If you are AUTHENTIC "nigiri" sushi lover, you must give this place a try!! I am Japanese and I've tried many well-known sushi joints in NYC (ie: Sushiden, Sushi of Gari, etc.) but Nihon Kai's "nigiri", I must say is up to par with the best sushi in NYC for less damage to your wallet. If you don't know what to order a la carte, I strongly suggest going with "Top Ten Sushi" or "Chef's choice". I'm usually not a big fan of "akagai" or "aoyagi", but when served at Nihon Kai, I devour it and can go for another... That's how good their sushi is. I love every sushi I get there, but what makes this place special for me is their "saba" (Mackerel) nigiri. I am so used to the rock-hard super vinegary "shime-saba" served at other places. Although I do enjoy those too, I've never had such fresh "saba" anywhere other than Nihon Kai... One unusual sushi I always order is "spicy scallop". This one has spicy mayo underneath the scallop "gunkan" style, and the scallop is so fresh, plump, sweet and melts in your mouth! Their "neta" has always been super fresh, but I've heard that Thursdays are the freshest. The place being BYOB definitely helps keep your cost down. I'm not a huge sushi fan - if I have to eat it, I will, but generally I prefer my fish a little bit more cooked. If you want to go to a Japanese restaurant with someone who doesn't like sushi, Nihon Kai is probably the place to go. There are a ton of hot options and a pretty diverse menu. The gyoza is okay - nothing really special. But the udon is delicious and I really enjoyed it - super fresh. Overall, it's a really good neighborhood spot. I wouldn't go out of the way for any of the food, but if you live in the Bergenfield/New Milford/Dumont area, I think it's the best Japanese in the area. read more

Quite good Japanese cuisine that actually has delivery! Online ordering! NJ restaurant moving into this century! The service is painfully slow though, and that extends to delivery. Sushi is solid (not the best, but above decent). The hibachi specials are great - they give you a ton of food including your entree option, which is mixed with onions, zucchini and mushrooms, a side salad, and delicious hibachi rice, as well as a small miso soup on the side. I've never loved the steak or shrimp or scallops that come as the entree (just okay), but the other parts are worth it. Udon noodles are also worth ordering - large portion with lots of noodles and veggies, and some of whatever you order. Steak is my favorite as it adds lots of flavor to the dish, but the fiancé prefers the shrimp. Absolutely worth checking out, particularly if you're looking for delivery (such limited options in the area)... just prepare to be really patient! read more

I've tried several sushi places in the area and this one is pretty good. Got the delivery and their online system is pretty good -- easy to use and was able to get my food at a reasonable time. I ordered the calamari appetizer which came with a delicious sweet garlic sauce. The portion for the appetizer was also great. My boyfriend and I didn't even finish all of it. For sushi, we got an eel roll which was great, I loved the sauce that they put on top. We also got a california roll, which is a pretty standard dish. And we got a Philly roll which was also good. I order online from here frequently and am a fan. The sushi is fresh and reasonably priced which is often hard to find. I like the way they cut the rolls into slightly larger pieces and have crunchy sesame seeds for texture. The lunch specials and bento boxes are a great deal which I love. I was looking for a sushi place in Bergenfield and was pleasantly surprised to actually find one. I decided to try it out and see if Bergenfield could really have "good sushi". Washington Ave. is not exactly known for fine dining but what the hey, its close, let me give it a try. I went in with my dad and I ordered spicy tuna and salmon rolls, a yellowtail sashimi and ikura (salmon roe). Was absoloutely delicious. My dad does not eat sushi so he ordered from the grill side. What he ordered really suprised me, it was teriyaki meat rolled on top of scallions, to form a roll sort of. Just absoloutely yummy. Im not sure what it is called but I will be sure to get it next time. the best part is the price, Oh maaan. For such delicious stuff, it is priced so well. Maybe it's because it is Bergenfield, but who knows. I don't mind at all. Service was nice, but they could have been a but more cheery, our waiter did not smile all that much. But he was really attentive and checked up on us often, never had to ask for refills. Overall great place. You would be hard pressed to find better quality sushi at this price. read more

This is my first yelp review, but I figured I'd review a restaurant I truly love. This place has been here forever, but you don't really notice it because it's so small and it's located on the pretty lame Bergenfield main street strip. Don't be fooled. I've been going to Nihon Kai for years and I hope this place stays here forever. At one point, my parents would frequent the place at least twice a week. The place is no longer owned by Mr. Lee, but it was sold to a family member, Peter, that worked extensively at Nihon Kai prior to taking the place over. SUSHI: We love the chirashi bowl, dragon roll, josh hand roll, raw oysters. Everything is so fresh and you really cannot beat the quality. They've really expanded their specialty rolls, and some of them definitely are worth trying. East, down the street, has NOTHING on Nihon Kai. Blech.D Cookied: Dinner bento box with salmon or chicken teriyaki, yakitori, and the beef udon. YUM! I've been to Mr. Lee's new restaurant (Hachi in Fort Lee) a few times and honestly, I think Nihon Kai's cooked food is better. Give this place a chance. Peter and his staff are extremely hard working and humble people. They serve quality food that is consistent. There really isn't another place around this area with such high quality ingredients. If you're really hell bent on the highest quality sushi, go to Masa Sushi and Grill in Allendale. Get ready to pay an arm and a leg though. =) read more

