I have been a Customer at Norfolk Vet for about 8 years and to be honest, have never been that impressed with the customer service I received, and the Dr's bedside manners as they say. within the last 2 months I learned, my dog is in active heart failure. I had called the office Monday, twice, and was told each time Dr McCabe is not in today, however, another Veterinarian on call would call me back, regarding a very important issue. I did not receive a call back, so on my way home I decided to stop by the office. I was met with the front desk staff, who was very rude, and told me the Veterinarian that is on call couldn't "speak" to me because my dog is not "her patient". I then asked if that was the case, which sounds ridiculous and a complete excuse of the Drs. negligence, why wasn't I told that when I called twice. Staff then assured me that I would receive a call the following morning from my Vet. I waited for 1.5 hours following morning for the call that never came. I called the office and was told she was seeing patients. I am beyond shocked that this is how the staff operates, Vets included. it is now 5 hours after I called, 3 times within 24 hours, and not one Vet has got back to me. Mind you my call was very important regarding my dog's active heart failure and cardiac cachexia. DR McCabe is heartless, ignorant, and downright rude. She has zero empathy, and her staff is the same. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE. I have another dog who is 3 and after this experience I am looking for a new Vet ASAP. read more

We were happy taking our dog and cat there...until Dr. Dabas left. Since then, we have seen other vets and have been deeply disappointed. I brought my cat in when she was very sick and the vet only seemed interested in giving her a battery of tests and not in treating my cat. Despite my questions about how to make my cat comfortable and what I could do to help my cat in the meantime, the vet only cared about testing and it felt like upselling. $600 later, the test returned with no diagnosis and my cat simply got well on her own. A friend had a similar situation with her cat and their vet tried to help them with various suggestions for the cat's well-being -- suggestions I've also adopted for my cat. The last vet we saw also didn't seem to be good at her job -- she just phoned it in. It was a wellness visit and I asked about what supplements I could give to my arthritic and aging cat to help her feel more comfortable. She told me to give her fish oil. When I mentioned that my cat sometimes gets upset stomach after eating too much fish, and asked about collagen and other supplements, she shrugged it off and gave me no other answer. She was more concerned about whether I wanted to give my cat a test for her kidney function, despite no signs of trouble. I've since started my cat on Glycoflex and hyaluronic acid supplements, which worked well for our dog. I happy to say that she's improved, but it's no thanks to the vet. This last visit was also during the pandemic and the vet was unmasked, with the waiting room was packed with unmasked people. I've asked around and have been told that other practices continue to mask and practice distancing protocols. I followed up and asked the practice about this and they say that it was OK under Charlie Baker's vaccination policy. I said that the policy applied to vaccinated humans, but that dogs and cats are unvaccinated and can be exposed to COVID. She was dismissive, then said she would mention it to the head vet. [A veterinary practice should follow the science in the best interest of their patients, not just blindly rely on the Governor's policy for public gathering of people. Other practices seem to be doing it right.] In addition to these incidents, it just seems that they're only interested in selling, not concerned with the well-being of their patients. I didn't realize this until after Dr. Dabas left and we started seeing other vets there. I shouldn't be getting better advice from Helpful Vancouver Vet on YouTube than our own veterinary practice. Needless to say, we're changing practices. I miss Dr. Dabas and I will miss Don at reception, as well as a couple of the techs, but I have to do what's best for my pets. read more

Without a doubt - the most caring and knowledgeable vet I have ever been to. Dr. Poor took care of our dog for many years and her love and compassion for him personally was everything I could have ever asked for in a vet. Great staff - always willing to help out and go the extra mile. I am incredibly thankful that Dr. Poor was by my side as we helped our 15 year old baby cross the rainbow bridge. We have been going to Norfolk County Vet for 10 years. They are wonderful, helpful and realistic. I can not say enough about Dr. Poor and Dr. Illovich. They know our dogs, and our family. I could go on and on how helpful and empathetic they were when it was time to let our golden go. They were with me every step of the way. In my opinion they have turned their business into a family. Some reviews have mentioned pricing. I find NCV extremely reasonable. When we got our puppy 11 years ago we were going to West Roxbury for our vet needs. The prices were through the roof there. We've been using Norfolk Veterinary Service since we got our two Devon Rex kittens in 2006. Everyone there has been great. A couple of years ago, when one of our cats got sick, they did everything they could. We were even able to arrange to get one of the techs to come by our house (We're on her way to work, sort of) to help us give meds to our extremely fussy and very sick kitty. Unfortunately, what was wrong couldn't be fixed and Aran passed, but it wasn't for want of good care. We've continued to use them and I think we know most of the people there by now. They continue to take good care of Sam and of our latest adoption, Sofia. It's clear they all love animals, especially cats. I do wish they had a larger space so they could provide quieter accomodations for pets that have to stay there. But that's really my only criticism. read more

