This is a happily funky little place with great breakfast burritos, chai, coffee and more. I love that they are local. They stepped up during the horrendous fires in Santa Cruz and started a program so people could donate free coffee by paying ahead. They also offered some free soap, toothpaste and other needed things. Just a great place, particularly before or after a bike ride at Nisene Marks to hang out and enjoy the day. read more

We recently spent two weeks in Aptos and went to Norma Jeans about ten times for my morning cup. Had fun sampling some of the pour overs with the Italian being my personal favorite. The place is managed poorly :( They ask different prices for the same products (poor employees training), and you'll get different food, based on the chef working at the time. This place may be local but there is no loyalty to town within that coffee shop. You talk to anyone who frequents the place and non of them have a standing relationship with the owner. Been living in Aptos for years and walked by & visited that shop numerous times, the owners personality is crude and seems like she hates her life. Never thought of going to a coffee shop with a rude and harassing service person especially if she decides she doesn't like you, even if you buy the shitty food. I really want to like this place, because I occasionally need somewhere to relax while my car is being worked on across the street and I'd rather patronize a local coffeeshop over starbucks. But I must say that the service is disappointing at best. Today I asked for my tea in a "for here" mug and she still tried to sell me a to-go cup. I said, "I just hate to waste a cup when I'm going to be drinking it right here." I then asked for a glass for water instead of the styrofoam cups they had by the jug & she seemed thoroughly confused. I again explained that I didn't need to waste a cup and she rolled her eyes while getting me a hot glass from the back. Is it really that high-maintenance to expect mugs and glasses for here? Even if she felt that way, couldn't she at least pretend to maintain some semblance of customer service & make fun of me behind closed doors? Very poor service, cold stale coffee. I was excited to try Norma Jean's Coffee since it is on my way to the Aptos Polo Grounds Dog Park. The shop was empty when I entered and I waited a minute for the Barista to appear. I asked about house coffees and was directed to labels above thermoses of brewed coffee, house, kona, and decaf. I ordered a medium coffee ($1.75) and was handed a cup by the Barista who promptly disappeared. The first thermos of coffee was empty and the second too cool to be fresh. Disappointed, I called into the back space of the kitchen in search of help. Again after a minutes wait the girl appeared. I informed her that the coffee was empty and cold. Generally very welcoming employees, one young lady in particular named Bella who is always extremely kind and friendly, the type of person who can really brighten your day with just a short interaction. Only suggestion for the management is that sometimes the employees seem to be so busy with side preparatory work that the customers are no longer the top priority and also it seems like the employees are often too busy to be able to take a break as required by law, would encourage management to ensure that they are sufficiently staffed and consistently providing breaks in accordance with the law. read more

After trying so hard to find some breakfast foods over the years (places have either closed or been overcrowded) when we are traveling to La Selva, it was sheer luck that we stumbled across this gem. Not only where the people super friendly the food choices were just what everyone in my family was looking for. There were breakfast croissants and burritos, smoothies, bagels, fruit, desserts (chocolate twist croissants are to die for) and even some deviled eggs. The main guy was also supportive of my parents who prefer to drink out of ceramic cups rather than disposable ones. Yecchh. Ordered a latte, got bitter brown water with a pile of over- steamed foam on top. Took one sip and left it on the counter. The scone tasted like plaster-of-paris. Honestly, when are these places going to learn that if you claim to serve coffee, it's more than just owning an espresso machine. I think the quality of the espresso varies from barista to barista, though, as we came back a few days later and were less impressed.
