This is my go to surf shop. I have taken boards here for repair and bought new and used boards…read morefrom them. I find them always very helpful, friendly and honest. Their prices on boards and gear seem fair too. Also, they are also honest with beginners. I chatted with them about it before because I have seen people out on big days with rental boards where honestly it is unsafe for them to be out, but those people rented from a different shop in town. I really appreciate that they won't rent to beginners when conditions are unsafe for them to be out (both for them and for the rest of us).

I want to upgrade my longboard and shortboard so I asked for some guidance on what to look for when I decide to pull the trigger on new boards and Jeremiah did not disappoint. Shared my goals for each type of board and Jeremiah shared his expertise with such a pleasant vibe overall. I took my friend here to rent a wetsuit for her first time in the water too and love that the vibe here is not "too cool for school" and simply pure stoke for surfing with a welcoming attitude, even for those who want to try it out.

On my third lesson there was a scheduling mix-up, I was supposed to meet with another new instructor, and instead of just rescheduling, Alex -- who also works at the shop -- offered to take me out himself rather than let it fall through. He had a good read on me: he sensed that if the lesson got pushed back, I might drop the idea of surfing becoming a real part of my life altogether. He didn't want me to give up on it, so he reworked the shop's schedule to make it work. That lesson completely changed my perspective. Alex has a real gift for seeing people and meeting them exactly where they are -- and I've seen it again and again, not just in that lesson but from spending more time at the shop watching him work with new surfers, surfers visiting from all over, and people who never thought surfing could be for them (I was one of them.) Since that day he accidentally became my instructor, I've had three more lessons with Alex. He's changed my whole attitude toward surfing, helped me buy my first wetsuit, gotten me involved in activities, and I'm hoping we'll collaborate on getting my first custom board. His style of teaching is simple, and it's exactly who he is around the shop -- tailored and personalized, simple and intentional, creative and impactful. Pacifica and this little stretch of coast can feel busy and crowded, but the community here is small, and there are a handful of core people who make it feel special -- for locals, Bay Area natives, and tourists alike. Alex is one of those people. I can't wait to keep growing my love for surfing, be part of the Travelers family, and watch Alex keep being a connector -- for Travelers, for Pacifica, and for surfers everywhere.

So, for that reason, and because I have a son named Maverick, we decided to swing by this surf shop and check it out... We weren't in the market for any surf gear, but they have everything you need here if you are. We enjoyed perusing their store and I ended up purchasing a t-shirt and hat. The other stores in the area were closed for renovation, but if you end up here, eat at nearby Sam's and make an afternoon of it. That's what we did. Enjoy!

Many are sporting fashionable costumes & exuding great confidence. I think. There's also vendors selling food, T-shirts, giving away frisbees, hip packs, keychains, much etc. if you think your dog has what it takes, you must sign a waiver before hitting the waves. Not every dog takes to surf lessons, so what you see are exceptional athletes with good training. Each dog is guided to the crest of a wave, then holds on for the ride to shore. The couple thousand spectators cheer them on. For those not in the know, a Taco Bell sits on the beach itself, providing an awesome view of the activity from the deck. Sooo, arrive early, leave early, to avoid the crazy traffic & lack of parking for this popular event.

