Norma's located on the corner of Catalpa Ave and Forest Avenue; it's a cozy place where it feels as if you are in grandma's house. I've been working in the Ridgewood area for the past 7 years and even though I've heard my coworkers say that Norma's has the best coffee in town, I never made the trip to it because of the walk from work. Little Coffee Shop closed down for business and I was in the mood for some extra fuel and Rudy's was too much of a walk for me. As soon as I got there around 9am there was a line out the door, I automatically thought this is a good sign that everything is good in there. I only wanted coffee but it smelled too good to not get something for breakfast, I got the New Yorker Egg Sandwich with scrambled egg and cheese with spicy bacon on a biscuit. I waited 15 minutes for this sandwich and it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had and I was disappointed that for the past 7 years working in this area that I never gave it the chance to try it out. Too bad the wait was too long, as I waited I was noticing my surroundings and came across their "good food takes time" sign which is technically true but when I am only given 15 minute break this is not enough time to get back to work on time. Even though it took me 30 minutes to get back to work just to get a cup of coffee and a sandwich, the overall experience was above average and everything tasted good. I applaud Norma's for offering vegan items such as mini muffins. The one I had today was very good. However, it seems they have maybe taken a culinary step backwards, as I see no mention of vegan items on their menu, neither here on Yelp nor on their website. If vegan items are in fact still available, please do a better job of letting people know. I know they used to have tasty vegan cream cheese; no mention of that option online though. Norma's is not currently a "coffee destination." While not bad, I find the coffee to be nothing more than sufficient. But the aforementioned cream cheese, and bagels, have in my limited experience been fresh and tasty. Service: Well, this was awkward. I ordered a vegan pastry and a coffee. Without asking, the employee started to put the pastry in a paper bag. I let her know that I didn't need a bag. Then it got pretty weird. I was still in the process of paying, but she started holding the pastry, which was falling apart, in a sort of semi-squished ball, wrapped in the little paper that she had used to pick it up, sort of "up in my grill piece," if you'll pardon the 90's vernacular. She was holding it out as if I should I guess take it quickly before it crumbled to bits? Well I know this is gonna blow your minds, but there's a solution for just this sort of situation, folks. Maybe you've heard of it; it's called a PLATE. Yep, a good ole fashioned plate, of any type, would have been pretty professional at that moment. Hell even a napkin would've helped. The aggressive reluctance to provide a vessel for the item I had just paid for gave me the very unpleasant message of: Leave Now. We do not want you to stay here. As there's a pretty serious lack of breakfast options in the neighborhood, Norma's is still somewhat viable I think, particularly if one is entirely devoid of dietary or ethical concerns. Though Norma's is maybe best enjoyed via takeout. The inside is cramped and crowded. I've noticed that they keep moving things around, but can't seem to achieve anything resembling favorable Fung Shui. Also the line gets long and slow. Proceed with caution. read more

