Things were good again when I went with my friend for supper. The atmosphere is friendly, and bright inside. Service again wasn't what I wouldn't call friendly but quick. Food was in general really good we ordered a variety of curries, pad Thai and shrimp with wine sauce and stuffed tofu. The best and most intersting dish was the shrimp with wine sauce. Crunchy with kinda a sweet sauce ontop. Curries were delicous with coconut rice. Pad Thai was well done. The only the we didn't enjoyed was the stuffed tofu becauase the meat was cold inside but the tofu wrapper was hot. So it makes me feel like it was microwaved. Wow! Have you ever cried tears of joy from eating curry? Well I haven't either but let me tell you, Noi Thai would be the one to get you there. Their green curry is incredible: creamy, bold, with a light kick of spice. To start, I had their tom yum; As advertised, it's sweet and sour, a great warm up to begin the meal. Even something as simple as their coconut rice is perfect. The server (who I think is the owner) is nice and accommodating. The food came out in only ~10 minutes. Came to Viphalay during Downtown Chinatown week 2018 with a coworker last month for lunch. This was our 3rd stop for Downtown Chinatown week. Unfortunately upon arrival we were told there had been a misprint in the advertising and that they were only participating for dinner time and not offering the $15 2 course special at lunch. It was literally -35 C with windchill and we weren't about to change restaurants so we decided to still give Viphalay a try. We opted for the green and red curried chicken with coconut rice (also still from the same $15 menu except we had to pay more for a lunch portion, hmm...) Don't get me wrong, the curries were FABULOUS but the whole experience was a little off putting customer service wise. We each ordered an appy to share in order to still have the 2 course meal we had been craving. My friend ordered the spring rolls - good but I'm not sure $10 good. I ordered the salad rolls - also $10 and smaller than most. The flavour however in the salad rolls here was outstanding - big basil leaf, two dipping sauces, absolutely delish. Total ended up being just shy of $30 each which was a far cry from the $15 we would have paid had it been dinner time (and no, they were not busy on this frigid cold snowy day - I think there were 3 other tables in the hour we dined). I'd definitely be open to coming back to Viphalay but for a Thai lunch special, I'd recommend Num Chok Wilai on 124th street at about 1/2 the cost and also excellent quality. Viphalay, I'll visit you again - but I think for a longer sit down dinner date. read more

This is my new fav. Thai/ Laos restaurant in Edmonton! First we tried their drinks, we ordered Laos ice tea and Thai ice coffee. The Laos ice tea was very good! has a coconut flavour to it and it is very unique. The Thai ice coffee tasted exactly like Vietnamese coffee, nothing special, but I did need something to pick me up! We had a hard time deciding what to start with so we ordered the platter. There were 5 items, three of them were shrimp which I really enjoyed them. One was Samosa and the last one was with cream cheese, these two were kinda confusing for a Thai/ Laos restaurant... For soup we got Tom Yum and it was very different from the standard Tom Yum. This one has more of a tomato flavour and i really enjoyed it. Our main were green curry, pad thai noodles, and large bowl of coconut rice. the green curry has the perfect spice and sweetness to it. Love eating the broccoli, it soaks up all the curry. Pad Thai was very good! the noodle was cooked perfectly and again like the Tom Yum soup it has more of a tomato flavour compared to other locations. We also ordered papaya salad and glass noodle but they ran out of both :( I will come back and try them! read more

This was a spectacular dining experience. We came here for the Chinatown Dining week and could not be more impressed. The place was full of people and the servers were scurrying around helping everyone and anyone. The staff are knowledgeable and aware of what is happening in the room. I ordered the coconut red curry chicken and coconut rice. I absolutely loved the food. They popped with flavour and the spicy curry was just enough for me to enjoy. The desert was a banana desert. Little pockets of what I am calling heaven. Slightly creamy with a light banana flavor. It was simply delicious. Thank you Viphalay family, simply amazing! read more