Hello. We unfortunately had to bring our beloved boxer here for failing health and we were extremely appreciative of how our family was treated. Dr. Poor was very clear with the options available to us. We requested a blood test to see if there was something that could be treated. After coming back negative, Dr Poor gave my wife, children, and I all the time we wanted to say our last good byes. And once my wife and children left, the whole staff was great at making sure that my dog and I were comfortable during his last moments. Everyone here loves and cares deeply for animals. We're new to the area and this practice, but we've brought in our newest dog Donna several times. We adopted her as an older, former breeding dog and she had some problems from the start. Dr. Tami Ilovich is awesome. She's the only vet we've seen, although a different vet performed Donna's spay (I didn't meet her, but she did a good job). Dr. Tami is thorough, but I never get the sense that she's trying to find ways to rack up the bill. She is also receptive to putting reasonable limits on expenses. For example, Donna had a spot on her stomach. We let Dr. Ilovich test for fungal and bacterial infections, and mites. Dr. Illovich offered for us to try a special prescription shampoo while we wait for the test results to come back in a few days, but we thought it might be a waste of money. She didn't push it on us or make us feel bad for passing on the shampoo. Ultimately, Donna had a fungal infection and Dr. Ilovich recommended a cheap over the counter topical, which saved us a lot of money. As for prices of service, they're not much higher than the prices I've paid at other vets. I guess the difference is with the example above, my former vet would have said "Eh, the spots on Donna might be nothing, come back in a few weeks and we'll test it" whereas this vet said "Okay, let's not waste anyone's time. Let's test it now and determine what it is." I appreciate that in a vet, but yeah, being thorough will probably cost you more. The front desk staff are very helpful and responsive, and if you sit in the lobby long enough you'll see their personalities come out. The only con is that each time I've come, they're running late and I have to wait anywhere from 5-35 minutes. read more

Reading some of the other reviews made me sad, because pets are family members and I feel horrible for anyone who has had a bad experience with a vet, especially in a time of need. My experience with this vet though has been wonderful. They love cats and take great care of my two. When my cats were kittens, one of them was quite sick and she was assessed and on medicine immediately and she bounced back. We had both spayed/neutered here and everything went perfectly. Their prices are definitely very expensive, but high quality care is worth the high price tag for me when it comes to caring for Maddy and Batman. read more

We started going to Norfolk County Vet Service 10+ years ago when our former Vet down the road did all of the things stated in the lower ratings and more, including trying to make me feel guilty for not taking my dog to an eye specialist to spend thousands of dollars on an operation that was for purely cosmetic reasons. That's when I said forget that high falutin' place...next! Everything has been wonderful with NCVS. We were shocked by the price difference (much cheaper). Dr. Marks got us through chemo with our Samoyed and was with us when she needed to go. He even sent a donation in her name to a vet school I believe. We chose to try the chemo. There was no push either way. I know that if we decided to skip it and put her down sooner that it would have been just as kind. Tests have NEVER been done without asking and always given the options. Dr. Poor and Bergeron try to keep it to a minimum and just rule out the basics before going into any other testing if necessary. I've asked for more from their options to set my mind at ease sometimes. Our other Samoyed had been hit by a car and had been looking like she might make it. I got a call from Dr. Poor while I was on my way somewhere. She had a tech holding the phone for her while she kept Tasha's heart going with her hands. She was not going to let her go without me knowing and giving it the OK even though there wasn't anything really that could be done. I guess that it was a way for me to be there with Tasha in a way. The Vet Techs are absolutely WONDERFUL!! They have seen our animals through the good, the bad and the ugly. They do take the brunt of that for sure. God bless them for all the nasty behind the scenes things that they have to do and clean up. read more