Heck yeah, sign me up! There were lots of dogs and their humans all over Pacifica State Beach this past Saturday, for the annual World Dog Surfing Championship. So many dogs doing their thing (ie. peeing in the sand in front of beachgoers, flicking dirt onto people as they dug holes in the sand... but surprisingly not a lot of barking), playing with other dogs, and getting spoiled by dog-lovers with so much attention, as well as toys and treats from vendor tents in the back. There were plenty of items for sale including cute T-shirts from California Canine, and plush squeak toys and travel accessories from P.L.A.Y. (Pet LIfestyles and You). But there was no food for humans for sale at any of the tents, which was odd for this type of event.. not even snacks or drinks. But I guess it's good that the event was located right next to the Taco Bell Cantina. And at least they had porta potties available at the beach near the parking lot. In order to view the actual dog surfing, you had to be in the water, some of us even knee deep. So it's good I wore shorts on this day cuz that made it super fun to get up close and personal with these awesome dogs, some even surfing right toward me as I took photos and cheered them on with the rest of the crowd. The big question we had before attending was, do the dogs really surf by themselves? And how? Well here's how it worked. The dogs were grouped into heats (small, medium, and large dogs... tandem, etc.) Then two or three boards went at a time, near the shoreline of the water. There would be a at least one human at each end (in the water, and near the shoreline) for each dog or pair of dogs. One human was further in the water and would wait for the waves then give the surfboard a push toward the shore once the dog was balanced on it (some dogs even sitting on the board instead of standing), the other human would catch the dog/board on the other end... that is if the dog(s) didn't fall off into the water, or jump off and start running into the crowd. Those that stayed on the surfboard while gliding on the water apparently got more points, since this was a contest and they were being judged. The same dog would have multiple turns over and over, it's like no limit to how many tries... but I think it was mostly to put on a good show for us viewers :D The speaker system wasn't that great, so it was kind of hard to hear the announcers and tell what was going on if you were just lying on the sand, stretched out on your beach blanket or mat, instead of joining the crowds in the water. It would have been better if they had music playing or something like that to make it a little more lively. But it was fun regardless, getting to just relax, lounge, enjoy a picnic and conversation with one of my favorite people. And entertaining enough to watch other people's dogs all throughout the area, and talk to their owners. They also had a fashion show, with dogs wearing fun costumes, some even matching their humans (ie. a couple and their two dogs all dressed like watermelon). Some aspects of this event made it seem somewhat chaotic at times. Parking wasn't too difficult to find in the nearby neighborhood, but traffic was a bit slow and confusing getting there. Also, volunteers/staff at the event often yelled to tell people to make space for the surf dogs on the sand, like they were walking the red carpet or somethin, and judges yelled to tell people in the water to move, if the dog ended up floating in your direction while "surfing". There probably could have been a little bit better organization, but I actually liked the subtle chaos and unpredictability, I mean as long as the dogs were having fun, and they had safety measures in place for everyone (police, fire truck, first aid, medic truck), attendees, especially dog-lovers, had a lot to appreciate about this unique and free event on the beach! We certainly had a good time :)

My friend stayed here right before we had Pg@e shutting all the power off. She's in a wheelchair and obviously needs to use the elevator . Had they warned her as she was checking in about the power outage she would've gone elsewhere . They knew about the power outage at least three days ahead of time . Don't you think they would've told her the power was going to go out ? Did they even think about it as they checked her in ? So power goes out . The elevators don't work , the emergency doors don't open , and not one employee Checked to see if they needed anything . In fact, her Daughter tried to go get some food . She couldn't even get out of the hotel ! She finally found an employee who let her out . She came back and couldn't get back in. Finally found an employee who let her in. Thank God there wasn't a fire ! Lighthouse Hotel ! Get a clue !! She was stuck in there for almost two days .

The only barrier to me going more is that it is so expensive for one lesson (over $300). The instructor explained the super high cost of the foil itself, so I understand the need to increase the lesson price. I would love to do this more regularly, but cannot for this reason. I decided to splurge on the first lesson and was gifted the second lesson. We put in at Crane Cove Park. I have been there many times but never swam in the water. I was outfitted with a wetsuit, helmet, and booties. I never felt cold while in the water. During my first lesson, they connected this radio to the helmet so I could speak to the instructor while out. It was super helpful because he could give me real-time feedback. In my second lesson, they did not have radios, so it was harder to communicate during the lesson. It really is so fun to foil, and I highly recommend it to anyone who might want to give it a try. If you wanted to feel comfortable doing it, unless you regularly surge/skateboard, it would probably take 3-5 lessons before you are zooming around standing completely, so definitely factor that in when it comes to cost.

