My 21 mile out was met by a few banks of heavy fog and lots of workers headed west towards Taft and the oil fields. It was cool and crisp at 8:00 am when we checked in, $40 for 18 is still a deal. The pro shop didn't really have much merchandise at all which concerned me. The gentleman who checked us in was pleasant. We putted for about 10 minutes before we were up at 8:30. I noticed the driving range, it looked terrible. There were few early strong willed groups out in front of us. This course is classic with the all the different elevations and different terrains. The greens are in good shape, large and tricky, they challenge your game, most all break towards Taft that hasn't changed. The tee boxes weren't too bad, sand traps were all in poor condition, fairways were the same, shaggy and tough with many gopher and squirrels holes. Numerous trees on the course were in need of attention broken and down limbs some require removal. Cart paths are also in need of repairs. This beautiful course is in rough condition. I heard rumors that were mainly because of high water rates that have escalated to the breaking point for management. This used to be a Kern County gem, a fine place to play a round of golf or hold a tournament. Snack bar was always busy great lunches. Why can't the County or the City of Taft partner together drill a well or help with the serious problem out here? We (County) spend money for many causes and fund numerous questionable programs let's save a this classic venue before its too late. Our round of golf today was sad because of the conditions, but always enjoyable due the fantastic views of surrounding mountains and extensive farm lands definitely post card worthy

The course was crowded because of the weather. Probably the nicest day of the year so far for golf. Pro shop is fully stocked apparel clubs balls, hats they have everything that you possibly could need. Great snack bar breakfast burritos are excellent. Lunch is good. I enjoyed a delicious patty melt. The course from all the rains and fog in fantastic shape. mountains surrounding the course are emerald green. Lake Ming looked inviting there was even a boater out on the blue mirrored like water . The greens were very fast but they held your good shots. The bunkers had good sand. Tee boxes and fairways were all in fine shape as well. Kern River has a professional friendly staff that keeps of course, looking good and is well maintained. It's been awhile since Ive played because of the weather we've been experiencing and my score showed it.Our round took about 4 1/2 hours, but I can't complain It was such a beautiful sunny clear day. Please pick up your ball at that point and move it near the player in your group that is hitting the best, so you are not unduly holding up literally the whole golf course behind you. Your score doesnt matter that much yet! Don't know how many times I've nicely asked the course-marshalls here to educate n reinforce this on the course too, with esp. new players, but they look at me like they never heard of best-ball or picking up after 8 or 9 shots when its totally packed and backed-up. Seems you rarely do much. Just sit around acting important only. Then, the best part..what this leads to... So, while your group is waiting extra 15 minutes for group(s) ahead taking their sweet time taking 12 shots each and lazy marshall magically not seeing any of this for hours.. the group behind you also sometimes turns out to be newbies not even aware of the 3 slow groups ahead of you, and they start hitting-up on your group!, and not yelling Fore as a heads up ever. Kinda like a tailgater on the freeway being intentional. News flash, literally everyone hates this. And If you do it on purpose, some golfers will literally chase after you/assault you for that just like road rage on freeways. This kinda situation seems tp happen here more than most, & I golf all over. Last time put me over the line because a ball flew right over my kids head, and Course Marshall didn't bounce that group..! Ball from same group went rolling by us at least once before that, I called the so called proshop/ marshall, who did nothing in the end. I get that hitting up on someone a little accidentally happens from time to time, but if they dont yell fore, deny it, and then you dont bounce them, you guys are Lazzzy af doing next to nothing when you have dangerous play or super slow play that leads to it. Lots other folks say the same. See bad reviews here on yelp from othets about Kern for this reason. Its not just me! Happens here to me the most of any course in the area (after 20 years here in Bako playing a couple times a mo). Your staff=Not safe. Dont know how your course is often like this while others not nearly as much but I suspect its the owner & then staff. You must be spoiled by guaranteed business, and maybe like those cheapo hacks who way-overbook a place, but dont review a couple safety or etiquette rules w customers at-all. Kinda like the carnival!! Ive nicely asked you several times please at least put up a sign. or go over basic speed/fore etiquette at the desk like many pro courses do. you know, do something/anything safety related for all our money up there so a kid doesn't get hit or paralyzed by some morons ball. Never seen you do it once. Youre real good at taking money though! So what is it with your very amature pro-staff, Kern river??? Maintenance & kitchen got their stuff together for sure.. food, range, carts ok. But proshop & Course Marshall's Ive met here, you stink! Your course security is worthless. So many areas where brick borders are in disrepair. Broken out of place trip hazards because they arent cemented in. No fountains working. There were shimmers in the water ways cleaning them. Leaves and trash around no number boat fountain everything just looks worn down. The speaker system sounds terrible. How can you expect to have people go there with things so poorly taken care of. I just remember other places that are way more appealing. I wish there was a better spot for families where someone actually cared.

I've been a guest there, on several occasions, to play golf or tennis. The head professional, "Joe the Pro," was my first golf instructor, over 30 years ago, at the old Valley Rose public course, in Wasco. He taught me how to hit line drives with a 3 iron, tying it into my years of playing in organized, adult baseball (Hardball) since 1980. He literally grew up on the North Kern course, and he is a treasure, who anyone fortunate enough to have taken lessons from him knows! Jason, a certified tennis instructor, who is wise, beyond his years, focuses on the psychological, as well as physical aspects, of this game! The entire staff, as well as the executives, have gone above and beyond the call of duty, to accommodate this disabled senior citizen guest. My loyalty is to this incredible club. I will continue to work hard, in order to be worthy of being accepted into this ideal world, in the exclusive Seven Oaks area!

Time for a round to golf at North Kern. It's been a while since we've been out here, beautiful…read moremorning. We had a five some of good friends. The course looked great green fees are reasonable. Pro shop is stocked full of anything you might need. We hit some balls on the range to warm up and putted some. Ive probably played more rounds of golf at North Kern than any Golf Course, it's still a great challenge, the course seems to be getting longer as I'm getting older. Most all of the bunkers have good sand now. The greens were receptive to your good shots and were a little slow today probably because of the forecasted heat. There was a light breeze most of the day that kept the heat down it never got hot. We finished our round in four hours. enjoyed a cold beverage and delicious cheeseburger afterwards in the spacious lounge. If you haven't been out to North Golf Course in a while, make the trip.

Mark and I both had our share of disappointing shots but overall we thoroughly enjoyed our day. The course was in great condition as usual. We both shot 86s. The Stockdale restaurant was outstanding as well,super service delicious drinks and meals. My club sandwich was way too large to finish. This country club is one of the old establishments here in Bakersfield. Regardless, the place was kept clean and dinner was great. I had dinner with colleagues by invitation from a company. Food was great, steak was cooked well, the only dish I didn't like was the dessert. I think it was a sorbet? It was hard when we tried to have a scoop, we weren't able to finish it.
