As a native of Ridgewood for 23 years, it is so annoying having to pay Manhattan prices for some coffee and sandwiches. Places like Norma's contributes to the gentrification of Ridgewood and it sucks for those who have lived here all of our lives. Yes, the sandwiches are good but I have bought stale hard pastries more than once and their iced coffee tastes water downed. After ages of walking by this cute, little corner shop, my daughter and I finally stopped by. The two women behind the counter were warm and friendly. Suggesting I get the medium coffee instead of the small, felt more like it was from a good place and not like they just wanted me to pay more. My daughter only eats her bagels plain with cream cheese and untoasted. This usually means she gets dry, hard bagels. Not here. It was so yummy and the croissant I ordered was buttery, flaky and yes, my daughter ate most of it... I want to stop by for lunch soon. Not only did the cashier not offer any type of apology or heads up for the insane wait time, she actually yelled at me as I was headed for the door because I "grabbed" the bag from the countertop. This place is cute (very small), has outdoor seating and always smells great. However, I don't understand why it has such high ratings. The coffee isn't that good. Let me be frank, I did not like their coffee and I once got a cafe au lait that was just as disappointing. While I was successful in securing many delicious baked goods for friends and family, I was also equally as successful in finding many delicious choices to stuff into my fat face. A few items that I suggest that you try while here but please do not limit yourself to these items, are: crazy oatmeal cookies, banana blast muffins, peanut butter doodle cookies, chocolate chip cookies, glazed gingerbread cookies with bacon(yes I did say bacon), pumpkin spice donuts and they're amazing fruit cake. I grew up in Ridgewood and this was one of my favorite places when I still lived there! The vibe of the cafe is so chill and artistic I love it! I used to eat their sandwiches and I was never disappointed by the quality and taste of their lovely ingredient compositions. Their drinks are also great and they have an ample selection of non-dairy milks. My favorite part of this cafe is probably the jewelry corner; it's really cute and you support a local artist. Couldn't move after devouring The Southerner. If you're a biscuit connoisseur like this little lady right here, than this place summons you to partake in some maje food coma consumption. I had awoken extra ravenous that morning so before I buried my face in the gravy-laden breakfast sandwich, I couldn't resist a creamy chai tea latte with some oat milk. Yah...oat milk. Not cheap-o, nanzie-panzie, little wimpy, skimpy regular milk. Trust me, you'll notice the difference. We ended with a banana strawberry bread, which didn't pale in comparison to the other two. One of the few things I miss about living in Ridgewood is Norma's. I know there's all these hipster spots popping up but Normas feels old school..with all the milk alternatives and vegan options haha. Both the food and pastries are delicious, literally can't go wrong. The coffee is also solid. My only complaint as someone who made weekend visits is the size. Please expand!!! Norma's is the sort of unpretentious café where the staff actually smile and serve lovely, understated coffee and food at reasonable prices. Lucky Ridgewood to have such a great café! I actually leave the increasingly overpriced confines of Bushwick to visit Norma's as it's so friendly there, although zombie-like laptop users often take up the fast free wifi and the few seats. Fortunately there's space outside too and it's on a pleasant corner in a bustling European-feeling part of Ridgewood. The coffee is always well-made, the daily specials often include food like tasty tuna melts and houmous sandwiches at great prices and there's always loads of cakes and pastries. We have an adorable neighborhood coffee shop now, and the best part is that it's just down the block. It's also becoming chock full of hipsters. Which means I'm terrified that my landlord will realize that people actually want to live in Ridgewood now and subsequently charge us more. Hipsters or not, they serve a mean coffee, a pretty mean spread of made-in-house baked goods/sandwiches, and a less mean but still delicious cup of tea. Awwww. Yay Norma's! This place is adorable. I don't know that I'd say it's the BEST coffee or espresso I've ever had, BUT, I have unreasonable expectations. With that, it's easily the best place in the area and the atmosphere is really nice and warms my insides (hah, that's some kind of a coffe joke, probably). But it also goes without saying that their baked good are absolutely fantastic; really mind-blowingly delicious stuff. I'm happy they're nearby and it's my favorite way to wake