If I could give them no stars, I would. I bought a sweatshirt there to give to my sister. When I went to wrap it to mail it to her, I noticed this stripe of what looked like store dust across the back. I tried to brush it off but it didn't come off. I started sort of picking at it with my fingernails and realized it was an adhesive, or glue, like the stuff they use to silk-screen stuff onto the shirt. Obviously, their silk screener is sloppy and gets the glue everywhere. After working at it for a long time, I couldn't get it off so I washed it. It NEVER CAME OFF. So, I figured I should bring it back to try to exchange it (much as I didn't want to set foot in there ever again), and prepared for a battle... you know shops like this won't stand by their products, they just want to make the sale and never see your face again. I showed the girl, and asked to exchange, and she seemed like she would have let me... but one of the young guys with 'tude comes in and says "Oh, we won't let you exchange, you washed it." I showed them the glue (on every single one of the sweatshirts I pulled off the shelf) and they said "Oh that's just dust! Brush it off." I'm like, "You can't brush it off, try doing it yourself," and he gave it the effort of a 3-year-old (his mentality) and said "It's fine." Oh, it was so NOT fine. The stuff did not come off when he brushed it and he knew it. The glue is not designed to come off when you WASH the thing, or DUH the logo will come off. The glue is water-proof. So, stand by your product! give me something in exchange that's worth the $40, no matter how small-shop you are. Anyway, I was chided by a third salesman (the manager?) stating "We'll exchange it this time, but in the future we will not let you bring back something you've washed." I understand the need for this policy, in a small shop like this. Believe me! But when #1 they have sold me a defective product, and #2 I'm basically told by a lame "sales" dude that I am wrong when I definitely am RIGHT, I have no sympathy for their poor little store -- and I definitely have nothing nice to say. NorCal has very little hope of ever making enough money to remain lucrative, with sales guys like that; lucky for them they have the surf rental shop to keep them afloat. Do not purchase anything from them. As a local (to Pacifica), I will not set foot in this place ever again, and will bring my business and steer all of my friends to Sonlight and HMB Board Shops. I have also shopped at O'Neill's and Rip Curl in Santa Cruz, and their salesperson attitudes are pleasant and helpful. The customer service at these places is superior, and when NorCal goes out of business I will have no sympathy. read more

i figured since this was a "surf shop" it would be a good place to go to pick up some gear and get surfing information. apparently to get good service here, you need to be 19 years old, stoned, and sit next to the cashier in remedial english at the local junior college. ive never had a sales attendant be so rude to me... in fact, i don't think i've ever had ANYONE be so rude to me. yes, i am a beginner surfer - SORRY! i apologize for this terrible sin. but i dont need some punk rubbing it in my face and being sarcastic when i am just trying to get help. I took my first surf lesson a few weeks ago in Pacifica with Adventure Out (see my review about them) - they were AWESOME. My mistake for thinking all surfers would be that nice. read more

In March I started surf lessons with James Tolentino from Hawaii and have continue till now . He's an amazingly knowledgeable teacher. I was up and surfing after my first lesson. James is clear, patient, and totally knows his stuff from the pop-up to timing a wave. Now that I've surfed the big wave there's only one thing to say, "thanks dude." James rocks and so do all the staff at NorCal. They are friendly, helpful, and always interested in your progress. They're never pushy but just ready to help. Coming from Hawaii and walking in to NorCal is like walking into the spirit of Aloha. Just google aloha and you'll know what I mean. Keep it up guys! read more

I have been trying to send a review on this Great Establishment. For two years they have been nothing less than great, from Son, daughter and my first lesson from Rob through my Son buying his first Surf Board, maybe that's why I was there this morning after surfing. I remembered my Son deciding on his first board and how patient they were, he is in Afghanistan and I can't wait for us to go back to NorCal. We had a great family session with Rob. Getting a big cold in October, but was good all the same. Patrick made us feel welcome right from stepping through the door. Great shop, loads of gear and clothes. Back of shop is a little run down behind the scenes, but no impact on our experience. They rent boards and wetsuits and offer lessons. We chose these guys long distance from London and made surfing part of our family holiday and it was a morning well spent. Highly recommended, all apart from the rest room which could do with a serious deep clean and some renovation. read more

