This coffee house is up the stairs near the Margaritaville restaurant. It has a fisherman type ambiance and decor and has an outdoor small patio with a few tables with an amazing view of the water and Capitola. We went to the counter, and I believe it was the owner who waited on us. He was a one-man show, taking our orders and making the drinks as well, but we didn't wait too long for our order. My friend and I had lattes, and they were good. There are also some nice looking treats in the case there, but we had just had lunch so we didn't try those. Charming, local, and cozy! I'm visiting Capitola and stopped by for a coffee. The location is amazing because it overlooks the ocean. It's on the second floor of the building, lending itself to beautiful views. I was also greeted by lovely baristas who really bring a laid back and easygoing energy to the cafe. Great little coffee shop with great vibes and views! We've been coming to Capitola over the past 4 years or so and never knew this spot existed. We've even ate next door and had no clue. While looking for a pick me up, I saw it on maps and had to check it out. It's up a tall flight of stairs and is surprisingly larger inside than you might imagine. Lots of comfortable seating inside and tables. The rear patio is very small with a few tables, but the views are awesome if you can grab a table. I got a Brown Sugar latte and it was solid. Could have been a touch sweeter, but it was definitely a good drink. Wife tried some iced tea and kiddo got a cider. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and it was a nice spot to relax. I'll definitely grab another coffee on my next visit. Location is awesome, especially as we stayed in the village. Coffee was good, but I'll have to try a pastry next time. Everyone's really nice and it seems to be a locals' favorite. We walked in on a beautiful Monday morning and were immediately greeted by the friendly gals working the counter, who asked if we were ready to order. The café had a happy, welcoming vibe with soft music playing in the background. I ordered a nonfat latte with a croissant. The croissant was incredibly fresh, and the coffee was strong and excellent. We needed our caffeine fix and a bite to eat so we walked to Mr. Toots around 11am. It's a cute little coffee shop above one of the local restaurants, reached by ascending a few stairs through a very small entrance. We got a few coffees and bagels and we really wanted to love it after all the great reviews. Unfortunately, we found the barista's were a bit disinterested, the coffee was mediocre, the bagels looked like they were from Costco, and everything was overpriced. A lot of the tables seemed very old and wobbly, and there were lots of flies buzzing about. The view from their balcony was nice, but there's only room for a handful of people. It might be the right place for some as I see the potential of how it's set up, but I don't think we'll return. read more

I came here because of the positive reviews below...but am shocked people like this place: Not Kid Friendly -they have books for kids -but I witnessed one of the baristas scream at a little girl who had spilled her hot chocolate and ask the girl and her mom to leave (CRAZY!) Mr Toots is one of my two favorite coffeehouses in the Santa Cruz county, and that says a lot because I have been to hundreds! Okay not really hundreds, but it feels that way. Mr Toots is definitely the most charming and unique of the all. When I have out-of-town visitors, this is the coffeehouse I take them to. The baristas are extremely friendly, like I've walked into their kitchen and they're making me a drink or telling me about the latest cake. The place has couches and comfy seating. There are furniture cases of jewelry from local artists and cute little fun thingamabobs to buy and look at, like stickers and clever signs, on counters and walls everywhere you look. There are even books on bookshelves and games. You'll find college students studying, professionals on laptops, families with young children and people with their dogs. It's a very eclectic place with eclectic people. There's a small deck that looks out at the famous houses at the Capitola beach (see photo). There are only 3 or so small tables there so more often than not, they will be occupied, however it is still worth a peek at the view. It is so pretty! I love it here and can't say enough great things about it. read more

You need to enjoy their teas, coffee and baked goods to be sure. What you really need to do is meet the Barista that was serving all of these fine features. She's amazing. She also did it alone! This woman can handle a steady stream of customers, engage in charming conversations and ENJOY all of it simultaneously. As an added bonus, you can select from books that are stocked for your reading pleasure, play a table game or just sit out and watch the beachcombers playing outside of the deck. They could use a little more space, but that just might ruin the vibe. You get energized by more than the coffee and cookies at a place like this. =) read more

What an institution! I've been coming here for decades, and still love the look and feel of this small coffee shop. It may not be flashy or have fancy new tables or countertops but it exudes the laid-back vibes of Santa Cruz. The coffee is always good and they have fresh pastries from local bakeries. If you're able to snag a seat on the patio (and it's warm enough to sit for a bit), I highly recommend taking in the Capitola Beach and riverfront view. read more

I ordered the honey lavender latte and with the homemade whip cream (Best whip cream I've ever had!) you can have your choice of a nap inducing couch, tucked in a nook, or daze into the ocean with the famous painted homes in sight. It's a cozy place on the 2nd floor of a building in Capitola, you've got to make your way up a flight of stairs to get your coffee fix. Mr Toots is a Capitola institution. The oldest coffeeshop in Santa Cruz county in fact! If you're coming to Capitola, make sure you're coming to Toots, or you didn't really get the whole experience. It's a great stop from the esplanade to a wharf walk, everyone should have a warm (or iced bevi) for a wharf walk. My lifelong recommendations are chai, or the Mona Lisa, people who are NOT me seem to love the Borgia. I'm a never fruit & chocolate mixer. But really the baked good, especially those baked by Gary are not to be missed. My choice would be cheesecake for a treat, or coffeecake because you deserve it, but they're all good. Everyone who works here is a gem in one way or another. It's a great spot to work or to meet old friends (sometime new ones!) or to just enjoy some music & the view. I like most of the employees playlists. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the view, it's the most picturesque & charming cafe I can think of, the view of the Venitians is unparalleled. The Ocean and Soquel Creek will soothe your soul, water works wonders like that. Historic coffee shop located in Capitola. Who would've ever knew? My husbands union rep is the one who tipped him off about this secret gem. We parked a few blocks away and brought our personal cups to reduce waste. The girl working the counter was very patient with all my questions and do they offer dairy free milk? Yes they do. I also order my drinks decaf to avoid a ton of caffeine, I'm super boring I know. My husband and I, enjoyed our drinks never to the window looking down at the street. There is one bathroom. I can't for sure figure out if wheelchairs can make it in? There is a back entrance, but I didn't check it out. The front entrance is stairs only. read more
