4.5 stars The Tandem Bike Inn is apparently now known as "The Opal & Pearl", though the owners remained the same. The family-run property was extremely well-kept, and there were so many small details that they had thought of that really enhanced the experience. I was, however, surprised to see so many reviews refer to the place as a "bed and breakfast", because despite the atmosphere being similar, a morning meal was not truly included (more on that below). I am not sure if that was an adjustment made when they also changed the name of the hotel or what. Anyway, I broke out my thoughts on various aspects below: Room: Our room was on the third floor, so there were a good amount of steps to get up there. There was a storage cabinet in the hallway on each floor that held spare rolls of toilet paper and extra cosmetic items for guests to grab as needed. The rooms, however, were already well-stocked with these items, but it was nice to have access to backups for longer stays. Our room was reasonable spacious and even included a fireplace, two stools, a loveseat, and a coffee table. There was also a luggage rack, a dehumidifier, a Roku smart television, beach towels, and beach passes included. The room was relatively soundproof from the neighboring ones, and the area was quiet to begin with. The bed was very soft and fluffy, but wound up being more supportive than I would have expected, since I did not wake up with any back pain. The private bathroom was reasonably spacious and included a large stall shower. There were two of each size towel you could possibly want. Though its pedestal sink did not provide any counterspace, there was a small stand in the corner that could be used as an alternative. The bath products were from C.O. Bigelow, so they had no parabens or other gross ingredients. Cleanliness: Overall, the room was very clean, though I did see a few hairs on the bathroom walls and a long one on the inside of a folded bath towel. The common areas were spotless. Breakfast: While breakfast was not included in the reservation, it could be purchased in advance through the website with a few main course options to choose from. Alternatively, the hotel left a daily "Morning Experience Card" voucher in the room that would cover a portion of breakfast at one of three local eateries - a diner, a bagel shop, or a cafe (see my review for Caffe Di Famiglia at https://www.yelp.com/biz/caffe-di-famiglia-belmar?hrid=muhG5OL20A6uHsCNcq1fHg ). The summertime voucher was for $20, though it would apparently be valued at a lower amount in the off-season. The lobby did have coffee and a delicious orange sponge cake in the morning, though. Registration: The check-in/out services were easy, requiring an online pre-registration, where you selected code that would allow you into the building and to your room. The code would stop working when your reservation ended. There were also two chocolate chip cookies waiting to greet us in our room. Common Areas: The quaint home had a wrap-around porch that included a few dining tables and several rocking chairs. On the inside ground floor there was a dining room table, a living room, and a small den with coffee maker and water pitcher. Beach Gear: In addition to the passes and towels in the room, the hotel had beach cruiser bikes, beach chairs, umbrellas, and carts available for use. Location: The location was spectacular, as it was only a block from Main Street's restaurants, shops, and fitness centers, as well as only a few blocks to the beach. Parking: There was room for 5-6 cars to park behind the inn, as well as free parking spots on the residential block. While we would have loved to have a homecooked breakfast at The Opal & Pearl included in our stay, we really felt that the inn was cute and welcoming. We would definitely stay there again. read more

May be the best bed and breakfast I've stayed in. The area is perfect. Located on a charming block away from noise, but also an easy walk or an even easier bike ride to the beach or Main Street. Parking is free on the street (or you can also park in the back of the house - has maybe 2 ish spots). We had no issue with street parking. We took our bikes and beach chairs to the beach one day (we had our own chairs, but they provide chairs if you want and also beach towels). Room was clean and self check in was with our own code. The mattress could use an upgrade, but it wasn't terrible. Bathtub was jacuzzi style. All very clean and painting seemed up to date. Air conditioner got cold very quickly. Dedra and Cord were excellent and really paid attention to detail. I appreciate the cookies that were in our room on check in and then the treats that were on our door the next day! What a wonderful last minute find. Highly recommend this boutique inn. Location is very good, close to Main Street for food and the beach/boardwalk down the street. Parking was allowed on the street during our stay. Room 3 is very comfortable. Light, bright, clean and well appointed. Front porch with rocking chairs allows you to unwind. Main floor space offers water, tea/coffee. Great selection of coffee and teas. Comfortable seating for remote work, reading and board games. I cannot recommend this place enough! Mike and Anne Marie were so pleasant. My brother in law got married at the breakers in spring lake so TBI is about 7 minutes from the breakers. Check in process was so easy and Mike showed us around, how things worked in our room. I felt very safe since the front door had a passcode you had to punch in to enter and locked behind you. Breakfast was great everyday! Annemarie made the breakfast everyday! The tandem bike inn is in walking distance to a lot of good restaurants. We stayed in the bike path room. read more

