Just had a wonderful weekend getaway at the Normandy Inn. I called the inn to arrange a late check in, and the woman who answered my call couldn't have been nicer. She explained where the keys would be, the parking situation and just was very friendly and accommodating. BF and I arrived at 645 pm on Friday evening, had no problems getting into our room. There are only a few parking spots for a few guest rooms, but we were able to park on premises. There is parking less than 1/8 mile away near the beach which we would have been more than fine with. There's no street parking in Spring Lake. We loved our room, it was clean (although a little chilly) and the bathroom was perfectly sized for two people. We went to Belmar for dinner (we walked as we had just sat in the car for a few hours) and then sat outside on the huge porch before heading up to bed. We got a later start in the morning Saturday (we wanted to go apple picking in Freehold, about 30 minutes away) but I stopped at the front desk to "check in" and the waitress from the restaurant wanted to know if we wanted to eat, even though she was almost done with her shift and breakfast ended at 10 (it was 950am). We thanked her profusely, but wanted to get on the road. She even offered to give us coffee and muffins to go, which was super sweet. We had a full day and came back for bed around 830pm and there was a night manager around, which we didn't see on Friday. We decided to sit on the porch again and drink the wine we didn't finish from dinner. BF ran upstairs to get a phone charger and the night manager came out to check on me, offering tea, blankets, and was just as friendly as could be. We had breakfast there on Sunday, I was really impressed with the selection of food. I've been to BnBs that only have one or two options or they put out whatever they want to serve and call it a day. You can choose from a bunch of different options. I had an omelette and BF had the pancakes. Both were delicious and the service was excellent. Was able to check out with no problems, very quick and easy. Overall, we had an excellent stay at the inn. It is old but it's quaint and charming. BF and I were the youngest people there, but we didn't mind. The other guests we interacted with briefly were friendly. I had read some negative reviews after I had booked our stay, so I was slightly apprehensive, but we had such a different experience there. I highly recommend this charming B and B. When here because breakers room's ran out and it was possible the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The room we got was the suite which was anything but. The bed's mattress felt like you were sleep on a mattress of wooden plank that were laying on the road. The room was dirty, I found crumbs and hairs and even some stains on the mattress. I wonder if the cleaning help has ever heard of a vacuum or a laundry machine. Then there was the bathroom. It was the size of a teacup, if you were to close yourself into the shower you wouldn't be able to walk in it you would only be able to turn in circles. The toilet was clogged when we got there and the staff didn't fix it so I had to do it myself. Finally for the room the towels smelled like bacon, I am pretty sure that they are the same towels that they use to clean the dishes from the breakfast. Speaking of the breakfast it was god awful. I got the scrambled eggs and they overcooked half of my plate while the other half was undercooked. How do you manage to do that?! Let's just say I am never coming back after this experience. Do not come here if you care for your health and want to have a pleasant vacation. read more

Not the romantic getaway we anticipated We stayed for a last minute overnight get away last weekend in the carriage room. Check in was lovely and the staff were gracious enough to let us pick up the keys and drop our bags early. We noticed an issue with the door when we entered. It wasn't locked and couldn't lock or open or close completely without difficulty. We assumed with the excess rain and the old home it was just to be expected and since it was a quiet neighborhood, we didn't worry about it. Upstairs in the unit, was quiet and decent, but the carpet was starting to buckle in the doorway between the living area and bedroom. In addition, the living room outlet appeared unsafe with a black substance near the plug. (There were other outlets that we were able to use.) In addition, the bathroom cabinet doors were crooked with chipped paint. We left for the afternoon and evening - and returned after the regular innkeeper left (Christine). I noticed when I went to take a bath that the grab bar was very loose and unsafe. I attempted to phone the number for their after hour innkeeper but got no response. I went downstairs to knock on the innkeepers door but got no response. The paper in the room indicated to contact in the event of an emergency. I didn't believe this was an emergency, more of an inconvenience. I gave up and went to bed- only to find holes in the worn sheets. In the morning (after a delicious breakfast) I made the assistant innkeepers aware of my concerns. They were kind and receptive and wrote down the concerns. They stated they were aware that the building suffered damage from the excessive rain during the past few months and were aware of the damaged door. They added that the carriage house room was subject to abuse by previous summer guests and were not surprised by the issues of the room. They added that for these reasons they were closing up the b & b for repairs soon. They assured me that they would share the information with Christine and she would be in touch. I called to check in Thursday but was told Christine wasn't in. I called back today, a week later, after not getting a reply from Christine. Unfortunately the call did not go well. Christine stated we should have made her aware of the concerns when we got the key. I told her we went out to enjoy the day (St Stephen's for lunch before the boardwalk, church, followed by a reservation for dinner) and spoke about unsuccessful attempts to first call and then knock on the night innkeepers door. She then said because we stayed there overnight that she could not assist after the fact. I told her based on the issues with the room I did believe it was worth the excessive $350 rate and she should remove a portion of the fee I suggested $100 (because the breakfast was lovely and the other staff were kind and have to collect a paycheck). When I told her I had photos of the concerns, she accused me of threatening her and put the phone down... (I'm assuming, it got quiet and she didn't respond further. ) My goal wasn't to be ugly or threatening and still isn't. I merely was hoping to have the fee lowered for a room that wasn't worth the price. That said, be aware before staying here. The carriage house is not a high end romantic evening away but a place for multiple people to stay by the shore (besides the bed in the main bedroom, the living room has 2 trundle beds). Also, be sure to immediately and thoroughly inspect the room AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE. Finally, don't expect flexibility when dealing with Christine. This is a cold hard "family" business who isn't concerned about how hard you had to save to enjoy a nice evening away with your spouse. There are several other B&Bs in the area. Perhaps, consider one of them before committing to this B&B. I've stayed at others and had a lovely, positive experience. A great suggestion is the Spring Lake Inn. read more