We came for the Chinatown dining week option and were lucky to grab the last parking spot in the lot. Walking in, the place was understandably packed at 7ish on a Wednesday night ($15 for a two course dinner is a good deal!). For how busy it was, our servers were very quick and friendly. Our orders were promptly taken, our waters were consistently filled and our food came out quickly. We ordered the orange cashew chicken and the red curry with beef, both with coconut rice. The chicken and rice came on one plate with a decent portion of the stir fry. Plenty of chicken breast (not at all dry) and vegetables. There was a lot of onion though, and it was bordering on raw, so we left most of it. The curry and rice came in two separate bowls which I appreciated. A decent portion of beef, bamboo, green peas and carrots in a sweet, coconutty and slightly spicy sauce. I really enjoyed the flavors but my rice was really cold when it reached our table. For dessert, we chose the roti and banana envelopes. Both were dry, as though they were pre-fried/plated, which I wouldn't be surprised by how busy they were. Both were just ok. Viphalay's website indicates the Stadium location was closed but when we drove by the area, we saw the open sign with the name of Noi Thai restaurant. We decided to give it a try. We were greeted by this lovely couple and was seated right away. We ordered Pai Thai, Spicy Noodle, and Tom Yum soup. The food tasted exactly the same as Viphalay downtown so we asked if there's any connection. We found out they are from the same family. The restaurant was busy when we got there but they still provided an excellent service. Our tea and water were constantly filled. One of my friends is gluten free and luckily they have gluten free Pai Thai. The food portions are quite big. My friend can't finished her dinner so she had it to go. The owner was so polite and he never rushed us out the door. My friends and I enjoyed the food and will definitely return to this restaurant. Please do not get fooled by the restaurant name. If you are craving for Thai Food, do give this restaurant under new management a try. You will get good customer service and great food. read more

Saw that it was Chinatown dining week and decided to try out Viphalay for dinner. It was $15 for a curry/stir-fry with an order of coconut rice and a dessert. For that price, it was definitely a good portion and we actually ended up not finishing and packing the rest to go. We ordered the brown curry with chicken and the green curry with beef, both with coconut rice. I can't really eat spicy, so it's nice that they have a couple curries for me to choose from. The brown curry is a bit on the sweeter side and contains peanuts and potatoes. The green curry had a bit of spice to it, but it wasn't too overpowering, but then again, I only had a few bites of it. There were 3 desserts on the menu to choose from: roti, banana envelope and coconut ice cream. We ordered the roti and banana envelope. The portions for the dessert are fairly small, but I think that was because it was part of the dining week promotion. The banana envelope was ok, a bit messy to eat. I really enjoyed the roti though and would definitely eat it again. Who doesn't love roti with condensed milk? We got to the restaurant right at 5pm and it was a good thing we did because they had a lot of tables reserved and a steady stream of people coming after that. We decided to try this Laos and Thai restaurant in Chinatown after hearing great reviews and wanting something a little different. As a group of 5 (and one baby), we got to try a variety of dishes which were all delicious! Atmosphere: 4/5 When we got there, it wasn't very busy and we had a long table by ourselves. It was a nice, cozy and quiet atmosphere. Parking was a bit sparse but it wasn't a huge problem. Food: 4/5 We ended up ordering the thai salad, pad thai with chicken, penang curry beef, orange cashew chicken with bell peppers, and oven roasted chicken. All the dishes were great - not too spicy or saucy and went well with the coconut rice. Service: 4/5 Servers were very attentive and told us how long some of the dishes would take to cook - the oven roasted chicken did take a little longer than expected. This is probably one of the best Thai restaurants in the city. I was impressed with the service from the start. Even though we walked in just 20 minutes before closing, they graciously seated us and did not rush us at all. The green curry had well-layered flavour with a bit of heat, and the coconut rice was soft and fragrant. I will definitely be going back here to try some of the other dishes! We ordered the green curry and brown curry - both with beef and coconut rice. The coconut rice was fragrant and fluffy and always such a treat. The green curry was delicious - full of veggies and beef - and with a kick. The brown curry (Massaman curry) was slightly disappointing - it had a sweet profile which I wasn't expecting and there were only three pieces of beef in the portion. For dessert the coconut ice cream was creamy and full of flavour - made locally too I believe. And the roti, although only 2 pieces was yummy! I just wish there was more to go around! All in all a great meal at an unbeatable price. I would go back to try other items for sure. read more

My wife and I gave it a try two weeks ago shortly after they opened and love it. We tried again last night and confirmed it's a hit. Not to be missed if you want real Thai food with a little Laos influence. Best Spicy Basil Beef and Massamun curry outside of Thailand. Last night we tried Drunken Noodle and Hells Beef. Pass the sketchy neighbourhood to find Thai heaven. We have been at least 10 times with only one dinner a weird disaster - the regular cook must have been in a body cast - otherwise they would be a solid 5 stars. The staff are consistently friendly and offer great service. The food is excellent. Have the Thai Laos green papaya salad. Very spicy- enough to make you choke but worth it. Then have shrimp in red wine sauce. So delicious it could be a meal. We've had massamum brown curry with peanuts. OMG! Also their green curry is super. You must have their pad Thai. It's authentic and no ketchup sees that dish - as it should be! Best pad Thai out of Thailand. Hells beef heat creeps up on you but luckily their coconut rice tempers the fire. Try their cocktails too. Unlike many re restaurants that skimp on the liquor, their drinks have a generous pour. Finally, dessert is a shared dish of deep fried bananas or banana envelops. read more

