I had free parking right in front, so, I just walked into the cozy, low-key, dimly lit, old-school type of restaurant. The door was open and I couldn't feel any air-conditioning. The nice lady at the counter took my order and said that my plushies were cute when I started photographing them... LOL! We sat at the counter along the right wall. My Chirashi Bowl was okay - not the best. The sushi rice was still warm. The lettuce had a bit of brown on the edges. The fish, tamago, unagi, and tobiko were fresh. I would stop by again because it's so convenient! To be honest, I thought it was fine. The rolls were interesting, but not fabulous and it took a very long time for our order to be prepared.

My mom and I randomly discovered this place. Parking is right in front of the building off of Waialae. We decided to do take out and check it out! Cute, small establishment. You can eat in or do take out. A nice lady took our order and I think she also made our order as well. Everything made to order and fresh. I got the Chirashi and my mom got the lunch special! Lunch special came with a miso soup. They also have a dinner special as well. Prices are reasonable for what you get. The only thing that's tough, was getting out of the parking. Hopefully someone is nice enough to let you back out. Definitely pleased with the amount of food and taste! So good! Hit the spot. read more

Truly a hidden gem and I wish we had time to come back for a second time to eat her! I got a build your own poke with salmon and spicy mayo and omg! It was so fresh and so good! Great poke in the Kaimuki area. This is a sushi + poke restaurant on Waialae Ave, located right next to Kaimuki's Boston pizza. Parking can be kind of difficult as there's just street parking around the area, but you can definitely find a spot a block or so away and walk to the shop. The shop itself has a small, colorful interior with some bar and indoor table seating, and the person helping me was friendly. I ordered the Hawaiʻian style ahi poke bowl, and it was prepared very quickly. It was a good portion for the price, and the poke was very, very fresh. As another reviewer noted, the sushi rice underneath was a tad al dente for my liking, but otherwise I didn't have much to complain about. The total price was around $19 with tax and service charge. Service was fast, and the worker was kind, The store could seat about 10-15 people, and it is very clean in there. Be mindful of the parking. Brahhhhh so onolicious!!! I forgot what they used for the crunch in the spicy ahi bowl, but the mix of the flavors were good. Also loved the maki. Seriously don't let that sign fool you yes sushi is their their priority which they seem to have set that bar pretty decently high for this cute tiny nook that's directly across Kaimuki Community Park on Waialae. When you walk in it's smells absolutely wonderful I felt immediately wanting to know what it is but my focus is not the usual sushi rolls and nigiri of course I'm still searching for that spicy ahi poke bowl and this one is definitely spicy...finally! Not flaming hot but does absolutely bites you back to remind you what's in that bowl and is definitely saucy. They don't seem to offer the option of rice or veggie substitutions and the rice is al dente because it's the same sushi rice as I was able to taste the light touch of vinegar...not my cup of tea as I prefer plain white rice with a touch of dashi which was disappointing. For anyone that wants to do a one stop it's not only sushi but they have garlic Mayo Teri chicken, Beef gyudon, tempura, even udon so there are many other options including their lunch special which is 6 pieces nigiri (Ahi, Salmon, Tamago, Tako, Ebi and ika) mini poke bowl or 4 pcs California maki and miso soup. Online ordering was simple and fast. The food was ready pretty quickly. I ordered a dragon hand roll (unagi, crab avocado, and cucumber). It was really good. I would definitely get that again. I also tried the spicy ahi and shrimp tempura bowl. The spicy ahi wasn't too spicy. It had decent flavor, but I have had better. I did like that there is a layer of spinach under the ahi. The crunchy spicy ahi at Sushiya is one of my go to poke bowls in the area! I love how they add tempura for some extra crunch and flavor. Although parking can be tough sometimes due to limited space you are always able to find some nearby street parking. Udon even know how amazing this place is! I tried the Beef Udon and Crunchy Spicy Ahi. The beef udon is so flavorful! It must be the beef that they use, that provides an added flavor to the soup. And the noodles are thick and cooked to perfection. As for the crunchy spicy ahi, not as crunchy by the time I got home with my takeout but it was definitely good! I stopped in because it was in front of my car while pIcking up my Boston pizza. Looked interesting and kind of newly opened. Owner was at the door and was very nice and welcoming. Seemed like a real family operation with a child watching an iPad, and what seemed like relatives helping out. Couldn't tell who was the chef as the magic happens in the back. Got a spicy crunchy poke bowl. Can't give it a personal review because when I got home I was concentrating on my pizza. By the tIme I remembered the bowl, it was gone. The crooks that ate it said it was good. I liked the idea of tempura fried crunchies under the fish for texture. I did manage to drink down the miso soup before anyone noticed! Could be that they are new, but the place didn't have that heavy oily smell that some takeout sushi places have because of the tempura frying. That's a plus. Another plus is BYOB! Everytime I'm in Kaimuki, I love coming here for their spam hand rolls. They also now put them in those handroll wrappers so it keeps the nori crunchy. The handroll is flavored with a sauce on the rice and the spam which tastes so good. Bought some for the whole family, because I would never hear the end if I only bought one for myself. A nice Mom and Pop place that serves excellent sushi. Spent the Saturday checking out places in Kaimuki. Lots of cool shops and places to eat. We were hungry so we stopped at Sushiya for a quick sushi lunch. No indoor seating but there are two outdoor tables for seating. Our food was delicious. The spicy ahi was very orange in color and saucy but it tasted pretty good. I'm not a fan of al dente cooked rice but it still went well with the spicy ahi and nigiri. Since we love sushi we will likely return. read more

