There is a street Downtown Niagara, Clifton. It mimics a Las Vegas strip. Plenty to see and more to do. Busy, fun and crowded. Museums, eateries and gift shops. We purchased a package that included the Nightmare Experience. Me: chicken, crybaby, scaredy cat, whatever name you have for me, I happily accept. Never liked scary movies; I know what you did last summer, scream and others like that. NO monsters! Every now and then I will try a haunted house because I know without a doubt, they are just PEOPLE dressed in costumes. Before entering we were asked a million questions about our health, including heart issues and seizures. Ok, I'm already scared. The young lady that took our tickets gave very specific instructions. Hold on to each other and follow the tiny red lights on the wall. It is completely dark inside. What!!! We are in line and once the light turns green to go, we enter. Our final warnings are NO hitting or kicking. If we want to end the scare, all we have to do is yell "nightmare"! Really? Well, she didn't lie! It was total darkness! I was scared because I couldn't see any of the scares coming. None of the monsters that jumped out, or spiders that crawled on me, or the jeep that almost hit us. That was pretty cool. Forewarning, this is a very very particular type of haunted house, so be aware of what you're getting into. Most haunted houses in Niagara falls (and just in general) are set up to be dark, have some gags, some props, neat decor to look at, maybe some scare-actors in costume; this is not that. This is a dark maze, with dead ends, winding corridors, narrow crawlspaces, and shrinking rooms. There are minimal gags & props, and more loud legitimately terrifying noises, electric shocks right next to your head, and the props are designed to scare the absolute life out of you, and your only guide is a small red light in the ceiling; so if that's what you're into, then this place is top notch. If however you prefer a more calm, artistic haunted house, with an actor in a vampire costume jumping out in front of you, then this place might be a bit much. They took two pictures, in both of which I was screaming and clutching my boyfriend Great mix of sensory elements, and it's good they have a safe word for if it's too much. Some fair warnings (minimal spoilers): Flashing lights Pitch black almost the whole time (the only thing to lead you being the red lights) Extremely claustrophobic? Don't go in. Great! We went on a Wednesday around 1p and there was no line. It was fun. I think I laughed and used Ethan as a shield the whole time. Parking onsite was $15 for 8 hours. There's some parking lots on the next street behind the business that was $5 for all day parking. We opted for that instead. Since we were there less than 30 minutes it was definitely a better option. More about the actual experience, my heart rate was peaking at 90 bpm before even entering but that's due to my dramatic self! You walk up some stairs then enter in. At first it's dimly lit. Then it is pitch dark with red markers help guide where you are to walk towards next. A bunch of jump scares, loud sounds, and such. Then you think you're done when you go down some stairs but nope there's more. I think it was a great experience. It's only $15 or if you purchase online then it's a bit cheaper. For the price it's not bad. They have a shop for further souvenirs and you view your photos. One for $8 and both for $15. This business is outside the Clifton Hill adventure area where you can do a number of things like SkyWheel and then walk or take the bus down to Niagara Falls. I wasn't expecting anything like this! I've never been in a haunted house that is completely in the dark! There were 4 of us, so we all lined up and were holding each others shoulders through the whole thing. This would be a good team building exercise because you really need the person at the front to describe the terrain and what direction to go in. As you go through the dark maze, different things happen like people jumping out at you, loud noises and flashing lights. Sometimes all three at the same time. The people who were doing the scaring did a fantastic job! They were very interactive and it seemed like they followed us through the whole thing rather than your basic haunted house where people are parked in the same place and do the same thing every time someone walks by. They responded to us if we made any comments, and they payed attention to what scared us the most so that they could use that to their advantage. Overall, we had a great time! We were very happy with the experience. One note, is that if you have a disability or a mobility issue, be sure to talk to them about it because there is an area that requires crouching or crawling. read more

Legitimately Peed our pants in fear! Walked in and went to get our tickets. The cashier advised us that it was in fact known as the most scary haunted house and that there are no refunds. We went into the line to await our turn to proceed into the actual attraction. They send you in with your group and give the previous group enough time to get to a certain point so you aren't running into other groups. The Staff and actors are really good at their jobs, and in the few times that we got off track and lost sight of the little red lights that were our only salvation, there would be your guardian ghoul looking out for you to help you get back on track, not that you could actually see him that is. Nightmares Fear Factory is hyped as the scariest and best haunted house in Niagara Falls, Canada. They are even a two time winner for best attraction in Niagara Falls. Knowing that they were voted best attraction, if this was the first thing I went to in Niagra Falls, I would go home after I went through this because if this is the best they have to offer, I'd hate to waste my money on everything else that's going to suck worse than this. Their website has plenty of hype including pics of scared patrons on their website. My wife was apprehensive about going because she heard so much about it...about how scary it was. Well, the king is naked. This really isn't a haunted house. It's a dark maze. You enter, hit this button that will