Dr Mertz' office in Longmont is very modern and the staff professional. He listens well and has empathy for his dental patients like myself who may have extreme anxiety before & during treatment . There is never a rushed feeling during treatment -he lets the novocaine do its job before drilling . He uses nitrous oxide to help me relax . He explains what he is doing & he & his assistant praise me too during the procedure which gives me confidence . During long procedures he makes sure that I get a bathroom break . I don't dread getting dental work like I used to !

I went in for an exam, for an implant and after which, was given a referral to an oral surgeon. I questioned why that they made the initial appointment, a week out and charged for an emergent exam, as well as didn't suggest to go to an oral surgeon. 500.00 for the appointment, that did little for the problem, outside of profiting the dental practice. I have called my insurance carrier to make a formal complaint, also I called Molly Perra at the Colorado Dental Association, and will file a written complaint. I would have written BBB, however Mertz is not a member, understandable so. There should be no excuse for fraudulent, unethical practices, especially when dentistry is a needed service.

I tried one that was close by that I could access on my own by bus, but after having a great first visit with the younger dentist there, I returned to discover that he had left when the practice was sold. I had really wanted a multi dentist practice so that if needed on short notice there would be someone available. My long time dentist was a solo practitioner and did not work full time. Through all of this, I had a recommendation for North Boulder Dental which only missed in the self transportation factor and in taking my insurance. After talking to them on the phone, I was assured that they would process my insurance claim but I would pay at point of service and the reimbursement from the insurance would come directly to me. It was close enough to my home that I was sure I could get a ride as the bus I normally use does not go that way. It was a wonderful decision. I don't think in my whole life I had ever had such a wonderful experience in a dental office. I chose a dentist that a friend recommended from their team of 4-6 dentists on staff. They are open 5 days a week which none of the previous offices I had used, did. They had been 4 or under. I was able to get a date and time that worked easily for me. They had me pre-register on their website so that they could save time on arrival, know my dental and medical history and gather my previous dental records from the previous practice. They sent gentle reminders for arrival. When I arrived, I found a clean, attractive and comfortable waiting area, better than any previous situation. Staff greeted me immediately. I was taken on time. I met the dentist, Dr. Nielsen and her assistant, we chatted a little to get familiar with expectations and they went right to work on an initial exam. Most of my teeth were fine, just a few gum issues to address. No cavities, no infections. As I have a serious chronic disease, these are critical assessments. I then proceeded to the hygienist who performed the most thorough but gentle cleaning in my life. This is important as I bleed easily because of my medical condition. Before leaving, I made my appointment for my next cleaning in 6 months. I paid and left, confident it was the right choice.

In fact, if I had been informed that my dentist was no longer here before I came in last month, I would have cancelled my appointment and made other arrangements for a new dentist in a group. I called the group I had contacted when making my choice last summer and asked to get an appointment with them for my next cleaning. It is not much farther away, but I will not be able make a bus connection to it as I had this one. But close enough to get a friend ride or a ride share. I also noticed when I called to cancel the next appointment that they are still using the recorded message that both dentists are available and gave emergency numbers for both. That was very misleading also. I want to reiterate that the glowing reviews on Yelp from past years do not represent the current status of this practice. I did not see any of the former staff last month. It's really a shame.

I don't usually write negative reviews. As a business owner, I understand that people can have…read morenegative experiences sometimes and our businesses' reputations are vital to our livelihood. However, I have given this practice several days now to follow up and attempt to respond to my concerns and they have not. I went in for an initial appt and was not clearly informed that I would not have a cleaning. They told me it would be $320 out of pocket for the first appt including full xrays (they never asked if I had xrays done in the last year or if I wanted them done - looking back I would have gotten some sent from my last dentist). They gave me a tour of their many exam rooms and only one dentist - which made me question the quality of their care. The hygienist was struggling with equipment that was not working properly and after explaining that I have a phobia of vomitting and don't like feeling like I may gag, it took a solid 45 minutes of xrays to get it done. She was doing the best she could but it was a really awful circumstance and she was struggling to keep her cool. There was no problem solving or attempt to move me to a different room. The dentist was informed of the issue and seemed only minimally interested in noticing it or fixing it. Next the dentist came in and roughly pushed his fingers into my mouth attempting to put his finger down my throat despite my saying I did not like or want him to do that. He didn't explain why he needed to do so (I have never had a dentist do this before) and stated he would do it when I wasn't paying attention. He then proceeded to quiz me about anxiety and seemed to be making some judgments about what was wrong with me and handed me some information about a tedx talk but didn't share what it was about or how he felt it related to me. Later I went home and watched it and it referred to people with tongue issues, breastfeeding, posture, swallowing and snoring, which I do not relate to AT ALL. I am not sure what he felt my problem was - I asked but he seemed to have his own agenda hidden in his mind which he did not communicate to me. I also didn't ask for support with anxiety (I am a psychotherapist and am clear and comfortable with the symptoms I experience). It was clear he needed to feel intelligent but failed to get to know me before diagnosing me with issues that were out of his scope of practice. It was super judgey and condescending. The lack of clarity was confusing as well. Then they ushered me to the front and said I would come back for a cleaning. When I explained to them that I didn't have clarity that I wouldn't get a cleaning, I got some defensiveness and some apologies. I explained that I felt swindled into their "membership plan" bc I had just paid $320 and didn't even get my teeth cleaned, just a horrid experience. Financially, it would have made sense to sign up for that deal, now that I had already sunk $320 into my care there, but I didn't want to return and felt I had just wasted a bunch of time and money. I feel like you should be able to consult with a dentist first before feeling like you are committed. This dentist and system made me feel I had no choice - no voice or say. I asked to speak to the dentist or someone and by the time they finished loudly sharing my concerns in the back office and finally returned to touch base with me 10 minutes later, I was crying. I explained that I didn't have the emotional bandwidth to discuss it in the office right then and there. The dentist said he wanted to resolve it and I said I just needed to leave at that point. They didn't offer to reduce or waive my fee, just let me go ahead and pay in full and leave crying. I would have expected that if they really cared to resolve the issues, they could understand that I was too overwhelmed to talk in that moment and that they should follow up by phone or email later that day or the next day. I feel like this dentist is focused more on making money and feeling valid as an expert than he is in his integrity and care of patients as a dentist. Oh - and they use business sales tactics to gain 5 star reviews.