We've ordered the $100 sushi/sashimi platter, sashimi dinner boxes, assortment of rolls, tempura udon, teriyaki bento boxes (FYI--they do not give rice with any meat teriyaki bento boxes so don't forget to ask for a side of rice!) This place is amazing. Great price and very nice employees. Some of the best sushi I've ever eaten and I frequently have amazing sushi dinners in Manhattan through my work. There are a million sushi places between where I live and where this is but I don't mind the drive or sometimes annoying parking. Hands down, my favorite sushi restaurant! I don't even live bear Bergenfield, but if I want good sushi, that's where I go! It's perfect if you're in Paramus shopping at the malls. I love the mix of spicy flakes they give you to put in their unbelievable udon soup. I have yet to find a Japanese restaurant that serves Udon soup like Nihon Kai does. So we tried it though weary of 3.5 star review on yelp. We were pleasantly surprised by some of the best sushi we've had in a while. Very fresh, reasonably priced and BYOB to boot. Parking is available in the back which we didn't know until after we struggled to find street parking. read more

I'm not sure why people would give this place a 5 star rating. It's mediocre at best. I ordered from this restaurant knowing it wasn't an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant and that was a mistake. First, for some reason, they like to drench their rolls with unagi (eel) sauce...when they shouldn't be! Case in point, the futomaki. Why would you cover the entire roll with the sauce?? Just because there's an eel in it doesn't mean you need the sauce! Then you have the spicy tuna...where's the spiciness or the spicy mayo sauce? No where. And the flavor was lacking. Another disappointment. The negi Toro roll and salmon avocado roll did not taste good at all....very fishy, not fresh. And the grilled yellowtail collar was a disaster. Why would you cover the entire collar with chili peppers and tobiko?! It's suppose to just be grilled with a little salt and a lemon on the side. Simple. It was horrible! Sushi is not fresh...period! I tried this restaurant after reading the great reviews on yelp and was I surprised. This was one of the worst meals I have ever had in a restaurant. Yes, not worst sushi meal, but worst meal of any kind. So much bad food...so few characters available to type. Here goes! The crab in the seaweed salad was frozen. Not just crisped but fully frozen. And the lettuce that it was served on was limp and old. The seaweed was ok but the house dressing was indescribable. I mean I really have no idea what it was except that it tasted really bad. Next victim please. The tamago (egg sushi), which is supposed to be sweet, was actually tasteless. It did not taste bad. It just had no flavor. I wish the makers of my cough medicine would call them to learn how to remove flavor. The fantasy roll, which is listed as fried salmon covered in crunch, tasted like canned salmon wrapped in my lawn. The crunch was good though. The salmon tatake looked really good and was passable but it was way over spiced. On the positive, the miso soup was wet and the green tea was green and hot. read more

I loved this salad the first time I had it at another sushi spot in Hoboken so I was excited when I saw it on there menu. After I tried two bites I had to spit it out!! Alright sushi. What I didn't like is that the shrimp tempura roll was soggy and not crunchy. Spicy tuna was alright.. the color threw me off a little (more of a dull color rather than a bright red) and salmon avocado was good. I take the spicy mayo with most of my rolls..I love the spicy mayo! I always sit at the bar area and I think they know my name by now. I'm a huge sushi snob, and Nihon Kai gave me everything I was looking for. However, the main sushi chef and owner, Lee, passed his restaurant to his family members around a year ago, and the place dropped slightly in service since. The chefs do not talk to customers as much, as the waitresses aren't too attentive. Apparently thats a custom of Lee, who works everyday (except for thanksgiving when he goes to the AC) for a couple years, goes somewhere else, starts another restaurant, and works and so on. As far as the food goes, it has good quality fish, a surprisingly low/decent price and it is by far the best japanese restaurant within miles. For you proud sushi lovers out there, do not be fooled by its location, size, or emptiness at times, it is hiding some serious skill in the kitchen. My favorite roll by far is the Dynamite Roll, which should be tried by everyone, and they do not skimp out on the portion of fish. Even though the chefs are not Japanese themselves, the food they serve is still amazing. Nihon Kai has been my family restaurant for two years now, where they remember our exact order, our names, and they always give us complementary green ice cream, which is the best I've had for some reason. I must find out where they get it, as it is the creamiest and richest I've ever had. This isn't really a complement of the restaurant, but just my idle musings. So all in all, I would recommend this restaurant anytime, unless you are searching for a top notch Japanese restaurant where price is not an issue.
