    Braised beef

Had lunch here today. Thoroughly enjoyed my braised beef and noodles and peach oolong tea. Both were very good. Word of caution, this soup was spicy. I'm really glad to have another option for Asian noodle soups beyond pho.

As you can see, it just opened very recently.

I ordered the braised beef noodle bowl. They warned me it was spicy, and I replied, like a moron, 'Give me all that spice, I love it hot." Then the cook naturally wants to make you regret that swaggering statement. And he did, too. Wow, the heat just about tore my head off. Still really good, though. Lots of taste along with all the heat. And a tremendous amount of beef in the serving, which itself was a generous portion. No complaints here, no complaints at all. This little place is a worthy addition to the Asian cuisine lineup in Salem.

Been here a few times and it's been very consistent. Noodles are really tasty, beef is super tender and the soup is just spicy enough without being too spicy. Service is quick and straight forward. You can order on a tablet or through the cashier if you want to pay with cash or have any questions. They offer samples of each of their drinks but I've tried 3 and they've all been great. I've tried the winter melon tea, the passion fruit jasmine tea and the peach oolong tea- all iced teas. They're sweetened already. The restaurant is decorated nicely and they have plenty of seating.

We walked right in, and ordered at the counter. There are 11 tables. Mostly spicy Chinese noodle soups, beef chicken, etc. place is clean and they also have several Asian style cold teas, like milk tea and plum tea. Generous helpings.

The beef noodle soup with the brisket is spicy and the beef is very tender. The crunchy potatoes are a very good side and tasted amazing.

It was a GREAT price for this quality of food, only about 13 dollars total for the noodle bowl and the tea.

Took a couple of minutes for someone to notice me and seat me. It took probably another 20 mins before someone came to take my order. The waiting staff seem a little overwhelmed. But my waiter was nice to answer all my questions and make recommendations. I tried the spicy wonton and the Taiwan Beef noodle soup. The spicy wonton was underwhelming. I specifically asked for no cilantro, and as you can see in the photo, it's covered in cilantro. The sauce was heavy on soy sauce and light on spice. Wontons were ok. At this point I was quite unhappy. Fortunately The beef noodle soup came very quickly and is very flavorful. Probably the redeeming point of the whole meal. The meat was hearty and well cooked. The soup is well balanced. Definitely recommend. So - please add a few more staff members during lunch. I don't think normal folks have that much time to wait during lunch hour.

Inside it's sort of....fake Asian restaurant? Like, it seems to be Chinese food but not from a Chinese Restaurant, except kinda? I don't know. Not that it matters, I just am hard pressed to describe it. The food itself was alright. I had sweet and sour chicken, and my kids had General Tso's. They all came with white rice. It was okay. I mean....it was okay. I wish I could say something more about it. We ate. We got full. We left. We paid 70 bucks, roughly. (for four meals, their friend got an entree but he didn't tell me what he thought about it so I'm not putting his in here). I don't really see going back. But if we wanted Chinese food and were in the area, it's significantly better than Great Wall Buffet. Parking lot is...awkward and cramped. Not very well designed.

I have come to discover that It's not a traditional Chinese dish, but an old-school American Chinese classic that seems to trace back to Cleveland and the broader Midwest. I was glad to see a version of it on the menu as almond chicken. While it wasn't exactly what I remember, it definitely scratched that nostalgic itch. This was solid, old-school American-style Chinese food. I ordered a combo and chose sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice, and added an order of spring rolls. Everything was flavorful, well prepared, and the portions were generous. Best of all, it was reasonably priced. A dependable choice for classic Chinese takeout.

The inside is very spacious too. Again, with the typical red and gold Chinese dragon décor. I love this sort of place. Makes me feel really comfortable. We were seated at a rather economically sized booth. Me and my birthday girl sister's butts barely fit. Me and my parents traveled from Portland to Salem to take my sister out for her birthday lunch and she highly recommended this place. Per usual, there were scads of choices to behold on the menu. My parents shared some sort of beef vegetable dish. My scallop and vegetable plate was wonderful. Usually places are stingy with their scallops. Not here. I had oodles of scallops. Like more than I knew what to do with. I ended up with a to go container. The whole time we were sitting there I kept eyeing the red door that beckoned Lounge on it. My mind imagined all sorts of scenarios going on behind that red door; all of them seedy. Because that's how my mind works. I couldn't wait until we were all boxed up and ready to go so I could check it out. Imagine my surprise: Nothing but good, clean, wholesome, fun happening in there. There's a pool table, folks were eating. A nice gentleman at the bar and a friendly bartender. My fortune cookie was pretty awesome and probably true too. Bravo, Hong Kong House! 2024 - Review # 10