Dont pay with cash if your not sure of your purchase. They dont refund you only store credit, even tho i bought it the same day literally a few hours before. This place is a revolving door business so its not like there hard up for cash. Lame business policy, even had my receipt and never wore the stupid sweater. Place sucks in my opinion bunch of trendy stuck up surfers. Only stopped there to grab a sweater because it was cold. Id rather freeze than give them my business. I just moved to Pacifica to be closer to the ocean and learn how to surf. I went to Norcal where everyone says to go. I've never had the worst experience in my life. They are all JERKS! If you decide you want to spend your money in this type of economy you should really really think twice about spending your hard earned cash or time here. They suck. I don't know if these peaople are being paid to put these positive type of reviews but for sure I will be telling all my friends and people to stay clear of this place. In regards to John C. If you can't tell a board has or has not been buckled before maybe you should stick to buying brand spankin new boards. Its no ones fault but your own if you snap your board. Nor-Cal is great and they do so much for the community of surfers and skaters in the area. For someone who's lived up and down this coast my whole life it's great to have a shop like this. Sorry this is my first yelp. I can't stand someone blaming a shop or employee because they snapped their board. It happens get over it! read more

Amazing shop and employees! Patrick and the man with the solid stache were extremely friendly and helpful during my visit. Being somewhat new to surfing, they were nice enough to show me everything from A-Z and answer any stupid questions I had. Patrick showed me a few boards out of their big collection (new & used) and ended up going with a 7'6" Torq. Couldn't be happier with it. Big thumbs up & RIP mini ramp. read more

Keith was a great instructor. It was a rainy morning and the waves were a bit rougher than normal. He worked with my 2 daughters and got them up on the boards a few good times despite the conditions. My daughters had a blast! The surf shop staff was friendly and chatty and we enjoyed the discount they offered at the shop post lesson. Would highly recommend! read more

Worker let's his dog poop in parking lot. Will never shop here again can't believe this shop allows its employee to keep a dog off a leash and poop in parking lot all day and never picks it up. Watched it first hand when did it become ok to let your 20 pound benji dog poop in parking lots and leave it. What a joke. Have some respect the guy should be fired. read more

Great place with local surfers helping direct and run the show for us kooks. That big guy Mia set my family up with a surf lesson and wet suits. My suit kinda was tight but kept me warm. My daughter stood up on her first wave and then I enjoyed a beer at the brew pub on the corner. I would recommend this place for anyone needing to learn to surf. read more

Loved Rod and the Shop. After 20 years of snowboarding these guys were able to get me on the water and made fall in with it. Not badly priced either!. Called these guys when I was on my way over to Half Moon Bay on a Tuesday afternoon. They said they…read morehad plenty of bikes available for rent and to come on down! I was in and out with a rental bike and guidance on which direction to head in for a nice ride within minutes of arriving. Super quick and easy experience. Paid $25 plus tax for about 3 hours of ride time (all that was left in the day). Got in a great 16.75 mile ride and turned the bike in just as easily as I rented it. Note that all available rental bikes are single speed and you reverse the pedals to brake (not handle bar brakes). I was reluctant at first but the trail is easy enough and a single speed bike was you need! Oh and they'll let ya borrow a helmet if you forget to bring yours ;)

Twice when my cousins, nieces, and nephew from Stockton came with me to Half Moon Bay to boogie board Lucy has been very accommodating to them. The price to rent a wetsuit is $10 a day. That's a price you can't beat. It's a small shop yet if you plan to rent wetsuits or boogie boards this store has more than enough to suit your needs. I can't say anymore how Lucy has provided great service for me. All I can say is thanks Lucy for always helping me.

Joey was communicative, prompt, encouraging, flexible (met me at a different spot that worked better for me), technical, and answered all my questions - all while maintaining a laid back vibe. I felt much more confident being in the water (OB, no less) and on the board by the end of our lesson! Would highly recommend!

The first thing I did when I found out I was going to San Francisco for the first time was book a…read moresurf lesson, and I am really glad I did. Communication and planning with Joey beforehand was super easy, and he met me at the beach with a board and wet suit ready to go first thing in the morning the day of. We covered some on land basics and then headed into the water. He picked waves, helped push me into them, and i even managed to stand up a few times on the board!! We chatted a bunch about how to read the water, time the waves, how to maneuver yourself and the board if bigger waves are coming in while youre trying to go out. I was comically bad, but he was encouraging the whole time. And i feel prepared enough to pick out a board and try some non guided surfing at my local east coast beaches! All in all great experience for something I've wanted to do for a long time.