I can't recommend Norfolk County Veterinary Service. They have taken wonderful care of our dog, Lucie, since she was a 2-month-old puppy. While taking care of a trusted friend's older dog for a few months, we took him to NCVS for a few appointments. The staff was absolutely great, and when we got our puppy a few months later we knew that we had her vet already lined up. Would not have gone anywhere else. Don, at the front desk, is extremely kind and caring, and absolutely loves the animals that come in; the staff are extremely kind, responsive (over the phone if any concerns arise, etc.), and fair. Lucie has been cared for by a number of the staff, and each has been great; Meredith Leoni has been especially great. It's a shame that we're moving cross-country, because this would be our vet without question for the long haul. We live in a pet-friendly apartment building in Walpole, just down the street, and a number of our friends here take their dogs to NCVS. All great experiences. read more

After 4 years of going here, I'll never go back after today's visit with Dr. Tami. I've been bringing my dog to this vet for everything since he was a puppy because my best friend recommended Dr. Poor. For the first couple of years I had OK experiences with Dr. Poor but it seems as though once my dog grew up, she became weary of him which was very disappointing. He never had a bad day at the vet, never growled or snapped at anyone there, was usually pretty happy to be there up until a couple years ago, the vibe changed and he started to get really nervous when we would go. The last few appointments have really put me off of this place. First, they'd started each appointment asking me if my dog needed a muzzle. I had been taking him there since he was 3 months old, and he never had a muzzle (they never even mentioned the word) or issues so this was confusing and a complete turn off. Today we had an annual exam and I heard Dr. Tami outside the door day "UM-I need help." As if she looked at the sheet, saw what dog was the patient, and thought "oh, it's THIS dog....call for backup." Then of course she starts the appointment with the muzzle question and I'm thinking to myself, obviously you think it's necessary and are going to muzzle him anyway so let's get it over with. I should have just left like I wanted to. Then she weighs my dog, feels around, gives him his rabies shot and tries shoving me out the door! Saying "OK, well, I really tried to make this fast because ya know..." like not even 5 minutes of being there she said it 2-3 times "ok- tried to make it quick for you" as if I had requested her to hurry?!?! No, she just wanted it to be over. She tried to push me out before she even took my dogs blood! I had to ask her "what about the Lyme and heart worm test?" Then she looked on her sheet (one page mind you) and was like "OH! Yeah we'll have to put the muzzle back on" and opened the door to call her backup back in. So she went outside quickly and I put the muzzle on him myself just to hurry the process and she came back in, astounded that I had the muzzle on and very obviously relieved that she didn't have to do it. "OH you got it on!" Like yeah, dude, I got the muzzle on and my ferocious dog didn't attack me.... yay... anyway - I'm so disappointed and quite frankly disgusted with how Dr.Tami treated me and my pet. She was also condescending and rude when I asked questions and blisters on my dogs paws. She rolled her eyes and needed more info, but wouldn't even go near him to check. If you're scared of certain breeds (my dogs a pit bull) then why accept patients of those breeds? It's off-putting and and really terrible to treat a loyal customer of 4 years that way. I'll never go back to a place like this - a place where my dog is not wanted. read more

This used to be such a wonderful place. Dr. Marks was a great vet. Then Dr. Poor replaced him. She is absolutely horrible. Not only are their prices terrible, but she will not take the time to properly test an animal. She blindly diagnosed my dog with a back issue. She had nothing to base it off of. She took no x-rays and no blood tests, and prescribed the medication that killed her. Then had the audacity to look me in the eye and tell me I had no right to be rude to her while she watched my dog die on her floor. Nobody should ever take an animal here. read more

