Amazing grocery store! While there are many amazing produce and freezer items, my go-to here are the sashimi and seafood in the back cooler. Never thought I would say I love 'monkfish liver' but something about it is mesmerizing and I want one every time I come here! Mackerel is delicious. Chotoro is fantastic! Service here is great and checkout is quick and efficient. Love the dining area to eat the sushi immediately. Have had many lunches here and love that there's a microwave available for use, too. When I'm looking for some Japanese seafood (saikyo miso marinated fish, ikura, tobiko), Japanese pantry items (soy, rice vinegar, honmirin, dashi packets, senbei), or fresh produce in small batches, Nijiya is the most convenient one-stop market. The bulk of my grocery shopping is elsewhere but for anything Japanese I will come here for a better selection. Nijiya will portion and sell fresh produce or fruit, seafood and meats in smaller sizes suitable for single households. There are many instant or one pot products - they're admittedly not the healthiest but you buying convenience. This is a norm in Japan and I'm happy that they continue the practice here in Honolulu. And for the ultimate in convenience Nijiya stocks a long shelf of prepared foods. Supermarket sushi and chirashi is not the best, but it's super accessible. There are lots of single serving sides. And their bento packs are stuffed full of different bites. Combine the prepared food with a chilled beverage and their seating area at the front and you have a quick stop for a meal. I also like their location on the Ewa end of Ala Moana underneath Bloomingdales. I can window shop my favorite stores, grab a cocktail at a department store nearby, and get some groceries or prepared food to take home. I love shopping at Nijiya but believe they are wasting their money on the current security company that they have hired. Every time I shop there, which is at the minimum 2-3 times a week, I see the security guards constantly on their mobile phones and not doing what they are hired to do. This guy especially. He's always on his mobile phone checking the social media. Nijiya needs to hire a better security guard company. read more

The men's bathroom has a leaking sink faucet and it's been like that for months: Today was not a small leak. Water was pouring out full blast: I tried to turn it off but the faucet is broken. I have reported many times to the staff and today to one of the store manager. All he said was we are aware of it but nothing can be done. I looked at him and said are you serious? All you have to do is replace the old damaged one with a new one and the problem is resolved. I can't believe the store manager and staff don't care especially when the island is experiencing a drought. Hope higher management is reading this and will be more responsible and fix the leaky faucet in the men's bathroom. You need to do your part in conserving precious water. read more

I love this Nijiya location because it's so conveniently located within Ala Moana and the parking outside is super easy with wide stalls. While this is my go to spot for rice and a few other Japanese grocery items that I can't live without, I've recently begun bringing my son here for a quick but delicious sushi lunch. They have great seating area (that's air conditioned!) with enough space for my stroller. They only allow food purchased from their store understandably, so don't make the mistake of bringing in outside items. Their sushi is amazing. So much variety and so fresh!! I feel the price is reasonable, too. Plus they have some great additional items like Japanese veggie sides, karaage chicken, etc. that are truly amazing. read more

***4.5 STARS*** I'm not a fan of shopping at the mall. Don't care for crowds and at times having to circle around looking for parking while competing with aggressive and inconsiderate drivers. However, when I want to get good quality sashimi, decent grab and go sushi and Japanese products, this is my go to place. I also enjoy low key dinners where I'll pick up food and go to my sister's place. The kiddies enjoy sashimi so Nijiya it is. I've found their offerings to be consistently fresh and of above average quality. Nijiya relocated from Puck's Alley on University Ave to Ala Moana Center back in November 2022. They are located on 1F Ewa, Makai side of Ala Moana with neighbors of Old Navy and Pressed Juicery. Mid afternoons seem to be great for me as I'll take a couple hours off from work to make my way here. I make a beeline to the chiller section in the back to survey