery. It does help if you know what you want when it is your turn , for faster service. As an almond Pastry lover, I loved loved loved this. One thing I love more than almonds, walnuts. The walnut sticky bun here is the best pastry to ever be created. It is so perfectly soft while staying firm with a nice bite and the crunchy sweet caramelized walnuts on top just set it to be a heavenly bite one after the other. Best pastry to exist. The pan au chocolat is a chocolate lovers dream. I am not a big sweets person which is why I prefer pastries instead of sweets like donuts and cakes, but this chocolate heaven is was something else. Not to sweet, but a perfect decadent flavor in every bite with the buttery soft flaky croissant. Delicious. The lemon poppy seed cake was great too. Really nice lemon flavor with the slight crunches of the poppy seed. This cake was so moist and soft, but yet didn't crumble. It was a really great bite and definitely recommend to anyone who likes lemon. The cookies here were good too, the salted chocolate chip had a great sweet and salty flavor. The oatmeal raisin was good, but nothing crazy. I am also very spoiled with the northstar cafe oatmeal raisin cookie so take this with a grain of salt. If you know then you're blessed. All three were delicious and it's hard to say that I liked one more than the other - they were all essentially perfect versions of what they were. There was a line at around 10am but it moved relatively quickly. The building has an old industrial feel that suits a bakery well. Our server at an oyster bar recommended this bakery, and said it's a popular place where there's usually long lines. We were fortunate to arrive when there was no line at all. Upon entering, you pretty much reach the front counter/display a few steps into the building, hence the lines out the door. Did not see indoor dining, only a few benches and tables right outside of the entrance. My husband and I picked out a few items that looked good: vanilla bean madeline, a sea salt chocolate chip pecan cookie, garlic herb cruffin and walnut morning bun. Each item was placed in individual paper bags. The madeline tasted freshly baked and not overly sweet; cookie was the perfect combination of sweet and salty, with chocolate in each bite; the walnut bun was yummy but would've been even better if warmed up. We stopped here twice during our trip to Maine. They have a great selection of breads, cookies and pastries. The first time there wasn't a line. The next time it was way out the door. However, they have two checkers and it doesn't take long. I especially liked their almond macaroons, although the coconut ones were good too. Their biscotti was yummy as were their other breads. We stopped by for some breakfast pastries and coffee. I got a black iced coffee and my wife got an iced coffee with cream (both cold brew). They were good; a bit light if anything but they hit the spot. We also got a financier, a baguette, an apricot/almond scone, and an egg/ham/cheese danish. We walked over to the waterfront and ate the scone and the danish with our coffees, and it was delightful. Both tasted great. I've been to this bakery a few times during my visits to Maine and I've always been impressed. This time I tried more of a variety and I have no notes. Perfection. An awesome artisan bakery snuggled in between some buildings near the eastern downtown waterfront of Portland. The team inside was super friendly and took time to explain many of the different items they offer as we made our selection. Tried the baguette, olive bread, Asiago fogasse, morning buns, berry brickle. There was an expansive menu of different breads and desserts. The place is very small inside with barely enough room for a dozen people to stand shoulder to shoulder waiting for their baked delicacies. Standard Baking is, for me, one of the best bakeries in Portland. I initially visited back in 2021 during my first proper trip to Portland, and really wanted to check it out again. We weren't staying too far from here, so one morning we decided to stop by and pick up some bakes before heading out on the day's adventures. Standard Baking is owned by a company that also runs several other eateries in Portland - Fore Street, Street and Co., and Scales. Standard is actually located on the lower level of the Fore Street restaurant that faces Commercial Street. When I first visited in 2021 we were not allowed inside due to COVID protocols, however the business was fully open now. Even still, it's a small space and the line usually extends out to the large parking lot in the foreground of the entrance. Their selection is vast - there are limited protein options here, but they make up for it with several sweet and (some) savory bakes. During this recent trip we decided to pick up several items: frangipane, breakfast bun with walnuts, prosciutto and asiago croissant, blueberry oat scone, orange cream spelt scone, and a raspberry galette. Everything was delicious - the biggest standouts for me were the breakfast bun and the frangipane. The former was filled with cinnamon and the walnut topping was almost like candy mmm. The latter was the perfect consistency and topped with plum to really take it to another level. Service was fast and friendly - I left with a t-shirt which shows you how much I love this spot. Overall, definitely make it your intention to visit if you're in the Portland area - Standard is not to be missed. read more