Dedra & Cord were exceptionally gracious and friendly throughout our stay that was suppose to be 2 nights, but extended to 3 nights because of inclement winter weather at our home base. The room was beautiful. Nicely decorated and the warms grays provided a cozy feeling. The bed was comfortable, and the room had a very nice fireplace that added an extra warmth and cozy feeling to the room. The breakfasts were OUTSTANDING. Love, love, love it here! The innkeepers are so welcoming without even trying. They genuinely want you to enjoy, relax and supply you with a great getaway. The rooms are clean, cozy and have everything you need. I stayed in the 'Beach Breeze' room, which was a little smaller compared to the others. What I did like was that the room had lots of sunlight and since I wasn't in the room much I didn't need a lot of space. I believe each room has an HD tv, fridge, luggage rack, WIFI, bathroom amenities (no hair conditioner) and AC. Plenty of books are arranged in the living room and local suggestive flyers are available. Outside is a shower (from the beach), limited parking outback and beach chairs/umbrellas/bikes. Breakfast (varies) was delicious and cooked on site. I def would love to revisit! read more

I'm almost nervous to write this review because I'm worried everyone else will try to stay here and there won't be availability for us again! But I have to do my due diligence and be honest--I can't keep this place a secret. It is too unbelievable. Not only is the Tandem Bike Inn the cleanest place we have ever stayed in, but it is the labor of love put into the details that made it even more memorable. The morning breakfast was beautifully served, ensuring we are all safe. The availability of tea and coffee was great, but the baked goods that Anne Marie bakes fresh is icing on the cake! I've never tasted such incredible baked goods (and I think I'm pretty darn good at baking!). Her scones, biscuits, muffins, and cookies are to die for. The fresh fruit was perfect as well. The bed was very comfy, and the bathroom clean and fresh. We enjoyed staying on the top floor (but be prepared - two flights of stairs!). The folks staying at the Inn were kind, quiet, and respectful. You never know what you're going to get (not just the room, but also the clientele who stay)...and I must say I was very happy. The place is really immaculately clean, has small finishing touches that will make you feel at home, and we couldn't have met nicer people than Mike and Anne Marie. We look forward to staying here again and making this our new place to stay when we visit. I'm from the area- and these places at this caliber are hard to come by. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here over the July 4th weekend, which happened to be their opening weekend, and had the most amazing experience. The proprietors were absolutely the most hospitable, friendly and attentive hosts you could wish for. Breakfast was absolutely amazing and homemade to order...fresh made Belgian waffles with fresh strawberries with a fresh fruit salad appetizer (with julienne fresh mint grown on the property) and freshly baked banana walnut muffins, WOW!!!!!! The BF and I unfortunately missed most of the breakfasts since we're late risers and service ends around 10 am, a mistake we will not be making again. The rooms are all nicely appointed and CLEAN with very comfortable beds. Each room had it's own bathroom, air conditioning and HD cable TV. Beach passes are included in the price of the rooms as well. The location is very central to everything. The train was about a block and a half away, three restaurants, including a vegan/vegetarian one, right up the block from the inn and the beach is a very easy walk from the inn. Tandem Bike Inn is one of those establishments that knows that in the hospitality industry, HOSPITALITY is most important. Something that most of the industry has forgotten. We're already planning another trip this summer to Belmar and will most definitely staying at Tandem Bike Inn. read more