Norma's is a very cute little coffee shop in the most unlikely of areas. They have a small sandwich menu, and a few prepared sandwich options. But the star of the show are the baked goodies. Their macaroons are to die for! The coffee was excellent as was my chai tea latte. The only drawback is the limited seating. There's barely standing room when the place gets more than 10 customers. They also sell art and jewelry from local artists and designers. The service is friendly (at least the people that were there when I went in). There's a bit of a wait when you order food but it's well worth it! Here's what we ordered: Large iced coffee $3 - REALLY good coffee, way stronger than I expected, not too acidic and not sour Hot coffee w. shot of espresso $4 - My coworker said he was impressed New Yorker with SPICY BACON on a ciabatta roll $5 - Oily and a bit messy to eat but delicious! Best way to describe this place is it's like chilling at your grandma's house. Feels way more like a living room than a coffee shop. You can sit at wood tables and chairs, a booth OR there's even a sofa and rocking chair if you really feel like kicking back (still has plenty of outlets for your electronics though). I always just get the basic coffee when I go to these shops. There's was very good and a large was just $2 flat. Had a nice array of baked goods as well as a soup that changes day to day (just whatever they feel like cooking). Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Norma's is probably the first "American-style" coffeehouse in Ridgewood since Esparks closed a few years back. An alternative to the many old-school European cafes, the sleekness of Spolem, or the espresso counter at Rudy's. The staff are pleasant, and the iced coffee and hot drip are both quite good. I haven't tried the espresso yet, or the homemade baked goods, but they only opened a few days ago. It is a cute, small space, but there are few tables both inside and out front. It is a visible location, and en route to the train for many, so I'm sure they'll do well. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop! It's small & cozy shop (even after recent renovations) If you stop by during the morning rush be prepared to wait on a long line, which moves pretty fast (unless you are late for work like I am most of the time) lol. The indoor seating is limited and is usually taken up but they have a couple outdoor tables which is where I usually sit when the weather is nice and I have the time. This little shop has a variety of sweet treats from cakes, cookies to muffins and brownies. I've tried most of them and I must say they're all very unique and tasty, but be warned they can be very addictive! I found myself stopping here everyday before work to pick up treats for myself and my coworkers. As for the food menu I've only tried the breakfast sandwiches, which are all pretty good. I especially enjoy the sandwiches that are made on the biscuits! When I'm not in the mood for a heavy breakfast sandwich I order a plain biscuit with a drizzle of honey butter, so good! Now let's get to the main reason I love this place; the coffee. I've never had a bad cup of coffee from this shop. From the house drip to the lattes, whether hot, cold or flavored they are all so good. The coffee and lattes are very reasonably priced with a medium coffee at $2 and specialty drinks around 3-4 bucks. This coffee shop is so cute. The staff is really friendly and super helpful. There is four tables inside and there is also outdoor seating. Inside is so cute! Decorated with local art. They have the standard coffee, teas, muffins, bagels, etc. They also have signature sandwiches to order from as well. I had the ultimate Ranchero on a potato roll which was egg, blackbean, bacon, cheddar and salsa. The blackbean makes this sandwich. So good. It also had a little spice to it. Great corner shop with a very cozy and eclectic vibe. I've been here twice for their amazing iced coffee and is some of the best I've ever had. To round it up to around an even $5 grab a sweet treat. People rave on the bundt cakes which look amazing but they have always sold out of them by the time I get there (next time I'm going earlier) but I've had both a sweet blueberry and lemon cake as well as a moist and decadent chocolate cupcake...both complimenting the tasty iced coffee. I've lived in the neighborhood since before Norma's opened. I don't know what happened but they decided to renovate after the pandemic and totally got rid of any indoor seating that made the place a vibrant, community cafe before. It's a terrible new design, not welcoming and has done nothing to improve service time which has been increasingly abysmal the past few years. Shouldn't take 20 minutes plus to make two iced drinks that just requires mixing some pre-made liquids. read more

This place is lovely. Everyone here is kind and hardworking and very much the opposite of the snooty barista profile that is so common in Williamsburg and Bushwick. It seems to be female owned and operated. It can be crammed on the weekends. Food is very good for breakfast and lunch. The tuna melt is a favorite. I ordered a oat milk latte and a almond croissant. The oat milk latte was so hot I burned my tongue on it trying to carefully taste it... as a former barista, there is a maximum temp that milk should be heated to, to avoid this from happening. The almond croissant was stale. For a almond croissant that was $4.75, I would expect at least a fresh one. i had a new yorka on a chedda scallion biscuit. the biscuit was soft pliable cheesy. the chedda was gooey and oozy. byfar, this was the best breakfest sandwech i've had in a while. don't stop here folks. i also had a personal pumpkin cake which was also great. kudos to norma for making such an excellent meal. read more

The food is really good - if they get your order right. The eggs are similar to the McDonald's egg patties, which I'm not a fan of so I order whites. Apparently they don't separate the whites well, so you still get yolk in them. Also, they gave me the wrong eggs and when they fixed my order it arrived messier than before and clearly they just swapped out the eggs. The problem is, the black bean spread that's supposed to be on the sandwich is now completely gone (it was probably on the first egg). The spicy bacon is also really good - if they put in on there. They put the wrong bacon on my sandwich as well and it just tastes plain in that regards. The iced coffee is just okay - nothing amazing. The hot coffee is actually really good though. read more