I'm always in search of good thai food. I love the range of flavors, the heat and the different types of ingredients that are not commonly used in other restaurants. Viphalay did not disappoint. We came here after the Rangers victory on my first night in Edmonton. We were able to walk from The Pint (where we had a few) and were craving sustenance. When I sat down and looked over the menu, my pulse quickened and I got even hungrier. The Gaeng Kah Gal (coconut soup) we started with had nice spice and a hefty amount of lemongrass and beautiful coconut flavor. I took breaks from sipping it by munching on the Dum Mak Hong (laotion papaya salad) which had bright chili flavor that I loved. Our entrees were the yellow curry chicken, drunken spicy noodles with shrimp, BBQ beef and coconut rice. The beef was my only complaint because it wasn't as delicious as the others and was overcooked in my opinion. They majority of the entrees were made spicy for us on our request and the whole meal made me very happy. Even the coconut rice had wonderful flavor. This spot is fun, the prices are reasonable and I'm glad I got to eat here. read more

Our whole family are big fans of Viphalay. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but rest assured the decor is nice on the inside. We always get the same dishes: green curry chicken, orange cashew chicken, basil shrimp (hot) and coconut rice. The food is remarkably consistent. The biggest competitive advantage here is the service...but maybe that because we go a coupe of times per month! The owner and other employees seem to always be happy... The secret here is the desert. They have coconut ice cream like you have never tasted. They say it's a "world exclusive"...not just the regular vanilla ice cream with coconut flakes in it...no way, this stuff is the real deal. Anyway, very much recommended.... read more

I've been a little slow to get to Viphalay, but it's quickly become my #2 favourite Thai restaurant in the city (Lan's Asian Grill being #1, despite terrible recent terrible service choices and their move to a cafeteria style, take-out restaurant). Viphalay is more of a conventional restaurant - compared to Lan's - but the atmosphere is still very relaxed and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable about hanging around past the meal. The prices are also very competitive for Thai food, and if you get your dish sans meat, they'll drop a couple of bucks off the price. I haven't tried too many of their dishes yet, other than a couple of curries, coconut rice and Pad Thai, but I've been impressed by the quality. Although I compare everything to Lan's and while most of what I've tried is comparable, Viphalay falls a little behind with their Pad Thai. I'll probably avoid getting it there in the future; it was rather plain and lacked the punch of Lan's. But the coconut rice and their curries are excellent: nice and rich and hearty. So my advice would be this: if you're looking for great Thai food at a good price, but want a traditional restaurant experience, go to Viphalay. But if you're looking for the absolute best Thai in the city, and can put up with a terrible dining in experience (including mandatory plastic cutlery), head to Lan's. These days my choice is generally Viphalay. Why Lan's why!? read more

This is the best Thai restaurant in Edmonton. Came here with 3 friends on a recommendation by someone else. The service was fast and friendly, the food was absolutely amazing and the price is definitely reasonable. The red wine shrimps are a must. We had the red, green and brown curry dishes, and each one was delicious and unique. The small rice is good enough for 1 person, whereas a large can feed about 4 people. Definitely get the Roti Rolls and Banana Envelopes for dessert. While we are from Calgary, this restaurant alone is worth another trip to Edmonton. read more

Thai food is an addiction, and Viphalay doesn't help matters. Their green curry is probably the best I've had anywhere. I'm also a big fan of their orange chicken stir fry, pad thai, red curry, and salad rolls. The tom yum soup is great as well. I don't think I've had anything that I didn't enjoy. The only things that I would say are downsides is that there are no refills on pop and I've gotten a bit of attitude for showing up 10 minutes late for a reservation, even when the place was totally dead. But the food makes up for it, and I've had some really nice servers here. They are also extremely accommodating for gluten and dairy allergies. One time I kept asking questions about the wheat content in several dishes on the menu. The server kept rushing back and forth between me and the chef several times to let me know what was okay to eat. She was really nice about it, and I really appreciated how careful they are about allergies. The restaurant is in an old two-story house. They have obviously kept some of the Indian decor from the previous restaurant, so it's a little bit odd, but really, who cares? The food is great! read more