Unfortunately, this practice has severely declined in the care & customer service over several years. I've been taking my pup there since I got her at 8 wks.- she is now 12 yrs. I've always felt they were quite expensive, (extra testing, freq. visits for the same issue of hot spots etc, why not give refillable meds for the same long term problem? - but they always made me go in & get charged more). Though did have trust back in those early years, over recent years some staff are uncaring, unhelpful & actually rude, which is why after 12 yrs.!!! Dr. Poor also has major issues with being unhelpful giving out scripts for Costco to fill, at a much cheaper price. I was forced to drive (20 mins each way) to pick up a script b/c the staff refused to fax it to Costco. They said it was a "pain" so I needed to come in. I am stunned at the treatment. Totally being intentionally mean- the woman on the phone enjoyed the power she had to inconvenience me & also made it so I had to wait until the next day to get the script filled. This is not acceptable treatment. What kind of customer service is that? HORRIBLE!!!! I am happy to leave that rude & uncaring place. read more

I started with Dr. Crowley, when she was at the Abington Animal Hospital. She had been treating my yellow lab, Fischer for years, and is simply the best. Even though I lived in South Weymouth, I opted to drive to Walpole to stay with Dr. Crowley, simply because she is the most compassionate, caring, knowledgeable vet. Last December, my dog was diagnosed with cancer, and had to have part of his foot amputated. Since then we also discovered several tumors, and he was unfortunately too old (12 and heavily arthritic) for more procedures. We kept him going with love and pain medications. Dr. Crowley was so attentive and caring, and made sure that Fischer was not in pain and still had a quality life while the end was nearing. She often called to check in to see how we were all doing. Fischer went to sleep earlier this month, and again Dr. Crowley was there was us. Although a horrible situation, she made is so much more tolerable. I truly believe she cared for Fischer and family, and was sad at his passing. I also have to say that all of the staff were outstanding, whenever we came to visit. They treat your pet and you like family. The last day, we all knew it was possible that Fischer may not be coming home. Three of them met us at our car with a stretcher, and they just treated Fischer and us with so much kindness and compassion. Also, I did not experience any unnecessary tests, and were informed at all times what was happening. I actually found their rates competitive with other places. When/if I am ready for another pet, I will definitely go to Norfolk for care. read more

First visit. Took my cat for a rabies shot. No pre-questioning about her health or habits. Yes, my cat is excitable, but I felt everything the vet and tech vet did made my cat more and more anxious as the visit progressed. No compassion here. Suggested sedation for future visits. My cat is 13 years old and has never had to be sedated. I would say this was not a cat friendly doctor. read more

I was really disappointed at this vet. I took my dog there for an ear infection because my regular vet had emergency surgery. The staff was nice enough but the veterinarian did the absolute minimum. She looked only looked in his ears- didn't check him anywhere else or check even check his temp which I have always had done at any other office and thought was pretty standard for when they are sick. She came back to tell us he had a bad ear infection but if she wanted us to have her clean out his ear there would be an additional charge for it. Which I thought was outrageous. Aren't we taking our dog to the vet to get treatment? Does it really cost you more money to clean out his ear? I'm glad he was able to get a prescription but $160 dollars to just look in his ear and prescribe medication (which was cheaper than the actual office visit) is insane. Clearly this establishment is only there to make money. Needless to say we won't be going back there. read more

Not sure where they found these people, but how ignorant and rude they were! After our previous vet sold her practice, we were disappointed with the service so decided to try out this place. What a mistake that was. We have three dogs and brought one in to do an initial physical. We got there at our scheduled appointment time and sat there waiting, and waiting, and (oh yes!) waiting some more. After over a half hour, we asked if there was usually this long of a wait to be seen by the vet. The woman got all indignant and told us that the vet had four emergency surgeries that morning (something that probably should have been mentioned to us when we walked in). Even a phone call in the morning would have been nice so we could reschedule. But no..they leave us sitting there and would have left us there ALL DAY. A minute later, the other woman at the desk told us we could go into the room, where we waited and waited and waited some more. They must have been happy to have tossed us into another room where they wouldn't have to look at us. We waited for over an HOUR with no sign of the vet and no updates. We finally took our dog and left. On our way out, Jackie at the desk was even more rude and clearly didn't care at all that we had wasted our Saturday afternoon sitting there for nothing. Neither one knew anything about customer service and seemed annoyed we had decided to leave. My dog peed on the floor on the way out (even SHE was annoyed!) and when we mentioned it to the woman she handed us a roll of paper towels over the counter without saying anything. Not that I mind cleaning up after my dog, but at least my last vet would take care of that for you. After waiting for a few minutes because there was no trash nearby, the woman holds up her trash. Neither said anything to us on the way out. We cancelled our other dog's appointment we had scheduled and won't be back. We have three dogs so this place will be missing out on a lot of business. Won't be back here and the search for a decent vet continues... Will be reading reviews BEFORE trying the next one. read more

