If you are looking for fancy, this ain't your spot...but if you are looking good portion sizes of classic Chinese favorites at a good price, then No. 1 China may just be the spot for you! Located in the Kroger shopping center at the corner of South Cobb and Concord, next to a Papa Johns and Wing Stop sits this tiny old school Chinese spot. Given the current Covid situation, they are limiting dine-in and have now placed a plexiglass barrier on the counter with a tiny door/opening in which payment/food is passed through. While they have updated a few things to ensure they are keeping folks as safe as possible, they have not updated the wall menu board or the décor in this place opening...but at this point, I feel the outdated and slightly dingy décor adds to the essence of a small mom/pop Chinese spot! Food wise we have sampled multiple things from the menu, but our absolutes are the Pork Egg Roll ($1.25), Wonton Soup ($2.95), Sesame Chicken ($7.95) and the House Lo Mein ($6.95). As you can see, we can get all this for less than $20! And for that $20, we get at least two meals out of each dinner as the portion sizes are true to classic Chinese spots, with either the boxes or plastic containers being filled to the brim! I usually judge a spot by their Wonton Soup, and I treated No. 1 China was no different. Luckily for me they passed the test and their Wonton soup had a base of chicken broth (instead of beef!) and featured a few large stuffed wontons and a small packed bag of crispies! Since they passed this test, I was able to dive in to a few other dishes, mainly the chicken and lo mein. The Sesame Chicken dinner combo comes with fried rice and an egg roll, while the Lo Mein is a stand alone. The Lo Mein is packed with all the meats from chicken, beef, pork to shrimp along with the noodles and veggies. The Sesame Chicken is nothing special, but is mixed sized breaded chicken bites with a gooey sweet sauce. The fried rice is just ok, it doesn't come with a bunch of veggies in it, but it is a basic fried rice that hits the spot as a side. Service here is decent, they have always been very friendly on the phone and in store. Sadly they do not offer delivery of any sort, so I usually call my order ahead and go pick it up. I will recommend you make this habit as well, as walking in to order and wait can create a long wait time, as they get a lot of call in orders! With that, they always quote about 20 minutes for pick up time...add 15 to whatever they quote you. I have legit never arrived to find my order ready or to an empty lobby. They are always busy, so be prepared to be patient! Overall, this is a go-to spot for us for quick service, tasty and cheap Chinese food. I decided to give this Chinese restaurant a try since my favorite spot decided to shut down. Parking was easy accessible since it was located inside of the Kroger shopping center. Again, I drive 45 minutes to this place because they know me, and the food is great. I started getting Egg Foo Yong. Very good but I then tried Curry chicken. Also very good. This is now our go to Chinese restaurant in Smyrna. We've only been here twice but each time it has been really great. They are fast and our orders are always specialized. They follow instructions and get it right every time. We get the egg rolls (roast pork and shrimp), honey chicken, shrimp toast, kung pao chicken with extra peanuts, fried rice (which has egg in it), plain lo mein and crispy chicken no veggies just to name a few things we've tried. My husband & I order Beef Teriyaki without carrots on a weekly basis, the owner knows who we are, what we'll order before I finish saying what we'll order, & when I come in to get the food, she knows who we are & it's ready. ***3.3 stars*** Today, I had My first meal at #1 China. I phoned in My order for the orange chicken lunch special with fried rice and egg drop soup. My order was waiting on Me when I arrived. The employee's didn't seem overly friendly, but they were prompt. The restaurant is clean and brand new. It's designed simply like a take-out place is to be, and has 5 tables for those who prefer to dine-in. By the register, you may help yourself to a variety of to-go sauces including chili pepper sauce (the little containers tend to leak, fyi), eating utensils including chop sticks, tasty imported Asian candy, and fortune cookies. My car filled with a delicious aroma that made Me eager to get home and chow! First, I sampled the fried rice. I rate it flavorful and "Very Good" even as a stand-alone item. It is easily the best fried rice to be had within 5 miles. The ingredients seemed very fresh, and it was not dry, sticky nor oily. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a quart of it based on My experience. Next, I sampled the egg drop soup. It certainly wasn't the thickest nor the best I've had locally but it wasn't at all disagreeable. Overall, it was pretty run of the mill in terms of quality, taste, and quantity. Next time I will order the Hot & Sour soup. Orange chicken is prepared much like General Tso's or Sesame Chicken typically is (for those of us familiar with Chinese cuisine). Small chunks of chicken are battered, fried, and soaking in a sweet brown, orange-flavored sauce. A few pieces of broccoli were also included. The sauce was excellent, very tasty, and I discovered bits of orange pulp in it as well. For the most part, the chicken was tender, however, there were about 4 small chunks that were way too hard to be edible. I would order this dish again based on its flavor alone, but I hope that rock-hard bits wont be an issue again. The balance of scallions, onions and beef was ideal, though some may consider the dish heavy with onions. The sauce (though scarce in my sauce-adoring opinion) was so delicious but tasted identical to other Chinese restaurants' versions. The beef was tender, well marinated and the onions were so infused with the sweet flavor of the brown sauce they were practically caramelized.
