We were referred to an attorney at NM Law to gain conservatorship of our 19 y.o. autistic niece. The original estimate was $5,000 but due to the very strange way that the San Francisco courts operate, they had to re-do paperwork multiple times that would have been acceptable anywhere else in CA. They also rang up $$ because the court forced them to search for our niece's mother, who abandoned her and moved outside the USA with no forwarding info. Affidavits from her ex and her family were not acceptable by SF -- oh joy. So yes, it cost over double the estimate, and they could have thrown their hands up and told us to go elsewhere -- but they didn't -- they played the San Francisco game with unlimited patience. I am not their client. I never have been. In December of last year, I was looking for representation. I called NM LAW. I was told we would start with my paying them $3000 ( three thousand dollars ) for a document review, and that we would take it from there. Also, I had to sign a contract. In it, under "Services Provided" it reads that the attorney will review the documents, formulate an opinion, and discuss it with the client. After the document review, discussing my case via email began. I didn't appreciate their insulting my intelligence ( one doesn't have to be a lawyer in order to know that two plus two never equal six and three quarters ). I did not want to hire them. Three thousand dollars wasted. I am not wealthy. This was a bitter pill for me to swallow especially considering the fact that a lot of law firms offer a free case evaluation, but I had signed the contract. It gets worse, however. Two weeks after my last contact with them, I received an invoice. My jaw dropped. They had billed me additionally for "correspondence". If you care to look at the attached screenshots, you'll see that I paid them $3000 ( on January 3rd, not on February 1st , as they claim ) for "analysis" ( I wouldn't call it that ). Now, they've billed me for another $1500 for "correspondence". What they mean by "correspondence" is the lawyer's discussing the case with me via email after the document review. Well, nowhere in the contract does it say that the attorney will review the documents, formulate an opinion, and keep it ( the opinion ) to himself... unless you pay extra in order to hear or read his opinion on your case. Shameless. You may think that I may be an especially naïve person or extremely unlucky, and that this ( or similar ) would never happen to you ( It Only Happens to Other People Syndrome ). Think again. It may happen to you. Look elsewhere. I sympathize with every person looking for a lawyer, and I wish you good luck! read more
