Metropark station is part of the NJT Northeast Corridor Rail Line. In addition to the NJT rail, this station provides NJT bus service as well as Amtrak service. I used Metropark to take an Amtrak train to PA. This is a larger station compared to some of the other ones that I used on my trip. The station is manned and the waiting area is a decent size. If you need to purchase a ticket, you can do so at the machines or at the ticket window. The staff was very nice and helpful in directing me to the correct platform. The station has an elevator (which came in handy since I had a large suitcase) and is located not too far from the lobby area. The walkway from the lobby to the elevator is covered. Metropark has two large parking garages. The west garage was pretty packed, but there was plenty of parking in the east garage (probably because it's further away from the train platform). I'm not sure what the parking rates are, however the first hour was free. read more

I don't mind the station, but Amtrak's reliability is extremely poor. At least one out of three times I ride, they indicate a few minutes late, which ends up being more or less a two hour delay. This is just ridiculous. And in tonight's case, there seems to be no air conditioning and the train is at least 80-degrees inside. read more

Large station about 30min from NYC. A lot of Amtrak commuters to the city/Boston or down to Philly/DC here, too. Big parking decks with signs showing how many open spots on a level but fairly regulated driving directions to avoid traffic moving out of pattern. 3rd level connects directly to the platform level. The walkway under to the southbound side has a bit of construction; they need a few more of these pathways at the station to avoid walking a long distance (3 of the passages would be better). The longer you park, the more expensive, but overall convenient to the Garden State Parkway. read more

This is a great train station. Super easy to get to, parking lot and garage is plentiful, very close and easy to access. There's a Dunkin' Donuts and a public restroom that's kept clean. 1 elevator is available but is slow but big enough to hold several people. I like this station because of its easy access and layout. read more

It's the only or best way to get to NY .. extremely crowded in weekdays .. parking and going out of parking is such a headache. Not because it is slow, but the guy at the back of u tail gates or honks at you, even if u are going at the corrrect speed . There are also folks using wrong ways to get out quickly which is unacceptable.. I never leave way for wrong route drivers .. apart from that they have a good cafe, coffee, and 20 min parking spaces which are all awesome . When coming back from NY to Metropark, there is only one way out and it becomes a chaos where people push others to get out .. sorry state :( because of this I see youngsters battling for elevator and many old people have to wait for the next elevator ! In any case this is the only way to go to NY and we can't crib more on Metropark :( read more

After being delayed 2 hours and 40 minutes, NJ Transit did not show our train on the monitor, nor did they announce it.

We started our journey to NYC via the Metropark station. We booked two roundtrip tickets ($43 for two people) into the city. Once boarded, we were able to find seats right away. The train station is easy and convenient for those that are in the Central Jersey area. They have a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone and plenty of parking for people to park and ride into the city. The overall commute took about 1.5 from Metropark and into Times Square. read more

I was in the area and used this station to get to NYC. It was a nice day so I didn't mind sitting outside waiting for the train. It seemed like the enclosed areas you would sit in during the winter months were small. The station was clean. No one was begging for money or singing songs asking for a quarter. I did not use the parking area so I cannot comment on it. read more

This is one of my favorite train stations to take an NJT train to NYC. It has 2 huge parking garages and 1 open parking area. When I'd called to check ahead, if it would be difficult to find a parking spot during a weekday, the attendant told me they always have spots available. And if there is ever a difficulty, he said to call the same number and someone will come over to assist with parking. That is good customer service! There are several kiosks to pay for parking. As far as train tickets go, there are several self ticketing machines. There also is a ticket counter inside which is open during regular hours. Round trip tickets to Penn Station are $19.25 during weekday and $22 during weekends. The platforms are clean. The frequency of trains is excellent and there are always empty seats in the train. Finding empty seats is less of a chance from Newark or Secaucus. Of course it also depends on what time you are taking the train. The only complaint I have is with the bathrooms. Many a times they run out of paper. I also do not think they are cleaned regularly. read more

Train fare can only be purchased on the ground level, from either inside the station waiting area or the NJT kiosks outside. Platforms do not have ticketing machines. Wells Fargo ATM here sometimes runs out of cash. The single-occupancy restrooms are as gross as Penn Station's, but without the hobos. Parking in the parking garage here is a real kick in the pants--any time, any day. I used to spend more time scavenging for a parking space in the morning, relocating that same space in the evening, then waiting in line to drive out of the station onto Wood Avenue than I did actually driving here from home. Weekends are only slightly better. Fortunately, parking availability here is actually better than at the Metuchen or at Edison stations. read more