I had a business meeting here and the Inn keeper couldn't be nicer. She made sure we had everything. Rooms are cozy and very clean. This is set on a quiet street and only a 10 min walk to town. A 3 min walk to the water makes for a beautiful early morning g stroll. Parking on premises. The front porch is huge with many wicker chairs for sitting and enjoying the afternoon. Spring Lake is a quiet beautiful town with charm. read more

I am a fan. There are a few things I appreciate when staying by the ocean - in a non-hotel w/out dropping a ton of money. A. Cleanliness - check B. Comfy bed- check C. Hot Water and good water pressure- check, check. D. Good service- check! I do not need anyone running after me as I walk around the grounds ... However anytime I had a question it was answered in a polite, thorough and professional manner. That works for me. Inn provides a delicious, made to order breakfast and they offer tea with goodies in the afternoon. Tea around the clock (happy face) and parking was available you just have to time it right. E. Walking distance from the beach/eats and biking distance to center of town. So peaceful. I would come again. ps Catherine actually sold me on the phone. We loved it! The house and rooms are so unique! We stayed in room 203 and it was clean and to my surprise the bed was actually comfortable. I was a little worried the room would get too hot bc the weather was in the 90's but we were very comfortable. The attached bath was very clean as well and I loved the big round window! Christine was very friendly and welcoming and even offered to leave us out breakfast because we had to leave very early in the morning before they opened up for the day. The proximity to the beach and the beach passes are a huge plus, only negative was not enough parking on site and parking in Spring Lake as a non resident can be tricky. read more

If you're looking for a great value B&B with nice amenities, clean rooms, and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff, don't look any further. My S.O. and I had a lovely weekend at the Normandy. We went in the off season, so a standard queen room (including breakfast) was just $135 (with NJ taxes and no minimum stay). Doesn't get much better than that. The staff is wonderful, and Holly (the innkeeper) made us feel right at home, and gave us a nice list of local restaurants. She even checked in with us after dinner to make sure our choice worked out well. Her grand-kids were equally lovely (they helped her put out afternoon tea). Amenities. Surprisingly, there are quite a few. This isn't your traditional big-TV, stay in your room kind of place. There's a lovely common area, and I'd imagine in the summer its full of people, a great way to make new friends. The common area has couches, and a large TV, and even WiFi (we didn't try it out, we were trying to disconnect from the world at little). Tea and Coffee are available for free all the time, and there are even refrigerators for guests who might want to store their leftovers (and a microwave to heat them up). They also serve afternoon tea and cookies, which was the perfect way to warm up after wandering the beach a little. They also have a lovely made-to-order included breakfast in the morning. The location is nice, about a block from the ocean (and non-commercial boardwalk). It is a little bit of a walk into the downtown, probably about 15 minutes, but if you have a car (we didn't), or a bike, you'll be fine. Honestly, we spent more time on the boardwalk than in downtown Spring Lake anyway. Rooms were nice and well kept, very clean. Bathrooms had been pretty recently renovated. No water problems at all. It's a very neat old Victorian house with lots of character, but that does mean the rooms are a bit cold in the winter. They provide plenty of blankets for a comfortable night's sleep, but if you visit off season, you might want to bring a good sweatshirt (you'll need it on the beach anyway). There's also a gas stove in the common area, perfect for curling up with a book and a cup of tea. If you're looking for a low key, budget friendly, home away from home, with a lovely breakfast and fantastic staff, make sure you stay here. read more

