In mid-June, my husband and I took a little trip down to the seashore to just get away. We had recently lost our beloved pet, our Celtic Creme; a toy poOdle who shared her life with us for 18 1/2 wonderful years. Celtie loved life and brought so much to our lives. We needed to smell that ocean air, feel that warm ocean breeze across our faces... and reflect on our life together with Celtie... those 'special memories' of Celtie with us ~ at the seashore! Staying at the Shawmont Hotel, with that beautiful view of the ocean, was so peaceful. Joanna, the manager, efficiently had everything in place for us and her staff are wonderful people. Susan, who is such a beautiful person. Lisa, who has such compassion for people who have experienced a great loss with a loving pet, offered us a site to go on to for healing: Rainbow Bridge. It is a beautiful site and is indeed helping us. Katherine, Eileen, the night manager, and anyone who sits at that front desk is a joy to speak with. We also would like to commend their helpful and extremely friendly housekeeping staff. We'll be returning in August and look forward to another pleasant vacation. We got very lucky with getting a parking spot right in front! Saw many people driving around looking for parking.... The room was very clean and the cleaning lady was super nice! This place promotes itself as being family friendly, but our experience was far from that. We are a family of 6. Rented two rooms. We came for Bridgefest weekend and for 3 of us to be baptized in the ocean. That was wonderful and memorable! However, or experience at this hotel was not wonderful. We were nagged by the staff about noise level, even in the middle of the day. They couldn't just tell the other guests that they had spoken to us? No, they had to keep reminding me. The kids were well behaved and just excited to be there! There were no other young children that we saw staying there. As soon as we were baptized I came back to the room, and was reminded again about the noise level in the middle of the day when it was pouring outside. We packed up and checked out a day early knowing that we were going to be stuck inside playing board games the rest of the night. I've never paid so much for two hotel rooms for 2 days and 1 night. If you are looking for a place to stay with young children, look somewhere else. read more

I visited the Shawmont with my girlfriend for 4th of July. The location is amazing but the rest of the experience does not match the premium price they charge. The bed linens have stains. The hotel was renovated very cheap (even the door knob were not changed, the locks don't work). The rooms are extremely small and the breakfast (yogurt and bagels only) is ... minimalist (there is not even water available, just coffee and hot water). The toiletry follows the same trend with mini soap given. It's a shame because of the owners were offering a slightly more premium experience, it could be easily a 5 stars review. But today, the Shawmont is the experience of a 2 stars hotel at the price of a 4 stars. read more

My husband was born with Spina Bifida and has been in a wheelchair his entire life, but he has always been treated as equal as everyone else with our family, friends and by most civil people. We have vacationed the last 15 years in Ocean Grove with our family, we stay in a local accessible hotel or B&B. They have stayed at the Shawmont a number of times and we're treated well...so I don't know what has changed recently. This trip, they booked for a week and had the same room they have always had. My son recently had both his legs amputated and occasionally, as he transfers in and out of his chair he might nick his leg and suffer a small cut.... Like many of us do. Apparently when housekeeping came to the room, they found a spot of blood on the sheets and proceeded to bill their card an additional $80 for laundry fees and were adding an additional charge for the remainder of the stay. They left. So while the Shawmont is handicap accessible, they are not Handicap Friendly. In the god fearing town of Ocean Grove the Christian Spirit does not reside at the Shawmont. Never going back, its old and out of date and they are complaining about spots of blood, what if I had my monthly would I be discriminated for being a female who unintentionally leaked on the sheets. Unreal and really sad. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

For decades, we stayed at Shawmont Hotel at least 2 times a year. We just returned from the Shawmont today after sentimentally trying to celebrate our 37th Anniversary in what was our favorite B & B. The entire change of atmosphere, quality of breakfast buffet, cleanliness, inexpensive interior deco, and furniture. Room mattresses worn out & uncomfortable (Rm # 1), whicker back boards & night table, with burrow missing nobs. Bathroom with tile floor so worn out that they appear filthy, no toilet rolls holder, a large black centipede in tub, and rusted base board heater & wrought iron table. Door from hallway to bedroom, required shoulder bump to open, door-nob hinge hanging and required Philips-head screw driver to secure. The nightly cost of room almost $ 290 disappointing, and most importantly the basic destruction of a former dream B & B, is a shame. read more

Came here for pride weekend and its a LOVELY spot. Right on the beach, easy parking and extremely friendly staff. It could be a little cleaner and maybe some room amenities updated. Our TV didn't work. However, it was a lovely stay and I'd try them again if I come through Asbury Park in the future. read more

The rooms are in disrepair - I stay here often and am sad to say that there is water damage, the mattresses and furniture are very worn, and the steps to the 2nd floor are treacherous. If I had money I'd buy it and work it as my retirement. However, the location is priceless and the staff are sweet and friendly. read more

The owner manager of this place is 0 on customer service,,, I booked a room for Friday to Saturday I emailed her (with the heading FRIDAY to SATURDAY) & she responded by email what date) I then called her on phone & she responded that the had one room left & I gave her my credit card,,, on Thursday at 9pm I get a call from hotel asking if I checked in,,,I then find out she reserved the room for Thursday,,, I didn't read the confirmation as I assumed it was for the day we discussed & every Every email that I sent,, Ava refused any responsibility, no refund,, then I went in person & asked to stay another day,,, no she literally stole my $ 240...another person would have wanted to keep a customer,,, terrible, terrible person... We stayed for two nights on the second floor(102). Both nights we were up until 3 pm. The person(s) above us made so much noise it was unnerving. No relief in the morning-person(s) was up at 6 am!!!!!! No staff on duty to speak to at night. Would not recommend staying overnight unless you are on the 3rd floor (top floor)! read more

