Aloha Towers is a historic lighthouse that stands near Pier 9 on the Honolulu Harbor. The structure…read morewas designed by Arthur Reynolds and construction was completed in 1926. The style of this unusual lighthouse is Gothic Revival with a strong Art Deco influence. This iconic structure once housed the harbor navigation master, responsible for directing ships into and out of the Harbor. A massive Howard clock tells accurate time on the lighthouse. I took an early morning walk around the lighthouse with my daughter. The structure appears to be undergoing some rehab as the entrance was boarded up. A large plaque tells the building's history with several interesting photos. In the past, visitors could ascend to a 10th floor observation deck and view the harbor. Today, the building is closed to visitors, but is a central focal point of the Marketplace. The Marketplace houses restaurants and shops which were not open during my visit. The lighthouse was a fun discovery for me, but would have been more impactful if the observation deck was still open to visitors. We found parking about two blacks away in a metered lot. There is no charge to walk around the base of the tower.

At 99 and going close to 100 years old it's still shows proudly the Aloha Spirit going strong as to this day mom remembers vividly seeing this tower greet her as she arrived with dad to Hawai'i and to this day is one of the prominent structure easily viewed in many directions though in the past the observation deck gave you the stunning views the Oahu shoreline provides it now is closed and is just majestically stands there to welcome all with Aloha. You can find the tower easily right besides some shops and currently Old Spaghetti Factory and even Aloha Tower Luau "Ka Moana Luau" which offers a buffet dinner provided by Chart House along with a beautiful undisturbed view of the waterfront and evening sunset. Planning of training at all levels was a mess, I worked at individual unit level and Division, and though many leaders tried to fix it, it was not. It appeared that many field grades and above wanted to leave their mark on the division and make the unit seem more valuable and important than they were. But forget about the soldiers suffering at the individual level due to the overwhelming optempo. It's Hawaii. Let the soldiers experience it and remember that they are people too, and giving them a few hours off once a week for mahalo Thursday or whatever it is now doesn't make up for the lost time in training and packing out! Don't get me wrong, the need for a unit in the Pacific, but the equipment, facilities, and training cycle all need to be revamped. I know CoS will not budge as "it's Hawaii", so with that said, maybe take care of the soldiers like Big Army thinks you already are! By the way, 2 stars are very generous since I lost my retirement by 12 days because of this less-than-stellar HHBN leadership at the time! thanks guys! But I will still bounce back and be amazing since life out of uniform rocks!

As someone who has been lucky enough to visit multiple ships and submarines across the country and see the different exhibits they offer, I think this one might be a little overpriced for what they offer. Don't get me wrong, it is really cool to walk through the ship and see all the different sections and pieces of history, but the ticket price is a little steep (even for military families) and mainly for that reason I don't think I would go back. I also think they are missing some more interactive sections like those offered by other decommissioned ships. Also, they lack signage across the ship and we almost missed a HUGE indoor section because we didn't even know where to go next. If it wasn't because my husband is a sailor and knows his way around a ship, I am pretty sure I would have missed half of the exhibit. Did my sailor husband loved it? Absolutely. Would I come back if it weren't for him? Probably not.

This is a beautiful well-maintained fully operational military base. A lot of the bigger bases…read morewhere multiple missions are assigned have become "joint bases" meaning no longer single service. For example, Hickam - Air Force and Pearl Harbor next door - Navy. As you enter those areas you still get the sense of Navy or Air Force (Army also included at other installations) but they are considered Joint now with missions that overlap (Marines in there too at some locations). It's a way to consolidate some common services and save the taxpayers some dollars (at least in theory). So anyway, this is a great assignment for many with everything right on base from living (housing), shopping (Exchange and commissary) and recreation. There's also lodging for visitors if you can get it. The stay will be a lot less expensive than in Honolulu proper. Even if you are staying off-base, it's worth a visit to check things out.

Picked up military promo tickets for Disney at the MWR…read more LOCATION & DECOR: Clean, and oddly arranged. The room was definitely made for some other purpose. The desks feel crowded and unorganized. PRICE: $$$ You won't find better ticket deals for Disney than military promo tickets and anyone with a military identification card can purchase 6 tickets at the promo price per year per park --Disneyland/Disneyworld. Paid $319 for 3 day Park Hopper pass for Disneyland. SWAG/AMENITIES: -Event and theme park tickets -Equipment rental STAFF & EXPERIENCE: Had a little wait when we came in, and signed up on the guest list. Once our name was called, we were greeted politely and questioned about our needs. We were informed of the deals on the Disneyland tickets and were able to purchase and secure them right on the spot they told us how to use the tickets. It's not the same as the old days where you just show up with a ticket handed to the person and you're through. I recommend for any military members or dependence trying to get tickets for Disney or universal.