their sashimi offerings. I also will check out the Japan mentaiko (spicy pollack roe) and fresh shiso leaves. I also enjoy shopping at Nijiya because of its bright and clean display offerings. I stop by their grab and go premade foods corner by surveying the sushi, sides and desserts. Sometimes I'll check out their nori as my family likes good quality ones for the hand rolls. It may cost pretty pennies but worth it in my books. Overall, Nijiya is a great place to shop at with great selection, quality and convenience. This is my go to grocery store when I want a fix of Japan without hopping on a plane. It's also a great source for healthy whole non processed foods when I want a quick healthy prepared meal. History: This Japanese grocery chain was actually founded (1986) in San Diego, California, by Tadayasu Ito, a Japanese immigrant. His mission was to bring authentic Japanese groceries items to the U.S., with an emphasis on freshness and quality. Many products are directly imported from Japan. They also run their own organic farm in California to supply fresh produce. Over the years, Nijiya grew into a chain of Japanese supermarkets across California, Hawaii, and even New York. The Honolulu Ala Moana Central location is one of the newer stores, opening in late 2022. From specialty soy sauces to frozen gyoza, you'll find brands here you won't see at the big box stores. Plus, they've got seasonal treats like sakura mochi or New Year's osechi items. Bentos: The grab-and-go section is perfect for lunch or dinner when you don't feel like cooking. Freshly made bentos, sushi trays, onigiri (rice balls), grilled saba, salmon, sashimi trays and more are all ready to eat. Although, admittedly, their sashimi is not my favorite. Pro tip - if you come towards closing time, many of the grab and go items are discounted. Fresh Seafoods The seafood case is small compared to a big box store but very impressive. Whole sea bass and Saba, salmon and salmon heads, shrimp, mackerel, butterfish and more. And they all look super fresh. The Meats: The meat section is equally as impressive with selected, high-quality meats. DuBreton pork loin, sliced thin for sukiyaki, raised without antibiotics and perfect for a sweet-salty, spicy nabe (hot pot) broth. Right next to it, they carry Meyer Natural Angus Prime Beef ribeye, marbled and rich, ideal for steak night or even a luxurious twist on Japanese dishes. Not budget friendly but worth the splurge. And if you're planning nabe night, they've got ready-prepped packs of meat sliced thinly and prepped veggies ready to go straight to the hot pot. Produce Section: Surprisingly solid for a small market. They stock shiso, daikon, Japanese cucumbers, and other hard-to-find veggies that's curated towards a Japanese kitchen. Sake & Wine: To round out your meal, Nijiya has a thoughtful sake lineup from junmai ginjo to premium daiginjo, and even a small but curated wine section that pairs beautifully with meat, seafood or hot pot. You can even find Dom Perignon!! Bonus: There's a dining area with plenty of tables plus counter seating if you're flying solo. They've even got two microwaves to heat up your bento or side dishes. Wow! The new location of Nijiya at the bottom level of Ala Moana Shopping Center, near Ross, on the Bloomingdale's side, is amazing! The inside is super clean, bright, and very well organized. Parking is MUCH easier to find on that side of Ala Moana. Staff is friendly and helpful. Each aisle is always well-stocked with clear signs. Items are easy to find, and I feel there's more variety, and from Japan items. One of their bigger upgrades is the prepared and ready to eat sushi, bentos, and other foods. The prices are more than reasonable, and the quality and freshness is the same or even better than restaurants! Even the discounted ones are quite fresh (even on the next day) and an awesome deal! There's also an eating area where you can sit and enjoy, including a microwave to heat up your food. An awesome place to grab a meal! Will definitely visit more often! read more

Located in the lower level of Ala Moana - Near ROSS. This is a small japanese supermarket that offers produce and bento lunches for easy pickup and souvenirs. They offer tables to sit and enjoy your bento and also a microwave / hot pot for water for ramen bowls. They sell Pocari Sweat here (Japanese clear gatorade) in which I was intrigued by. This bottle of hydration water (sweet) has alot of sugar in it so be mindful - It has a taste that I can't pinpoint but it is refreshing to drink. The bento were tempting - they offer