I want to like Rockaway Roasters more but every time I go the vibes are a little off. Starting with the good--the drinks are great, especially the nitro cold brew. The location is fantastic, a 5 minute walk the beach. The inside is nice and has ample seating with Wi-Fi and outlets. The bad--each time I have gone, there's always something going on with the staff. There is one regular worker in particular who I've witnessed: - Turn away customers who want a smoothie or juice because "the blender is already cleaned", a full hour or two before closing - Complain loudly about people coming from the beach and bringing sand inside (as my group is walking in from the beach) - Go on a prejudiced rant about LGBT+ people, loud enough for the entire cafe to hear - Go around and tell customers that the cafe is closing soon, an hour before closing. One time she mentioned it several times to me until I felt pressured to leave at 2:30pm, and she closed the cafe as I left (they are supposed to be open until 3pm) I'll continue going to Rockaway Roasters anytime I'm at the beach and craving their nitro cold brew, but probably only to-go. And not too close to closing time. read more

This place was stellar; this is the 4th coffee shop I've been to within my 3 weeks of living in Rockaway, and this one is the best. I got a really good Iced latte with Pistachio flavor. They had a great selection of pastries, including some great savory quiches. Rockaway roasters is a must stop if you find yourself in far rockaway. The menu has plenty of good eats, some highlights being the açaí bowls which are incredibly fresh and the perfect blend between frozen and not too hard, and the pastries such as their croissants. The drinks are delicious as well with the iced chai being my preference. It's never too sweet and doesn't taste burnt as some often do. I ordered a dirty chai, which was amazing. Probably the best I've had. Service was also good. I also ordered a goat cheese quiche and unfortunately it was inedible. I've visited this place a few times this summer, having no clue that there are at least a half dozen better cafes to choose from in that 5 block radius, and i've never had a good experience. I've had a barista roll her eyes at me because I ordered something off the lunch menu, the actual food items might as well be microwaved, the coffee is always a toss up between "burnt" and "okay," and the tables they setup outside might as well not belong to them, seeing as how they don't take care of them. I once had a cashier pack her things and finish her shift on me, immediately after taking my order, and 10 minutes later, the girl who replaced her confronted me with the question "what are you still doing here?" ... not "what order are you waiting for?"I did stick around for my order, but that was really the last straw. read more

The ambiance is great, the coffee is good, but the customer servis terrible. I was "greeted" with a what do you want kind of attitude from a young lady with a carribean accent. I asked for 3 shots of espresso over ice. I believe she was training someone on the new register and said something about the espresso. I wasn't clear on whether she was speaking to me or her co-worker so I asked the barista if this was still an item I can purchase. No response. Ok, I ask for a flavored pumpkin syrup and the barista quickly reply's "we don't have any pumpkin syrup,we have everything else" so as I scan the option behind her I see pumpkin syrup. So I ask hey is that pumpkin syrup empty, she says what pumpkin syrup? Finally turns around to see that they do indeed have the item. I also asked if there was an extra charge for the syrup. No response. I was given a price and then she walked away. The woman the barista was training later explained and apologized for the inconvenience, I told it's cool and I understand. I'm not sure if this barista was having a bad day,but this isn't the first time I've experienced terrible customer service here. I tried to support my local businesses because I love my neighborhood, but I assure you this is the last time I will purchase anything from this shop. This is a really cool place for breakfast. It has a couch seating in one corner and tables all across the place. I visited with my friends and we order shakshuka, avocado toast and grilled cheese. While the avocado toast was delicious, it was not filling. The grilled cheese was very soft and melted in your mouth and I loved it. The shakshuka was a new thing that I tried and I loved it too. Yuck. I will never go back. When I was super excited from the outside because it looks really hip and I saw lots of great reviews but when I walked in the place was dirty, dingy looking, and the staff didn't seem very welcoming. After perusing the menu for a moment, I ordered one of their frappes when the cashier couldn't figure out how to ring it up, she tried stating that they didn't make that type. I looked over my shoulder back at the menu and told her it was right there and repeated my choice. Another employee walked over to the cashier from the front of the counter and helped the person rignnit up. I also ordered an almond croissant. I noticed fruit flies around so that should have been the first indication to me that I should turn around and walk out lolol. About 5 minutes later, I was given my drink and croissant and off I went. As I got into my car I tried the drink. It was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The croissant was hard as a rock! It definitely wasn't fresh! Pretty expensive for a neighborhood coffee shop. The staff that they had that day also could use some training in customer service.. if you act like you don't want to be there, don't work there. I don't need to deal with staff that are moody. I'll just go somewhere else to get my coffee.. somewhere where you don't feel like your putting the workers out by asking them to do their job. Avocado toast ( bread was cold) w/feta and an egg, which I paid extra for (the egg was ice cold and rubbery) delivered in a plastic container w/no intent to be kept warm. When the food arrived, I thought the dish was meant to be served cold. No visible red onions and no special sauce. My ice coffee should have been sealed with plastic wrap.
