We asked for one of 1 Tom Plumber's technicians to take a look at our water heater, which was only giving us a few minutes of hot water before it turned cold. The plumber gave us a four-hour window for the appointment then came out and took a look at it. He told us that he didn't know how old the water heater was because it wasn't listed on the tank, so he couldn't be sure if it was an age thing. He said it might be the thermostat, but he couldn't be certain, and said that it would be $400 for him to replace. If that wasn't what turned out to be the problem, they could install a new water heater and that would be $10K. Thank god I told them that I would look around for quotes and for them to leave it for now. We called a local plumber. He gave us an exact time he would be there, and showed up promptly. He said that it's easy to find out the age of a water heater because most companies have a website you can input the serial number and it'll tell you how old the model is (which feels like something that the 1 Tom Plumber guy should have known). He also immediately said that the HEATING ELEMENT was the likely issue, not the age of the water heater or the thermostat. Total cost was about $200 for him to fix our problem (which seems fair for labor and customer service), and he was there for an hour and a half total to look at the heater and a few other leaks in our house (which he also diagnosed and fixed). He told us that he'd had bad experiences with 1 Tom Plumber himself and that they were known to grossly overcharge. 1 Tom Plumber looks like an easy choice if you don't have any experience with plumbers, but don't fall for their simple "a la carte" menu-style of pricing. They'll grossly overcharge you, and they likely won't have nearly as much experience as a smaller business or local plumber.

Absolutely terrible customer service! I originally contacted them in April to have a propane…read morefireplace inspected as I couldn't get it to light. Then, we discovered that the propane wasn't being filled by them so that is why it wouldn't light. After about 2 months of calling them asking for the propane to be filled, they finally sent someone out and filled it. Next, they claimed they couldn't inspect the fireplace without a pressure test of the line. Another 2 months of them no-showing for multiple appointments, they finally came in October and completed the pressure testing and inspection of the fireplace. Afterwards, I was told I needed a part which would be in the next week. After five weeks of not hearing anything, I called them. They told me that they have no record of ever coming out to my house and that they would have to come and do the same thing again. Then, when I told them that they had already been to my house for the service appointment, they told me that they have no record of me being a customer. They then wanted to charge me another insane amount to come out again. I'm finally just done and going to call somewhere else. Apparently these people don't want the business.