Please dont take your animal to this place. They are rude and unprofessional. Frankly i always thought people cared more about animals because they cant talk for themselve; not this organization. My cat was suffering and they would not see me because it was near five. The Dr wanted to go home. I begged for help as my cat i loved was dieing in my arms. Then she wanted to know if i had cash. I was frantic, she put me on hold. Ten minutes later someone picked up the phone and told me the Dr left but if the cat lived over night call them tomorrow. I love Dr. Poor. She is highly qualified and a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. She is very thorough and compassionate. Dr. Poor does not do unnecessary tests to bump up the bill, and does not give a dog any shots or chemicals that are not necessary. The staff is also excellent and very kind, especially when we had to make the difficult decision to put our beloved dog to sleep. She made the experience as peaceful and painless as possible. As a person who believes in only the best for my dogs, I highly recommend Dr. Poor. read more

She made herself available 24/7 for the week leading up to this and helped us through the toughest time. If you didn't have a great experience speak up - don't write a trashy review on Yelp. They are customer service focused and LOVE animals and would never go out of their way to misinform, judge, or mislead anyone ! PETS ARE EXPENSIVE. You want cheap service? The new doctors are simply in this for the money and do not care AT ALL about the animals. I guess they need to pay for their addition to the building somehow. Over the past three years I have been dealing with her, she has shown herself to be extremely knowledgeable, rational,compassionate and she always puts the well being of my cats above all else. She has never suggested tests unnecessarily, and has actually talked me (aka the worrywart pet owner) out of some on a few occasions. I signed up as a yelper once I read the reviews posted here. I was at NCVS last night and got the great service, kindness, honesty, and care for my crazy cat Squeaky that I have always received for all my cats...first from Dr. Marks and now from Dr. Poor, Dr. Bergeron, and Dr. Dubas. My experience with the entire staff from front desk to the docs has always been great. I have been thru euthanizing an animal there: was given time with my Emmy before and after, was given the option of leaving through an alternate door, and received a card after. Have been through surgeries with them, testing, etc. and trust them completely. I am grateful that they are straight shooters when it comes to outcomes and pros and cons of testing. I agree with Brian, no unnecessary testing ever done: and you always have a choice! BTW, If you had the same things done at Angell (tests, surgery, treatment, meds), where they require you to pay prior to surgery, the costs would be astronomical. Re Jazons comments: People are not allowed to go downstairs as surgeries take place there, animals are kept overnight. It is key that the patients downstairs remain calm. I can't imagine letting a family member accompany a doc or a tech. My pets have received shots in the room and in alternate rooms. They do what they think is best at the time-- and I respect that. Doctors fees on top of shots make sense. It is a business after all. She is a wonderful veterinarian and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Stay clear of this practice if you love your pet. I had a very negative experience with their administrative staff and head of the practice. I called asking for some general information and for estimates because I was trying to get medical attention for my dog. I already had a pretty good idea of what was going on. I just needed to know the upfront costs associated with with all the tests and treatment and wanted to know a worst case estimate. They wanted me to come in and pay for tests to tell me what I already knew. They couldn't tell me any of the other costs except for the initial consultation. Which was actually quite low $58. Nice try (reel me in, hey we got a real big one here) well this conversation is over. I called two other places and got two estimates upfront. This is just bad business practice. Shame on them. To add further insult to injury they sent me a post card the next day stating bring this card in and we'll give you $20.00 off your fist exam. I was livid. I called them explained who I was and questioned why they did what they did and asked them to take me off their mailing list and asked them why they sent me this card when they did not offer to help me? After I questioned them about it and explained how insulting this was to me they hung up on me. Immediately called back and the same person answers on speaker phone and pretends she didn't just speak to me two seconds ago. I repeated my complaint and requested another time that they take me off their mailing list and confirm that they would..it was just dead silence..This was a Very Bad Initial Experience. They should not be in business if this is how they treat potential new clients I can't imagine how they treat their animals. Anyone writing positive reviews must be working for them. read more
