Very disappointing experience. We paid approximately $600 for professional lice treatment and follow-up checks. The staff did not seem experienced or thorough, and despite being told we were clear--including after a full comb-out only 10 days later--we discovered live lice on all three family members less than three weeks after treatment and had to undergo the entire treatment process again elsewhere. Ultimately, we spent $600 at Nit Pixies and had to pay for treatment all over again at a different place a few days later. When I raised my concerns, the owner refused a refund and told me not to return to her salons. I would not recommend this service. Go to a place where they have a 30 day guarantee like Lice Clinic. read more

I wasn't given any explanation about the process, and after checking me in, they rushed through the service in about five minutes without shampooing my hair or offering any options. It felt like they just took my money without providing anything helpful or necessary. You're better off buying the kit somewhere else. The owner or manager was extremely rude, and I was shocked at how dismissive she was when I tried to share my experience. I had a very disappointing experience at the Woodminster location this morning. My son was seen promptly at 9:30 am, and his check took less than 10 minutes, with no lice found. As soon as we arrived, I had asked if I could also be seen, but the employee said no. After my son's check, at 9:45, I asked again if I could be seen, and the employee claimed the next appointment was in 5 minutes, so I decided to wait. However, instead of checking me, she spent about 5 minutes cleaning up and then told me she had to take a "break." She excused herself to the back to be on the phone, which I found unprofessional, especially since we were the first customers of the day. She had ample time between 9:45 and 10:10 to see me but chose not to, despite the fact that I have short hair (only goes a little below my chin) and the check would've taken only about 10 minutes. As a customer, I found this frustrating, particularly because I may have lice (my daughter had it and was sleeping in my bed), and it would've made sense to be checked. From a business standpoint, this was a missed opportunity for the company to offer a necessary service and make money, but I will now take my business elsewhere. The employee working this morning (short blondish hair, glasses) was rude and provided poor customer service. We live 5 minutes away but won't be returning, which is unfortunate. I brought in 2 very nervous and fidgety kids. A 2 year old and an 8 year old. They were extremely patient with both and even had books, snacks, and a tablet to keep them entertained! They also were very sweet during our follow up check up, my 8 year old wasn't scheduled to come but she wanted to come just to see them! On these 2 days we experienced great service... I am really disappointed with this service. We have been having a hard time getting the lice to completely be gone from our daughter's hair. We had already tried everything - over the counter lice shampoos and nit picking with the metal comb. We came in hoping that we would have some level of additional treatment which would prevent return. Instead, she just picked out my daughter's hair for 20 minutes, said all the lice were gone, and put in a natural "tea tree oil treatment" and told us to shampoo it at home. Didn't even check after to see if there were lice. They were confident there would be no more lice and said that any lice that were seen after time would be a "new infestation" which is, frankly, BS. Lo and behold, about a week later, and the lice and nits are still active in her hair. We have beaten back this problem many times without being completely lice free. Nit Pixies did not help us AT ALL. They charged a RIDICULOUS amount ($130!!) for spending very little time and using a treatment that didn't work. And they were no more thorough than I was. I would definitely look for a better place to go next time. FYI, I also had my hair looked at to see if I have lice, and they charged like $90 for about 15 minutes. She didn't even look through my whole head, only a few portions and said that it wasn't lice. I really cannot recommend this place to anyone. I'm very disappointed - after paying $220! read more

Angie and Kanye at the Oakland Woodminster location were absolutely what my family needed! My daughter especially was very nervous about going in and getting picked over, and Kanye was kind, gentle, and personable with her (she's 9). Super professional. Angie worked on the grownups, and she was excellent and explaining everything that was happening, how their treatments work, and more. The place was clean and pleasant. I should mention that when I got the call from school, I completely panicked; going into NitPixies totally calmed me down, and I came out feeling like I could handle it (and I did). When I first scheduled at Nit Pixies I didn't know much about lice and didn't want to believe we had it. The young woman who screened us was very kind and did a decent job nit combing my son's and my hair and applying tea tree oil. The first day I spent about $350 on treatments, tip and a kit for home and was told to return in 2-3 days for repeat treatment. In the interim I researched lice and became wary of the claim that the tea tree oil would kill the nits. I scanned a variety of scientific literature and from what I can tell, tea tree oil DOES NOT kill nits, it may kill some live lice but mostly it deters lice. Thus, the benefit of the visit was the nit comb out more than anything, but with thick curly hair I was guaranteed to need multiple treatments (at $135 each, plus tax, tip, and "fair wage" fee). After additional research, I found a clinic that does a heat treatment (evidence based to kill nits), followed by dimethicone oil (safe and evidence based to kill lice), and went there for both of our rechecks. At the rechecks we both were still clearly infested, suggesting the initial comb outs had missed a lot of nits... so we both got retreated and spent another $400... because if a single live nit is left, it will become a full infestation. Bottom line: Nit Pixies helped us when I was panicked, and they were very nice, but I ended up ultimately spending an unnecessary $350 there because I had not fully researched lice eradication. As an addendum, the follow up check at a different clinic two days later found 70 ish nits on both myself and my son... those were not all laid in 2 days, so they were missed on the first and very expensive comb out we had at Nit Pixies. read more