raw sushi, sandwiches (tuna egg and deli meat). Also lunch bento that has fish/chicken/beef in it with rice furikake and sides. This section of the store was pretty busy. They also sell Japanese brand beauty items. I find the items to be pricey but if it's something you have been looking for and cannot find it online then I guess its worth splurging on a beauty item. They also offer other items from Korea, China and Philippines. Staff here are nice. They are helpful when needed . They had a few clearance sale items that were not bad but I noticed they were not "japanese". so I didn't bother with it . Most of the bentos are cold but they have a microwave to heat them up and a small section to sit and eat. Also run here for some Japanese snacks, candy and drinks. I like coming to Nijiya because they have scallop sashimi, you can't find that at Foodland. They also have some open seating for eating. It is clean, the atmosphere is relaxed, there is no waiting in line, and staff are welcoming and professional which is such a breath of fresh air compared to other supermarkets such as Whole Foods and Safeway. It's near Foodland so it's not hard to miss. The have baskets or a cute smaller shopping carts to put your baskets in for convenience as to not take up all the aisle space. Love that! I found a bunch of different items that I usually get at the Japanese store. I appreciate that many vegetables are organic and I can find practically everything. I also saw a lot of already prepared bentos and a few sandwiches. I guess the rent is pretty high, so it reflects on the prices but you can still find things on sale and at a decent price. As us Yelpers would say.........."Camera eats first!" In this case, Bruddah Fran totally blew it and wen' GRINDZ up his Spicy Tuna Don before he realized he didn't get a proper photo of his GRINDZ!!! Ai-yai-yai!!! It was lunchtime, and I found myself at the Ala Moana Shopping Center. The original plan was to check out the Chick-fil-A at the food court, but after getting to the Ala Moana food court and seeing the line, Bruddah Fran passed on da Chick-fil-A action! Walking around the food court, Bruddah Fran didn't see anything that appealed to him, so he decided to go to Foodland Farms. While walking over to Foodland Farms, he sees Nijiya Market and promptly made a quick detour into Nijiya Market to check out da grub. Nijiya Market is your typical market specializing you Japanese foods. Beside the dry grocery items, you can buy an array of meats & produce. I was basically here to check out the hot foods, as I've experienced their hot food sections at their Pucks Alley store location. Little did I know when I looked around the Ala Moana location, this store didn't have any hot foods, but they had a pretty large selection of Sushi/Bento in the refrigerated section of the store. Upon foraging the refrigerated shelves, I decided to get a Spicy Tuna Don. What can I say about the grub??? I will have to say that the Spicy Tuna Don was reasonably priced, the don bowl was fresh, and the portion size was just right. Inside the Spicy Tuna Don, they also put packets of organic soy sauce, wasabi paste, & sushi ginger. Overall, a wonderful lunch should you be wanting something quick while you're on the go! Located at the ewa wing of the Ala Moana Shopping Center (where the old Vintage Cave Cafe used to be), you can find this market just next door to the Famous Footwear store. I've been a customer of Nijiya Market for 30 years. I admit that Nijiya is a good Grocery Market because I buy a lot of fresh ingredients and Japanese food. One thing to be careful about using this Grocery Market is that you must pay with a credit card. If you use cash, it makes me feel dirty because it discriminates all counterfeit bills for $5.10 dollars. As a local, I have been dealt with this case several times. However, if you are Japanese, you don't have to worry because no matter how many $100 bills you put out, you don't have to be discriminated. Nijiya is a small chain of markets in California and Hawaii specializing in Japanese foods. THE STORE: Formerly part of the Ala Moana Plaza, they've relocated to the first level of Ala Moana Center in the Ewa (west) wing, I believe it took over part of the space that used to be the Vintage Cave restaurant. It's a lot smaller than I expected. Parking can be at a premium. On top of the expected goods, they also had a nice selection of sushi, bentos, beer and wine. A small dining room was available at the front. What I was on the hunt for and found was the Kagome-brand katsu sauce. It has the best balance of savory, sweet & tart of any brand on the market. Plus, it came in a size double of what I'm normally accustomed to with an affordable price to boot (500 ml for $6.29!). Another product I was looking for but believe is no longer made are the big sleeves of Shirakiku-brand teriyaki nori. I used to find it at Walmart but haven't seen it for years, nor on Amazon. Cashier service wasn't anything special as there was no greeting or gratitude. OVERALL: Broad selection of specialized groceries at competitive pricing. read more