The food wasn't ready after ordering 25min ahead of time over the phone, but the guy packing our food was friendly so that made up for it. I think they should invest in boxes or something for to go orders since the containers were flimsy and we ended up spilling a little bit of the food. The beef udon was average and the sushi was okay. Under new ownership. This is a comparison review to the old Sushiya. I was so worried when I didn't see their usual "Open" sign lit up as usual. Thankfully, the previous owners' nephew took over, remodeled, and has almost the same layout and menu as before. There's a little more space to dine in and relax to music. It still smells like fresh paint. They take their usual care with their orders (it's not fast food!) and I was able to order one of my favorites, now an off-menu request: California roll with tobiko. I was kinda bummed that they didn't have my favorite Ikura nigiri or temaki roll. Hoping this review will help put it on the menu... *hint hint* I think the menu is more condensed... prices went up just a smidge but not a lot, and I'm happy to come here again.... especially if my Ikura favorites come back. read more

Umm. Did I go to the same place everyone else went to? The reviews looked promising and so did the pictures. Luckily I had some cash on hand as they were cash only here. The service was really friendly and there was a handful of parking in front - all of which was taken. I was lucky to grab street parking as it just opens up at 6pm. I opted for the dragon roll which had shrimp tempura in the inside and spicy ahi on top. The food itself was lacking in everything. The rice was terrible, the shrimp was a chewy texture. Maybe because it was cold? And the spicy ahi on top was frozen fresh. For this price and quality I could have went somewhere else and it would have been better. I don't think I'd come back here again. It looks way better than it tastes. This review is kinda tough because the people here are so nice and sweet, but the sushi...not so much. The unko working here was very kind and did a great job serving us. I ordered one of the platters of sushi because it was quite affordable. In fact, everything here was relatively cheap compared to other sushi places. The price comes with a price. You do give up quality because you are getting a great deal! Ultimately, you can tell the fish was previously frozen. The extra water you get from the defrosted water crystals changes the texture of the fish. Nowadays, it is hard to get good sushi without an arm and leg, but it is definitely worth it if you value quality sushi, like me. If you are looking for a cheap sushi place and don't care about the quality, this place is for you. Otherwise, spend the extra money for a more delicious experience. read more

Tried this place twice. The first time we ordered a full meal, Maki rolls and nigiri Ahi ($70 woth). This meal was disappointing. The fish was very fresh. However the rice was old, or tasted like it. Actually the rice was cold, and kind of hard as if it was yesterday's rice. Didn't want to make a snap judgment, so came back for a poke Bowl and ordered spicy Ahi. I'm a big fan of spicy ahi poke bowls, and they do a decent job here. The fish is very fresh, there was just the right amount of sauce and spiciness. However again the rice seems to be the problem. It was barely warm, and definitely tasted not fresh. Not sure how to describe it other than it seems like they're using older rice. In my quest to find the perfect poke bowl, I enjoyed the spicy Ahi here and am glad I came. But the rice killed it for me (again). If the rice was better, then this would definitely be a four-star poke bowl, and perhaps even nigiri and Maki rolls. Definitely a decent poke bowl, and worth trying, but I don't think I would come back because of the rice. read more

Love this place! Very fresh and inexpensive. Everything is made for you right after you order. It appears to be run by a couple with the man out front and the woman preparing the food, although I think the man assists. Chirashi is breathtakingly beautiful. Temaki are all delicious and inexpensive. Get at least two (three would be better) Always service with a smile. read more