activate an animatronic and then the entire place goes black. You're supposed to follow the "red lights" to find your way out. So maybe this place will scare the hell out of you if you're afraid of the dark. But there's nothing to see. The only "scares" are the two spots that have a bright flash triggered to get your picture in the boring blackness that you're wading yourself thru. I think one is supposed to look like a car coming at you. Yeah, okay. They have this board that counts the number of people who have chickened out today along with a lifetime count of people that have chickened out. Well, I wonder how much of that is real. The only reason I think anyone would "chicken out" is because they panicked and didn't know what to do in two spots. Both involve squeeze walls, one coming from the top and the other coming from the sides. For the top, get on your knees and crawl a few feet and you're out. For the walls, just wait and the walls eventually go down and they let you out. The price of admission is exceedingly high considering that they didn't have to sink any money into props. There are other haunts that suck in Niagra Falls as well, but at least they are cheaper and you at least have something to look at. We made it through. We bought our "we survived' t-shirts. But do yourself a favor and just buy the shirt if you want to. Then you can tell everyone that it was dark and you just followed the red lights to get out. Whoo hoo!!! read more

I enjoyed this haunted house. The first time I did it was over 15 years ago or so. This is scary but not in a sense where things are creepy and look scary as hell but that like someone else mentioned, you are literally walking in the dark following red lights to know where the doors are. There are no props or decor. It is literally dark as hell and you are feeling your way around to find your way out. Of course, this naturally will make you jumpy and react a certain way. For me, this made me jittery and paranoid that something would jump out. And even though you KNOW something is going to come out, you are still screaming when something finally comes out and reaches for you. It's fun and it will always make you jump. Doesn't matter how many times you've been through it, each time is different and each time you will freak out. Ever wondered if you can survive a haunted house walk with someone or on your own. I'll give you a guide of how my gf and I did during our trip to Niagara Falls. Voted as one of the best place to get the gibbies, we wanted to test our courage. We walked in, looked at the board of over 100K ppl that chickened out since they've been operating. We looked at the ones that made it that day...5ppl! We go in, purchase two tickets for a whopping $30!!! So the person tells us if we are scared to yell 'Nightmares' and someone will guide us out. He informed us when we ready to walk through and go up-stairs. We go up holding hands...The anticipation and all the creepy thoughts are there as we come to the door awaiting to open... Thump thump our hearts with maybe nervousness or excitement...Hands sweaty! Not sure mine or gf, we exhaled and entered the dark room. The door closes, we can start to hear a guy's voice behind with the creepy sounds. Didn't know where to go, so he mentioned follow the red lights in a creepy manner, so we did. My gf and I just kept talking to each other through this dark journey. I was trying to focus on the red light, where my gf was holding my hands firm behind me. I told her to walk in front of me as a joke, but she refused. Haha We continued walking and the guy made continuous creepy sounds to loud screams. Each area we passed through it seemed like he was trailing behind us. We come across this bridge and we were walking in the middle and the guy was jumping and shaking the bridge, but we were fine. There's was a point where we heard chainsaw sounds on the bottom of our foot, and I literally bent down and looked at the person performing the prop. He looked at me and ran off. Haha We also had long thick noodles drop on our head, and my gf said she felt something grab her leg and I felt something grab my shoulder. I mentioned this to my gf as we were laughing together about it. We come across where there's a car about to run you over with loud horn sounds, and that's where you get one photo taken of your scare. We just looked and had this face -_- while it happened. Then we got stuck at one spot where we couldn't move, b/c we were trapped and shower drapers were closing in on us and we couldn't move, during which I was informing I heard of this to my gf and we were stuck, so we just shared a much needed kiss! Once the drapers deflated, we walked through to more darkness and red light searching until the guy pops out shooting us with empty paintball gun and we looked at him and smiled as we were leaving. We felt ripped off b/c this place is not scary at all. We felt that it was prob one guy in there doing the whole gig himself. At the end, we looked at our photos and it wasn't the 'scared shitless' like what you see on the website. We were smiling all the way. I give props that the guys voice is quite loud and powerful, but in no way is it a haunted house, but a dark maze walkover. I feel I could do a haunted house better than what is offered here for the price we paid Price for $30 two ppl gets you two tickets indicating you 'survived'. I'd like to preface this review by saying that I love haunted houses! I've been in my fair share that haven't been overly scary, but I appreciate them for their creativity and the fun factor. Nightmares Fear Factory only elicited one response from me: BOREDOM! I was in Niagara Falls with some friends for a bachelor party and we thought this would be a lot of fun. The advertisement outside said over 80,000 people had chickened out. This number was corrected to be over 130,000 people by one of the employees. We were even more excited to hear that so many people found it scary. Upon walking into the main lobby, it's a pretty commercial place that spent more effort on getting you to buy their merchandise than they did decorating. I figured they tried to make it "friendlier" to attract more people. The