I'm half thai and I've been eating thai food my whole life. This is the mcdonalds of thai food, with 10x more sugar in it than good thai food. It's disgustingly sweet. And the only difference in the panang and red curry was they had different veggies in them, hello? Don't even need to mention the slow service when the food was so bad. But don't worry, if you're not going to cook your own thai food, this is the best it's going to get from a country with a thai population in the low thousands. I just feel sad when my heritage is diluted with so much sugar that it's like eating candy for dinner. read more

If I had to live on a dessert island for the rest of my life and could only eat one thing... It would be their coconut rice!! It. is. SO. good! I love everything I've tried (so everything) on their menu. If it's your first time get the coconut rice, pad Thai, red curry and the curry prawns. The service is fast and friendly and I love the funky atmosphere. It's a great place to take a date, friends, grab lunch, or take out and enjoy at home. In fact if I'm having last minute friends over for dinner I always order Viphalay for pick up. We even had family visiting from Whales who had never tried Thai food (or really anything except the classic meat and potato meals) and they LOVED it. I thought was decent priced as we had 9 of us and had more then enough food for $147.00. The yellow curry chicken was top notch and the hell beef was spicy as expected but very tasty. read more

My friend and I both tried this place for the first time on Friday and loved it. It's a quaint little Thai and Laos restaurant just off of Little Italy and Chinatown. Don't be fooled by the seedy area outside -- the interior is rich and cozy. It's all about the comfortable atmosphere and good food! We had the pad thai and masaman curry with chicken and jasmine rice. The pad thai was great, chewy and flavorful, but not too much. The masaman is good if you like your curry sweet and not too spicy. Our waiter was super helpful in teaching us about the different kinds of curry, which ones are better for less spice, and which rice is best to pair it with. Wash it down with the pineapple-coconut juice -- it's delicious! They also have a great dessert menu, although I was too stuffed to sample it myself. Great service and staff, wonderful atmosphere! We ended up staying there for hours just talking and they didn't hurry us out or anything. I'm adding Viphalay to my list of best restaurants! read more

Turns out its still the same family and the food is just as great. Especially the red curry with beef. Now it's in the uncles name Noi. He is sweet and makes you feel very welcome. Viphalay has replaced Boualouang as our default thai takeout place, largely because parking is easier and also because their Massaman Curry is fantastic. The decor is much swankier on the inside than you'd expect based on the facade in a fading low-rise office building. The pad thai reminds me of the best I've had in Bangkok. The green curry is spicy by default, but if you need something milder, they'll add additional coconut milk, which gives it a nice, creamy mouthfeel. read more

Got to love these grungy, hole in the wall looking places from the outside. It's pretty nice once you get inside, we were pleasantly surprised. There were 5 of us and we were hungry, so we decided to share a couple dishes: - Pad thai ($15) - awesome! Noodles cooked perfectly, sauce not too sweet and has all the components of a classic pad thai that you crave. - Drunken noodles with tofu ($14)- my friends loved this dish so much, they ordered a second one (after the first one was devoured in record time). The noodles were pretty interesting, they looked like ramen noodles but they are apparently egg noodles. Came with good amount of vegetables too! - Green curry with chicken ($14) - nice amount of spice/heat to it. Always perfect with coconut rice. - Coconut rice ($6) - we got a large bowl which was plenty for everyone. Smelled amazing and tasted just as good. - Sweet and sour fish (piew vahn bah) ($16) - came with lots of vegetables (tomatoes, onions and sweet bell peppers). Fish was a tad overcooked...worth a try but wouldn't get it again. - Massamun (brown) ($14) - we got this vegetarian style. This one wasn't that great, sauce was way too sweet. Don't bother ordering this one. Great little Thai spot! Edmonton has a couple of great Thai gems, this is one of them. Definitely check it out. read more

The food was AMAZING! And the service was superb and attentive. Our group of six wasn't a problem for them and we were able to get in even without a reservation. But that food, it was SO good. Very authentic Thai yet spiced to our Canadian tongues. We had two children with us and they provided a booster seat for the one who needed it and paper for the kids to draw on. The kids loved the food as well, have been talking about it for a couple of days. We will definitely go back. We hadn't been since it was Viphalay and I definitely recommend Noi Thai.