I will oblige Yelp and review this beautiful state because I do miss it! I've been to Oahu twice, once when I was a teenager and the 2nd time when I graduated from college. Both times, I enjoyed the beaches and hiking Diamond Head. I loved trying the local food, and the shave ice was especially refreshing. I look forward to exploring Maui on my next trip and trying more food and drinks, including coffee and perhaps some cocktails, since I didn't drink during my previous visits. The Waimea Canyon (also known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific") State Park is lovely, and a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast is a must do! the Na Pali Coast was features in numerous Hollywood films, and again, is a must see! Although Kauai Hawaii was my only Hawaii experience, I highly recommend anyone with an opportunity to visit Hawaii to do just that!

The gate closest to the airfield and Mililani Tech park side closes around 9pm. So you'd have to enter the gate across Lyman. Other than that, it's a little more peaceful and laid back than the hustle and bustle and crowd on Schofield. There is a pre-school called Armed Services YMCA that you could put your child in, a community pool for Island Palm residents, a car selling lot, a small and quaint bowling alley, and a small PX. I believe the Navy housing is farther back behind Wiliwili. The park is well kept. I'd recommend this area of you're ever stationed here and there is an opening.

I Remember when we first got stationed here my husband said to me Wheeler army airfield? Isn't that the first place to get hit before Pearl Harbor? Yes, yes it was. There's interesting historical signs about it On the main road by the big gray building and others in the pink Amelia Airhart hanger on the airfield. Many of the homes and hangers that got hit still have the bullet holes in them as historical landmarks. So we live here with respect and humility from the past & excitement about the future. This base is small but friendly & traffic isn't as bad as Schofield in my opinion. AVOID crossing between bases if you can in the morning. It will add an hour to your day. Wheeler has a wonderful new small bowling alley (only 4 lanes) with yummy food beer & free pool Thursday & Friday. Unfortunately due to sequestration they are not able to be open on other days At this time. It was built for the barracks next-door but tends to attract more of an older and family crowd. There are nondenominational Christian worship services at Wheeler Chapel 11 am Sunday's with Potlucks every first Sunday. Pagans meet in the church 1 Friday/mth although I hear it's basically a bunch of young gaming kids and probably not super religious. The Community Center behind the chapel has a pool, Small fitness center, and small movie theater you can reserve for parties. There are several great playgrounds all over the base. There is A barbershop, a bank, a delicious DFAC, shoppette, and a gym in and around the big gray building. The only gas station is on Schofield. All of the housing is pretty awesome in my opinion including the older historical WWII housing (except for poor Camp Stover in the back.) Make sure to make your way over to Schofield on the weekends for the KoleKole (sp?) Pass Hike. It's open to the public usually too. It's only .8 mi one way & doable with small kids & the views are phenomenal. I'm going to leave here with such fond memories! And those Mountain View's?! Breathtaking!! Historically Hawaiian Warriors trained on this plateau also (as they still do as part of the Hawaii National Guard.) Don't miss out on learning about the local Hawaiian history while you're here. I recommend the Shakka app if you're driving around the area. And while you're at it, stop at Zippy's and get some local food and donuts, it's kind of like a Hawaiian Denny's. Dole is only 2 Miles up the road for visiting family & tourists. We also make a great 'Gateway to the North Shore .'Last, all the helicopter & air traffic doesn't bother my family & we can't hear much in our house. On May 21, 2026, the Hawaii Joint Military Forces and Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency held a…read morememorial for the 163 fallen service members of the West Loch disaster. While this unfortunate piece of Oahu history took place in 1944, this is the 16th year in a row that the memorial was held at this location. I had the honor of attending this ceremony in the past, and will continue to support this for as long as it is scheduled. The Obama Hawaiian Africana Museum organizes this event in partnership with Military Joint Forces in Hawaii. The program starts with the Pacific Fleet Band, welcome remarks and invocation, followed by the Presentation of Colors from Joint Forces Color Guard. There are a number of guest speakers and keynotes to pay respects and update everyone on the efforts to properly identify remains. Following the speakers, a number of generous contributors lay beautiful floral wreaths, a bugler plays Taps, and the ceremony concludes with closing remarks and prayer. Thank you to everyone involved for honoring those we lost and those who continue to serve. The unfortunate incident at West Loch might not be common knowledge but at least the memorial continues with love and respect. God bless