Trust me, this is not a 4 star place. For the exorbitant pricing, the hotel was in disrepair. The older woman who works at the front desk was overbearing even when she was trying to be nice, and at times extremely rude. I must have spent close to $1,200 and they refused to allow a late check out (never been to a hotel that said no), and not only that, the woman actually came to my mom's door and my door as I was trying to gather my stuff to leave in time, and was belligerent and argumentative. So classy. I had booked this place for a weekend getaway for my mom, and it was so awful I was embarrassed. Will not be returning. read more

The room we stayed smaller than we had thought for the price. When we opened a window, the screen dropped out. The kitchen only had no cook top, but a fridge, toaster and microwave. Bed and bedding and bathroom was clean and ok. We enjoyed the quaint town and easy access to the beach. read more

You get what you pay for. The Shawmont was not the Four Seasons, but it was just as expected for a little over 100 per night. Simple, clean rooms. Nothing fancy. The nice thing about the Shawmont is its location. Its literally right across the street from the beach and the boardwalk. And you can walk up to Asbury Park if you want to. read more

My favorite place to stay, hands down. So clean, practically right on the ocean, friendly staff. Get there early to get good parking. They offer a light breakfast during high season - I felt as though breakfast could have included more options, but no biggie. I'm a pretty light eater anyway, but for those expecting eggs for the breakfast they offer might want to lower their expectations for that. Coffee and tea all day long. I absolutely love it at Shawmont. So cute, so Victorian but renovated enough to be comfortable. Can't wait to go back again next year and the year after that and the year after that....! Stayed here for four nights celebrating my parents-in-law 60th Anniversary. We were a squad of 10 (!!) with some strong personalities, and this place was perfect. We all had clean, comfy rooms, super quiet at night and a primo location. LITERALLY right across the street from the boardwalk/beach. The building is from 1871, so the floors squeak, the hallways and staircases are narrow, Hey, its part of the character!! They offer discounted beach passes and towels, and a nice continental breakfast of yogurt, granola, berries in season, baked banana/ginger breads, bananas, apples, juice. Coffee and Tea all day. Bottled water is in the common fridge. The management was great. Very communicative and friendly. Free parking out front, but be aware, Ocean Grove gets packed on weekends. Also, its a dry community, so no place closeby to grab a beer. You'll have to BYO or walk a short (20 minutes) north on the boards To Asbury Park for drinks. The front porch is a wonderful place to meet your fellow travelers, people-watch, and trade recommendations for dinner/lunch, etc. 100% recommended, would stay again. read more

This is my favorite place to stay when visiting Ocean Grove, NJ. My husband and I enjoy staying here a few days every summer. The folks running this place are friendly and welcoming. We always book the ocean front room with the balcony which is great to sit out there a take in the ocean breeze in the evening as you watch the sun set. If you are looking for a clean,relaxing place to stay at the Jersey Shore to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life then look no more. A wonderful beach hotel in Ocean Grove. The staff is very friendly and the water view rooms (with porch) are perfect to hang out on. They offer discounted beach passes and provide beach towels. The hotel also provides a basic "continental" breakfast at no cost. The room was updated and comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel. read more

The Shawmont is located right across the beach in Ocean Grove. I like Ocean Grove because it is fun yet quiet at night. The staff are attentive, friendly and are always available to help and answer any questions. I really needed a little vacation after all the stress of the pandemic. Be assured that the Shawmont is clean and following all the CDC guidelines for cleaning and sanitizing. There are hand sanitizing stations in the lobby and everyone is required to wear a mask in common areas. That gave me piece of mind. The one down side is that, because of COVID, they are not serving breakfast, but there is still coffee and tea available on the front porch. My friend and I had one of the side rooms on the second floor. Our room was clean and comfortable. The terrace was nice and you can see some of the beach and ocean. It is also pleasant to sit out there in the cool evening or morning watching the birds. We felt like we got a workout going up the stairs to our room, but we chose to put a positive spin on it, (getting our steps in). That is the charm of staying at one of these old homes. It is not a modern hotel with an elevator. It is a beautiful home with character. Walking down Main Street in Ocean Grove is a bit like a vintage movie set. We loved looking at all the visual details on the houses and inns. Outdoor dining is available in Ocean Grove as well as Asbury Park--everything from casual takeout to fancier fare. You really can't beat being right across the street from the lovely beach! I wish I was there now. I hope to stay at the Shawmont again soon. read more

I had been recommended to this hotel by a local friend and I can say I am unimpressed with the service. I did not stay here so I cannot speak for what it is like to stay but I can say I'm disappointed with how making a reservation was handled. I live in NJ and had friends coming into town to visit and wanted to stay here. We are 4 27 year old girls who travel together a lot and stay in rooms with pull out couches. I emailed asking if we could do this in one of the rooms with the above and for the prices. I got a response quickly with prices and recommendation for which room would be better for the 4 of us. I asked another question and the next day got a response from a different person and was ultimately told that the 4 of us could not stay in a room together. Who ever is responsible for booking rooms should be on the same page about guest policies. They also spoke down to me once I revealed our age and I felt unfairly discriminated against due to that. I'm very disappointed at what happened and how I was responded to once the lady realized we were 4 young girls trying to stay in one room that had a queen and pullout couch at the hotel. I will not recommend this hotel to any visitors in the future and neither will the person who recommended me here. read more

This is an outstanding hotel -B&B. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the decor is bright and cheerful and the entire place is clean and well organized.