For someone who hasn't taken a train in awhile, I found it a bit confusing to find out where exactly to go to get the train at Metropark at night. I followed my GPS and it tells you , you arrived but there is no entrance on that side of metropark coming off the parkway side. You must go around and make a left at the light that turns onto WOOD AVE, and then make another left and go down about a half block and turn left into the parking lot. This lot is also used for pickup and drop off. There is a parking garage which has 6 levels so parking is pretty good. . I feel there needs to be better signs letting people know they have to walk and go behind the parking lot in order to get to the train. ( I took a 9:42p train to D.C.and everything is shut down and there's no one from Amtrak or Metropark to ask for help.) I was able to ask a really nice man who drove a taxi and was hanging with his friends. This man was so kind he walked me the entire way through a long tunnel and up the stairs to the platform. I found it to be a bit creepy at night being by myself waiting for a train. You are waiting outside on the platform . There is a overhang but I believe in the winter it will be very cold. I'm sure during the day it's a bit easier and there's employees to ask questions. I also recommend downloading the Amtrak App on your iPhone and print an E ticket. To avoid the mad rush and going to the kiosk and having to print your ticket and stand in line. The E ticket you board the train and the conductor will scan it. All pathways should be lit up and signs should be clearly marked to read. The good news is my Amtrak train to D.C. was 8 minutes early. The seats are very comfortable,they recline and there is a fold down tray table which can be used for eating or working. There are two electrical outlets for charging your phone or plugging in a laptop. The Amtrak train I took made several stops but only for 3-4 minutes at each station which wasn't bad. I suggest packing water, a snack, sandwich for late evening trains. There are different kinds of train cars. Business class, quiet car, economy. If you want to talk make sure you don't end up in the QUIET car. You will get yelled at, or asked to be quiet and leave... I do feel it's much easier leaving out of Metropark then Newark. With a few improvements this place can get 5 stars... read more

Waiting room is acceptable. Bathroom clean enough. Staff is helpful and courteous. Parking issues are limited and the exception. General conditions are very good. The big problem is the homeless population that inhabits the indoor waiting rooms on the platforms. This problem is even greater in the later evening hours and early morning hours in colder and inclement weather since this forces patrons to wait for the last few moments in the cold and inclement conditions. Unfortunately these people are just trying to survive and choose not to seek out shelter with proper facilities for them. It may be cruel to suggest some oversight of the issue by NJ Transit, however something should be done to insure passengers are comfortable without impacting the homeless. read more

It's not like we have a *choice*, there's no other realistic option for us Northern New Jersey residents catching an Acela. How do you rate a monopoly that doesn't have to get better? Fine, two stars, it hasn't killed me and I've definitely experienced better. If you're headed to Metropark traveling south on the GSP, get off at exit 131 then merge right, go first left, first left again, and one more left into the station -- this is right before the huge sign and exit 131A that takes you a mile out of the way. And parking is just $5 for a long workday (like 6am to 9pm), seriously cheap when you think about what they get at Newark airport these days. The waiting room is stupidly small - packed in winter, abandoned in summer. The lights & street intersections are a train wreck here, a zillion cars trying to get out of the garage and go home but no right turn on red out of the station parking lot, no right turn on red from Middlesex-Essek parkway onto Wood Ave, and (big surprise!) no right turn on red from Wood Ave onto Rt 27 Lincoln Highway. It can take 6 cycles to go three tiny blocks, that's just a lousy way to come back home. Anyhow here are a few things I've learned on my trips that might ease your pain: 1. Put your credit card in the parking ticket machine when you drive in INSTEAD of pulling a ticket. To leave just put in the same credit card! This saves you waiting in line for the ticket-pay machines, but sometimes the machine just doesn't feel like spitting out a receipt. 2. Amtrak understands E-tickets, but if your (lame and incompetent) corporate travel web site can't manage to get you one of those, the ticket machines inside the station are fast and convenient, one swipe of your credit card and you're good to go. No need to deal with the people behind the thick glass window. 3. The coffee guys in the station make a pretty good latte. read more