This was our very first experience at a Bed & Breakfast and we had a wonderful time! Atmosphere: Everything from the food, to the coziness of the house was perfect. This is a great place to stay for a romantic trip. The house is very clean and quiet (which I love). The hosts were very sweet and I felt they tried very hard to make it a pleasant experience. Walking distance: The Tandem Bike Inn is close to everything - restaurants, shops, the beach is all within walking distance. We stayed for a couple of days and we didn't have to move our car once. Food: We were given suggestions of places to go for dinner in the area. There are so many places nearby, it's easy to find a place to eat. For dinner, we ate at Bareli's by the Sea in Spring Lake (the next town over) and La Dolce Vita in Belmar (both were great). The Tandem Bike Inn provides their guests with daily breakfast before 9:45 a.m. and a daily afternoon snack including coffee, tea, water, and usually a cold drink like lemonade. During our stay, my husband's favorite breakfast - the French toast with Canadian bacon; my favorite breakfast was the egg, potato, and bacon sandwich. Oh and he really loved the lemon twist pastries! Delicious! Some other things: The Tandem Bike Inn also provides beach towels and passes, bikes, chairs, an outdoor shower, DVDs, Fios cable, books, a comfortable bed to sleep in, and a breezy porch to relax on. We had a lovely one night stay at this adorable b&b in Belmar. The room was clean and comfy with a private bath. The hosts were extremely nice. It felt as though we were visiting family. We really enjoyed the corn muffins and cookies in the afternoon. Breakfast the next day included fresh fruit, yogurt and granola - self serve. We then sat outside on the quiet and comfortable porch and were served the breakfast of the day which was French toast and chicken sausage. Neither my husband or I cared for the sausage but the French toast was divine. We just wished something savory with eggs perhaps would have been offered as we were on a sweets overload! A very nice, very clean, well-maintained bed and breakfast, a cut above others we've stayed at. The hosts, Mike and Ann Marie, are friendly and accessible. Great breakfast! First, breakfast appetizers (wha-a-at??), then the main course, expertly cooked and presented by Ann Marie. The through-the-wall room air conditioner/heater in our room (Spinners) was very quiet, nothing like the loud machines you get at other hotels, and easily controlled with a remote. The TV and remote worked great and had access to lots of premium movie channels. Spotless bathroom, nice towels. Easy walking distance to restaurants, bars, downtown and train station. A longer walk to the ocean, but do-able. Secure entry/exit via a personal lock code you're given. Beach towels, chairs, umbrellas are provided. And tandem bikes if you like. read more

Second time we've stayed here, and it's a great place to get away. Location is great: easy walking in the Belmar, Spring Lake, Avon area. My husband and I visited the Tandem Bike Inn this weekend and had such an amazing experience. From the moment we arrived, the owners Mike and Anne Marie make us feel so welcome and so at home. The entire inn is so relaxing and impeccably clean and there are so many wonderful amenities (tea and cookies in the afternoons, bicycles, coffee, beverages and snacks all day, beach passes, etc). Anne Marie made the most delicious breakfast (an eggs benedict casserole) that we were able to enjoy on the porch and Mike took the time to give us a crash course in riding a tandem bike, keeping true to their namesake! We had only visited Belmar once before, so the owner's daughter was kind enough to take the time to give us several wonderful restaurant suggestions for lunch, dinner and drinks! We enjoyed staying at the Tandem Bike Inn very much. Mike and Anne Marie were very nice and attentive. Breakfast was delicious and very pretty. Our room was comfortable. It was great having coffee and tea available all the time and having "afternoon tea." Unfortunately for us, we picked a weekend with bad weather...but we were able to take a bike ride one day. They have a lot of bikes to use. We only needed one for me since my husband brought his electic scooter. Mike helped me pick it out and got me all set up with the right seat height and helmet. Even though the bike looked a little worn it worked really well and was very comfortable to ride. I am out of shape but it's easy to ride around here since land is basically flat and there isn't much traffic. (Although...we went during off season, so I have no idea what traffic is like during summer.) Anyway...I recommend this Inn very highly. The only thing I would note is that there is no ocean view. But it is very close...a nice little bike ride away or very short drive. read more

