My party of 4 ordered the Rouladen, Sausage Plate, Sauerbraten, and Bavarian Burger. Honestly, the…read morebest-testing of the four was the burger, because those three plates of the German Specialties all had the same sides. Sauerbraten was tender and the two sausages of the Sausage Plate were perfectly seasoned. Environment was relaxed with a classic diner-feel; just keep in mind that bakery goods are almost all gone by noon on a Monday! :)

Old German Bakery & Restaurant had been highly recommended as a must-visit when in Fredericksburg…read morebut I was incredibly disappointed by the overall experience. NOTES: - Reservations: no... walk in only - Parking: a few spots in front but free street parking nearby as well - Online ordering: available on their website through PopMenu for pickup - Closed Wednesday and Thursday THE HIGHS: - Arrived around 8:00 am on a Sunday morning and got seated right away - Coffee was decent... not the strongest but good enough - Workers were all very nice THE LOWS: - My poached eggs on the Country Benedict were cold... it seemed like they had sat for a while before being served (the sausage and gravy weren't hot either but they at least had a little warmth) - I wanted to get some items from the bakery but after being so disappointed in the breakfast I passed THE PRICE: Reasonably priced for the portion size - 2 Coffees ($3 each) - Country Benedict ($15.25) - Holstein Schnitzel ($18.75) - German Pancake ($6.75) - Opa's Smoked Sausage Link ($5) BEST BITES: - Opa's smoked sausage link (flavorful and juicy) THE VERDICT: This was my first visit to Old German Bakery & Restaurant after seeing it recommended online by so many people but I left wishing I had eaten breakfast somewhere else. Maybe the bakery is better than the breakfast but I won't be recommending it to anyone I know visiting Fredericksburg.

First time at Vaudeville. We were walking by and saw that the daily special was Buttermilk Fried…read moreChicken, we are always looking for good fried bone-in fried chicken, so we went downstairs to give it a try. Vibe is euro-bistro and the staff is perfectly attentive. Prices are high, but honestly aligned to the quality of the food, at least the dishes we had were worth the prices. Food: Buttermilk Fried Chicken, with Onion/Bacon flash fried collard greens, whipped potatoes and house gravy and Jalapeno Cornbread for $32 Reuben on Marble Rye for $24 16oz Stella Artois for $10 We agreed that the fried chicken (5/5) was the best we could remember having. Whipped potatoes (5/5) were light, fluffy and perfect taste/texture. The gravy was like brown butter (5/5). The collard greens (5/5) were flash fried and if you've never had them like this, it's like eating collard green potato chips. Cornbread (3/4) was a bit too delicate and sweet for our taste. You couldn't pick it up without it falling apart. The Ruben (3/5). My wife loves a good Ruben sandwich. This one had the makings of a good one, but they use a Thousand Island sauce (too much of it) on the sandwich, and it hides the flavor of the meat. Next time we would ask for the sandwich without the TI sauce, see if that improves the rating. The sandwich came with house made potato chips (5/5), a small house salad with vinaigrette (5/5) and a large, pickled cucumber. I know, that's a pickle, but these are cucumbers that have gone maybe a third of the way through the process, so the cucumber taste is really prevalent. Lastly, we had the Creme Brulé (3/5) for dessert. It was nice, but the custard was coffee and caramel flavored, and we prefer the standard custard look and flavor. The caramel should come from the top layer, not the custard. The top layer was a bit too thick as well. We liked it, just didn't love it. Overall, quality food, service and vibe with prices that are aligned to more special occasions than everyday eating out. We'll be back to try the Monday Crawfish Etoufee and the Tuesday Duck Confit daily specials...look too good to pass up.

Vaudeville is a nice spot for an upscale dinner in Fredericksburg with delicious food but at a…read morepretty elevated price. NOTES: - Reservations: available online through Resy - Parking: free street parking nearby within walking distance - Online ordering: available on their website through ToastTab for pickup - The bistro is located on the bottom level of the building (go in the doors and head down the stairs) THE HIGHS: - Beautiful interior with moody lighting and comfortable seating - Attentive servers and dishes are cleared quickly - Food is presented beautifully - Grilled lamb rack is PHENOMENAL - Their "legendary cookies" are thick, chunky, and delicious THE LOWS: - Very pricey and the menu prices were more expensive than what was on their website (lamb rack online was $47 but at the restaurant was $56) - Pistachio tiramisu barely had any pistachio flavor... there was a sprinkle of crushed pistachio on top but that was about it and the flavor didn't carry throughout THE PRICE: Expensive for the portion size (good quality but not justified by the price) - Large blood orange sparkling water ($12) - Seafood gratin ($28) - Mediterranean pizza ($31) - Grilled lamb rack ($56) - Pistachio tiramisu ($19) - Dark chocolate hazelnut cookie ($8) The total was $166.71 after tax ($12.71) but before tip. BEST BITES: - Grilled lamb rack (cooked perfectly, juicy, flavorful, and the herbed tzatziki on the side is amazing) - Dark chocolate hazelnut cookie (get one to go if you're too full... you won't regret it) THE VERDICT: This was my first visit to Vaudeville (it came highly recommended) and I enjoyed my meal overall. With how expensive it is, I don't think I'll be returning and probably would only recommend it to others if they really want to splurge and don't have any other options.