guys told us to hang on to one another as we went through and then sent us into the door. For the next 4-5 minutes, we followed little red dots on a wall and listened to dome bang on a wall, blow air on us, and occasionally grab at our feet. A door opened and we were in a lit stairwell. My first thought was, "That's it?!?!" We walked down the steps and back into another darkened hallway. I thought to myself, "Ok, that must have been the warm up for what's to come." Unfortunately, nothing else happened. The whole "haunted house" took us just under 10 minutes and there were only two real gimmicks they used to try and scare us. One is a room where they lock you in the dark and then inflate the walls so they push on you. If you're claustrophobic, I can see how this part would freak you out, but it's pretty much like having a semi-inflated air mattress push against you. The only other "event" to happen must be their trademark because that's where they take all the photos. As you're walking along, there's a loud sound of a horn and then headlights start coming at you. Shortly after, you walk through a door and into the lobby. Similar to a roller coaster at any amusement park, you can purchase your candid photos for a ridiculous price. Our photos showed two of us looking bored, one guy looking skeptical, and another guy laughing. I truly wanted to enjoy this! I wanted to be scared and walk out of there with my heart thumping in my chest! I would have been happy with friends making fun of me for jumping or yelling, but none of that happened. Bought two tickets. The male cashier had zero personality. I tried to compliment him on reading the name on my credit card. He had a slight attitude saying, "I check everyone's in case it's stolen". Funny he didn't check my ID. Reading the name does nothing security wise. Stood in line at least 15 minutes to enter the attraction. We were the only ones in line. There was a couple that went in ahead of us. Tried to ask the same cashier if we were able to proceed. He ignored us and stood on the opposite side of the counter. The attraction is in complete darkness and you follow red lights to get through. Did not impress us due to the poor customer service of the cashier. Alright - this place was pretty fun. They do an excellent job of hyping you up even before you get to the place. The marketing around it, and the photos actually made me nervous and there was a point where I said I wasn't going to go. But I eventually agreed. Waiting in line for me was exciting. You could hear everyone's screams as they walked through, so it makes you a little nervous. You're already scared before you get in. Walking through is fun. It's dark, and so naturally you're jumpy. You don't know where the next scare is coming from because it is pitch dark. While it's not "scary" it's fun because the "scares" make you jump and scream. Basically you make it as fun as you want. 3 1/2 stars is way too low. I have been to this place twice, 10 years apart. The first time was the first time a haunted house actually made by heart beat fast. I have been to many haunted houses since then and never had the adrenaline rush that this haunted house gave me. When I went back there this year I wasn't disappointed. If you don't want to know too much (and it's better if you don't) stop reading. There are no gory or scary scenes. There are no actors or people dressed up. There is mostly nothing- just complete darkness and you have to find your way out of it. At one point, we were completely stuck and had no idea where to go. I'll admit almost screaming the safe word once or twice and having someone come and rescue me. It's not for people afraid of the dark or tight spaces. Walking around in pitch black, loud props and demented actors who chase and pop out to scare you...yuuuuup I couldn't have asked for more at Nightmares Fear Factory!! I ended up being that victim who screamed like a girl, held on to my friend in front of me for dear life, and probably gave the staff here such a good laugh! This was a really cool and terrifying experience that I had with some friends. Reasonably priced, cool layout of the lobby and the haunted house (I'm guessing it was cool even though you're practically blind in there). (1989 Batman reference) We danced, we screamed and I was outta, outta, outta there like a bat outta hell. The days that followed had me practicing my diaphragmatic breathing in dark places. Every loud sound had me dashing for the exit sign as if Death were opening the door to my coffin. My brush with death (based on my suspension of disbelief) left me jumpy for a week. I went in only knowing the number of chickens that flew the coop before submitting to their cowardice. Those who forge their way through the darkness without clues are more likely to scream a little louder at the clicks, pops and booms. I screamed, I cowered, I ate the floor and I prayed for daylight. I've been through this place 3 times and I still end up in a cold sweat by the end. I last visited with my boyfriend and actually had to ply him with drinks to get him to even consider stepping foot into Nightmares. It is very dark, so part of the fear comes from being disoriented, but there's more to it than that. There are workers hidden in the dark, and they use the darkness to their advantage- reaching out and grabbing passersby, breathing into your ears and generally creating a terrifying atmosphere. Don't go alone, and do yourself a favor and pony-up for the photo after you're through; the absolute terror on your face will provide your friends with hours of entertainment. read more

Platforms that suddenly become uneven! EEEK! Shrieks from behind you! SHWOOP! Walls closing in on you! Oh, but did I mention you don't see anything pretty much the entire time? It was a solid auditory experience, but I hardly saw any of the stuff that was supposed to cause me nightmares. A few flashes, sure, and one semi-startling moment where something comes at you (I won't say what), but I found myself wanting more of those moments. My only complaint is that the people scaring you will also touch you. I didn't mind so much when they grabbed my ankle, although that was terrifying.