I've gotta hand it to the folks at NJ Transit...compared to other train stations and hubs of transit in the tri-state area, Metropark is a mecca of convenience and reliability. It has served as the return and departure point throughout my college years and beyond, solidifying itself as a permanent fixture of hassle-free travel in The Garden State. Located right off of the parkway, and less than an hour ride to NYC, Metropark services NJ Transit and several routes of Amtrak, with oodles of parking for short term and long term needs. For quick pick-ups, there are ample spaces and a pass-through area next to parking garage, which is free! Generally, the station is kept pretty clean, both along the tracks and on the platforms, as well the bathrooms and the ticketing/waiting area. You have the option of purchasing your tickets with the agents in this area, or heading outside to use the automated machines. There is Dunkin in the waiting area, which houses my only complaint: how do yo have such a small, cramped (albeit clean) waiting area for a station that apparently records approximately 6,000 boardings per day? Recently, NJ Transit poured 47 million dollars into this station for renovations and improvements, which rebuilt platforms, stairways, walkways and added electronic signage for train schedules along the platforms. Though I am not quite sure where ALL the 47 million went, but the improvements made definitely add to the comfort and convenience of traveling though here. read more

I use Metropark train station 5 days a week for 8 months out of the year to go to Rutgers and I believe that Metropark is probably one of the nicest train stations along North East Corridor. Although I don't spend a lot of time here because I only park, get on the train, get off the train, and leave it still has some nice qualities that make my short time here tolerable. Parking at Metropark can certainly be a hassle on weekdays especially if you plan on arriving later in the morning. The parking garage fills to capacity on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday by around 11am. On Mondays and Fridays, there are usually more spaces in the parking garage and you can generally find a spot any time of the day. When the parking garage fills to capacity you have to park in the overflow lot for a charge of $5. In my experience and the experiences of my family, safety has never been an issue at Metropark. There are plenty of lights and there are a few security guards in an office. I don't recall ever feeling unsafe walking from the train to my car regardless of what time of day or night it is. Cleanliness is also not an issue at Metropark as they really try to keep the station platform and the parking garage is clean and well kept with all signs and lights visible at all times. In regards to food and drinks, there is a small convenience store located in the station house, however it can be a bit pricey and it's generally better to pick up a coffee and bagel before you come to the train station rather than get one while you're here. Overall I would say Metro Park is one of the nicest train stations along the Northeast Corridor and it's amenities such as heated waiting rooms make waiting for trains that are delayed in the winter time not as bad as stations such as Metuchen or Edison. Although I have to come to Metropark as my train station, I probably wouldn't go anywhere else if given the choice. read more

However....The train platforms DO NOT have those ticket vending machines. They are located at ground level. Parked my car at Metropark and took the train to NYC on a weekday. There was lot of parking available - covered as well as the open. We found a spot in the east wing which was like an extension of the covered parking lot and in open. Got the ticket at the counter and they have seating available to wait out until the train arrives. Round trip ticket cost $19.25. The station is accessible by walking up the stairs or using the elevators. At the station there is closed sitting area which was a good option on a cold winter day. Station was clean, train was very convenient, got to avoid the traffic - good alternate than driving. read more

It is very convenient. The staff that sell tickets where patient and told us how to get the train since we were out of town. The parking garage is very convenient but be careful, people do not drive 5 mph even when the sign say it clearly. One woman almost hit our car because she was going over 5 mph and did not stop. When we came around 10 p.m. they had the garage closed for cars to enter. I am not sure if you can take the train back to NYC and parked there after 10 p.m. I forgot to ask. Average train station with only a tiny heated waiting area for the winter. The TV and announcements are ok and the ticket booth is downstairs from the platform. You can also buy tickets at the machines outside but it's horrible when it's freezing outside. There's parking in the garage and there's a nice drop off zone. As far as train stations go this one isn't too bad. There's not a lot of riffraff and you have a Dunkin' Donuts inside the station. You will find a Amtrak as well as New Jersey transit and plenty of ample parking. I guess that's why they call it " Metropark" it's because you can park there, who would've thought? Terrible customer service. The ticket kiosk malfunctioned. I was charged but no tickets printed. I went inside to the ticket booth hoping for a refund or my tickets replaced and the person said she couldn't help and would not provide contact information for a complaint. I went back to the kiosk and found a customer service # and was told to call back in 72 hours. I called back and processed a refund claim that was in March and I am still waiting. Update: After five months I finally received my refund in August. It took 5 months and a dozen calls!! I wish I could take away the 1 star I gave. read more

Although the garages are huge, parking here is woefully inadequate. There are some food options in the station building which is also where manned ticket counters and NJ Transit vending machines are located. The counters also sell Amtrak tickets. After a long flight of stairs the platforms are wide, have a few heaters and display schedules on video screens. Metropark is a little more tech savvy than most NJ Transit Stations, but much more crowded. read more