Breakfast: Seriously delicious, perfect way to start the day...homemade scones, omelets, french toast, juices...Mmmm, mmmm good. 2. Location: Situated in beachy Belmar, it's a 5 min walk from the train station, 5 min walk to Main St (bars & restaurants) and 10 mins walk to the beach. My boyfriend and I stayed here for our anniversary and we couldn't find anything bad to say about this place! 5 stars for cleanliness, food, and service. We were in room 7 and the bed was super comfy. We were met with brownies and basil lemonade before we even settled in. Delicious! They even altered the menu for breakfast to accommodate my food allergies. They served us eggs, French toast, watermelon and blueberries, and fresh banana bread. There is always coffee and tea available and light snacks in the lobby area. The inn comes equipped with free beach tags, towels, and bikes. Less than a mile walk to the ocean and less than one block to downtown Belmar. Overall, the personable staff really made us feel welcome and at home and like they really cared about making our stay a great one. We would definitely stay here again! read more

This is a lovely B&B. The rooms are large and well thought out to provide comfort for the guests. We had a very comfortable king size bed, a sitting area, TV, DVD, fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. We stayed 4 nights, eating a delicious breakfast every morning, walking to the beach with beach chairs and towels provided by our hosts, biking to the boardwalk and around town, on bikes provided by our hosts, and eating at fine restaurants recommended by our hosts. Coffee, tea and sometimes lemonade are available throughout the day and in the afternoon Anne Marie puts out wonderful fresh baked treats. Mike and Anne Marie could not have been more accommodating. Mike and Anne Marie thought of every detail to make you feel comfortable. These are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. The inn is spotless, the room comfortable, and the food delicious. We used the bikes for a ride around Spring Lake and the beach area. There is plenty of parking on street and a few spots on the back. Spent a weekend with my college roommates at the inn. Ann Marie and Mike were extremely attentive, making us feel at home and welcomed. Every morning, we sat on the patio and they made us breakfast (which was extremely delicious). They also left tea, water and snacks downstairs that are available for everyone. In the afternoon, there would also be cookies or muffins around as well. The room was also spectacular (we were in room 2). It was clean, comfortable and everything we needed. There was a fireplace in the room as well. It wasn't needed, as it was the summer, but it would have been nice if staying during the colder season. In addition to the room and food, the Inn offered beach passes so we didn't have to pay per day (which saved us a lot of money!). There was also beach towels, umbrellas, bikes, etc that was open for our use. Everything was at our finger tips. There we also books and movies around that were also available for us as well. The location itself is also a huge plus. Literally in the heart of Belmar, everything was within a ten minute walk away. For those without a car, it's also two blocks away from the train station which allows an easy commute. For anyone interested in taking a trip to Belmar, I would HIGHLY recommend staying here! Where do I even begin? First, every review about the Tandem Bike Inn that we read prior to our stay was 100% true and accurate. This place is the cutest, cleanest, most accommodating, welcoming place you'll stay in the area. The entire Inn is modern and tastefully decorated by the lovely Anne Marie. It was a true home away from home. The inside dining area had a plethora of snacks and various food and beverage selections. Anne Marie's baking deserves some kind of trophy because her baked goods are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Not to mention her cooking - I've attached two photos of the breakfast made by Anne Marie. Totally worth waking up for. Mike & Anne Marie are the loveliest most genuine, kindest people you'll encounter. You don't come across that caliber of couple anymore these days. My boyfriend and I stayed here in mid-June after deciding to do a quick but public transportation accessible/easily walkable getaway from Manhattan. The Tandem Bike Inn is incredibly close to the train drop-off, and a short 10-minute walk to the beach on a quiet, peaceful street. The house itself is charming, as are its owners, Mike and Ann Marie. Mike is very knowledgeable about the area and offered us suggestions and tips which was nice. Ann Marie is quite the chef, with afternoon snacks (peach cobbler and lemon crisps) to a sweet & savory breakfast on the porch (french toast on crossiant bread with organic pineapple sausage). Mike and Ann Marie allow you to take beach chairs, beach towels and umbrellas to the beach, which are an added bonus you don't get at a hotel. Even better, they provide you with beach passes, which you'll need to get on the beach. If you want a subdued getaway that has clean accomodations, friendly staff, and the added bonus of really delicious home-cooked meals and treats, look no further! read more