I'm so used to the inherent claustrophobia of their San Francisco store that I was gobsmacked at the sleek, spacious market I entered at the Ala Moana Center. Apparently timing was on my side because it just opened last November relocated from a nearby location that was probably a lot more like the sister markets in San Francisco (review: https://bit.ly/3Zc61uZ) and San Jose (review: https://bit.ly/3TMqZzM). The first thing I noticed was the dining area in front which allowed people to buy the prepared food in the sushi/bento sectionand eat it there. A big plus that I at least haven't seen in their other markets. What remained consistent though was the extensive stock of perishables and the high quality of the Japanese food overall. Nice, clean and larger location that has better parking as it is now located within Ala Moana...makes picking up Asian groceries easier after a day of shopping. I found numerous items that have been unavailable at Marukai. Let's be honest, I would probably pick up a bento for dinner too! I was wondering why there were so many patrons lurking around the bento cooler. These people are in the know! They swarmed in to grab bentos as the employees unloaded the bins. Japanese markets always offer well presented and healthier grab and go food. Why just 4 stars? I found the prices to be a higher vs. Marukai and Don Quijote. I grabbed a bunch of Sumo oranges, then noticed the price was $4.99 each! Also, many of the produce are imported from China and Mexico. I would still come here to buy specialty items not readily available in Hawaii. Early lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... If you need a quick, convenient snack, Nijiya Market at Ala Moana Center might be a good place to go. Located between Bloomingdale's and Famous Footwear on the ground level on the Makai side of the mall, Nijiya Market is actually a grocery store with Japanese products. Besides fresh produce, packaged noodles, bottled sauces, frozen foods, and a meat department, there's a sushi and bento area with ready to go meals. I decided on a chirashi bowl. All of the fish items were fresh! I especially liked the ikura (salmon roe). It was just right to hold me over until the next meal! There's a dining area inside of the market with table and counter seating. A microwave station (warm up your bento!) at the entrance has paper towels, wipes, hot water dispenser (add water to your bowl of instant noodles!), and plastic bags for customer use. This Ala Moana location is much better than the University location because it's more spacious and has free, covered parking! I'll be back! read more

They have moved to their new location next to Famous Footwear on the oceanside. It's pretty nice and has a huge dining area to eat in at the front of the store. It's way bigger than the Pucks Alley location. They have all the usual Japanese products that you'd fine at these places: chips, candy, ramen, produce, seafood, meat, and frozen sections. They also have a ready to eat section that had musubis, sushi, and little bentos. I got there kind of late, so the selection wasn't good. I did find what I was looking for, the oden set. I've been to Nijiya Market probably every week since the new Ala Moana store opened. I got hooked on the ready made sushi section. My favorite is the negi toro maki sushi. They give you 8 pieces for $9.99 and it is delicious. I also buy the pre sliced sashimi trays that comes with maguro, salmon and hamachi. Tastes really fresh. The produce section is well maintained and the produce is very fresh. They sell quality meats in small portions so you can treat yourself to great tasting meal. There is a seating area where you can dine after your purchase is made and a microwave oven is available if you need it. You can eat reasonably cheap here and then go shopping for dinner. The variety of Japanese goods is pretty good for a small market. I've bought trays of matsutake mushrooms for $17.99 a pound, cheap. If you are at Ala Moana near Foodland Farms it is worth checking out. read more
