Back for another round of deliciousness at the historic Lamy building in Sedalia, MO. Started off with the Baked Meatballs with melted provolone and fresh baked crostini. Yummy way to start our meal... Salads for both of us. I had the Summer Salad: mixed greens, radishes, green onion, goat cheese crumbles, walnuts with a raspberry vinaigrette. Sunshine stuck "the best salad I've ever had", the House Salad: spring mix, Parmesan, roasted tomatoes, red onion, pepperoncini, breadcrumbs, with bleu cheese dressing and crumbles. I was blown away by the food and dining experience at Bistro Number 5. The building is an old Levi jeans factory, the number 5 factory, since 1893 as I recall. The building has been wonderfully restored and houses several businesses in addition to the bistro. We had some great beer, appetizer with goat cheese and pepadew peppers, and sandwiches. The sandwiches are build your own with choice of grilled chicken, fried chicken, buffalo chicken, hamburger, or vegetarian. The toppings include the traditional plus some fancy stuff like bacon jam, pimento cheese, and smoked apple butter. I got a hamburger with swiss cheese, garlic aioli, bacon jam, and fried onions. I came to No.5 yesterday for my birthday dinner with 5 girls. And unfortunately it's probably going to be my last time. I made a reservation the day prior so I figured it would be no issues with service. When we arrive our server asks us what we'd like for an appetizer; we let her know we need a few minutes. No problem there. Eventually, we put in our app order and it took probably 20+ minutes for the app to come. Appetizers are supposed to be quick and fast especially for what we ordered. If they were short staffed they should've warned me and said service would take a little longer. So once we got the apps we ordered the dinner since we thought that would take long too. Once we finished our apps the server never cleared our table. So when the dinner came we had a bunch of plates on the table. The server was clearly new and didn't have the slightest clue of what to do. When I got my dinner (the beef tenderloin medallions with mashed potatoes and broccoli) I received two tiny pieces that were burnt on the bottom (clearly the chef was trying to hide that). I asked for medium and got well done. I took a bite and didn't like it because it tasted charred. So I asked for a new plate that's cooked medium. They eventually got me the food and it was medium rare this time. I ate it but had to add a lot of salt since it lacked flavor. It supposedly had a honey bourbon glaze on it but I didn't taste that at all. Oh and btw the server never apologized for the mess up and never offered me a complimentary dessert for my bday... Also, she was mostly standing where the cook was preparing the food. A new policy the restaurant has is with parties of 6 and more they charge 18% gratuity with the check. I honestly don't think that's fair because our server really didn't deserve most of that tip... In conclusion, don't order anything fancy here or you'll be disappointed. I can cook a better piece of meat at home than this place.. and my dish cost $39 for two measly pieces of meat. Freakin rip off! read more

Such a cute place for brunch. The layout of the building is so unique, and the way it all flows together makes you want to check out a bit of everything while you're there. No. 5 Bistro & Bar is a wonderful place to have dinner in Sedalia, MO. The menu is something you would expect to have to drive to KC to experience. Mussels, charcuterie, and wagyu steak are things I have not seen on many Sedalia menus. But, ignore the hoity-toity fanciness; it is great food!! We shared the Ribeye Special and it was more than enough for two. The butter-cheese mix was perfect on the meat and the twice baked potatoes were as good as we have ever had. They have plenty of drink selections and seasonal food selections. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable. The staff seemed happy, friendly, and checked in enough to make sure we had everything we needed to have a wonderful experience. It's good food, but I'm not convinced it's worth the money you spend. When I'm spending $30 a person, easily, I expect to be blown away by the food. It was high quality, I just wasn't terribly excited by it afterwards. Probably the worst part of the meal was a waitress who was very engaging and nice, but completely inappropriate. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and we weren't comfortable leaving our 3-month old at the babysitter. The manager told us it was no problem. The other patrons were kind and patient with us. The issue with our child wasn't that they were a disruption. But instead, that the waitress asked us THREE times to hold the baby. She brought other waitresses over to see the baby. We just wanted to eat our dinner, and no, the waitress (whom we've never met before tonight) doesn't get to hold our child. Quit asking. To make matters worse, she kept informing us that the "food was really expensive". At one point, she even said she wouldn't "blame us if we decided to go somewhere else." Then she kept telling us that "this option was better because it was cheaper." I'm not one who gets offended by this, but after a while, you have to wonder, do we give a look like we're super poor? We were wearing nice clothes. It just came across as a little insulting. We knew what the prices were before we arrived. We looked at the menu online. And if we felt it was expensive, we would have gotten appetizers, salads, and grabbed a cheeseburger later on. I appreciated her looking out for us, but that was not okay. My man and I, came here for an early Bday dinner. We started with drinks at the bar: I had their strawberry Tom Collins & a Gin gimlet. My man had the French Manhattan. All of the drinks were delicious and the bartender was very friendly and attentive. We then moved to the dining area & started our meal with a small charcuterie board. Loved it! We also got the shrimp ceviche.... Eh, it wasn't very good. Not enough shrimp and the tortilla they served it with got all soggy. We then ordered salads and our entrees. I got the the Mahi Mahi and he got the Pork chop. The salads were ok, neither of us finished them. The fish was too salty and the carrots were dry. My man's pork chop was good, but he didn't like the mashed potatoes or the carrots or the side of grits. He said the grits were too dry. We didn't finish our entrees, brought the leftovers home and fed them to our chickens & dogs. Finally, we finished our meal by sharing a dessert & a chocolate martini. We got a comped blueberry cheesecake because it was my bday dinner. Sweet! It was delicious and again the drink was amazing. Loved it! The service was very friendly, prompt, professional, and attentive. The restaurant's ambiance was very nice and cozy. Our bill for 2 people, drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert was about $150. I really wanted to like this place more, but I've been spoiled by living in a foodie town, San Francisco, for over 30 yrs & traveling to other foodie states and countries. Let me preface this post by saying, I have worked in the restaurant industry for 32 years from a bus girl to management, so I'm going to make this review as fair as possible. Keep in mind, there was only 1 other table besides ours in the restaurant (and this table left after about 5 minutes of us being there).....and there were no customers sitting at the bar. I called in advance to inquire about the Bistro's hours on Labor Day of 2020. They said they closed at 9. I made reservations for our small party.....friends and family visiting from Dallas Texas and Atlanta Georgia, at 7 pm. We arrived at 7 sharp and were seated in the bar area (which was just fine). As we walked in, we saw a bartender slumped over the bar looking at her phone, didn't even look up. Our server greeted us and she was friendly. We ordered our drinks and dinner almost immediately. Everything came out in a very timely fashion, including the drinks. I ordered a mid rare filet and it came out blood blue. If my recollection stands correctly, the mashed potatoes were an additional cost of around $4.50. I apologetically asked my server if they could throw my steak back on the grill. She took the steak away and left the mashed potatoes (served in a small separate bowl) As my steak was reheating, the server asked if we were doing separate checks. We said yes, 3 separate checks. She brings my steak back out about 10 minutes later. In 1 hand she had my steak and in the other hand she had our 3 separate checks in hand, which she passed around to us. I was dumbfounded because our drinks were empty, (and she didn't offer us another round), my mashed potatoes were cold, and she didn't offer any dessert. I decided to not make a big deal about any of the 3 aforementioned disappointments, because I didn't want to spend money on extras when it appeared (I'm speculating) the server wanted to rush us out the door because it was Labor Day and no one else was there. Bear in mind at this point it's only around 7:50 and it closes at 9. The manager, a young gentleman, walked by us several times, never approached our table to inquire about our visit, never even nodded an acknowledgment. The whole experience left us feeling flat. To be fair, it's a gorgeous establishment, the food was ultimately very good (with the exception of the cold mashed potatoes), and it's a much needed diversion to the other restaurants here in Sedalia. read more
