This is the best sushi restaurant I've had in Iowa. The service is amazing. I go there every single week, and they are always on point. This was our second time at Ninja and we have continuously enjoyed the food. We ordered the chicken katsu which was absolutely delicious, and not dry at all. The dynamite volcano sushi was great, and very filling. Ninja has one of the freshest sushi in the whole metro. The tonkatsu ramen was also good, but lacked a little in flavor, but still enjoyed. We also had miso soup- a classic, edamame- a nice addition to any meal, and the steamed bao buns, which was probably our least favorite. The dish was just a bit bland. The ambiance of the restaurant is super spacious and great service with not much wait time. The owners are really nice. I've ordered out and ate in at Ninja several times. Been meaning to leave a review, just now getting around to it. I had one strange and disorderly experience while ordering out (it was made worse because my partner was sick that day and I intended to get soup for him). The person who rang up my order actually ran my card for the wrong order. They requested I come back, I just called once I got home to give them my card to refund and re-ring for the correct order. Then, I discovered my soup was not in the order after we were off the phone. So, I ended up having to drive back. That was a mess. But, mistakes happen. The food was still decent just wish I didn't have to make extra trips. :) Their fish variety could be better but it's Iowa so I understand on limited selections. What they do have is decent and fresh enough. When I'm craving sashimi, this is my spot; it's also five minutes drive from home. They're now serving bubble tea -- which I didn't try in my recent visit but plan to have it eventually. They also have fresh wasabi (up charged), but worth it because I haven't found a spot with fresh wasabi in the metro. So this is a new restaurant in the Waukee area and I wanted to try it because I love a good sushi roll. I've ordered take out from them three times now and it's legit! The sushi is amazing although I've only tried the shrimp tempura and eel avocado rolls, they both were delicious! Also, I've tried the crab Rangoon which is very light and flaky, good flavor inside. The ambiance is great. It is hip and cool. The service is one point and the food is fresh and delicious. I haven't had a bad meal there ever. There wasn't many sushi spots in Des Moines a decade ago. So I'm really glad new ones like Ninja are popping up, especially in areas as far west as Waukee. For a sushi spot that just opened, it was pretty busy for a Friday night. The ambiance is really refreshing and bright. It's not very dark or moody like some kinda steakhouse or dive bar. The wait staff are really quick to seat you and they're awesome with service. The appetizers were great, I had the takoyaki and dynamite mussels. I honestly was so hungry I forgot to take a picture. Trust me when I say the plating is Instagram sexy. Obviously, I had to try the sushi and sashimi. The fish was super fresh and clean tasting. Chilled perfectly and the texture was firm like its supposed to be. The salmon and yellowtail do not disappoint. The prices were about what you'd expect, not terribly pricey and the menu had some under $20 set dinner options. The menu is pretty extensive. (This will be long, but hopefully helpful) I have both ordered for delivery (DoorDash) and eaten in the restaurant and both were great experiences! The food is delicious, great portions, fresh, highly recommend! The restaurant is small (in a cozy way, not a cramped way), with regular tables, high top tables, booths and bar/sushi bar seating. Very clean, lots of natural lighting, cute simple decor. Service was great, they give you a good amount of time to look and eat without checking in every 10 minutes - nothing wrong with that, I've been a server/bar tender/hostess many times so attentive service is great! I know a lot of people don't like being "bothered" frequently during the meal, so if that's your preference they give you plenty of space to enjoy your food and conversation. When I ordered delivery ( I didn't get a photo because I was starving) I tried the Kimchi Seafood Soup, side of fried rice, California and Red Dragon rolls. *Everything* was so tasty and fresh. I can't sing the praises of the Kimchi soup enough. If you like Korean food, you will love this. When I try new sushi and/or Asian restaurants I try the basics (fried rice/Cali Roll) so I can get an idea of flavors and freshness because those are usually staple menu items. Fried rice had great flavor and texture on it's own and was even still great the next day. Cali Roll was fantastic as well. You might think a basic Cali Roll is difficult to mess up, but I have had some terrible basic rolls before (the rice is important, as most know). This was not one of them. I would have happily eaten 3 more of these. The Red Dragon roll was a great specialty roll. The size, flavors, and freshness were impressive. Especially if you like spicier rolls. The food from my dine-in experience (pictured) was just as impressive. You almost never see cold noodles on Japanese menus (In Iowa, anyway?) so I was stoked to see this as an option. The noodles are very similar to udon (thick, slippery, chewy) which isn't my favorite, but that's just my personal noodle preference. It was still amazing! It comes with lots of veggies/toppings and the flavored egg was 10/10. I asked for additional kimchi which was a large portion on the side. I also was asked if I wanted it spicy or not spicy. I asked for spicy, and the additional spicy sauce came on the side, which is such a top tier move. You can always add more, but if you don't love it you aren't committed to it. The sauce had a lovely sesame, light fresh vinegar flavor (if you like the sesame dressings at other Japanese restaurants you will love this). The spicy garlic edamame is out of this world. The classic garlic, soy, butter flavor was incredible and made even better by adding the spicy option (actually spicy for those who have a higher tolerance) The Spicy 2in1 roll was delicious, but if you have a smaller mouth it's a lot for one bite, so be prepared for chipmunk cheeks (I mean this in a good way)! They have options for freshly pressed juices, smoothies, and boba teas - we ended up being too full to get these but their options looked so good! I will definitely be trying these next time. Side notes - lots of parking options and relatively easy location to find. 10/10 enjoyable - will be back! read more