Beyond frustrated, unfortunately, with this business. Took my child here to get lice removal treatment for $130. They were very friendly and courteous with my child. But within two days, the lice were back. The website promises that NitPixies will "stand by" their services. But when I called, I learned that "stand by" means please come pay us again and again until the lice are gone. Other places in Berkeley offer a 30 day guarantee. I recommend supporting a business that will support you when the treatment fails to eliminate the problem. read more

My daughter's school notified my today at about 2pm that she had lice. I called Nit Pixies and they were super flexible about getting her in for an appointment right away for treatment, even moving it from 2:30pm to 3:00pm when I realized I wasn't going to make it. It took about a 20 minute check to realize that my daughter's school was wrong and that she was lice free. The manager is rude and sarcastic. She greeted me by looking down on her papers and sarcastically asked what brought me in to the store. After looking at me, she said she wouldn't work on me because my hair was too greasy. My hair hasn't changed in years and I had gone to a lice removal place in San Francisco a year ago after getting lice from my daughter. They never said anything about my hair. Desperate because it was my day off and I couldn't make the trip to SF, I asked that she work on me anyway. She told me to degrease my hair with Dawn dish soap! I don't know why I did it, I guess out of desperation, but I went home and washed my hair with tons of Dawn dish soap and went back to a rescheduled appointment. At this point the manager was gone and another woman was working. She told me my hair was too greasy and not to be surprised if I still had lice after she was done. I told her that at Hair Fairies in SF they had no problems with my hair and they did an excellent job! She then said they remove lice differently. The hair has to be dry and they comb out with a lice comb only. At Hair Fairies, they did it dry, conditioned, then used comb, shampooed and then dried and nit picked. I was surprised all they did was brush out with the comb on dry hair! There was no way they could ever work on my children's curly and kinky mixed hair or any other hair texture that doesn't do well when combed dry! Since I knew my hair could take the nit comb dry, I told her to go for it. She very roughly combed my hair with the comb. She scraped my scalp harshly and yanked my hair hard. She worked on me five minutes tops and said she was done. She then said I had to pay 100 dollars for the hour! I asked her how could she be done if she only worked on my hair for five minutes. She said she only took out two eggs and found nothing more and that my hair was too greasy so if anything was in my hair, it slid away. I tried to fight it but she said she was a professional and knew what she was doing. I paid the money and left feeling disappointed and angry for devoting my whole day to this place and giving then business. Please don't make the same mistake I made. Go to Hair Fairies in SF for the same price and much better customer service. Or go to any other lice removal place but not this one! This place has rude, lazy and racist workers who do a terrible job at taking out lice! I found a bug in my hair when I went home and knew that five minutes was nothing for what I paid. read more

Given that this was my first encounter with the pesky little critters, I needed some sound advice on how to get rid of them After a quick online search, I found there were really only a few options: buy an over-the-counter pesticide (Nix or RID) and do it yourself; try one of the homeopathic remedies offered online; or seek the help of an experienced professional who knows what they are doing. Because there were so many conflicting opinions about what worked and what didn't, I opted for professional guidance and called Nit Pixies. They were referred by our school. A nice health perk about Nit Pixies is they don't use toxic chemicals during their extraction process. Their treatment begins with a fine-tooth combing to remove any lice and nits that are attached to the hair. That's followed with a 20 minute essential oil treatment that kills off any lingering bugs that may have survived the manual combing. Depending on the level of infestation, the whole treatment takes about an hour. When they are finished your scalp will feel like a million bucks. The technicians are truly professional in every sense of the word. They are meticulous when combing out your hair, offering the same level of detail that you might expect if they were treating one of their own family members. While sitting through the delousing process they will give you a comprehensive education on how to prevent reinfestation. Because newly laid microscopic eggs cannot be removed with the initial salon treatment - WHICH THEY TELL YOU UP FRONT, it is essential to follow their aftercare instructions to the letter if you want to prevent a recurrence. While their process may not be perfect, it's as close as you will find when it comes to the business of lice eradication. From a cost standpoint, contracting lice can be an expensive proposition, both in terms of time and money. It's not something you want to go through more than once if you can help it. Even with the most diligent aftercare it's possible that you may miss a nit or two. For this reason I would recommend going back five days after the initial treatment to ensure your scalp is nit-free. If you ever find yourself having to deal with a lice infestation, especially if you are a first-timer like I was, please do your family and school a favor by calling Nit Pixies to help guide you through the eradication process. The money you spend will be well worth it. These folks are thorough and trustworthy. You and your family will not only leave with a clean scalp, you will also be armed with knowledge of how to prevent a future recurrence. Lastly, I believe the negative reviews that were posted on Yelp about this particular Nit Pixies location were from people who either didn't follow the aftercare instructions and then experienced a reinfestation, or they are just - excuse the pun, nit-picking over minutiae. You cannot be lazy about the aftercare, or in a few weeks you will be back to square one having to deal with this nightmare all over again. read more