up on the weekends. I'm prefacing the review with saying that I love Norma's, they were a breath of fresh air in the neighborhood. I support female businesses and am a customer since inception. A staple in the neighborhood, Norma's seems to have taken a culinary step backwards... as far as sandwiches concerned at least. Last couple of times the sandwiches were mehh, today a big disappointment. An overly toasted/ veeeery dry whole wheat challah,( tasted like dried out bread) and very boring fillers( the sandwich is called The Best).The spinach layer used to be lush and satisfying, today just barely there, egg was bland, tomato tasteless. Usually don't mind the long wait, but when receiving a very dry, boring sandwich for $8...? The pastries, teas, coffees are good, but the menu I believe needs rejuvenating, especially with all the competition around there. read more

Sometimes I used to wish that Ridgewood had a Starbuck's, but now I'm a million times happier that we got Norma's instead!! It is exactly what we've needed for a long time. The quality of the coffee is top-notch, and the owners will work with you if you want your cup tweaked a particular way. They also carry almond milk and soy milk. The baked goods are made on the premises, so they're extra fresh. You can often find the owners working behind the counter on the next batch of something totally delicious. They don't carry anything vegan yet, but I heard them say that they will try to in the future. They also don't carry bagels, but the savory muffins more than make up for it. I tried the ham-cheddar savory muffin, and it hit the spot for breakfast. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Even if you sit inside, you won't feel boxed in since there are big windows and the place is located on a corner. The owners told me that they are going to be getting their furniture and chairs soon, so there will be more seating inside. They also have free WiFi. The main thing that makes this a great place is that the owners are super friendly, and they care about their customer's happiness. read more

Wow! It was my first time coming to Norma's and I absolutely fell in love with the place as soon as I walked in. It literally feels like you're walking into your grandmother's kitchen as she is baking cookies and muffins. It didn't hurt that a little baby was practicing on her little itty bitty legs to walk. So cute. Soooooo I got a cinnamon raisin bagel. Wow! It was a bit small but it was very tasty!!! So fresh and flavorful unlike some. I also got the Bangkok hot tea. Delicious! The woman who helped me, who by the way is very knowledgeable with that menu and very friendly and insightful, told me it has a coconutty vanilla taste. Definitely right on point. I put some soy milk in mine which I believe complimented the flavors greatly. I also got two cranberry cinnamon muffins which I haven't tried yet because I'm waiting for my boyfriend to come home so we can try them together but I don't think I'll be disappointed. I put in a pick up order and walked for over 25 minutes in this horrific heat to pick it up only to find the shop was closed. (I had arrived approximately before 1 pm.) There was no note written or posted by the business nor did they reach out to me to save me the trouble. (I had put my phone number in for the order and even got a confirmation text that my order was being prepared). I walked into the Burek Pizza shop next door and the wonderful Aida had informed me that apparently they shut down early because their register system had crashed. That's all understandable but to leave me hanging without bothering to call me to save me the trouble of venturing out in the heat or to even write a note and post it on the door is just lazy. I still have not received my refund (which should have been handled before closing up shop and enjoying your day off). Ive attempted to call and leave a voicemail at least so that I can get the ball rolling on a refund but of course they do not have one set up. After writing an honest assessment Norma's coffee nearly a year ago, I'm delighted to say that they've really stepped up to the plate with their coffee. It's rare that a business pays attention to their customers' feedback and strives for improvement. Hey, it's really hard to start a business and be firing on all eight cylinders from the get-go. I had their coffee recently and it was awesome. That's what it's really about. Good coffee means repeat customers. They've nailed it as far as I'm concerned! Really great breakfast sandwiches, had the light and lovely very filling and "healthier", my boyfriend had the New Yorker with spicy bacon, which was delicious. BUT the service was horrible both girls were very rude!! The soy latte that I had was HORRIBLE, milk steamed terribly and small cup filled half way. On the other hand my boyfriends iced coffee was nice and smooth.