For my husband and my 4th wedding anniversary we decided to go on a little getaway. This is when the great search for a place to stay started. I looked at every B&B and small hotel in the general area and none of them seamed right. The hotels were not special enough and the B&B's all looked like someone's grandmas house. Then I found The Tandem Bike Inn. It was everything I wanted in a anniversary getaway. When we arrived (three hours before check in) we had planed to just stop by to see if we could leave the car in the parking lot while we walked around town. Instead Anne Marie (the one half of the husband and wife in keeping team) welcomed us with open arms and got our room all ready for us. She told us all about the local shops. Mike (the other half of the inn keeper team) showed us to our room and explained everything from the tv to breakfast. Mike also welcomed us with a smiling face and open arms. We decided to drive the five minuet drive to the beach and walk along the boardwalk. When we returned my husband and I got comfy in their "living room area" with books and hot tea (that they always have available) and some fantastic freshly baked Rocky Road Cookies. The cookies were so good I would have eaten the whole plate but I held back. When we were looking for a good dinner spot we asked Mike and he told us about great seafood place called Mr. Shrimp and he recommended we pick up a bottle of wine because they are BYOB. After our amazing dinner we choose to relax in our room and watch a movie on one of the many movie channels they offer. I had the best nights sleep I think I have ever had in not my own bed. The bed was soft but not too soft and the Inn was quiet. In the morning we dressed and went downstairs to read and drink a nice cup of tea we were greeted by Mike and he invited us to try some freshly baked Cinnamon Banana Bread while we wait for breakfast to be served. The banana bread was amazing. We had to have two pieces each we couldn't help our selves. Then breakfast happened. A delightful spiced baked apple was the appetizer (who knew people had breakfast appetizers) followed up by a beautiful plate of three large slices of golden fluffy French Toast with strawberries, blackberries, and cinnamon butter as well as two thick crispy pieces of bacon. It was a sinfully amazing breakfast and so filling. I will miss this breakfast regularly. Shortly after breakfast my husband and I sadly packed up our belongings and went downstairs to tell our lovely in keeps that it was time for us to head home. We found them serving breakfast to some of the other guests and when we told them we were heading out they both made time to say goodbye to us. They encourage us to return during the warmer season and then they presented us with a tandem bike or naming as a gift for our anniversary. If you are looking for a wonderful place to stay, with amazing food, and kind people Tandem Bike Inn is that place. read more

We've been here three times and each time was a unique experience. The most amazing thing to us is that whenever we come to Anne Marie and Mike's home at the Tandem Bike Inn, we feel at home and in complete solace. Both make us feel very welcomed with a warm smile, a friendly conversation, and awesome amenities (plethora of types of rooms to choose from, movies, books, beach tags, beach towels, beach chairs, beach umbrellas, single bikes, tandem bikes, snacks and breakfast). Anne Marie's snacks and breakfast are amazing - we always look forward to it! Most of all, we are amazed at both Anne Marie and Mike with their patience, joy, and love for what they do everyday (which is not easy). Long overdue review but my wife and I stayed here for a weekend back in February and everything was absolutely perfect! Our stay exceeded our expectations. Our room was wonderful; king sized bed, hot tub/jacuzzi and cozy fireplace. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast every morning and the fresh baked goods in the afternoon. The french toast with the cinnamon butter was our favorite along with the blueberry muffins and turtle brownies! The owners are a lovely couple who were very accommodating and friendly. Highly recommend staying here. We can't wait to come back! read more
