Charming, quiet, and clean, with DELICIOUS homemade food and snacks, including gluten-free items and brown rice. Very reasonably priced menu. There are ample plugs, free wi-fi, natural light, and comfortable seats. The woman who runs it (I assume her name is Nina) is really sweet, too. It was pretty quiet when I was in there, but it might have been the time of day. Hmm maybe 3.5 stars. A small hole in the wall place that's a one-woman show. She will take your order, ring you up (she prefers cash and you can pay after you eat), make your food, and serve you. Tried the lentil soup, tofu pesto, and veggie sandwich. Also had to have an iced homemade chai latte (no sugar added so I made it a little bit tastier with some simple syrup). Wasn't the best chai I ever had even though it was homemade. The food was basic. Not anything spectacular and not huge portions, but good. The worst Cesar salad ever. I don't care that it's not her specialty. If you aren't good at a menu item, don't waste your money and my time on it. The prices they post on the internet are significantly higher than what is found in store. Salads were posted at 4.95, but in store the Cesar jumped to 6.95 (without chicken). The extra $2 is for all the excessive dressing that it gets doused in. It definitely didn't go towards the to go box, because she packed it with a paper plate and some foil. And yes that's rice included. I asked for bread, but got rice because she straight up wasn't paying attention. This was the once and only time I will be going. There are waaaaaaay too many other places that do great food priced appropriately near by. Also, the lady is hella not aunty status. Did she give you a free Chai for that? Yesterday 3/24, my daughter and I were looking for a place for a quick bite after a meeting and before heading home. My phone suggested, 4 Star, Nina's Café. Well, it is no where near a 4 star café. It posted as American cuisine, which we thought burgers, fries, etc. Mostly was what I would call food with curry, hummus, etc. But they did have a grilled cheese so we ordered that for her, me and my grandson. The sandwiches were just okay. They only had, maybe, 1 slice of mozzarella cheese on them which didn't even cover the bread. We also ordered 3 drinks, a canned soda, a canned juice and an iced tea. The total for this not so good meal was $31. Way too much! The place was also a mess. Very unkempt, not clean by any means and just generally not nice. We will never go back and recommend for no one else to go their either. Sorry! read more

Yesterday was extremely chilly in Berkeley. Walking into Nina's for the first time, I was immediately met with the amazing smells from her kitchen, a bright smile, and a "hello, my friend". Good start. I ordered a tuna melt sandwich and a bowl of dahl soup. I've had many, many of both over the years and these were delicious and well spiced, not to mention just the right thing for an autumn day. So glad I found this place. read more

Stopped by on a whim because my fiance and I wanted a snack before our lunch reservation. We got a breakfast burrito with chorizo, and it was honestly the best breakfast burrito we've ever had. Delicious flavors with just the right degree of heat (from the homemade sauce or salsa), perfect balance of textures and ingredients (avocado!), and served with a couple apple slices. I have been going to Nina's for about a year now - breakfast, lunch, dinner, and nearly everyday. I have had many different meals from her kitchen, all are outstanding, fresh ingredients, unique recipes! My favorite has to be the veggie curry bowl, which when served looks more like a colorful salad with avocado, cucumber, different types of peppers, on top of a medium to extra spicy curry (catered to your liking). She has breakfast burritos, mexican burritos, frittata, soup, hardboiled eggs to go, sandwiches, and more. Lots to choose from. The coffee is excellent and is served till 1pm. Free wifi with purchase and for about $7-10 you can get a custom cooked meal by a very kind hearted woman. read more

I really cannot say enough good things about Nina's. I work in the Activspace complex, and I swear I would starve to death without her. She's like our mom. Customer service like I have never experienced before. She truly takes care of the customer and refuses tips. Recognizes anyone who has been in more than a couple of times and greets you like an old friend. Asks about your work/day/etc. Truly nice, sweet, and genuine woman. She loves what she does, and just wants you to enjoy her food and tell your friends. On to the food: SOUP! Her soups are to die for. Ask for the spicy relish. Her pickled jalapenos are amazing. Everything is fresh, beautifully presented, and affordable. The veggie samosas and breakfast pastries are also delicious. Her specials are outstanding. I went in today and her daily special was a sweet curry chicken. Included: a thigh and leg so perfectly seasoned and cooked that it literally fell off the bone and was full of moisture and flavor. Came with a side of perfectly cooked and seasoned rice and a fresh salad with lemon wedge for garnish. $11? Steal. Nina herself makes sure I am happy and my tummy is satisfied with delicious treats and coffee. She is quite a cook and makes many international dishes from scratch including Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, curry and American. Nina's Cafe review. I am seriously glad I found this hidden gem. It's a-one-of-a-kind place you only find in the Bay Area, and no one can quite duplicate. It's a mix of a colorful Internet cafe, and your auntie's kitchen table. The hipsters have not yet discovered it (except me of course) so it's still very chill and roomy. As you walk in the door a gentle wiff of Indian spices serves as a pleasant greeting. Don't be intimidated, the bagels, sandwiches, salads you would find at a casual cafe are here. But if you want to go a bit Indian, you totally can. An ADORABLE lady offers you her homemade authentic Chai tea (Do you dare try it unsweetened? Or will you add sugar? Either way it's pretty thick with home ground ingredients.) As I sit here in the comfortable cushy seats, using the wifi, I can't get over the eclectic mishmash of art, children's books, magazines, knickknacks, and even a Russian doll. Somehow this place feels like I am part of the family, yet the hidden location makes me feel like my privacy is respected. I guess it's everything I need in terms of comfort. This place is horrid. Nina leaves for months on end and thinks by freezing food it's still ok to sell. She has sold moldy muffins many times to friends of mine. The over priced drinks are ridiculous. I've had coffee there maybe 3 times.. And every time she ask if you want fresh cream or milk. It always curdles , there is no 1/2 and 1/2 at the condo section and also I've noticed that she never washes the milk pot. I bought candy bars there that the chocolate is white and dusty!. The food is not fresh and sits around unwrapped. Nina listen up!... Just because you buy your muffins at Costco does not means they last forever!... Removing one moldy muffin from the package and selling the others is not right!.. THROW THEM AWAY!.. read more

Most of the time, I look for unusual ingredients or an interesting twist on something I know well, or perhaps taking perfection to a level I didn't know exists.
