Fantastic, thoughtful, thinks-out-of-the-box endocrinologist. I went to him after ten years of going to other doctors who kept saying I was fine because my numbers were good, and dismissing my feeling that something was off in why I couldn't lose weight. Dr. Maclaren solved the mystery! Thankfully it's nothing serious but he knew exactly what the issue was and how to address it. He had a unique, holistic, and thorough "whole person" approach and every appointment with him was helpful. I wish more physicians had his kind, humble, and attentive approach. I was supremely bummed when he retired recently and have not found anyone since with his level of understanding of endocrine issues. Alas. So you can't see him. But right before he retired he wrote a book based on his approach, so that is helpful too. read more

Disgusting practice. They will lie on on your medical chart about diseases you don't have. They also bill your insurance fraudulently. I have filed a complaint with my insurance company about their billing practices and with the NY State Department of Health. They are a corrupt practice - do not seek medical advice from this man. Plenty of endos in NYC - go somewhere else. They will steal your money and create a fake medical diagnosis just to bill your insurance. Terrible practice - they are a complete SCAM. read more

Only because I think that he is interpersonally a nice man (that is to say that he is well-mannered and refined) do I give Dr. McLaren two stars instead of one. I went to see him years ago and I brought my special-needs daughter there as well. It would never have occurred to me to leave him any kind of review this long after the fact, but now I feel like I must to balance out some of the rest of what I see on this page. I was on a page looking for a new endocrinologist, and he was in the search results. I believe he was probably an excellent doctor once. Now, he prescribes Metformin to almost everybody who walks through the door. That is literally his magic pill. I wouldn't be surprised, to be honest, if he gets a kickback for prescribing it, though how he benefits from that if it's filled generically, I wouldn't know. Metformin caused my daughter to have a seizure at school and be brought to the hospital in an ambulance. Taking it made me feel very sick. After she had her seizure, I took us both of us off this medication. Dr. McLaren spoke to the school nurse behind my back, and took me out of this equation. The school nurse was a buttinski enough as it is. That created stress in my life that I neither needed, nor wanted, and made it more difficult for me to take my daughter off a seizure-inducing medication without appearing to be a negligent parent. In case anybody wonders, I was told by a doctor in the hospital that this drug can be a factor in that, and when I took her off of it, I didn't see another seizure. Most problems have to be solved with diet and exercise if they're metabolic. a pill is very rarely the answer, and Metformin can be dangerous unless you are an actual diabetic. Also, I cannot remember what the exact topic was, but I remember telling him something personal about the contents of my life, oh, yes, I believe it was about somebody I was in a relationship with, because it was abusive and greatly stressing a thyroid condition that I had, and I would later see that in the notes he took, he rendered a value judgment about me. Embarrassingly, I found that out when I had him transfer all my records, including the notes, to another doctor. Plainly, my dignity is very important to this man... and yours will be too (that's sarcasm). read more

Dr. Maclaren has changed my life! Dr. Maclaren is a solid physician who really knows his stuff. This shouldn't be taken lightly in the complex specialty of the endocrine system. He's a professor at Cornell and his works have been published. What I value most as his patient though is his kindness. He'll take the time to explain everything to you in the simplest terms. Dr. Maclaren is an excellent endocrinologist. He deals with rare endocrine disorders and knows how to treat them effectively. I have been going to Dr. Maclaren since 2001 and highly recommend him. Dr. Maclaren is the greatest doctor I've ever seen in my life. He is so thorough, so kind, so smart, so loving, so humane, so experienced! I want to call him "God's Doctor"! He really cares about his patients, takes his time, and gives a million dollar advice for life. I found Dr. Maclaren based on all the good reviews he had, (I always choose my doctors, lawyers and hairdressers very carefully). I feel so blessed to be able to find him. I came to Dr. Maclaren all worried and scared, because I just found out that I had a thyroid problem, a couple of nodules, and hormonal dis-balance. (Another doctor, when I was vacationing back home in Russia, has told me about my thyroid issue and had really scared me, saying that the two nodules I have, need to be removed asap by surgery, and that my hormones are not in balance, and it will cause a lot of health problems for me). I decided to get a second opinion, by a really good American doctor, which happen to be Dr. Noel Maclaren. First, Dr. Maclaren and I had a 20 min consultation, during which he asked me some questions in regards to my health, over all well-being and my lifestyle. Then he sent me to the lab to take a very thorough blood test, scheduled me for an X-ray, and asked me to come back when the lab results are ready. I came back a couple of weeks later and based on my lab results and the X-ray, Dr. Maclaren has assured me that my thyroid was working fine, the nodules are harmless and do not need to be removed, and that my hormones are in perfect balance. I was on top of the world, so happy! Little extra: When Dr. Maclaren had my lab results in his hands, I asked him for advice on my hair loss (at that time my hair was falling out so much,- I've tried so many things to stop it, and nothing had worked), so Dr. Maclaren looked at my lab results, and immediately told me that I was little deficient in Zinc. He told me to take Zinc and Biotin, which I did. Miraculously, my hair loss has stopped after a week or so after taking them. Then, Dr. Maclaren told me that based on my blood tests, I'm genetically at risk to develop diabetes (both my grandmother and mother have developed diabetes type 2 at the age of 50). So, he suggested that in order for me to avoid developing diabetes, I can try Zumba (Brazilian high intensity dance) for an exercise, and keep a healthy diet. He discussed all the healthy food options with me, and told me to avoid sugars, flour, carbs, etc. Of course, I took all his advices very seriously. Zumba has become my most favorite workout ever! I do Zumba 4-5 times a week, and cannot imagine my life without it now. It keeps me thin, sexy, happy and vibrant. I eat mostly proteins, vegetables and berries, which also keep me in good shape and give me a lot of energy. I feel and look better than I did in my twenties! I think Dr. Maclaren is an amazing doctor who has been able to diagnose multiple concerns regarding my health that others could not, and since I have seen him I can honestly say I'm doing so much better. My mother has also been seeing him as well as my aunt and we are all very pleased with his level of care and concern for us individually and more personally rather than like a chart number. I have read some of the other reviews in particular the negative ones, let me say that every office can have some billing confusion and misunderstandings however I can say I never experienced such a problem. I have never experienced any staff there when I did need to question something that any of the staff has been uncooperative, dismissive, or rude but rather concerned and helpful in every way so please don't let all negative comments here or otherwise determine your decisions in seeing an amazing doctor based on few negative reviews when there are so many more positive ones but rather go see for yourself and make your own determination this doctor is a far travel for me but every step of the way he is worth it all a million times over and I will continue to see him in order to continue in my care. read more

The knowledge, professionalism and courtesy of the Doctor as well as his staff has had me coming back to this office throughout times that my Insurance was no longer accepted. You can not find better help from any other Endocrynologist and staff in NYC - No Doubt. Dr. Maclaren had me on monitors, pumps and medicines YEARS before other DOCTORS have even HEARD of the technology!
