I am really disappointed with this service. We have been having a hard time getting the lice to completely be gone from our daughter's hair. We had already tried everything - over the counter lice shampoos and nit picking with the metal comb. We came in hoping that we would have some level of additional treatment which would prevent return. Instead, she just picked out my daughter's hair for 20 minutes, said all the lice were gone, and put in a natural "tea tree oil treatment" and told us to shampoo it at home. Didn't even check after to see if there were lice. They were confident there would be no more lice and said that any lice that were seen after time would be a "new infestation" which is, frankly, BS. Lo and behold, about a week later, and the lice and nits are still active in her hair. We have beaten back this problem many times without being completely lice free. Nit Pixies did not help us AT ALL. They charged a RIDICULOUS amount ($130!!) for spending very little time and using a treatment that didn't work. And they were no more thorough than I was. I would definitely look for a better place to go next time. FYI, I also had my hair looked at to see if I have lice, and they charged like $90 for about 15 minutes. She didn't even look through my whole head, only a few portions and said that it wasn't lice. I really cannot recommend this place to anyone. I'm very disappointed - after paying $220! read more

My daughter especially was very nervous about going in and getting picked over, and Kanye was kind, gentle, and personable with her (she's 9). Super professional. Angie worked on the grownups, and she was excellent and explaining everything that was happening, how their treatments work, and more. The place was clean and pleasant. I should mention that when I got the call from school, I completely panicked; going into NitPixies totally calmed me down, and I came out feeling like I could handle it (and I did). When I first scheduled at Nit Pixies I didn't know much about lice and didn't want to believe we had it. The young woman who screened us was very kind and did a decent job nit combing my son's and my hair and applying tea tree oil. The first day I spent about $350 on treatments, tip and a kit for home and was told to return in 2-3 days for repeat treatment. In the interim I researched lice and became wary of the claim that the tea tree oil would kill the nits. I scanned a variety of scientific literature and from what I can tell, tea tree oil DOES NOT kill nits, it may kill some live lice but mostly it deters lice. Thus, the benefit of the visit was the nit comb out more than anything, but with thick curly hair I was guaranteed to need multiple treatments (at $135 each, plus tax, tip, and "fair wage" fee). After additional research, I found a clinic that does a heat treatment (evidence based to kill nits), followed by dimethicone oil (safe and evidence based to kill lice), and went there for both of our rechecks. At the rechecks we both were still clearly infested, suggesting the initial comb outs had missed a lot of nits... so we both got retreated and spent another $400... because if a single live nit is left, it will become a full infestation. Bottom line: Nit Pixies helped us when I was panicked, and they were very nice, but I ended up ultimately spending an unnecessary $350 there because I had not fully researched lice eradication. As an addendum, the follow up check at a different clinic two days later found 70 ish nits on both myself and my son... those were not all laid in 2 days, so they were missed on the first and very expensive comb out we had at Nit Pixies. read more

But within two days, the lice were back. The website promises that NitPixies will "stand by" their services. But when I called, I learned that "stand by" means please come pay us again and again until the lice are gone. Other places in Berkeley offer a 30 day guarantee. The manager is rude and sarcastic. She greeted me by looking down on her papers and sarcastically asked what brought me in to the store. After looking at me, she said she wouldn't work on me because my hair was too greasy. My hair hasn't changed in years and I had gone to a lice removal place in San Francisco a year ago after getting lice from my daughter. They never said anything about my hair. Desperate because it was my day off and I couldn't make the trip to SF, I asked that she work on me anyway. She told me to degrease my hair with Dawn dish soap! I don't know why I did it, I guess out of desperation, but I went home and washed my hair with tons of Dawn dish soap and went back to a rescheduled appointment. At this point the manager was gone and another woman was working. She told me my hair was too greasy and not to be surprised if I still had lice after she was done. I told her that at Hair Fairies in SF they had no problems with my hair and they did an excellent job! She then said they remove lice differently. The hair has to be dry and they comb out with a lice comb only. At Hair Fairies, they did it dry, conditioned, then used comb, shampooed and then dried and nit picked. I was surprised all they did was brush out with the comb on dry hair! There was no way they could ever work on my children's curly and kinky mixed hair or any other hair texture that doesn't do well when combed dry! Since I knew my hair could take the nit comb dry, I told her to go for it. She very roughly combed my hair with the comb. She scraped my scalp harshly and yanked my hair hard. She worked on me five minutes tops and said she was done. She then said I had to pay 100 dollars for the hour! I asked her how could she be done if she only worked on my hair for five minutes. She said she only took out two eggs and found nothing more and that my hair was too greasy so if anything was in my hair, it slid away. I tried to fight it but she said she was a professional and knew what she was doing. I paid the money and left feeling disappointed and angry for devoting my whole day to this place and giving then business. Please don't make the same mistake I made. Go to Hair Fairies in SF for the same price and much better customer service. Or go to any other lice removal place but not this one! A nice health perk about Nit Pixies is they don't use toxic chemicals during their extraction process. Their treatment begins with a fine-tooth combing to remove any lice and nits that are attached to the hair. That's followed with a 20 minute essential oil treatment that kills off any lingering bugs that may have survived the manual combing. Depending on the level of infestation, the whole treatment takes about an hour. When they are finished your scalp will feel like a million bucks. The technicians are truly professional in every sense of the word. They are meticulous when combing out your hair, offering the same level of detail that you might expect if they were treating one of their own family members. While sitting through the delousing process they will give you a comprehensive education on how to prevent reinfestation. Lastly, I believe the negative reviews that were posted on Yelp about this particular Nit Pixies location were from people who either didn't follow the aftercare instructions and then experienced a reinfestation, or they are just - excuse the pun, nit-picking over minutiae. Nit Pixies found a spot for our most severe case right away, treated the rest of us too and then had the rest of us come back for the comb out part at a time convenient for everyone. The treatments and comb outs were effective and comprehensive. We purchased the best lice comb and a few supplies for follow up. We received a set of instructions and were allowed to watch and learn the combing process. Overall, very happy with the service.