I understood why you raised from $70 to $90 as you said in the email that "parking fees have not increased at the NJ TRANSIT Metropark Station since 2010". Easy to get to from Parkway or Turnpike. Quick trip to Philly or NYC from here. Price to NYC is only $22 round trip. Parking is only $9 a day. It's in a business area so there's less worry about leaving your car. I lost my parking ticket last weekend and they were good about making sure I had proof of when I parked for my return so that I wasn't charged more than necessary. Ticket line is never long on a Friday afternoon, which I think is surprising. Ticket kiosks are available. Announced updated of coming arrivals. There's a coffee shop and a place to buy snacks while you wait. Biggest things that could probably improve are the bathrooms. They're kind of crappy. Toilet looks like it belongs in a prison. Very small for the amount of people that come through here. They could spruce that up a bit. Other than that, this is our station of choice when riding NJ transit. read more

Even though this isn't the closest train station to my house I find myself coming here more and more often, especially if I will be coming back late and on my own. The parking garages fill up on weekdays but if you are lucky you can get a spot. If you park on the third level you can walk straight onto the track to New York, but if you need a train ticket you will still need to go down to the ground level to purchase. When the garages are filled they offer valet parking for the same price as the garage. If you valet park and are coming back late you will have to go to the office in the garage to get your key and then walk to the lot which is mostly dark (when this happens it defeats the purpose of driving the extra distance.). read more

If you DON'T NEED TO commute from this location during peak hours, don't. The peak morning crowds are terrible, everyone is pushy as if the train is going to leave them. The peak evening crowds are terrible, everyone is pushy as if the train is on fire and they just NEED to get off. The passenger pick up/drop off area gets super congested especially as people exit from the parking garage. The only pros are that Metropark is clean, safe,there is ample parking and it is close to many different highways/roadways (Garden State Parkway, Route 1, Route 27, etc). OH! And the fact that the tunnel coming from NYC is very club like.. utz utz utz! read more

This is the best way to get to the city from NJ. $5 parking all day & just $20 round trip ticket to the city. Drops you off right in the center of the city. Plenty of parking always, whether you come later in the day & have to valet or self parking. It's always $5. Note: During rush hour, it will take a while to get out of the parking garage. We were on the 3 floor & it took well over 5 mins. If people would remember to pay for their parking using the pre-pay machines before, the lines would move so much faster. I do not like this train station at all. I grew up in this neighborhood and used to love it a lot. But ever since we have a huge influx of certain ethnic background who doesn't seem to understand the word "yield", know any proper etiquette (including eating smelly food in the morning on the train. Yes, I am not kidding) or talking really loud throughout the entire trip. Also, they can't drive for sh**! so causing so much traffic. It's 8am! You are not going to find any parking on the first, the second or even the third floor so move instead of looking around for a spot! Remember that SpongeBob episode where he got stranded in the creepy place called Rock Bottom because he got off the wrong bus stop? That's pretty much how I felt when I got stranded here. I had to get off at this station when Amtrak essentially skipped my stop at the Newark Airport, and little did I know that I was stranded in this bare-bone station. In fact, it's so barebones that the ticketing office was already locked at 9:30 PM, and the only ones there were my party plus few passengers and cabbies on long tracks. The signs were not helpful and the station was basically just tracks with stairs and elevator. No ticketing staff. No security guards. Absolutely nothing. Seriously, how's this a train station in the US? Even a rural stop in the less-developed Taiwan is more equipped than this place! read more

I frequently use this train station. While I never have any problems with the trains that arrive here the parking lot situation can prove to be a bit challenging. The great part about the parking lot is the price. I rarely pay over $5 when leaving my car here, no matter how long I've been gone. In addition, as opposed to taking a ticket and risking losing it and paying more, you can simply insert your card as you enter and when you exit. Definitely easy to do! Plenty of taxis available outside at all times and if you need a car rental, there is an Enterprise and an Avis, both within walking distance! read more

Compared to 90% of the NJ transit stations, this place is pretty nice. The bar is set pretty low amongst the stations across NJ as most of them are old, faltering and disgusting. This place is small but clean and has seating for you to relax before a train. It can be a little hard to navigate since you have to walk under the tracks to get to the other side of the station and get on a southbound train. Otherwise, it's pretty nice. What I will say is they have little rooms on the train platforms with electrical heaters that can be turned on with the push of a button and make for a warm retreat in the middle of the cold winter. This was absolutely awesome. Take advantage of this if you can. read more