We had a lot of problems here. We found hairs on room sheets and towels and cobwebs in the building itself ; our food order was messed up ; we had problems getting our 'complimentary' beach pass. Also, management seemed hostile. Best avoided. read more

We booked a block of rooms at the Normandy Inn for our wedding . The front desk was very responsive to all questions and requests. Many of the guests from the wedding spent the night at the Normandy Inn, and everybody really enjoyed their stay. The rooms at the Inn were very nice and comfortable and the large wrap around porch was perfect for relaxing and having nice conversations. I would stay at the Normandy Inn again for a nice relaxing vacation in Spring Lake. read more

Went there a couple weeks ago, been there years ago and had a good time. But when we entered our room this time we were so disappointed. The bed was so old and unconformable. The only way my wife could get up was to crawl over me. She had to sleep right up against the AC. We couldn't adjust the hot and cold water in the shower, the light and fan in the shower didn't work. Only a few of the electrical outlets worked in the room. When we told them of these issues they sent a man up to check out our complaints. When he left he said there was nothing wrong with the shower facet you just had to shake it a bit. I didn't pay that kind of money to shake it a bit. Next time I go to Spring Lake the Johnson House Inn right next door will be my choice. read more

I have been staying at the Normany Inn for over 20 years along with other family members. This beautiful inn still reflects the Victorian Period while providing wifi and those conveniences we can't seem to do without. A brief walk to the beautiful beach of Spring Lake as well as it's proximity to pubs,restaurants, and the center of town make this a perfect place to stay whether you are there for a quiet time or a starting point for regular "shore" activities. The innkeepers have always been friendly and helpful...even those who are evening or substitute innkeepers have always provided the friendly, warm hospitality visitors have come to expect. My wife and I just spent a night at the Normandy inn and were disappointed. They told us they provide parking, beach chairs, towels., etc. among other amenities. The beach chairs were all out so we had to go drive somewhere to purchase chairs which was time consuming and costly. We had to park approx 2-3 blocks away because there was no parking. The staff was ok but young and somewhat inexperienced. In fact I think one of the owners was at the desk when we left and didn't even ask how our stay was or much else. Seemed very disinterested. The room was cute and the breakfast was fine. Seems like if you're going on an off weekend and don't mind mediocre service you should be ok. read more

We had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Normandy Inn earlier this month. We arrived late in the evening and the late check in was well handled. We were having such a great time visiting nearby relatives and enjoying the Inn, we extended our stay by a day and that too was easily and graciously accommodated. Our room was beautifully furnished, clean, and comfortable. As to the included breakfast, it was great. There was a good selection to choose from and everything was delicious. I just returned from a wonderful stay at The Normandy Inn - midwinter no less! It is one of the few places in Spring Lake that offers a full, hot, delicious breakfast all year long, which caught my eye. In addition to breakfast they serve "tea treats" in the afternoon (which in my case included a combination of some of the following: cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, fresh fruit and a sweet of some sort, i.e. cookies or brownies or cake....). Their off-season rates are great so if you need a quick get-away from NYC, it's a super deal and only 2 hours from Manhattan by NJ Transit. Christine, the Innkeeper, could not have been more lovely or accommodating. For people who don't wish to leave the Inn she has a supply of menus from various local restaurants that deliver. I snuggled down in my room which had its own fireplace, a large tub, a mini fridge (which I could keep leftovers in) and I could look out at the ocean in the distance and at night listen to the waves lull me to sleep. Talk about a restful respite! The rooms are clean and comfortable and filled with lovely Victorian antiques (but with modern mattresses, bathrooms, etc.). Let me also add that I've stayed at two other places in Spring Lake over the years and they were fine - but after staying at The Normandy Inn I have found a new place to call "home" in Spring Lake. I will definitely return to The Normandy Inn again. I'm hooked. read more
